True Blood - Season 5 - Casting News - 17th October 2011

As the producers promised, True Blood is introducing several new characters in season 5 — and EW got the early word on two of the roles.

Creator Alan Ball and his team of scribes have put out a casting call for someone to play Nora, a beautiful and intelligent 25-to-35 something who plays a double agent within the Vampire Authority. What’s even better than that? She’s got a big history with Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) because she’s a progeny of Godric. Nora will be a series regular role that may (or may not) involve a little nudity. (It IS True Blood, after all).

Meanwhile, Co-Executive Producer Raelle Tucker told EW that they’ll include a “very significant, strong, mysterious woman at the center of one of our main stories next year … a very familiar and compelling character. It may be someone you’ve heard of before.” Especially if you’ve read the Bible: The True Blood team also put out the call for someone to play Salome, as in THE Salome, daughter of Herodias, from the good book. She’s a powerful ancient vampire (hmm, don’t remember that part from the New Testament) and a world-class seductress who’s also a little mad. So she’ll fit right into Bon Temps.

Any suggestions for Ball and his team?

  2. True Blood sure does love its duplicitous and crazy women characters.  There's always a few new ones every season.

  4. Intersting casting info.  Excited to be getting even a little bit of info about the next season of True Blood this early, and this counts as more than a little bit.

Intrigued by the double agent status of Nora, as who is she a double agent for... what/who is bigger than The Authority? Plus I like that if she's a sister vamp to Eric that means plenty of chances for flash-backs with Godric.

  5. Hmmm, still need to finish the last season. I stopped watching after 5 or 6 episodes... But unless a couple of the current characters were killed off, the show doesn't need a lot of new blood.

  6. I think new blood is fine, keeps things fresh and interesting, BUT only if they allow other characters to be killed off or just not be a part of the story of the season.  True Blood has been very bad about letting enough characters go at the end of each season before introducing new ones. The end of season 4 is an example of this (I won't be specific as you haven't seen it) but although it looks as if a bold step has been taken in trimming down the cast, it turns out that it is not the case. I would rather not see characters every week than end up watching a show where they cram in short segments of essentially irrelevant and uninteresting scenes just to make sure that each memeber of the cast gets a bit of screen time every week.  When that starts happening, then it is time to trim both plots and characters.

  7. I have a suggestion for Ball and his team....

Either use the books as material and get rid of many new characters after the end of every season, or screw the books and make the series about the large (too large) cast grown over the first 3 seasons.

IT would be a much smoother and tighter plot if they cut back the core group that transitions from season to season by about half. Then add in the new characters that are needed for the seasonal plots each year. After that plot is done, if those characters have no future dealings with the core cast - lose them! They do not need to make every second or third (or fourth) tier character have a plot of their own.
