Hey Guys,
Yesterday saw Dean Winchester pull off a strong victory over Daenerys Targaryen to see that Supernatural has two entries reaching the Semi-Finals... In the other poll Damon Salvatore beat Chuck Bass to set up tomorrows battle against Richard Castle.
Today therefore is the second all-Supernatural showdown of the tournament, the question is can the ever popular Dean Winchester beat the very currently popular Castiel after his dramatic storyline over the first couple of episodes of season seven... it's time to find out!
In the prediction competition, a real twist could be in-store as STV Owner DarkUFO has thrown himself in contention for the victory, only 4 points off the lead on 98.Currently leading is JerMd on 102 points, with Ems in second place 3 points behind. (Should Dark pull off the victory, the prize would go to the runner up, just for your information :P) To see your score head HERE
For anyone new to the competition the rules are simple. Every day there will be a new set of polls between characters who are bidding to become the winner of the second STV Character Competition.
All you have to do is to vote for whichever characters are your favourite and at the end of the 24 hours whichever character has more votes will be the winner and will progress into the next round. There are three rounds before the quarter finals, semi finals and then the final...

Dean and Cas are both fantastic layered and loveable characters, played by fantastic talented people, on a fantastic show. Voted Cas because I support him still, and I still kind of want to punch Dean for what happened last episode, but I'd be more than happy if Dean won too.

The fact that Dean is in a major role isn't what makes him a great character, this is unfair even to Dean. And the fact that Cas is a guest star doesn't mean he can't be a better character than the major ones. People like who they like, talking like if everyone needs to vote for Dean because he is a main character is a very stupip thing. Vote for Dean because you like him better. Vote for Cas because you like him better. That's all. Right now, I like Cas better, so I voted for him. But I really like Dean too and if Cas has to lose to anyone, I prefer it to be Dean. I know Cas wouldn't mind. He gave everything for Dean already, what's a pool, right? ;]

Just because I prefer Castiel as a character that doesn't mean I don't love Dean and that doesn't make me a bad fan either. If he has to lose to someone, I'm glad it's another Supernatural character. But I really love Castiel and I think he brought a lot to this show and he deserves the love right now, in my opinion.

i've been a massive deangirl for the last 4 or so years, only since season 7 started have i moved back to loving both brothers equally. castiel is a brilliant character and i love every moment he has on screen.
i just love sam and dean more, and i always will. this show is about sam and dean.
however, i will be happy with whoever wins because they both deserve to just as much as the other :D

Have you all forgotten who Dean is? Personally, when I first started watching Supernatural several years back, I was immensely entertained by his character and continued watching because of him (and the storylines of course).
After 6 seasons, Dean Winchester has become one of my favorite characters of all time.

Regardless of that fact, it's common at times for people to prefer the supporting to the leads... look at people's love for Ben in LOST over characters such as Jack & Kate. Look at people's love for Tony Almeida in 24 over Jack Bauer.

Just because this is "Dean's show" doesn't mean I have to like Dean best. Hell, Terry Belfleur is my favorite True Blood character and he's, what, a tertiary character? It's ok to like whichever characters at whatever varying degrees of affection for whatever reasons. And don't get me wrong, I do like Dean. I just like Cas more.
ReplyDeleteBesides, Castiel WAS a main character for two seasons, and has been an integral part of the series since S4, so...despite what the new PTB seem to think about Cas being expendable & his storyline being used up (um no), I think Supernatural is as much his show now as Dean & Sam's.
Then again, I'm probably not a true fan & probably not watching the show "the right way." So. *shrug*
Really guys? Dean is losing? I mean, I love Cas and all that... But... I feeli like Dean lost popularity for 'what he did to Cas'. Actually, he didn't do anything wrong. I've always loved Dean, since Woman in White, and I think he's such a beautiful character, so complex and captivating. But Cas stole my heart at the first sight - and he's a very, very interesting character, as well as Dean. Anyone of them who wins I'll be glad, but today my vote is for Cas. I just feel like he deserves more my support right now.

