They are the 18-49 Demographic Ratings from the initial nights viewing and then the +7 days viewing numbers . eg people who watched it on DVR within 7 days.
Arguably they aren't important in most cases, but in cases like FRINGE, last year most people are certain that their high percentage changes in +7 ratings was what got FRINGE renewed.
Wow: Fringe gets a HUGE 0.8 boost to 2.3 :D SPN goes back up to s6 numbers: 1.3 shows like Modern Family explode from 6.2 to 8.6? That's absolutely incredible.
The problem with the +7/DVR numbers is that most people use DVR to skip the adverts.
In theory a show could have 100 Million viewers but if no watched an advert the show would be cancelled.
It's all about the ads on Broadcast TV. The ad payments pay for the shows to air. That is why Live Viewing numbers are still the most important and why things such as DVR and Downloads simply don't matter to the execs as they drive no revenue.
Ok, I understand that perfectly, it's the commercials that bring in the money.
What would happen if we all got so fed up with the ads. that we started to record everthing and hardly anyone watched live. Would that be the end of TV as we know it?
Would it not be more inelligent to run a thin comtinuous ribbon with all the ads at the bottom of the various shows, like a ticker-tape, so even the DVR viewers would be forced to watch them.
No, I think that either through a Press Release or the Masked Scheduler, they mentioned repeatedly throughout the season that the +7 ratings were rather exceptional, and while that might've mainly been spin at the time, it was posted by FOX that they certainly came into play when deciding whether or not to renew it.
That's the problem the networks are trying (and so far failing) to resolve. They have still not managed to work out an alternative method to successfully pay for shows that are not watched live.
We have to remember what the networks normally have as far as viewers. The most improved was Supernatural and that is good. We need to keep watching, and get the word out on good it is this year. I have gotten new people at work watching and they love it. We don't give up. The show is good.
I'm not sure what impact, if any, this really has on show renewal, etc, but it still makes me very happy to see Supernatural (and Fringe, but that's a secondary love) gain so much.
Most networks don't think much about Live+7 numbers. For them, Live+SD and C3 are important. When they post about their Live+7 ratings, it's usually a PR spin.
That said, I think that the CW is the only network that really pays attention to these numbers because they live from selling their shows abroad, them all being an in-house production, and these numbers generally indicate the popularity of a show. AFAIK, Supernatural is, at the moment, the CW's best selling on-air commodity and it's already bringing in money from syndication.
All that was summed up in that article about the hows and whys of the CW's continued survival - to which I, of course, lost the link...
Having ads constantly appear WHILE I'm in the middle of the program would be despicable. I'd rather watch the commercials than have them crowd in on my program.
I would disagree, for I think FOX (while they primarily focus on L+SD and C3 as you said) also pay attention to L+7, at least when it comes to shows like Fringe. They made sure to add that L+7 day spin to every single one of their Press releases and I believe insisted that it was a deciding factor in keeping the show last season,
Well, it's nice to see Supernatural top the ratings in something. Great news! Perhaps the CW will see this and consider changing to a night besides Friday. Of course, it is pretty likely to be renewed if it stays on Friday so perhaps it should stay there.
These do not influence the numbers that go to advertisers so for all intents and purposes, no they are not important. They look great in press releases though and may cause scheduling changes.
More likely, people would have to pay for every show that they watched like a pay-per-view thing. To be honest, if I were able to shows I wanted when I wanted without commercials and still support the show so it continued to air, I would be more than willing to subscribe to Supernatural.
Considering we're in the top 4 of the channel and is on friday, it's pretty good, we can stay there...and anyway sending any others shows than SPN on friday will kill them, all their shows (except for the vampires and Secret circle) are already doing bad on good days, can't imagine moving them on friday
Actually this week 4 shows did better on the CW in demo than Supernatural: Vampire Diaries, Secret Circle, America's Next Top Model, and Hart of Dixie. Supernatural tied in demo with 90210 and Gossip Girl. Only two shows did worse than Supernatural in demo: Ringer and Nikkita. This of course does not include the already cancelled H8R. You can look at this as Supernatural is the fifth best rated show on the CW, but it can also be interpreted as Supernatural being third to last in ratings. I don't think Supernatural is in danger of being cancelled but there is no mistaking that this is not good.
I'm with you on that-no idea what those numbers mean Can someone please tell me if Fringe is doing well(or at least staying the same) because I DO NOT want to see my favourite show being cancelled!!!
I have, on occasion seen a network use the +7 numbers in their press releases for some shows so they do recognize it.
Also, aren't the DVR ratings considered more accurate? The Nielsen ratings are based on a statistical algorithm, right?
(A friend of mine got turned down for being a Nielsen household because she watched a lot of first run syndication (Hercules, Xena, et al) she said they told her she'd throw the curve.)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Yay for SPN!
ReplyDeleteDidn't see that coming... but woohoo!! \o/
ReplyDeleteThat's for 4.01, correct?
ReplyDeleteWoo hoo!!!!! Thats our boys! Go SPN!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWoo Hoo! Go Fringe! Sorry SPN, you take back burner for me...
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see that ;)
ReplyDeleteI am more interested in the numbers for One Night In October. If it wil be around this that will be some increase.
ReplyDeleteCan anyone please explain to me what these numbers mean?
ReplyDeleteThey are the 18-49 Demographic Ratings from the initial nights viewing and then the +7 days viewing numbers . eg people who watched it on DVR within 7 days.
ReplyDeleteThis probably sounds a bit silly but so what are the final ratings for Supernatural? I'm still trying to get the hang of these things ^^
ReplyDeleteWonderful news to start the week off with!
ReplyDeleteBut do these ulterior ratings have any real effect on the saving or cancelling of a show.
ReplyDeleteI mean are they really important?
They are certainly looked at more than they used to be due to the increase in people using DVR's etc
ReplyDeleteHow much is another question, that only the people at the networks who look at these things can answer.
Great for Fringe. And Supernatural numbers are quite impressive too.
ReplyDeleteSo nothing is actually known about how the networks interpret this data.
ReplyDeleteInteresting, I would have thought that there would be some sort of general indication of how it is considered by them.
Arguably they aren't important in most cases, but in cases like FRINGE, last year most people are certain that their high percentage changes in +7 ratings was what got FRINGE renewed.
ReplyDeleteNothing official that I've ever come across I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteyay supernatural best show ever
ReplyDeleteWow:
ReplyDeleteFringe gets a HUGE 0.8 boost to 2.3 :D
SPN goes back up to s6 numbers: 1.3
shows like Modern Family explode from 6.2 to 8.6? That's absolutely incredible.
But no official confirmation on that from the network, just hearsay among fans?
ReplyDeleteModern Family was mentioned twice..
ReplyDeletewtg Supernatural!

