Hell on Wheels - Episode 1.01 - Pilot - Advance Review

AMC is a network that has earned and thrives on its reputation. The network has a certain image in the television business. The network is known for its critically-acclaimed dramas that are mostly likely Emmy magnets. Their dramas are extremely well-written with deep characters, and the stories move at a slow-burn pace.

Despite the brilliance of most AMC series, its one downfall is that it doesn’t hit the mass audience. Mad Men for example is one of the best shows on TV, but some may say that it “moves too slowly”. Whether we agree or disagree with that, it’s something AMC has to deal with. Mad Men may be loved by critics, but its ratings aren’t as near as high as they’d like to see.

In the last couple years, AMC has tried to expand their programming to appeal to a broader audience. They entered the spy-thriller drama with Rubicon (but that failed). They entered the murder-mystery genre with The Killing. They entered the horror genre with the highly successful (and now record-breaking) The Walking Dead. The network that was known for its brilliant yet slow-burning dramas is trying to expand to appeal to a wider and broader audience.

“Hell on Wheels” is AMC’s newest upcoming series, entering the contemporary Western drama genre. Now this isn’t the first time the network has played into the Western genre. In 2006 AMC aired the mini-series Broken Trail which was a success for the network.

  2. I'd be willing to give it a chance as long as it's not Friday nights when Supernatural is on.

  3. It's on Sunday nights at 10 o'clock after The Walking Dead.

  5. This review sounds like it's written by someone from high school doing a report on the show lol

  6. What's the difference between the 'western genre" and the "contemporary western genre"? By comtemporary do they mean it will be set in modern day or is it a more standard western? Either sounds good, I love most AMC shows.

  7. I think he's talking about 'The Swede' played by Christopher Heyerdahl and not 'the Suede'. Well, I read a few reviews on the pilot already and even posted 2 on the site:

Some say it's good, some say it isn't. But it's AMC and they have earned at least the benefit of the doubt with all of their great shows. So I'm really looking forward to this show and hope it'll be somewhere as good as I want it to be.

  8. I'm hoping it is at least in the same ballpark as Deadwood.

  9. Ouch, that wasn't a nice thing to say.

  10. Fixed the "Suede" to "Swede", although I spelled it the French way for a reason. But I realize those who didn't see it will just be confused....so "Swede" it is. Thank you.

  11. Although I appreciate you're opinion, want to show me evidence of my "high school" skills? Criticizing without constructive ways to change seems like a very High School thing to do.

    Here's a mirror.