ReplyDeleteThe truth is I think Jensen has done an awesome job with Dean, but I still don't understand Dean a lot of the time. I'm a very independent person and I can't relate to the trouble he has with going against his upbringing and changing. If I voted for Dean, it would be 90% for Jensen and 10% for Dean.
Cas on the other hand, when he rebels, doesn't hold back - so much so that his biggest mistake has been overreaching in trying to make things better. Misha has also done an awesome job with the portrayal with Cas. So I guess what it comes down to is that I'm more invested in Cas's story right now than I am with Dean's.
Why are you assuming that voting for Castiel means people don't love Dean? Dean did not "lose popularity" with me for anything he did. I just prefer Castiel by a little bit. And actually a lot of people have a lot of damn things to say about Castiel and all the things they see wrong with him. No character is safe from criticism in this fandom.

ReplyDeleteI really don't think the "Dean is a main character" argument is so valid. I mean, a main character can be really anoying, and a support one can be very charming. Note that I'm not telling nothing against Dean, I love him and he's a great character. I just don't think that he's good just because he's a main character, as I've read in some comments.

IDK what it is, but I've always loved the support characters even more than the Winchesters (Gabriel, Chuck, Lucifer, Azazel, Ruby, Crowley, Rufus, Jo, Ellen, the list goes on) and Cas will always be number 1 in my heart. <3

ReplyDeleteIt does seem strange to me too. My guess is if this was last year Dean would be winning, but since Misha will not be on as often this year, Castiel gets the protest vote. Not to say that some people don't like Castiel better because I know they do. Also, if this contest was before the last episode it would probably be closer too. Lots of emotions still high over that one.

ReplyDeleteAgreed. I tend to like supporting characters many times over the lead characters. Abby over Gibbs in NCIS. Alexis over Castle in Castle. Hodgins over Bones in Bones. In fact, there are times when Bobby is my favorite character on Supernatural. Still, Supernatural does not exist without the Winchester brothers. If we are talking a character contest, then my vote lies with them. There are few characters on TV that have had so much thrown at them and I continue to watch Supernatural faithfully every week because I am so invested in their brotherhood. There is no contest here for me.

Dean, of course. There was no hesitation for me. Cas is alright, even if he has been getting on my nerves recently, but I'm a Deangirl with a great love for Sam (who I actually chose when he went up against Dean) and in the end it will always be the Winchesters for me. Sorry Cas, but this is Sam and Dean's story.

Well some people still think Cas was wrong for breaking down Sams wall for no reason in rightfully so. So I asked why the Dean injustice at the moment from the voters?

Dean may be the main character and the show may be about him and Sam, but this poll isn't about who is main character and what is best show, so all the arguments saying Sam and Dean are the show so vote for them makes no sense to me. Characters should be judged on their own values not because they are a main character, and personally I find Cas's journey in three seasons and in Season 7 to be more interesting than Dean's in all 7 seasons.

ReplyDeleteI voted for Dean because he is my favorite character on any TV show and I think he is way better than Castiel. I like Castiel but no where near what my feelings for Dean are. I also think people need to stop thinking about what Dean just did as so horrible and using that as an excuse to vote for Castiel. If you want to vote for Cas then do it but dont say its because you are mad at Dean. Be truthful about your reasons. I mean Cas has done some horrible things that everyone seems to have forgotten about but Dean does one recently and he is so bad? I dont get that kind of thinking.
ReplyDeleteDean gets my vote! I am actually shocked to see more people vote for Castiel though. Nothing against Castiel, but I do think a lot of it stems from the fact he won't be in the show as much this season. Just my opinion. As characters however they are the same in a lot of respects. When they screw up they REALLY screw up. When they do good, they remind us all why we can forgive their screw-ups.

