Fringe - Season 4 - Latest from TV Line - 11th November 2011

If you think that Fox’s Fringe (Fridays at 9/8c) is cribbing from Lost‘s sideways world — that Peter just needs to make Walter, Olivia et al remember him and all will be hunky-dory — think again. As Joshua Jackson affirms in this TVLine Q&A, “Peter is in the wrong place, and he knows it.”

But will Peter ever be able to convince a thoroughly spooked Walter into helping him remedy this worlds-clashed problem of his? Jackson shares much insight on that, as well as teases other Fringe mysteries to come.

TVLINE | Can you start off by assuring your fans that now that you’re back, you will more than make up for missed airtime minutes?
[Laughs] I will be “Where’s Waldo?” in this show from now on. In every frame, I’ll be somewhere. No, that’s a lie but I will be a part of the show from now on. I promise.

TVLINE | In fact, Peter’s a major player now, as a critical resource for this Fringe team.
He’s definitely a resource and in ways that the Fringe team, as constituted now, doesn’t really understand, because he has knowledge of a lot of the cases they’re dealing with. But he is very much the outsider, and the dynamics of the relationships as they existed before are completely nonexistent. In fact, the person who is the most accepting of Peter coming back is the person who knows him the least – Lincoln Lee (played by Seth Gabel). They both essentially become outsiders to this team. Olivia wants nothing to with him, Walter is terrified of him…. It’s a different world.

  1. Thanks for this. I really love the way that the writers have incorporated the Peter that we all know and love in to the "sideways world of the Olivia and Walter that we don't know, yet" it still allows for forward movement of the characters and stories from what was told before and I can't wait to see how it unfolds.

  2. "And there’s some debate about that – is home here and these people just need to be reminded? Or is home some place else?" This is probably what has me floundering and unable to figure out how to regard this show or its characters right now. We still don't know the nature of who they are. Should we just consider them alternates, since we've learnt that a person is very much a sum of their experiences? If you take it that way, it sort of precludes you rooting for Peter to bond with these 'new' people, because it wouldn't be them...and we'd have Peter and Fauxlivia the sequel. Come to think of it, and this is hilarious, if Peter is wrong and this is his Walter and Olivia in whatever essence you want to take it, that will be the second time he wouldn't have recognized Olivia, in addition to now fudging it with his dad.
But again, what's the point of a season of plot and emotional development if the iterations of Walter, Olivia, and company we love are no longer existent, or Peter gets restored to his timeline? It's really odd. My gut tells me the resolution will make both realities valid - the new timeline and aspects and memories of the old one, but it's still one very large and frustrating puzzle.

  3. “Peter is in the wrong place, and he knows it.” It seems like he really will start to consider that this is an other universe... He should just try to contact September; not that it's easy but I think Peter will know that an observer is the only one who can give answers to his questions.

  5. I posted this somewhere else, so I'm just going to paste it: I’ve taken for granted that everyone would eventually “remember” Peter,
but what JJ says here made me think that maybe these new characters will
just accept him and his assistance but nothing else. So maybe we will
actually go back to the original timeline. Maybe this season will
culminate with Peter actually returning. The press release for episode
    4×08 makes more sense now… I didn’t
know (and still don’t…) if going back to the original timeline and to
our original characters was something we could expect, or if this
timeline was where the story would unravel from now on and these
characters where here to stay. Now I have hope that we might see them
    again…

  6. Wow a lot of great comments.  I am just glad Peter is back.  What will be, will be.  I am always surprised and excited when this show is on.

  7. I'd love it if there was a reliable way for Peter to contact September but, most likely, if those two meet again it will be September who seeks out Peter.

  9. Geez.  Peter is doomed to be forever surrounded by people who look like Olivia but aren't.
