Thanks! I find it interesting that Fringe despite being a repeat kept up with Supernatural (ie- Supernatural didn't get that many viewers/ratings) but this is only the overnights. We'll see in the DVR + 7 how it really is I suppose....
Although since Supernatural was a new episode and Fringe was a repeat you would expect Supernatural to have more viewers than it did.
No, this is just what I expected. Supernatural is on the CW which has far fewer affiliates than Fox, so I don't expect it to ever beat or equal a new ep of Fringe in ratings. But being able to win against a repeat of the show that is broadcast in millions of more homes because of the reach of the network is a good thing for the CW.
Very true but even so-- it is down from last year's 6x05 if I'm not mistaken. It is really sad to see that Supernatural is doing 1+ million viewers with new episodes. :( it is sad.
Well like SuePo mentioned in the post above yours, the CW has got fewer affiliates than Fox so it is not really surprising that Supernatural didn't pull huge ratings over Fringe despite being the latter being a repeat.
What is sad for me is the fact that Supernatural has gone down in the ratings to what it had two years ago even. But that is probably because it is on Fridays.
SPN isnt doing great in DVR episode 1 was up from a 0.8 to a 1.2 and episode 2 was only up from 0.7 to a 1.1. Yes the increase is pretty big but thats still pretty low. In that second week VD was up to a 1.8, SC a 1.4, Ringer 1.3, 90210 a 1.2. Only GG and Nikita are doing worse live and in DVR.
I definately think ratings while important have less impact on whether a show survives on the CW or not. Its not a typical business model. Personally I think that they now don't value the live/same day american viewer as much as they used to, its become more about overseas sales, DVD and lucrative syndication deals.
There are also a large number who watch streaming on their computers so they can chat with each other and share their love of the show. Many of those overseas also do this. In some markets, the show doesn't appear until Saturday. There are a lot of reasons. I, too, will wait the 7 day and see what happens. I would dearly love to see them find a way to count all of us.
Well, considering the number of affiliates the CW has, it could be worse. It's a Friday night. Many DVR/Tivo it. Let's wait and see. They need to find a way to count the other ways of watching it. Many of my friends live stream it.
Of course VD, SC and Ringer got bigger numbers with DVR, they started with an 1.4 or something. We were #1 on the percentage increase, that's what matters.
^^; and tvmonkey looked like he/she thought I was stupid already, when I made a joke (pretty ovious one) and tvmonkey acted like I was too stupid to joke and I was 3000% serious that food is the biggest trouble it ever happened in history.
I remember that, sadly I'm seeing that on almost every website, a lot of people who are know on the website picking up on newbies knowning no ones will say anything :(
Not at all. Fox is much bigger than the CW all around. In fact, I was glad that Supernatural beat so many repeats. Let's face it. Many times other network's repeats beat new CW episodes. That's the disadvantage of being on a netlet. Heck, basic cable regularly beats the CW now.
Last year had a few 1+ million viewer episodes too, but yes, I is a shame that this is now the norm instead of the exception. All shows decline in ratings as they age. I was hoping that Supernatural wouldn't decline so sharply though. If we keep demos in the 0.8 range we should be okay. Anything lower gets into anxiety range. Spring will be the real test.
Live streaming does nothing for the CW or Warner Brothers. The only thing it can do is hurt Warner Brothers overseas deals so actually high live streaming numbers is detrimental to a show. Unfortunately while live +7 numbers make for good press points, they don't keep a show on the air.
Fringe has absolutely no correlation on Supernatural's ratings and vice versa. The ratings last year proved that. It seems people with Nielsen boxes watch one or the other but not both - at least not in large numbers.
Yes, Spring will be the real test for sure. I'm just sadden to see that it is the norm for Supernatural to get 1+ mil now when it used to be a shock to get before 2 mil. Oh how times have changed huh?
I hope that the demos will stay steady or higher too
It doesnt matter how big you start its how many viewers of the correct demo you can hold on to.
Its % increase means jack shit actually 100% increase on a rating of 0.1 is still only 0.2. Would we be bigging up that result if a show had gotten it? After all that would have put said show at the top of the percentage chart? SPN got a 60% increase on a very low number and 60% of low is still 60% of low. DVR ratings dont make networks money therefore mean nothing despite what many viewers think and network spin tries to imply. Do not be fooled.
It all comes down to the bottom line. The CW is in no way a profitable venture for either Warner Bros. or CBS. The networks ad revenue is barely enough to keep it afloat. But, what shows like SPN that broadcast on the CW do do for WB, (I said do-do :) is make them $$ in syndication, DVD and overseas distribution. I believe you're correct that ratings aren't as important to the parent companies, the ratings only serve to help the network itself decide what to renew and cancel. So in essence, the only other shows the CW shows are competing with are the others on the CW.
But, keep in mind, it is a network-wide phenomenon. VD got over 3 million last year and averages 2.5 now and is the only show getting those numbers -- and that's without competition from American Idol. Both of the new CW shows are getting .9-.8 and less than 2 mill. So even tho SPN is down from last year, it is still ranking up high in the CW's line-up. When it can do that and you factor in it's on a Friday where there is typically more leniency, it's not as bad as it seems.
I think your right, but people don't like it when i've given the same opinion in the past. For example GG is alway NO 1 on iTunes in the UK And US Week after week which obviously generates some sort of sales. Then you have to look at the stars of the show, while GG might have low ratings they are now big stars who are starting to appear in big budget movies which generates HUGE media attention which again helps the show in other means.
Then finally GG is aired all over the world and its coverage online has alway mean Huge if not the one of the biggest (Check Facebook) but other shows including Hart Of Dixie have not even been bought up here to air in the UK.
So I could not agree with you more, a network like the CW will look at every area of a show before renewal/cancellation.
Anyway i reckon 1 MORE 12 EP SEASON to finish on their contracts. :-)
I completely agree. DVR numbers have absolutely no relevance for CW shows because they have such low ratings. What I believe matters is how high you're on the list, and we were #1.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteEven with a repeat Fringe is hanging in there!!
ReplyDeleteSecond most watched (overall viewers) episode of Supernatural for the season.
ReplyDeleteReally a .5 for Fringe? That's the worst I've seen it at... But once they factor in the DVR numbers shouldn't be that bad...
ReplyDeleteIt was a repeat.
ReplyDeleteSame here. Wasn't this supposed to be a big episode with Buffy people too? I thought they would have at least risen to a .8 without Fringe being new.
ReplyDeleteI'm a bit sad about still 0,7 when many shows got 0,8 this week :'(, but with hope we'll get our 0,8 with the final rating on monday :)
ReplyDeleteVery true but even so-- it is down from last year's 6x05 if I'm not mistaken. It is really sad to see that Supernatural is doing 1+ million viewers with new episodes. :( it is sad.

