Ohhh, that was harsh. Nevertheless, to some degree I have to agree, The Walking Dead definitely isn't playing in a league with shows like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones or Mad Men. But considering the production value and comparing it to the majority of other shows on the air, it's still pretty good.

There should be an embedded soundcloud file, but at the moment it's not loading for me to. Tried to open the source, but it seems like the whole site is down.
I agree, it's not a bad show in itself, it's just that I expected much more from it. The pilot of The Walking Dead is one of the most compelling hours of television I've seen last season, absolutely impressive.
But then it went downhill : boring love triangle (that wasn't in the comic-books) + uninteresting characters and plotlines (I'm especially not fond of the two rednecks brothers that didn't exist in the comic-books), that's not a great combo. I have nothing against Andrew Lincoln, he does a fine job, but I'm not sold on most of the cast yet, except Jeffrey DeMunn (Dale). They should have sticked to the comics, the stories would have been much stronger, much darker and much more intense.
Actually, aside from the first episode, episode 1.05 was a pretty good episode as well. It had some pretty intense moments and a very promising cliffhanger but the last episode ruined it all with some Z-movie situations. The good thing about the end of episode 1.06, though, is that everything is left open, there are no actual stakes left hanging, the writhers can still try and stick to the comic-books from now on.

I was pretty happy with the first season until I started reading the comics and realized the potential the show has and how it failed to reach that potential in its first season. Totally agree on the pilot, that episode was absolutely genius and I really loved it. Perfect acting, great atmosphere, just gripping entertainment. But after that things definitely went downhill.
The love triangle wasn't really in the comic books, partly because Shane was killed off pretty early (something Kirkman said he regrets), but that just seems to be something many show runners can't seem to avoid. I myself don't need it at all. I actually enjoyed Daryl Dixon. It may have something to do with the fact that I'm a huge Boondock Saints and Norman Reedus fan, but he turned out to be my favourite character. But his brother? Not so much. And I can also see why somebody would dislike them all together. Especially Merle seemed like a very one-dimensional character, Daryl has some potential; depends on what happens with him in the second season. Enjoyed 1x03 (had some great scenes plus an interesting ending) and 1x05, but 1x04 was quite terrible in retrospective (don't why Kirkman who wrote this episode had to come up with this stupid and unnecessary Vatos story) and 1x06 was also disappointing. The cast is okay imho. DeMunn, Yeun & Reedus were my stand-outs, Holden was quite good too even though she didn't exactly fit the Andrea description from the comic. And Riggs could be pretty fine too. Plus the guy they casted as Hershel looks great!
Nevertheless I fear they won't really stick to the comic in season 2 (f.e. Still no casting for Tyreese which makes me furious. Instead they introduce new characters that weren't in the comics) . That's why I had a hard time getting stoked for it, but I just decided to put my concerns aside and try to enjoy the season as much as possible. Just hope I'll really be able to do that. But as I said, I get your opinion. It really is a pity that they don't stick to the comics as much as possible. So far it's only a loose adaptation.

Just couldn't get myself to like Boardwalk Empire, but Breaking Bad & The Walking Dead - the man has taste.
ReplyDeleteNice to hear he likes quality television. And he likes The Walking Dead, too.

In case you haven't seen it yet, the file apparently works again.
