Gossip Girl's Josh Schwartz Planning a Remake of the U.K. Hulu Hit Misfits

Good news for loyal Chuck fans mourning the fact that the show begins its final season later this month: Series co-creator Josh Schwartz is planning another foray into the sci-fi arena. Vulture has learned exclusively that the prolific writer-producer (Gossip Girl, Hart of Dixie) is planning to adapt the British sci-fi drama (and Hulu hit) Misfits for American audiences. Our spies say Fake Empire, the Warner Bros. TV-based production company Schwartz runs with partner Stephanie Savage, has just finalized a deal for the rights to the show, which revolves around a group of working-class teens who find themselves endowed with superpowers following an electrical storm. (Think the good, first season of Heroes with Buffy-esque snark and a similar Scooby-ish gang). Schwartz will team up with U.K. Misfits creator Howard Overman to write a U.S. translation. There's no network attached as of yet, but given the response to the original series, it's hard not to imagine it finding a Stateside TV home.

Misfits, unlike many imported formats, has already proven itself to be of interest to American viewers. This past summer, Hulu began streaming the freshman season of the show, and the results were impressive: It regularly ranked among the site's most-streamed series whenever new episodes dropped, with Variety estimating more than 9 million views to date. This American success mirrors a strong run on Britain's E4 network, both critically and commercially: The most recent season of Misfits averaged over one million viewers per episode, doubling ratings from 2009's season one. In addition to healthy ratings, the show shocked many observers last year by besting the mighty BBC machine to garner the BAFTA award for best drama series. Critics have also responded favorably to the show's sharp use of wit and Skins-level realism in depicting teen behavior (the original isn't shy about rough language and nudity). The comparisons to Buffy and Skins would seem to make Schwartz a potentially ideal collaborator for Overman: The writer's known for injecting scripts with plenty of wry banter, and both The O.C. and Gossip Girl pulled no punches in depicting the teen animal in its natural, sex-and-alcohol-obsessed state.

Schwartz and Overman are foregoing the traditional development process, in which a network buys a pitch from a scribe and later decides whether or not to film a pilot. Instead, the two have opted to write the new Misfits on spec. This means that, schedules permitting, they'll write a pilot in the next few months and then shop the finished product to networks late this year or early in 2012. While not the usual route to the small screen, it's becoming increasingly common for projects with well-known writers or actors attached early in the process. Keifer Sutherland's upcoming mid-season Fox drama, Touch, was a spec script, as was NBC's upcoming Awake and the CW's Ringer (which began life at CBS). One advantage of the spec path is that it lets creators develop a pilot without networks nitpicking development details. In the case of Misfits, potential buyers will also have the advantage of watching previously produced episodes of the U.K. original.

Schwartz (who makes his debut as a feature director next October with Paramount's Fun Size) and Overman will both serve as exec producers on the U.S. Misfits, along with Fake Empire's Savage and Len Goldstein, and Murray Ferguson of Misfits' U.K. production company Clerkenwell Films.

  1. I'd be interested to see how this goes. I'm generally against american reboots of british shows; i just don't think our cultures are different enough to warrant a remake, and it's not difficult to acquire the foreign version of the show, so i dont think it even makes it more accessible. Obviously, there are plenty of remakes that do well and that I've liked, but im always tentative when new ones are announced.

  2. Putting this in perspective: This is like BBC remaking a show like Fringe. Just WRROOONNGG.
    But maybe it'll be good?

  3. I wouldn't consider Josh Schwartz the best choice for a Misfits remake... I don't regularly watch the show but catched 2 episodes when in London and I liked it.
I love Chuck, but hate(d) OC and Gossip Girl and am really not interested at all on Hart of Dixie (seems to be too soapy for my taste). I am not very fond of remakes in the first place... lets see how it goes.

  4. If Americans have seen the UK version of the show and like it, what's the point of a remake?  Usually the excuse is to tailor the show for American tastes, but in this case that appears unnecessary.