I actually haven't even thought about this until now: what was Castiel's reason for breaking Sam's wall? He had spent the entire second half of the season warning Dean about the effects of doing anything to Sam in that condition before and after the soul was replaced, and then he decides that he's going to do something that has been described as a worse punishment than death, just to...what exactly? Hold the Winchesters back? Slow them down? Wouldn't it have been a better idea to poof the brothers to a locked up cell? Maybe throw them down under in Australia? Maybe a room of brick, or even knocked them unconscious like he does randomly to people all the time? It's not like he didn't have the ability to subdue the Winchesters without decimating the last remaining shred of peace Sam had left in his head. He didn't need more than a few hours to do his spell, and it literally took all that Sam and Dean had to find Cas, including the life of Balthazar. I get his reason, I know he wanted to stop Raphael from restarting the apocalypse, but he went about it at least in that respect the worst possible way.

I'll just go with my gut here and say the writers had Cas remove the wall because it would add more to the drama and would affect the story or something. I don't know, but I do know that Dean's killing a monster that had murdered 4 people even if pretty dark and against his brother's will is nothing compared to unleashing the brunt of an entire year spent in the worst possible location in all of creation, while being made the bitch of two pissy angels, all because an angel needed to slow down a couple of hunters. Lord knows his attitude reflected the "more powerful than thou" when he told of Dean.
What pisses me off the most is that he did all this, and now it's Dean that is nothing but a brutal killer who was "out of character" (Which is complete B.S. if you've ever seen him at his darkest and in the middle of his hunts) but no, everyone's all "Cas had a stupid death!" "Cas isn't nearly as bad as Dean"
C'mon guys, all three of these guys have royally screwed up, just because the latest one belongs to Dean doesn't undo everything that's happened in the last 6 seasons...

ReplyDeleteI understand that people may get a lot of flack elsewhere over what character they prefer whether it be Cas or one of the brothers. However, this is SpoilerTV and we try to avoid these things like crazy. Usually SpoilerTV is one of the few places where Supernatural fans of differing opinions can still discuss without it turning into a flame war. I think by bringing in things that happen on other sites, people either are trying to provoke a fight on a peaceful site or unintentionally appear to be doing so. If no one is saying Cas fans are not real fans here, then bringing it up only serves to start something that most of us would rather avoid. When here, it shouldn't matter what someone says out there.

ReplyDeleteI don't see that at all. I see people sharing their opinions on both sides, which is a plus. I see people shocked at the way the vote is going and yes, people disappointed. That always happens. I think people are getting defensive because of things that happen on other sites and that isn't fair to the discussion here. We try to avoid personal attacks and flame wars at SpoilerTV and to act defensively when no one is calling people a lesser fan only discourages conversation and makes other people defensive as well.

It wasn't about eliminating the brothers or getting one or both out of the way. It was about Castiel (having made his case to the Winchesters and asking the boys repeatedly to stay out of it only to be met with more interference) giving in to his decidedly destructive human emotions and getting a little payback.
That is exactly what I thought when I read that!

ReplyDeleteNot that I wouldn't be able to understand that he'd want to get back at them for their continued interference, but I'd probably venture to say that what he did probably crossed the line of all lines.

ReplyDeleteThe more interesting question for me is why did he fight Dean so hard on getting Sam's soul back. If it is that he truly thought it would be worse for Sam, then I'm not sure he knew Sam in the first place. Sam would rather be dead than a hunter with no conscious who kills the innocent like RoboSam. It also makes breaking the wall worse.
ReplyDeleteHowever the other possibility is that he didn't want Sam's soul returned because RoboSam was doing a mighty fine job helping his partnership with Crowley. RoboSam brought in Alphas and Cas had to know that once Sam's soul was returned, he wouldn't be up for that. In this scenario, RoboSam is a business asset while real Sam is another casualty in the Cas-Crowley collusion.
I'm not comparing or judging his actions one way or another (not much anyway). I will say that it was definitely a dick move.

