Grey's Anatomy - Episodes 8.03 - Take the Lead - Review

Oct 5, 2011

First of all, my apologies if you’re a Jackson Avery fan. You will not like this post. Sorry. I just can’t ‘fake like’ him. Objectivity went right out the window this week.
I have really struggled to write a review this week. I’m not sure why but I suspect it has a lot to do with a combination of a. too much Jackson Avery and  b. boredom from the ‘back to intern’, ‘kids in a playground’ story arc. Although on the whole I was entertained by episode 3, Take the Lead, I was not overwhelmed by brilliance, and really not very motivated to watch for a second time in order that I can fill my review with useful nuggets, observations and opinions. You’re forgiven, if you stop reading now through your own boredom at my prose.
OK there’s a small lie there. I re-watched Arizona taking down Jackson several times. Indeed, I obtained an obscene amount of pleasure from watching it.
Take the Lead of the title refers to the promotion of our 5th year residents to lead surgeon status, where surgery outcomes are logged and success stories take on a whole new level of surgical educational meaning beyond, ‘did the patient make it’. Our fabulous five could be found moaning and whinging at their chief resident for the menial tasks of teaching the interns and then flailing, failing and faking their surgeries. Was anyone else a little bored by the school kids routine? I actually don’t understand this story.  Whilst I ‘get’ that our residents have entered a critical phase of their learning, their blatant insubordination and immaturity has confused me.  All it’s proving is how right Owen was in his decision of April to be chief resident. Last week it was all cute. This week, not so much.
But I AM liking April more and more. Finally the writers have given her a story arc worthy of Sarah Drew’s talent. And it is her own story arc, independent of others. April has the unenviable task of organising the other residents, not as their boss, but still kind of like their boss. We’re discovering that underneath she is perceptive and giving, and yet still has her sense of humour and innocence. And let's not forget that she's actually a very good surgeon. Contrast this to the character of Jackson Avery. As far as I can see he’s a complete failure in surgery. He’s clearly out-shone by Cristina in cardio and by all accounts his plastics career is about to plummet. Besides his successful diagnosis of a mouse can anyone tell me what surgical success he’s actually ever had? On top of this, his new mentor, Mark, has no respect for him at all. All of these points could make for a good story – “Jackson, the underdog, comes good”. Yet the writers portray him as a smarmy, cocky, conceited, over-confident pretty boy. His arrogant pose, holding the x-ray up, with his back to Arizona, his significant superior, as she’s talking to him, praising him even, says it all in about 5 seconds.
Yes, I did it, I added a picture of Jackson

His ‘fail’ in this surgery was about him, and not really about the child he was treating. He was arrogant enough to sign up for it, yet not capable of acknowledging his own limitations without him being psychologically stamped on by Arizona (ahh, yet another moment of joy for me). He’s in a relationship with Lexie, a universally liked character. Again, this in itself could be a good story arc, yet rather than developing the “friendship to romance” on screen that the writers, and even Chyler Leigh, try to convince us is there, his ‘romancing’ of her comes across as shallow and manipulative. Whilst it’s not necessary for me as a viewer to always like regular characters, there must be something about them that allows the viewer to root for them. What is Jackson’s raison d’être? I’m afraid he is utterly unlikable. And unfortunately an unlikable character is a fail.
One might have said that once about Alex. His Grey’s journey has been peppered with incidents that have made him deeply unlikable, and yet always the writers slap us in the face with his demons. So we understand, we forgive and we take him back. This episode was no different. Alex was so nervous of his solo surgery that he did not want to operate on a child. He knows his limitations, and although he came across as gunning for the ‘easy A’, April saw through him.
Is this the Season 8 romance?

And so we saw through him, and forgave him his attitude because we know he cares about his kids. This distinction between Avery’s lack of self-discovery and Alex’s immense, although camouflaged, self awareness pulls these characters poles apart. One we simply don’t care enough about, the other we root for even when it seems hopeless.
We all knew that Meredith was going to totally ROCK her surgery. We know this because Meredith is a very good surgeon. Her ethics maybe questionable, her perspective often dark, but there has never been any doubt that she is surgically gifted. And we also know that Derek knows. Finally we hear from him. Finally he points to the post-it and gives us a great big clue about his internal conflict. I was expecting another week of McAss actually, but am grateful the writers took pity on us and reminded us that Derek himself remembers the post-it.

So Cristina and Teddy have finally found their grove. This is another story arc I don’t quite understand, but I’m willing to keep with it, grateful for the buoyant approach to their mentor/mentee relationship.
I’m very sad that Richard is no longer chief. I shall miss his chiefly ways, and getting one up on the surgeons and residents. Moving forward he has given us Owen, about which I am currently ambivalent...or tired. There is a lot to come with Owen and Cristina, we have only scratched the surface. Him being chief just adds another layer of intrigue to it.
For the 5th years, the attendings move to more of a mentoring role, which gives opportunity for new professional relationships, and deepening of existing ones. The collaboration between Arizona and Alex is being tested by his hesitancy. Callie, has yet to be given a mentee yet she provides a unique example for April to follow – “it will be ok, or it won’t”, ultimately all April can do is try. And Mark has yet to find redeeming qualities in his protégé. These three attendings continue to avoid the drama and yet I am enjoying the contribution all three characters are making to these early season episodes.
Watching Bailey however, makes me want to cry.
Great directing Chandra, but where is Bailey's story?

