    Sometimes when fitting into a new world there is a need to knock off the rough edges to be comfortable. I've been in a semi-similar situation, and commenting is not necessarily a criticism - some people aren't aware of the habits they have, highlighting them allows the other person to explain or choose to change.

    That's true but, coming from someone like Brennan whose comments often seem like criticism anyway, it can be overly grating.  That makes things worse rather than better and defeats the purpose of the exercise.
