-Ratings Breakdown:
ABC danced its way to another Monday overnight victory, beating comfortable second-place CBS by a considerable 47 percent. But CBS is still the network to beat among adults 18-49. Next was mid-level Fox, followed by depressing NBC and The CW, which is up significantly because encore telecasts aired on the year-ago evening.
Dancing With the Stars on ABC took top-rated overnight honors for the evening with a 12.8 rating/19 share from 8-10 p.m., and growth (in rating) in each of the four half-hours as follows:
Dancing With the Stars (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 12.0/18 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 12.6/19 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 13.2/19 (#1)
9:30 p.m.: 13.3/20 (#1)
One year earlier, Dancing with the Stars averaged a 13.7/20 on 10/19/10. Based on the performances last night, the departure tonight of Carson Kressley should be a no-brainer. But on this show anything can happen.
Castle capped off the evening for ABC with a dominant 8.2/14 at 10 p.m., which was on par from one year earlier. Retention for Castle out of the 9:30 p.m. of Dancing With the Stars was a non-impressive 62 percent.
CBS was equal to one week earlier in the overnights, which means that the network has settled into a very solid Monday, particularly from 8-10 p.m. How I Met Your Mother opened with a 6.8/10 in the overnights at 8 p.m., which built year-to-year by 26 percent (5.4/ 8 on 10/18/10). Week five of breakout hit 2 Broke Girls remained just that with a 7.5/11 at 8:30 p.m., and growth from year-ago occupant Rules of Engagement (5.1/ 7 on 10/18/10) of a hefty 47 percent. Two and a Half Men at 9 p.m. rose to a 10.1/15 (#2), which increased by 13 percent from the 8.9/13 on the year ago evening, while sophomore Mike & Molly (#2: 7.4/11) built by nine percent (6.8/10 on 10/18/10). As much as I like Mike & Molly, why is Molly still living at home? And why did Mike agree to move in? As for Two and a Half Men, the arrival of Ashton Kutcher has completely rejuvenated the veteran sitcom, don’t you think?
At 10 p.m., CBS’ sophomore Hawaii Five-O remains a modest performer at a second place 6.8/11, which dipped by seven percent from one year earlier (7.3/12 on 10/19/10). In the scheme of things, CBS could…and should…be doing better in the Monday 10 p.m. hour.
Over at Fox, Terra Nova remains a modest entry at a third-place 5.2/ 8 in the overnights at 8 p.m. Compared to year-ago occupant House (6.4/ 9 on 10/18/10), this was a loss of 24 percent in the overnights. At 9 p.m., relocated House is showing its age with a third-place 5.5/ 8. Now in season eight, it is time for the medical drama to call it quits next spring.
Elsewhere, NBC has another abysmal Monday showing with its line-up of music competition The Sing-Off (2.8/ 4 from 8-10 p.m.), which never should have aired outside of December, and a repeat of Prime Suspect (#3: 2.1/ 4). In an attempt to attract more eyeballs, NBC will air additional encore telecasts of Prime Suspect on Tuesday, Oct. 25 and Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 10 p.m. ET.
The CW capped off the evening with its low-rated combination of Gossip Girl (#5: 1.2/ 2) and Hart of Dixie (#5: 1.4/ 2), which snagged a full season episode order despite the lack of interest.

Wow, the HH numbers for Terra Nova are awful. I think that House still does modestly well for it's age, and should last this 1 season, and if they can't fill the space with something as good as it, could go for one more season, but as of now, I think it should use up what's left of the ratings and pump them up with a "final season" announcement.
ReplyDeleteThey probably should have made it official and said "final season", but so many people were or are pissed about the Cuddy situation I'm not sure it would have helped that much....
ReplyDeleteI really think ABC should move Castle, it's shown itself to be strong enough to anchor a night which, to be frank, is quite easy on ABC, ABC should have put Pan Am, or GCB or Scandal behind Dancing with the Stars, it makes much more sense.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I really don't get Castle after DWTS... they are so different and I imagine they would have very different viewers. It is a nice exposure for Castle though.
ReplyDeleteHow come the lying game never shows up on the ratings tables? *newbie*
ReplyDeleteExactly, but I still think now it's got it's exposure and is strong enough on its own, ABC show help their new shows out.
ReplyDeleteHm, and NBC thought Chuck was doing poorly. Ouch.
ReplyDeleteIt's not on the major broadcast networks.
ReplyDeleteI think it's because it's winner in that slot. Let's face it, NOTHING retains Dancing's audience well, not even Skating with the Stars. Castle's "unimpressive" retention is countered by it's solid and consistent numbers that far exceed anything else ABC has tried to put after DWTS.
ReplyDeleteThere are also many people who are fairly happy that Cuddy is gone. I doubt that the effect is so big.
ReplyDeleteHIMYM rocks!!way to go...
ReplyDeleteWord. Though ^^ would have you believe all the viewers who've jumped ship are no big deal. Whatever you have to tell yourself.
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking that same thing. NBC simply doesn't have any show that can do well on Monday nights because the competition is too fierce. I know Chuck is entering it's final season, but with the way NBC's shows are flopping, if Chuck's ratings are even decent that might be enough to almost force NBC to give it more episodes. Also, because of Comcast, Chuck has already gotten a lot more promotion than it ever did at any time during season 4: it's already gotten 3 promos and a sneak peek, which is 3 more promos than it ever got in season 4. And with the new Friday time slot and almost no competition, I'm cautiously optimistic that Chuck may get more episodes. The ratings for October 28th are going to be very interesting.
ReplyDeleteSee, House is back to normal.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, it's a wishful thinking. The ratings are sliding down faster than the last year.
ReplyDeleteYeah, monday is brutal. And on fridays Chuck will be up against Nikita and what else?
ReplyDeleteI hope Chuck doesn't fall below 1.0 on the 18-49 demo, but I seriously doubt that the show will get anything above an 1.8. It IS friday, after all.
Even though I would love it, I really doubt that Chuck will get more episodes. I think the only chance of it happening would be if the show got ratings on the 2.5+ on the 18-49 demo (which is almost impossible at this moment) and even in this case it would be a stretch. Well, to get a "back 9" or even a "back 6" order would be great, but I am not putting my hopes up. I'll keep rooting for it though.
Yes, last week ratings were not reflecting the realaty because of the base-ball match. BTW, it's going down. You could expect a 10 millions with Mr. Miller's help.
ReplyDeleteHouse is still the highest rated drama right 18-49 ratings wise, and it's up against shows that are very hard to beat. So yeah, I think it's holding steady tbh. Stupid to have it up against 2.5 men, although I will never get why that pulls so many people in.
ReplyDeleteOf course it's going down. But, to be able to pull down an above-3.0 rating, even in its eighth season, shows it's still a fairly popular show.
ReplyDeleteYeah that's more or less true, which is why I'm very cautiously optimistic. Chuck fans have known for a long time (the last 2-3 seasons) that it should never have been on Mondays. I'm not sure that a 2.5 will be that hard to get. There was one episode, I believe it was the Leftovers, that aired during a week when DWTS was taking a break and another episode that I can't remember the name of which aired on a week when House was a rerun. The ratings for those 2 episodes were above 2.0, and that was with only 1 part of the competition on a break. As for Fridays, yes that's why the ratings will be so interesting. You know, since Chuck is on Fridays this season, what will really be interesting is the Live + 7 day and maybe even the Live + same day ratings since many people (mostly casual viewers) will probably watch it during the weekend. This Saturday (when they're posted), we'll find out.