I think it's due to 2 episodes airing during the time period.
ReplyDeleteYay Supernatural! Although I don't know how the Live+7 % affects ratings an the possibility for a renewal. Can anyone explain?
ReplyDeleteYa I just read them. Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteOk, I understand that perfectly, it's the commercials that bring in the money.

ReplyDeleteMy pleasure :)
ReplyDeleteExactly. Which is why they also have the C3 ratings I believe. (Basically watched WITH commercials within 3 days of the live showing)
ReplyDeleteNot sure how they calculate that, but supposedly they are a better way of measuring viewers that matter to advertisers.
YES!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a devilish idea. I think that would make it worse. I would wait for the DVD in that case.
ReplyDeleteThat's okay. It's the opposite for me. lol SPN is the end all and be all on television for me.
ReplyDeleteThat's the problem the networks are trying (and so far failing) to resolve.
ReplyDeleteThey have still not managed to work out an alternative method to successfully pay for shows that are not watched live.
Could you resist a year without your favourite programes:-)

ReplyDeleteNot surprised but absolutelly delighted. :D
ReplyDeleteCongratulations for SPN! So happy for you;)
ReplyDeleteRatings News - Live+7 18-49 Table - 10th October - Supernatural gets
ReplyDeleteContinues to fear for Nikita!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what impact, if any, this really has on show renewal, etc, but it still makes me very happy to see Supernatural (and Fringe, but that's a secondary love) gain so much.
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff... Pleased for Fringe primarily, but great to see Up All Night, The Office & SPN doing well there too!
ReplyDelete:D that's awesome for SPN! Yeah!
ReplyDeleteIf anyone wants to know according to Zap2it that had SPN up from 2 million viewers to 2.9 million viewers (roughly).
ReplyDeleteMost networks don't think much about Live+7 numbers. For them, Live+SD and C3 are important. When they post about their Live+7 ratings, it's usually a PR spin.

don't know what any of it means but if its good for supernatural, i'm happy :D
ReplyDeleteHaving ads constantly appear WHILE I'm in the middle of the program would be despicable. I'd rather watch the commercials than have them crowd in on my program.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's another 1/3 of the total original audience. It would be REALLY impressive if the CW's ratings weren't so damn anemic.
ReplyDeleteI would disagree, for I think FOX (while they primarily focus on L+SD and C3 as you said) also pay attention to L+7, at least when it comes to shows like Fringe. ReplyDeleteFriday's ratings finalized at 1.72 million live plus same day DVR with a 0.7 in demo (18-49).

So happy for Supernatural!!!!!!!! The show deserves it!
ReplyDeletePleased to see Fringe picked up a load more viewers :)
ReplyDeleteGO! SPN GO!
ReplyDeletego ahead and call it come back /spn fan/
