This is one that I just have no interest in at all on the surface.
A cast I feel meh about, plot that does not interest me much, and Stars is more miss than hit for me with TV series. Then I consider the creative team behind the project like Glazer, Dwayne Shattuck (Mad Men), and Ed Bianchi (Deadwood and The Killing) and I think it will be something I could like.
It depends how they will handle it. Miami crime scene is probably my favorite, I encourage you to read, watch documentaries about era of crime in Miami from 50's to 80's.
As I mentioned in the other Magic City post, I'm nowhere near sold on this either. I really like JDM and Olga Kurylenko but the entire premise of this show leaves me completely indifferent. If I have any chance at all of liking this show it will be solely because the individual characters turn out to be interesting.
I don't know too much about the 60's crime scene in Miami , but something about the city itself always offends me visually.. The bright colors, the beaches, the architecture... the art deco period is one of my least favorites I guess.....
If the show is good I can ignore that stuff like I do with Burn Notice and Dexter... So here's hoping the writing and story are good!!
I can like JDM (although I do not always like him) and Olga was ok in Bond but she did not impress me exactly. Add in my lease favorite city of Miami... mob stuff which is so often so cliche and predictable.... and STARZ is not a cable network I tend to like all that much for original productions either.
However, IF they can capture the quality of Deadwood or the mystery of The Killing I can see myself liking it. Then again if they capture they sloppy writing of Torchwood or the ridiculous FX of Spartacus... It will not be for me.
I don't even remember Kurylenko from her Bond film. The movie where she convinced me she could really act was the foreign language film "Kirot." I think the English title for the film was The Assassin Next Door. The story is kind of iffy but her role was really great. I digress, anyway...
I agree that if the storytelling isn't there, then this show is a non-starter. I don't think this will be an FX-heavy show like Spartacus so you shouldn't have to worry about that.
I don't expect to be FX heavy either really, but it could still have a similar feeling to me if they try to over stylize it like STARZ did with Spartacus.

I think that will depend on how they stylize it. I think shows like Boardwalk Empire and Pan Am do a great job at immersing the audience into a specific place and time. Spartacus, not so much.
Hah, I actually think that Miami scenery is the best part. It's called Magic City, ofcourse the city will be as a character. But these posters don't really sold me as yet, they are pretty weak.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I cannot wait for this, especially since JDM is in it!
ReplyDeletehe is? Oh I will have to try the show then :)
ReplyDeleteI'm 90% sure JDM is the main character.
ReplyDelete100% he is :)), his character's name is Ike Evans.
