Just a couple days ago we got word from producer Brian Grazer that $45-50 million had been cut from the budget for the adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Dark Tower to make it more appealing to studios. While Grazer and director Ron Howard are still looking for a place to set up the film portion of the adaptation, we can’t forget that the ambitious project also calls for a couple seasons of television between three planned films. Thankfully, it doesn’t sound like that side of the deal has been hard to set up as Grazer recently spoke with MTV and said, “We’re going to do [The Dark Tower] with HBO. We’ll do the TV with HBO, and we’ll do the movie with… to be determined. We’ll do it right.” Seems like the best home for material like this, that way there aren’t any restrictions as to the violence, language, etc. No details as were offered as to just how long each season will be or anything like that, but it sounds like we might get some solid information sooner than later so stay tuned.

HBO seems like a better match for this than NBC, but I'm still not a fan of this adaption plans. It's way to complex, I really don't think they can realize a satisfying adaption...
ReplyDeleteCompletely agree, I'm really nervous about this adaptation because I want it to be done right. Getting HBO involved is definitely the first step in the right direction
ReplyDeleteI love Stephen King, but I'm not interested in these books. Maybe I should read them.
ReplyDeleteI know a lot of people love the Dark Tower series, but I've tried half a dozen times, and I can't get into it at all. There's so many better King stories.
ReplyDeleteHBO might be a better match for King's work than NBC, but let's face it: With the exception of, "The Green Mile," there isn't ANY setting that works well with Stephen King's books. Remember, "Cujo," "The Shining," and "Maximum Overdrive?"
ReplyDeleteThis is excellent news, because while I didn't trust the whole Universal NBC deal very much, I think Warner Bros and HBO are a much better match for such an epic story
ReplyDeleteAt least it's still going to happen.
ReplyDeleteI hope this project just becomes an HBO show. Why bother with a movie when no one is interested? I mean, yeah, the budget would be way higher than an HBO show... But it would also be weird to see feature film level SFX and then sink down to 5 million an episode.
ReplyDeleteFreaking out over this. HBO is the perfect match for The Dark Tower no other network would do it justice. I know people think it can't be adapted but if A Song of Ice and Fire can then I certainly think this series can be.
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I may not get that HBO version of The Punisher like I want but this is a really good consolation prize.