  5. I'm scared by another remake, I don't like at all 'cause I always prefer the original (where is the creativity these days then? I turn around and I see everything "inspired from" comics, books..reboot, remake.. wth?). Especially I don't want nothing by Schwartz, everything he touches turns to trash, I hate it.

  7. I worry that this will be Skins US all over again.

  8. Wouldn't it cost less to license the UK version for broadcast, than to produce an entirely new show?  The ad revenue is the same in either case, so reducing or eliminating production costs means more profit.

  9. Oh it would have to go cable, no network would touch it with a barge pole XD  I'm split on the decision at the moment, Overman is a bloody genius imo so as long as he is co-producing then it should be ok.  I just don't see the point, lol.

  10. Can't be done. I predict now that they will totally arse it up! If the original was that popular on hulu just show the bloody original!!!! Honestly trust your fellow Americans and dont give them an inferior watered down shiny version, please just this once leave in the grime and let them enjoy it, warts and all?

  11. I could not get into the series very much when it first started. I did see potential but something just kept me from connecting like I do to shows I really enjoy.

US remakes are VERY hit or miss for me. I loved Touching Evil with Jeffrey Donovan, never liked The Office (US) but like Gervais' version. Not sure how I feel about Prime Suspect yet, but I do know it's not nearly as good as the original!

Maybe I could connect to the remake unlike the original? Never know I guess....

  12. Thing is, why would you want to fork out for a cable channel when you have already seen it on Hulu.  I guess that's part of the reason for the remake, plus with Overman firmly in place to over see it I think it will be alright, unlike how Being Human was bastardised :(

  13. aww, shame you didn't get into it, how many episodes did you watch?  It's one of my favourite shows ever, so funny and yet it suddenly spins on you and you feel almost guilty for laughing lol

  14. Ii think I tried 3 if I recall....

I meant to give it another try and start again, but I never found the desire to check it out again I guess.

Maybe I will check it out again this Holiday season..... I keep hearing good things so it can't hurt...

  15. I think there are certain characters that you either live or hate, some can be very insulting or down right rude which puts some people off XD

  16. Will Robert Sheehan be in it? Because then and only then I'll watch the remake. :)

  17. I don't recall exactly what it was I did not like... I do know I did not like The Inbetweeners on E4 either. Maybe it's just the sense of humor of the network?

  18. I didn't get Inbetweeners either, I'd watch it with my mates while they roared with laughter and I sat there with a look of bewilderment on my face, lol.  The only other E4 show I've seen is This is England I think, again not really my cup of tea, but more watchable due to some amazing actors (including Neil from The Fades and Rudy, the new guy in S3 of Misfits).

The first episode I saw was 1.04, which is a time travel story that's also a flashback.  It was very cleverly done which is why it caught my interest I think.

  19. Have you already forgotten how the Skins remake went?
AMERICA, THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

  20. If they base all the characters on the UK version, the Amercan Nathan is bound to be an uncharismatic cunt.

  21. Because they're the same thing...

  22. The problem with mainstream american shows is that they dont do gritty very well which works for most of their shows cos we love the glam and glitz of them. But they insist on pretty clean perfect young people for the most part and thats just not the Misfits who are just grungy and come from the yucky chavvy estate. The American producers wont be able to resist the urge to clean it all up a tad and lose the essence of the show.  There are so many writers out there im sure who could come up with fresh original stories who should be given the chance rather than rehashing shows that wont fit.

  23. That has to be my smallest post ever, but I stand by it :P
It's a terrible idea, and don't understand why the UK can import US programs, but the US feels the need to remake UK programs.

  24. WTF NOOOOOOOO! Leave Misfits alone! Watch the UK version like the rest of us Americans and be satisfied!!!!

  25. I guess we still gotta get back at them for remaking That 70's Show. Revenge! Sweet, sweet revenge!

  26. three things they need to make it great...

put it on HBO OR STARZ.... ETC..  it just wont work on reg tv or some basic cable chan. like tbs or usa..or TNT.... etc... with the language and nudity that comes with the org....

they have GOT to search for the right actors to do it any sort of justice...

and the writing has to be spot on....
