HBO RENEWS EMMY®-WINNING DRAMA SERIES BOARDWALK EMPIRE FOR THIRD SEASON
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 12, 2011 – Following resounding critical approval for the series’ second-season debut on Sept. 25, HBO has renewed BOARDWALK EMPIRE for a third season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.
“Following a triumphant first season, I was eager to see what Terry Winter, Martin Scorsese and the rest of their stellar team had in store, and they continue to surpass our highest expectations,” said Lombardo. “The response from the media and our viewers has been extremely gratifying.”
From Terence Winter, Emmy® Award-winning writer of “The Sopranos” and Academy Award®-winning director Martin Scorsese, BOARDWALK EMPIRE is set in the 1920s in the early days of Prohibition, and chronicles the life and times of Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, the undisputed leader of Atlantic City, who was equal parts politician and gangster.
The renewal of BOARDWALK EMPIRE is the latest in a number of recent drama series pickups, following “True Blood,” “Game of Thrones” and “Treme,” as well as commitments to the new series “Luck,” “Veep,” “Girls,” “Life’s Too Short” and Aaron Sorkin’s as-yet untitled project.
Among the early critical raves for the new season of BOARDWALK EMPIRE, New York’s Daily News called the show “delicious entertainment” and “one of the best shows on television,” while Daily Variety termed it “consistently bold and lusty,” as well as “good to the last illicit, intoxicating drop.” The Boston Globe hailed BOARDWALK EMPIRE as “a must-see show” and “remarkable,” and Entertainment Weekly noted that “drama this good should be illegal.”
BOARDWALK EMPIRE ranks among HBO’s most popular series with an average gross audience of 10.7 million viewers.
At the recent Primetime Emmy® Awards, BOARDWALK EMPIRE led all programming with eight awards, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Martin Scorsese).
In Jan. 2011, BOARDWALK EMPIRE received two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Television Series – Drama and Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama (Steve Buscemi)
The series also received two Screen Actors Guild awards, for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series (Steve Buscemi).
Season two credits: Created by Terence Winter, BOARDWALK EMPIRE is executive produced by Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg; co-executive produced by Gene Kelly and Howard Korder; produced by Joseph Iberti and Rick Yorn.

ReplyDeletegreat news!! :D
ReplyDeleteThat's great news, I think i'm enjoying the 2nd season better than the first!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a terrific news, but sadly next time we hear about HBO it might not be for a renewal, my guess is at least 1 of their 4 dramedies currently on the air has only a few weeks left to live... they can't possibly renew all of them given their ratings, I would defintely want to but I'm afraid they won't. The live ratings don't matter much on a pay-cable channel, I know, but it gives an indication of how well a show is doing, and Hung, How to Make it in America, Bored to Death and Enlightened do not have great numbers.
ReplyDeleteBoardwalk Empire is the only show doing great ratings-wise on HBO, this fall.
Boardwalk Empire (Sundays at 9pm) :
Episode 2.01 : 2.91 million viewers (1.3% of the 18-49 demo).
Episode 2.02 : 2.60 million viewers (1.1% of the 18-49 demo).
Episode 2.03 : 2.86 million viewers (1.2% of the 18-49 demo).
Right after, neither Hung nor How to Make it in America perform well. Hung had True Blood as a lead-in for its first two seasons, but now with Boardwalk Empire (drawing 2 million viewers less than True Blood), turns out Hung lost more than half its viewership, and we're only at week 2... Right after, HTMIIA is in Ray's path but unlike Hung it isn't just after Boardwalk Empire so the season premiere completely flopped, and the numbers for episode 2.02 are not available because the show wasn't even in the top 35 of cable shows.
Hung (Sundays at 10pm) :
Episode 3.01 : 1.11 million viewers (0.5% of the 18-49 demo).
Episode 3.02 : 1.01 million viewers (0.4% of the 18-49 demo).
How to Make it in America (Sundays at 10:30pm) :
Episode 2.01 : 0.47 million viewers (0.2 % of the 18-49 demo).
Episode 2.02 : 0.?? million viewers (0.?% of the 18-49 demo).
As for their two Monday dramedies, Bored to Death and Enlightened... what the hell was HBO thinking ? Putting 2 smart dramedies on a Monday (which has never been the night for HBO original series*, HBO subscribers just might not have been aware these shows were on that night), against Ashton Kutcher's abs, a cranky doctor, a singing competition and a dancing competition ? That was a crazy move.
If this poor programming gets the wonderful Bored to Death cancelled, I'll be freaking pissed off. These bad ratings + Ted Danson on CSI worry me a lot (even if it was said he could star in both shows if Bored to Death were to be renewed for a fourth season, a decision that should not even be in question). Episode 3.01 was completely hilarious, I missed those guys a lot. And I enjoyed Enlightened much more than I expected, I'll 'tune in' next week and the following weeks too, it has potential.
Bored to Death (Mondays at 9pm) :
Episode 3.01 : 0.24 million viewers (0.1% of the 18-49 demo).
Enlightened (Mondays at 9:30pm) :
Episode 1.01 : 0.21 million viewers (0.07% of the 18-49 demo).
* Except for the outstanding In Treatment, whose episodes aired throughout the week in season 1 and then on Mondays/Tuesdays for seasons 2 & 3. The show was ultimately cancelled
last year, clearly not because of its cost, the only reason was the ratings, I guess (and the average for season 3 was around 250 000 viewers, better than Bored to Death and Enlightened's premiere episodes !). Fortunately the last episode of In Treatment makes a decent Series Finale.
Long live the Empire. It's a damn good show. Who wants to make some bathtub gin to celebrate?
ReplyDeleteGreat news! This past week's episode was solid!