possible, last week SPN ticked up in the Finals (0.8) and Nikita down (0.5)

ReplyDeleteI know that...I'm not stupid, that's why I'm hoping it will happen again this week since it was the week where half of the shows got that score
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information about the DVR. I'm not surprised that Supernatural isn't doing great. I know a lot of fans who were discouraged by S6
ReplyDeleteThere are also a large number who watch streaming on their computers so they can chat with each other and share their love of the show. Many of those overseas also do this. ReplyDeleteWow ease of the offended pedal a little will ya, no one called you stupid but you. In fact it looks like TVMonkey was agreeing with you.
ReplyDeletexD Its not a big national top secret the final ratings, its easy to find, people need to be stupid if they can't find that
ReplyDelete^^; and tvmonkey looked like he/she thought I was stupid already, when I made a joke (pretty ovious one) and tvmonkey acted like I was too stupid to joke and I was 3000% serious that food is the biggest trouble it ever happened in history.

Interested to know the analysis of the fringe repeat.
ReplyDeleteNot at all. Fox is much bigger than the CW all around. In fact, I was glad that Supernatural beat so many repeats. Let's face it. Many times other network's repeats beat new CW episodes. That's the disadvantage of being on a netlet. Heck, basic cable regularly beats the CW now.
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping that Supernatural raises to 0.8 in demo again like they did last week.

ReplyDeleteShow almost beat Dateline. Way more old, paranoid TV watchers than Supernatural fans.
ReplyDeleteCSI: NY has gone slightly up, love that fact! Hope it gets the renewal! And Blue Bloods also looks good!!!
ReplyDeleteYou're right but I thought that maybe against a repeat, there would be a chance of getting higher ratings.
ReplyDeleteAnd that is the really sad thing about the CW. I don't think that they found their niche quite yet.
Yes, Spring will be the real test for sure. I'm just sadden to see that it is the norm for Supernatural to get 1+ mil now when it used to be a shock to get before 2 mil. Oh how times have changed huh?

Even that's a repeat episode of Fringe, Com'on Fringe Fan let us watch it for the rating!!! We need to save it for the fifth season ><!!!!
