  1. OH MY GOD, THIS SHOW IS AMAZING. Great moments between Emma and Mary Margaret and Emma and Henry and OH MY GOD SHE KILLED HER OWN FATHER AND NAMED HENRY AFTER HIM OR HE POSSIBLY IS HER FATHER.

AND DOES REGINA REMEMBER? I AM CONFUSED.

  2. I liked how the episode started up right where we left off, the clock tower starting up again! Fun to see it wheel around as the night passed by.

OK I am officially bored of the Evil Queen/ Mayor offering apples in some form and of course the camera pans to apples in her house in the pilot too. Enough.

Welcome to the series Giancarlo Esposito! Sadly I'm not sure the Magic Mirror becomes you as much as Gustavo Fring... However, the Daily Mirror editor is clever and pretty fun!

Thank the gods that Kristin Bauer brought her snark with her, but honestly the only thing I recall from the Evil Queen vs Maleficent is the TERRIBLE VFX. Wow they were bad. I liked the FX in the pilot.... Oh well.

One thing this second episode made clear is that the show has an identity crisis. The Enchanted Forest is not real enough to seem real to me, but it's not fairy tale enough to seem like a magical realm to me either. It's a hodge podge of whimsical and reality and just ends up ineffective to me I guess.

I'm loving Henry!  He and Emma seem to be the best charcters to me. Maybe that's because they are not alter egos of fairy tale characters and therefore are not as cliched or bound by their alter egos.

Last note of annoyance.... The Mayor seems more of an annoyance than malevolent or evil. Half her plans go awry or at best are inconveniences. The EQ does seem more evil and cruel at least. Villains seem feeble if there plans go wrong more often than they go right....

Fun to see the old crone from Hansel and Gretel.. Who would think that's Emma Caulfield! XD

The giant was ok but could have been much better.

Was that the elf who stole the cobbler's shoes? Who was he if not.....

Not sure that was a huge shocker to have Henry be the Evil Queen's father's name. It makes sense she would name the boy after her dad.

This episode was about as good as the pilot for me. Which is to say that if episode 3 does not improve I have one less show to watch on Sundays. XD

I wouldnt say it was "amazing" it would have been probably if it wasnt for the EXTREMELY crappy effects played out for the maleficent scene. Aside from the acting, the effects and writing and directing for the whole maleficent scene was crap and it totally took me out of the story. The other scenes with effects, the characters (great evil queen main episode and rumplestiltskin played by robert was really awsome), the story and I bet queen and gold know who they really are. O and the whole evil people curse creating part wasnt as bad as the maleficent part in effects but it was very close to crap so it was more "eh ok"

i was surprised by the naming thing to and I bet Regina knows most of her evil queen self but not all and same goes for gold aka rumplestiltskin. Robert I think is actually the best actor out of them all he really brings the "evil monster" out!

  5. Glad to know I was not alone in thinking those were third rate VFX at best... Too bad since Maleficent was a very fun character. One of the better on the show so far for me.

  8. Rumpelstiltskin is going to fun!

  9. This episode was far better than the pilot and I thought the pilot was one of the best I've seen this year.  Probably the best thing was the Rumpelstiltskin and Queen / Regina and Gold scenes.  Those were so chilling I was riveted to the screen.  Phenomenal job from the two actors.  I also loved the Maleficent scene and hope we see her again.  Many things have me intrigued still but I feel we got some answers and that is important if I am going to stick with it.  The only thing that bugs me is that I cannot root for Emma.  In the end, she is messing with a mother-child relationship and it irks me.  I know I'm supposed to find her heroic but mostly it seemed like she was throwing a fit.  Not that she didn't have provocation, but she annoys me.  Love how they seamlessly integrate the fairy tale and Storybrook worlds into the storytelling.  Kudos for an awesome episode.

  10. Best part of the whole show.

  11. I find myself cheering for Mr. Gold more than Emma. I know whatever he is up to will be wickedly fun!

do u guys really believe emma believes in henry's whole fairy tale stuff? I know she convinced him that she does but the way she still acts and feels im getting the vibe she feels something wierd is going on but i dont think she really belives that whole. Idk its just my opinion but also she did get rid of those papers which i think she shouldnt have for proof and stuff so that gave me another hint.

  17. I think you're right in part at least.

She is not completely sold yet. I can't tell if she has not come to terms with it all or she has but thinks Henry does not have all the pieces to the Storybrooke puzzle.. Looking for proof or ammunition, either way it helps I guess.

I liked the Maleficent scene. Right, the effects were shit, but apart from that the scene was solid. And uh-oh, I'm already getting sick of Robert Carlyle's Rumpelstiltskin. Fantastic actor, just a little tired of how ole Rumpy acts.

I gave this episode an OK, just as I gave the pilot. I'll be there next Sunday, but it could be my last time watching Once. Adam and Eddy, and Adam and Eddy alone, keep me holding on; otherwise, I'd be done with this show.

  19. I don't think she believes.  She's had a hard childhood and is in a business that relies on evidence to track people down.  I would find it implausible that she falls for such an outlandish story so far.  I think she wanted to rebuild Henry's trust and looked for the quickest way to do it.

