I am really trying to love this show, really hard. I just didn't get into the story tonight I guess. This episode was very stand alone and I hope they evolve the show in big ways soon. If they don't, it might as well be on the family channel.
Tonight's episode had the best flow of the episodes thus far.. but It was just too predictable. People get amnesia and go to a place in their past... who didn't see Elisabeth going back to her time with Malcolm? Or whatever Jim's cold being some form of protection against the pathogen? Or Taylor going Rambo in some past mental state?
At least they touched on the myth arc.... albeit for 2 minutes.
I still don't get why they went the family drama route, but regardless.... family drama does not have to be dumbed down drama. Sadly they seem to think it does. everything from the story to the actors is just obvious and with little subtlety or complexity.
This episode was the best of the season so far in all likelihood, but it was still just mediocre and it confirmed the series is just not for me.
Yeah, immediately after Jim got the cold I was like "Oh great, I know what's going to save him from whatever is going on later this episode"...as a matter of fact I was so pissed that it took so long for his genius wife to figure that out.
There was plenty of watery bleh "family drama" but it was still entertaining I guess. I hope the story picks up soon because they've got too much on the line to make it this ridiculously standalone.
The only thing that really got to me was when Commander Taylor suddenly tried to kill himself.
I thought this was really good. Nutso Commander Taylor was my favorite and the pacing was good. I do think they need to drop all the teen romance and cut back on the family drama. This show needs more action and more mystery if it is going to survive.
Just an ok ep tonight. As others have said, it was very predictable and the family drama felt a bit too schmaltzy and thick, but at least it looks like the action and the main mythology plot look to take an uptick according to the promo...
It was an entertaining episode if extremely predictable. Oddly, I'm doing okay with the teen romances but the son of the Sheriff (love that that's his title) being used by the bad guys is just so cliched. But the family stuff I like. It's one of those shows that I wouldn't be watching if there weren't character bits that I liked.
Numerous people have mentioned a strong dislike for the family drama aspects of the show. It's making me wonder if part of the problem here is the marketing. The publicity kept screaming about action and dinosaurs....wonder if they burned themselves by bringing in a number of viewers that have a problem with the Swiss Family Robinson aspect of the show.
I'm hoping they'll start bringing other characters to the same level as the family. (There's only so many times I can handle watching Zoe send everyone into a panic because she found a way to need to be rescued.) Widen the field of interesting three dimensional adult characters and either push the teens into the back ground a little bit...or at the very least...throw away the box of used story tools and write something new and unexpected for them.
What's weird is that I'm more willing to give shows a chance this season because of Vampire Diaries. The first 6 episodes of that series make Terra Nova look like the freshest bit of story telling I've ever seen. No excuse....I'm just a little more patient.
Too bad this show doesn't seem to be getting people's enthusiasm pumped up. It's got everything necessary for it to be a hit. If it's too expensive, they could just tone down on the dino effects now that they have shown them in these first episodes. They could make do with a tail or a claw now and then :-)
Less family drama and more adventure, would probably make the show more appealing to the viewer . I hope it manages to find it's way, as I would hate to start watching it just to find it chopped off like so many other shows. I know, I know..............ratings, commercial breaks and cash are needed :))
Well I like this one!I need to go back over the transcript, but this episode I think gave us some more things to chew on.Even though the explaination was that a guy with alltimers was trying to create a cure, it was interesting that1. There is an outpost specifically for genetic engineering/modification.2. That Malcolm claimed he should go with Jim, because he is responsible for that out post.3. That the 20-some year time period that those that were exposed to the virus believed they were still in, seems like those memories of that time period may directly relate to why some of them are at Terra Nova...Malcolm and scientific research....and Taylor revealed a war against Sumalia in 2031 in which people were abducted to have "experiments" done to them...he thinks Terra Nova is a "code" word for an "operation" ...IMO this may relate to the leader of the sixers, to Taylor's missing son, and the possibility that Terra Nova might not just be about starting over---but maybe to continue a war, or something else...In addition I now can assume that ZOE's name is meant to mean something thematic as it is Greek for "Life" and sometimes meaning, "Life eternal", is Zoe the one who is not suppose to exist...and she is the only one besides Jim to catch a cold (as I don't think either were "suppose" to go to Terra Nova). In just about every episode, Zoe is left behind and almost forgotten...the one character who hasn't had much of a story so far, but I feel confident she is suppose to...
It was predictable, but it also opened up story possibilities...it was interesting that the virus exposed this people to @ 20-some years ago...IMO that time period realtes to know and whether intentionally designed by the scientist, or just as story telling coincidence, these memories I think connect to what ever Terra Nova really is and why some of those people are there...
bleh... I am done with this show... :( Predictable, and too angsty for me... I agree with the comments about ABC / Disney family channels being a better fit for that... The SciFi (the good one) is missing...
The episode started out really slow and dull but once Taylor went nuts things started looking up. Expected turn of events or not, he was still really great. It's just too bad Jim's son is a moron. He should of stuck with the girl who obviously likes him. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. (I use that idiom in the least creepy way possible)
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Kind of jumped the gun on this one huh? It just started a few minutes ago on the East Coast and Central Time Zones, due to the Baseball game

ReplyDeleteI can't see how you thought this was really good. I remember ticking off a list of things that "Dahne would hate" in this episode.
