The final season of NBC’s Chuck and new drama Grimm had to premiere up against Game 7 of the World Series on Friday night. Here’s how they did:

– Chuck‘s fifth season returned to 3.4 million viewers and a 1.0 in the adults 18-49 rating, down to an all-time low.

– Grimm, however, opened quite well, all things considered. The supernatural drama delivered 6.5 million viewers and a 2.1 in the demo. That’s building 110 percent upon its lead in. Grimm ranked as Friday’s highest-rated non-sports show. The drama also built slightly from 8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

NBC was aided by CBS going into repeats to avoid the smash-up. So did Fox (while releasing this video to appease Fringe fans).

Given the situation, both performances deserve to be graded on a big curve (ball). And the issue isn’t “did NBC do poorly in the ratings” anyway, but whether these shows are going to be able to perform well in the weeks to come if viewers miss these launch episodes since they were watching the Big Game. As the new kid on the block, Grimm in particular has a lot on the line (Chuck fans, one suspects, will find the show). For once, DVR is the network’s friend

  1. Well, it's sad about Chuck's ratings, but the show's done anyway. Ratings really don't matter anymore.

    How did SPN do?

  2. Huh, that's about what I expected for Chuck. Grimm's ratings are pretty good, however. And it seems viewers stayed all throughout the hour (from the earlier ratings). Good for it!

  3. Seems SPN and Nikita held steady despite the World Series. I was expecting a dip. Fringe getting bumped probably helped. If it was on I would have watched Fringe instead. I don't watch baseball unless it's the Red Sox.

  4. Anyone elsethinking Grimm is just a lame Supernatural rip off?

  5. Maybe the same people who think Supernatural is just a lame X-Files rip off.

  6. Supernatural is created/ran/produced by many of the same people who did X-Files.

  7. So you think that the people of the X-Files are ripping themselves off?
Hilarious since it's from several key writers/producers of the X-Files.

  8. don't see why you're having the sad smiley^^; Spn is steady at 0,7, right there with the others CW shows since the beginning of the season, while being on friday. No reason to cry here

  9. Glad to see that supernatural held on to it's 0.7.
I would love if it got 7.0!  Well a girl can dream can't she!
No, I'm glad it kept stable:-)

I'm not really surprised by Grimm. It's a pilot, after all and people are usually curious to see a new show.
The proof of the pudding will be seen over the next couple of weeks.

  10. For once the ratings for Chuck don't really matter, final season and put on the 'death slot' of a Friday. Its almost a relief not to have to worry about whether it will be cancelled or not and instead I'm just enjoying the final 13 episodes.

  11. Would you rather yet another CSI ripoff instead?

  12. I think CW should reshow Nikita and Supernatural. World Series game took a lot of viewers away

  13. That would be like saying Supernatural was a lame Buffy rip off.

If anything it is far more close to being Buffy rip-off, but honestly I think it had its own mythos, albeit similar to Buffy.: A chosen one to fight the monsters that most people do not know are there hiding in plain sight. Actually, basing it on fairy tales and just all things that go bump in the night feels different to me than both Buffy and SPN and it's so different in tone to Once Upon a Time.

For me personally, both Buffy and Supernatural improved greatly AFTER the pilots. Grimm needs to too if it gets the chance.

  14. Yeah it's nice to not worry about Chuck weekly..... and I was pleasantly surprised by Grimm and now by its ratings too.

  15. Canada runs Grimm at 8pm. Some of the early feedback may have spurred interest south of the border, before it even aired in the US.

  16. Grimm make great ratings, but Chuck fail

  17. Am I the only one to notice there isn't a rating for baseball? Not that I want to know its just curiosity... I loved GRIMM... Might be the fact that its shot entirely in Portland... I'm a sucker for my home city...

  18. We'll have those numbers very shortly. We'll update the table when we do.

  19. Yep, we didn't have the numbers when we posted

  20. I was hoping to not like Grimm, but sad to say, loved it.  But since my DVR only records 2 shows, it will stay with SPN and Fringe.  Did not care for Once Upon a Time at all, and from the comments I am the only person that did not like it.  It was just to jumbled with to many fairy tales in one ep, won't be back for seconds.

Buffy improved greatly once James Marsters showed up and Spike was the only reason I continued to watch.  I felt that SPN started off like they had been doing the series for years, they knew their characters from the start and I fell hard. lol  And am still in love with the show, but wish they had not gotten rid of Misha, I loved all his characters and miss him.  Glad Mark Sheppard is still with us.

  21. I wish NBC would move Grimm to an earlier or later slot, very poor planning to put it against SPN & Fringe.  Let's face it there are only so many people that are into supernatural/scifi stuff and to put it up against 2 of the same thing is just one of the reasons NBC is usually in last place. I really loved Grimm and am sad that I will not be able to watch it.  Another reason I like cable shows, they come on several times so can always catch up. lol

  22. Yes, it is a relief not having to worry about Chuck's ratings. I was expecitng a 1.3 for Chuck though and thought that it would fall to a 1.0 AFTER the second episode. Well, it IS the last season so no big deal.

  23. I dont get why they put Grimm on friday.
    ps: kinda love the show

  24. 8 fringe 9 spn 10 grimm I WOULD DIE! :D

  25. I can DVR 2 shows at the same time, so SPN & Fringe will stay, but dang both Fox and CW have news at 9 central, so Grimm could be moved there.  Only 2 shows I watch on NBC is Chuck & Community, but would love to have Grimm to add to that list.  Very poor planning for NBC.

  26. haha I got a tv in my room so i record two show on the one of my parents and watch live spn, but still 1 each hour would be awesome, i really liked grimm

  27. Over here, Supernatural airs two nights a week and so does Grimm. Fringe used to, 2 years ago, when it was on a the big national network.

    ReplyDelete
  28. ! What thats awesome! I'm moving there ahha

    ReplyDelete
  29. Seriously?  Grimm?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Did you watch it?  I would watch every week if it was on a different time, not giving up SPN or Fringe.
