  4. So far, Snow White is one of my least favorite characters in this show.  Here's hoping my opinion changes after this episode.  After all, it would be quite annoying to be rooting for the villains to win just because they are more interesting.  It's like rooting for the perennial underdogs in a game you already know they've lost.

  5. I would think it's too early in the season for Snow White to make such a big reveal.  After all, they already burned all the pages about Emma.

  6. Why is Snow White your least favorite character?

Personally, Regina/Evil Queen is my least favorite character for a variety of reasons.

Does anyone get the feeling that Snow White vaguely knows what's going on? Where did the book come from? Did Snow White Read that book she gave to Henry?

  9. Nice developments are afoot...

  10. I can't speak for Dahne, but Snow White is one of my least favorites because I don't find anything new or interesting about the character. Plus Ginnerfer's performance  has been fairly flat for both Snow and Mary Margaret. Almost as bad as her shining Prince Charming's performance.

I find EQ/ Mayor more interesting because she is a less 2-dimensional character.  Lana's performance has been more dynamic, and she interests me too since they are changing her story making her less familiar to me. Unlike Snow who's pretty much exactly what I would expect. Neither role is my favorite though.

Rumpelstiltskin is exactly what I expected too, however, Carlyle gives such a strong performance that he is still very interesting to me. Along with Mr. Gold who always has that look as if he just swallowed the canary and does not care if you know it. That psychotic arrogance is what I love... plus the fact that no matter what room he walks into you know he is the smartest person (or imp or troll) there. Always a step or 5 ahead of everyone else.

  11. Well, I wouldn't say Snow is my least favorite character, but she and Prince Charming are kind of annoying to me. This may be resolved in upcoming episodes, as we've only just been introduced to them, but I frequently find broadly drawn "good" characters to be incredibly obnoxious. I hate it when the good guys are positioned so they run on sanctimony and self-righteousness, that whole stated and acknowledged "we are the GOOD GUYS" bit that blots out any chance for real, relatable characters that I'd root for.

Consider this... some priggish asshole with a sense of moral superiority gets up on a high horse, many of us would be delighted to see him/her fall on his/her face, yeah?

Also, bland "good" characters are just plain boring to watch... which isn't to say I don't like and typically root for the good guys. It's just, I'd like to be shown why said characters are good rather than told, and I like to get to know the characters and decide for myself who to root for. I'm not just going to take the default position of liking Snow and Charming because they're spouting cliches about their shallow love and happiness instead of running around in black spandex and eyeliner crowing about darkness and revenge. Ground them, and then we'll talk.

  12. I agree that Snow White will be boring if she is just "good" and there is no other layer to her, but I´m starting to think that this hole thing about her being the reason the Evil Queen lost someone and how she doubted good would win (before they came up with the tree to protect the baby), was actually a start of an indication that this might change.
I think it´s too early on to be completly certain about anything.

  13. I watched both the episodes yesterday (good thing the ABC did, showing both episodes at once, for those that had missed it) and I gotta say I´m hooked. It´s got fairytales, and that was enough for me, I guess.

next episode seems interesting, it seems to be about the fairytale of Snow White itself, and it sounds fun. I also hope we get to see the prince wake up at some point.

  14. Yes, and I'm sure it will be the case that - at the very least - the character will be fleshed out enough to feel real. I look forward to it... I'd very much like to enjoy all of the protagonists in this series, and like I said, am only speaking from my initial impressions - I'm just waiting for a reason to.

For that matter, I'd really like a reason to like my least favourite character, the cloying kid. I always feel bad about disliking children on TV, but they're often so obnoxious, I can't help it.

  18. I love this show so much, I had been waiting for it for so long, and it lived up to the expectations.

  19. PURE AWESOMENESS .. can't wait!

  20. You all want Snow White to be bad? Evil? Her morals questioned? Seriously people, that is not a great reasoning for disliking her as a character! FYI, there are people who volunteer
in hospitals, give stuff to charity and are all around good persons in
real life. For me it would be sacrilegious to tarnish a beloved
character from our childhood with any acts of malevolence just for
drama's sake. This is one show where Evil should remain Evil and where
Good should remain Good. No grey areas, we have enough of that in other
TV shows. I don't want my kid to ponder if Snow White is really the good
one or not. There is enough of Grey everywhere around us. I would rather the show be boring, which it is not, then to mess up centuries old characters.

  22. Oh hey! It's David Anders! Coolness, he's fun. I'm enjoying the show, but that was a terribly written promo.

  23. To me the EQ and Rumpelstiltskin are the only two making the Enchanted Forest side seem like a fairy tale. Obviously they are not going to play the EF as "real" so then it should be campy like you said and those two are the only ones playing it up.

Snow may not be the Disney nature lover, but Mary Margaret is. The way she handled that blue bird was directly out of a Disney film. MM seems almost exactly like the Disney Snow White to me. Always good intentions, loves nature etc. I know we will get layers later, but right now her roles are nothing unexpected.

I think the EQ needs to be MORE arch-villain honestly, but the mayor could take it down a notch or two. Like you said they need to have clearly defined counterparts for the two separate worlds and she is too similar in both for my tastes.

I think it would have played much better if the residents of Storybrooke were less like their Forest alter egos and as they began to remember bits and pieces elements of their fairy tale character showed through their "real world" roles. Exception maybe for Mr Gold since he obviously knows (some of) what's going on...

  24. It´s not about her being evil, it´s about being a complete character. It´s about showing us her emotions and why she makes the choices she makes -(and I´m sure her choices will be "good").

But to simply show her as the good girl who has never done nothing wrong, will not do anything wrong and continues to help -without showing us reasons or feelings behind it - will make her character feel flat.
That would not mess up Snow White, it would only add to her character on the show.

  25. Yay David 'Totally Needs His Own Show' Anders!

  26. Yeah, I never once said I wanted Snow White to be bad or evil. I said I want her to be a real, grounded character. "Good" in TV land usually doesn't really mean good a lot of the time - often it means self-righteous and judgmental, or shallow and poorly drawn. I don't think it's too much to ask that characters on TV be interesting and human.

Besides, if you really want Snow White to remain true to her original incarnation, she should be dumb as a box of rocks in addition to being "pure." In the classic story, this is the girl who was almost murdered several times by the same creepy peddler - obviously the Evil Queen - and kept letting her in the damned cottage and accepting her poison!
