Hmm... that was not such a great promo for the series to me.
Alcatraz will live or die by the mythology and mystery of how and why the 256 criminals/prisoners disappeared - not seeing the team capture them like some US Marshall series.
The action will not save the show if the mystery is sub-par. Very odd to see them show ONLY action when every press release or info tese about the series reports on the mystery at the center of the series.
My guess is that it does not bode well for Alcatraz that they are pushing the action now and not the mystery.
If it is just them trying to avoid the serial promotion error syndrome like "What is the Event" I can respect it. IT still feels odd and like it is not a good sign.

I think that's exactly why they did it that way. The only real "big mystery" show with any success has been Lost. All the genre shows in the same vein as Lost (The Nine, The Event, FlashForward, etc.) have crashed and burned so a lot of viewers are probably weary of dipping back into something like that. I'd say that's why they're downplaying it.
In fairness, the promo did have the big question of the mythology as it's main focus, but they have to show some of the action sequences in the promo to try and attract a larger crowd initially. It is only 29 seconds to appeal to as many people as possible...
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
So excited for this show! As cool as its been to have Michael Emerson back on tv, it'll be cool to have Hugo back. This and Awake next year!
ReplyDeleteThanks!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how they primarily focused on the action rather than the mystery.

Hope its gonna be good! *cough* and makes sense with a good ending... *cough* Lost *cough*
ReplyDeleteDo you want a cough drop?
ReplyDeleteAlso, not to mention this is a TV spot aimed at a more mainstream audience. Thus, the more general action esque trailer. :)
ReplyDeleteI volunteer to shove it in. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's a teaser...

ReplyDeleteLooks like the next big disappointment to me.
ReplyDeletedon't know what to make of that.. I'd rather watch the pilot then judge..
