Thanks to Daniel for the heads up.
Marvel’s The Punisher flopped twice at the box office (even though the second movie is great) but they haven’t given up on the murderous vigilante. According to Deadline, Criminal Minds showrunner Ed Bernero has adapted the comic for a pilot commitment from Fox. The series would be an “an hour-long procedural” which would see Frank Castle (aka The Punisher) “as a rising star detective with the New York Police Department” who moonlights as a vigilante, “seeking justice for those the system has failed.” This character is also known as Dexter Morgan or Daredevil. Seriously, why not just adapt Daredevil? That movie flopped too and instead of cop procedural, you’d have a courtroom procedural. The unoriginality of network TV would prevail! Fox is also developing a series based on the DC comics hero The Spectre. I hope the character’s day job is in a hospital.

Hmmm well seeing how recent Superhero shows have flopped on the main networks I can't see this doing any better.
ReplyDeleteThe Punisher is infinitely easier to get over because there are no super powers and the cheese factor is to a minimum.
ReplyDeleteI wish this was on AMC or Showtime though, because this is an R-rated character. A thoroughly dark story of revenge killings. Not exactly Fox fare.
Yeah all they will do is tone it down too much
ReplyDeleteUmm,on fox,i could be wrong but i don't think its going to fly!
ReplyDeleteExactly. Makes me wonder if the actual revenge won't be much of the story.
ReplyDeleteI hope it flops. This abomination isn't The Punisher. The Punisher doesn't work as a cop and moonlight as a vigilante!
ReplyDeleteHe IS The Punisher. It's not just something he does in his spare time.
Christ, they really will turn anything into a procedural these days.
i have a feeling that they are looking for a replacement for Fringe :(
ReplyDeleteThis is terrible.
ReplyDelete1. The description indicates they're intent on changing Frank Castle's origin. Bad move, Ed Bernero. Fans of the character most likely already hate you for that.
2. A Punisher series should be on FX, HBO or Showtime (or maybe Starz). Network television is going to neuter the character, the dialogue, and the action.
3. This is way too much of a male-skewing show for network television, a medium that has an ever-increasing female viewership. Last time FOX had a heavily male-skewing action show (Human Target) they tried to compensate by adding 2 female characters and it blew up the chemistry of the whole show.
Best case scenario:
FOX passes on the pilot, Marvel re-tools the project so it's faithful to the source material, and then shops the franchise to a premium cable network.
Perplexing. I was hopeful when I saw Bernero's name. I'm trying to think of the las successful adapted super hero series...Flash is coming to mind and that only ran one season...