Overall Take the Lead was amusing, pushed the story forward and provided some further insight into the newer regulars. But all the way through I was thinking ... “I wonder what the all-boys episode will be like”
A few random highlights...and lowlights...
Most irritating line – Jackson: “YOU come on, every surgery we do this year could end up on the oral boards” (Oh Jackson, I can't tell you how much I don't care)
My favourite line this series will be from Arizona “did you want me to call sloan”. It will take a genius to top that.
YAY! Yes, please call Sloan! (If I had the time and ability I would make a caption bubble, even a gif)
Most satisfying moment - Derek pointing to the post-it.
Moment I loved which seems completely irrelevant to the story but completely is relevant - welcome back Arizona on heelies!
Moment I loved which IS completely irrelevant to the story - the ex-chief talking to his sandwich

Written by: Brouhaha aka @pipmaxine who is desperately asking for help:
1. is there a “I find Jackson to be a slimey whiney” support group anywhere?
2. please can Jackson Avery fans write some comments supporting him. I promise to be nice when I reply. I am genuinely interested.
3. if some very brave Jackson fans write comments please can the Jackson haters be nice when replying back
3. it's late, this is not proofed and so no doubt full of errors. Please forgive.
Thank you!

  2. Hello Spartigus15, thanks for the comments, feedback and Jackson words. I get where you're coming, his back story does have parallels with Alex, I agree. The difference is that the writers don't give us enough leverage to care what happens to him. Looking good is not good enough to be a likeable character. I thought there was a real missed opportunity after the shooting where the writers could have given him his own story. At the moment he's coming off as privileged with no emotional depth. Maybe this will change with the appearance of his mother. I remember the scene (can't remember the episode) when he's explaining how being a pretty boy in the family meant academic expectations of him were low, and even then I didn't really FEEL what the big deal was. He was complaining about being too pretty...who complains about being too pretty? Who is going to be empathetic to that?
Your theory makes sense, could be the direction the writers are going but I'm not convinced they're doing the story justice. But I am an optimist, let's hope it gets better, for Jesse Williams' sake - oh and yours, cause you like him!
    thanks!

  3. Hey buddy glad u were finally able to write the review, hope all is well.
Now to the episode.... I like Jackson mainly b/c he is awesome to look at.  Yea he is a cocky so and so but i think that's the intrigue of his  character he is the new Karev,  While Karev is dark and twisted by his past which is the reason he is an ass. Jackson is an ass b/c of his past as well, it seems ridiculous to say but Jackson is clearly haunted by the success of his family name his grandfather Harper Avery and his mother being played by Debbie Allen is apparently a remarkable surgeon in her respected field.  Jackson is trying to feel his way through and find his nitch, he has so much to live up to that he to is tragic. (i know u probably hate that idea but thats just what i think)
I must agree with you my favorite scenes were definitely from Arizona this ep. she was hilarious (yes the heelies are back).
I really enjoyed the advice Callie gave April, I think it was spot on and more helpful then anyone could have put it.  Who would know best other than the person who failed at the same position before.
Chief will always be Chief it doesn't matter/ that wont change.
Like I said last time I love angry Bailey!!! Chandra does conflict like no other and its spot on for comedy. But i must say i cant wait for her triangle arc to start, excited!!!!
Finally Finally Finally- they acknowledge the post it, i have been screaming this since the season finalie and Derek finally acknowledged it.  Im still annoyed that he has the revelation and he understands who Mer is and why she does the things she does but he still is angry.  I get that its frustrating but geez stop with the punishment lets just move on and build a new.
Owen/Cristina look seemingly ok but we know there is still more to come specially now that Owen has this new position. They still havent talked about the abortion but b/c of Owens new position time will not be set aside for the discussion which mean emotions will fester and boil to fever heights. Overall I enjoyed ep. 3 not emmy worthy but entertaining none the less.  It was the third episode we have plenty more season to go.  Im still excited about whats to come.  Great Review as usual buddy!

  4. I'm really happy to see another great review from you, thanks a lot and do not stop please.Absolutely agree on Avery, I don't like him, I'm still not able to see the sense of this character and I have a provocatory question, may be the writers trying to make a "bad poor copy" of old Mark? Mark doesn't deserve this.Loved Arizona for her way to keep him back at his right position.Arizona is incredible, incredible the heelies (welcome back) and the way she interacts with Karev explaining him clearly and without filters what he is doing (the way she showed to be bored about the solo surgery of Karev is something) and why (Karev that choosed the simpliest way to get results cause is scared about a real medical case with the kid. where's his alleged hardcore passion for kids and peds??) and what he needs and why (caring friends).Loved Mark's hilarious comment and new nickname for Avery "goofer" instead of gunther is genial. Seriously he has been beyond hilarious! Thanks Mark I appreciated.Loved the caring way of Callie to help April sharing her own experience on that. Callie is grown up in a wonderfull way as person and professional.Loved the new funny Teddy and the new "comic" side of Teddy/Cristina relationship, glad she understands that maybe this is the only way to go through the Cristina's protective walls and mechanisms. They both will grow through this process.Still do not like Alex I still do not believe in his alleged golden side, he's is still choosing the simpliest way to get the results sucking up others good real golden qualities (like Arizona or April carefully and trustfully ways to interact with patients and medical skills etc) giving back rudeness and crap to everyone just because he is nervous. C'mon he needs to show this golden side I'm still waiting for an action. Selfish poor human being. I'm sorry but I don't like him.Bailey is doing with Hunt what she did with Arizona, she needs to be convinced.