  20. My guess is the hunter that the Queen sends Snow White off in the woods with but Darque guessed the Sheriff of Nottingham so that would be interesting too.

  21. I thought the Maleficent scene was good, biting fun.  The special effects were cheesy but up til that point I was sold on both the character and the scene.  I hope she comes back.

  22. I just recognized him tonight and said, "Oh my gosh, it's the guy from The Full Monty." Now every time I see him I'm going to think of his butt. Seriously, I've seen him in other things, and he is just wonderful.

  23. This show brings me back to my childhood, when I read fairy tales over and over. I don't think kids do that anymore, and it's too bad. It's healthy for their developing psyches to able place these grownups around them in roles.

The acting is pretty good all around, but I have trouble understanding little Henry. He either mumbles or talks too fast.

According to the clips from next week, Mary will be revisiting the patient who we all know is Prince Charming. We can figure out what happens next, and that's good. Getting him into the action will be a game changer.

  24. But I think there's a tiny seed of belief. She was taken aback when Mary told her Henry thinks she's Snow White, just after he told Emma that her mother was Snow White.

  25. I actually watched the pilot again with family the other day and I think Sheriff Graham is likely the Huntsmen now too. The comment about tracking people down the old fashioned way just sits well as the Huntsmen.

Many of the names apply to their Enchanted Forest counterparts so I was trying to recall any Grahams in fairy tales. I used to make gingerbread houses (ala Hansel and Gretel) with graham crackers, but I'm not sure that counts! XD

  26. Loved the ep. Alot of great moments that delivered for me: EQ vs Maleficient, EQ and her father, Teacher/Emma, Emma/Henry, Rumplestiltskin, Mr Gold, and Mayor/Emma.... all good stuff. Liked all the references that was made about the path pf revenge and the price that must be paid and if it's worth the price and then I couldn't help thinking if some of the writers worked on Revenge, ABC's other pay back show that I love. good stuff...

  27. Am I the only one not currently disappointed with the effects? :P Granted, I just started watching Battlestar Galactica, so I'm lately being exposed to a dated-effects-heavy show regularly enough that Once Upon A Time's effects may just seem really well done in comparison... (Enjoying BSG so far though despite the effects, for any fans who're quick to take offense where it's unintended.)

I also really liked this episode and thought it was even better than the pilot. I'm happy to see Snow White and the Evil Queen getting more fully developed characters with the two of them not just being good and bad for good and bad's sakes. This episode gave the fairy tale world its first step into the third dimension, so to speak, and that was my main complaint with the last episode.

  28. This episode was better than the pilot.  I am LOVING it!  And I got a friend of mine hooked.

These characters are awesome, complex, frequently not what I expected.  And the performances.  Maleficent and the Evil Queen, Rumpelstiltskin and the Evil Queen...two of the scenes/performances that had me riveted.    I find myself fascinated by the fairy tale story.  The present day story is interesting and this ep gave me a better sense for how the show will grow and work throughout the season. Loved watching the actress playing Emma can go toe to toe the woman playing the Evil Queen (sorry...names are just gone)  as my friend said...got the sense that these two woman are strong bi**hes...in the best sense of the word.

Deep complex story...intriguing characters I am hooked!  Costumes and set design also stuck out as awesome enough to mention.

  29. I completely agree with your first assessment, kids now don't really even read a lot, let alone fairy tales!

And I think the root of little Henry's speech problem is that he has a lot of teeth in that mouth of his.

But I have to say the casting done in this show has been amazing so far, the chemistry between all of the actors is amazing, and ok the VFX are a bit disappointing but I believe we can all agree that that's most expensive part of a production and, to me at least, is not such a bother because the acting and writing is perfect!

Now I have a lot of questions... I truly think that the Sheriff is the Huntsman but does anyone else share the believe that the big bad wolf is Rumpelstiltskin??

I'm loving this show, even the evil characters have depth!

  31. I like all the flashbacks to the old world. And how we find out more and more each week, just keeps getting better and better!

  32. This show is all kinds of cheesy and like Grimm so not subtle (those damn apples haha we get it already) but I am still enjoying it mostly for Emma who is kicking ass, taking names and attacking trees

u really think the effects were good? Aside from the curse smoke i thought they were terrible! The fight between maleficent and eq looked like green screen easily behind them, the fire was bULL CRAP i could see past it and the shielding from maleficent felt like a crappy video game! How does watching bsg make these effects look good. Even terra nova's is far better with the dinos. And then with all the bad guys coming together also looked green screen crap and the vines were terribly put togther. I actually thought this episode had one of the top 5 worst effects in an episode i have ever seen in the last few years.

  37. I was more expecting that her task would be to get the heart of Pam...ähhhm meant to say Maleficent.

  38. This show is just amazing, this second episode was great.. Love It !

  39. The apples are meant to grab the attention of the casual viewer, if they drop the use of this kind of things it would be harder for the non geeky, non super smart audience to remain interested in the show.
