FOX want their slice of the fantasy series cake. They’ve paid 100 gold coins for Magicians — a drama series adaptation of Lev Grossman’s popular fantasy novel, with a script commitment plus penalty if it doesn’t go forward.
The high-concept series will be written by Ashley Miller & Zack Stentz (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Fringe) and produced by Michael London (Milk), Shawn Levy and Michael Adelstein.
Based on Grossman’s book, which is seen by some as a grown-up version of Harry Potter, the one-hour drama follows a group of 20-somethings in New York who study magic and have access to a magical world.

Some one I know read the series and recommended it to me, but I have not read it yet.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like it could make for a good series if handled properly.I would have more faith if it were on AMC, HBO or Showtime.....
I think Fox might mess this up. But we can wait and see.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I can gather its quite a dark series with sex and drug use which I can imagine Fox would tone down too much. Who knows its early days yet.
ReplyDeleteNever heard about the book, but it sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteLike you I would prefer to see it on HBO, AMC or Showtime. Not sure that Fox can pull it of.
I was considering reading it, but forgot about the book. Now there's a stimulation to read!
ReplyDeletehere's what AMC would do, they will produce a great first season of 6 or 7 episodes and then slash the show's budget by half and ask the EP to shoot half the episode indoors and half outdoors and they fire him/her when he/she refuses. :P
ReplyDeleteamong the networks, I think FOX or ABC would be the best for a show like this. FOX has been supporting Fringe even when the ratings were bad. I think it might be a good fit, but I think it would have been better at Showtime or HBO.
ReplyDeleteYou raise a good point! XD
ReplyDeleteEven if their management sucks and seemingly almost tries to ruin their shows, some of the best TV of the decade (if not ever) has been on AMC.
I guess I can give the management a pass since the quality of their creative talent is so exceptional!
But damn! Why do they have to mess with it all? If it ain't broke don;t fix it! Far as I can se none of their series are broke.... Well except for their budget thanks to the management.....
Yeah... I'll probably watch this if it goes through...
ReplyDeleteNow, first point of action: add the books to my reading list.
yeah, Breaking bad and The Killing are really good.