  5. Ha ha! Thanks for your comment and kind words.
Alex has a heart underneath. I've yet to see Avery's.
I've just written the review for 804 (although it's not published yet) so I haven't stopped writing. Although it maybe an unpopular opinion! Wait and see. Should be up today or at worst by the end of the weekend.

  6. I don't think it was that episode, I think he said it to Lexie - well doesn't matter. I imagine that some people do feel a burden with the beautiful label, or overwhelmed by family brilliance but until the writers give us a clue into how Avery REALLY feels about it and how it hurts him that we might have sympathy for it, then I will always want to push him off the cliff. Saying that, it took a while for people to be sympathetic to Mark (and indeed some people are still not sympathetic to him). Only when we really understood his own background and his deep desire to have kids did we really root for him and Lexie - IMO anyway!

  8. lol
I couldn't agree with you more that they dropped the ball with his PTSD story line.  That could have definitely given him depth and opened the audience up to a more vulnerable empathetic character.  I remember that episode i think it was when his grandfather was in the hospital he was talking to Meredith right? I dont understand either why he made that dumb comment.  If anything it pisses ppl off like oh yea it must suck to be pretty its sucj a burden.  but then again if u think about it some pretty ppl do feel less than b/c of how attractive they r ppl think they are not intelligent.  Ex Yang and Izzy S1 E1 off the break Yang thought Izzy was a ditz b/c she was blond and a model.  Or the patient who recognized Izzy from the magazine.  It can be a burden (ps. I will never defend oh show any sympathy towards Izzy again) lol But hopefully with the addition of the Lovely and widly talented Debbie Allen we get more from Jessie Williams.

  9. Really enjoy your indepth reviews.  Bailey is a bully.  When she had residents, it was cute. She used to be hardcore, but soft-hearted.   Now it’s just pathetic and she's belligerent and obnoxious.  Sorry, don’t see the  triangle.  She’s got the personality of a frog.  As for Derek, he needs Dr. Wyatt stat.  He’s so egotistical.  He yells at Mer in the bedroom that she wouldn’t listen to him in the OR, “Drop the clip.”  Why should she?  Because HE spoke?  Yet, she was right and her surgery is successful, but he still couldn’t acknowledge that.  Also he lies.  Pointing at the post-it and saying, “I promised not to run.”  Hello.  What did he do in the first episode when he was gone for 5 days, not overnight, not a day, but 5 days.  That’s why the social worker became suspicious that they were living apart and started drilling Meredith with questions.  Meredith freaked and tried to run off with Zola, knowing that was not the right thing to do.  Then Derek all of sudden appears at home with no clue as to how that came about.  Guilt for running?  Recognized it’s the only way he can get Zola back?  What the heck happened?  But still his nasty, arrogant, petulant self.  Derek is not as innocent and wronged as he makes out to be.  He’s immature and can’t admit when he’s wrong.  Mark nailed it when he told Meredith in Season 3 at the bar, “He’s damaged, Meredith.  I’ve damaged him.”   He is damaged and from the looks of it, this storyline will continue for half the season.  Somebody please get him to see Dr. Wyatt as he needs help badly.  I read comments that Arizona was wrong in the way she treated Avery.  I think she was right on because before you volunteer for a surgery on a kid that could possibly be maimed him for life, you better be damn confident that you can do a perfect job.  She was absolutely right in questioning him.  The Chief will always be the chief and will always have the wisdom of the Chief.  The episodes are getting lamer and lamer and there’s nothing fresh about them.  Triangles, Meredith and Derek breaking up, Derek yelling and call her names.  No one is growing up, no one is maturing.  We keep going back to the same things.

  10. Thanks very much!
To be honest I don't understand what they're trying to do with Derek. I get the feeling they wanted a big break up, that wasn't about cheating or a 3rd party so they came up with this. It;s not a bad story actually, but they're just not quite selling it to us. The adoption was too quick for any kind of reality. No one would get the child that quickly. If the social workers had done one ounce of the prep needed they would have many many questions still be be answered before they even think about approving MerDer for adoption.
In the end Derek will come around. Hopefully Meredith will get the chance to give HIM a hard time.
Bailey - I miss her and agree with you, she's being a bully. I was stunned that she would treat April the way she did in the premiere. You'd think she'd be all 'happy' given she's doing Eli.
Review for 804 is up now, if you're interested.