ReplyDeleteEither way paints a grim perspective on Cas' deeds in season 6.
I really hope he gets the chance he needs to redeem himself. And honestly, I doubt it would change Dean's mind at this point (he broke the world, AND his brother all over again...) but perhaps he can somehow make things right with Sam at least? It's strange because the betrayal was mostly focused on Dean and Castiel, but Sam's the one with the "juiced grapefruit."
BTW the only thing that annoys me worse than the overuse of the phrase "meatsuit/meatsack" is various fruits in substitution for the head.
Dean. For me Cas was only ever a slightly amusing secondary character. That's not to say that I don't love the way Misha Collins has acted the role, just that Dean is complex, snarky, and badass and I like him way more than I could ever like Cas
ReplyDeleteI particularly enjoyed Castiel in season 4 when he was in Anna's position and was forced to kill Uriel, his trusted companion. I'd say for me he's more than slightly amusing, but honestly I feel the opposite of most about the lack of Cas this season. He was brilliant in the opener episode and his "God" storyline made way for a much more fun plot with the leviathans, and I don't really need Cas right now for the show to be good. I'm hoping he only comes back when it's absolutely necessary and doesn't overstay his welcome.

ReplyDeleteThank you! I thought I was the only one who has to unclench my teeth every time someone uses the ridiculous "meatsuit". I didn't find it appealing in Devil's Trap and after 6 years it grates more than most things. Call it one of my biggest Supernatural pet peeves.

Actually, I started watching 1-3 before even seeing season 4. I didn't even like Cas for most of season 4, but by the end of the season I just really fell in love with the character/

I know. I know. The show is about Dean and Sam, and I love Dean, but Castiel is probably one of the greatest characters to grace my television screen.
All I know is that I voted for Cas because I love Cas, I have always loved Cas above all others, so the fact that he won't be on the show as much doesn't make a difference in my voting that it would still and always be Cas. His journey in the 3 seasons that he was in is far more interesting in my opinion than any other character's. He went from obedient angel soldier, to one with doubts, to rebellion against Heaven, fighting for free-will, falling from grace, trying to be human, to regaining his powers, to try to teach free will, fighting a civil war, then falling down the road to hell paved with good intentions, made a mess in trying to save the world, and now trying to redeem himself, all of this in one little angel in just over 3 seasons is just so much more interesting to me. And that's why my vote goes with Cas. I love Dean and I love all other characters, but watching Cas's journey as he is trying to learn and make his own decisions is just fascinating, like watching a small child slowly grow up into his or her own person.

ReplyDeleteI've been drinking so my response will probably make barely any sense, but I'll give it a shot, haha.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree that there were much better methods Castiel could have used to slow them down, but I won't let his mistake cloud my love for the character because, for one, the entire 'Castiel is suddenly a traitor' plot line felt entirely forced and poorly fleshed out from the start (kind of like they couldn't think of anything else to do so they decided to make him a villain at the last minute) so I had a hard time buying it, and I'm not too big on being a hypocrite so if I can forgive Sam and Dean for their mistakes, some of which have been far worse in my personal opinion, surely I can forgive him. I see the reasoning behind his actions and I don't think Castiel was in the wrong, but I do think he could have easily zapped them somewhere or put them to sleep instead of what he did.
At the end of the day, a big part of the show is showing how mistakes can be forgiven and people can be redeemed no matter how badly they screw up and that's why I love the show so much.
Obviously not since they've confirmed he's coming back.

ReplyDeleteI don't see why Cas cannot win over Dean. In my opinion, Cas is just as wonderful as Dean, and he deserves to be loved. He is straight forward, honest, brave and consistent... still flawed as well as making mistakes. Then, that just makes me love him more, because after all, he is still brave enough to take responsibilities for what he has done.
ReplyDeleteI totally voted for Cas because I've never been a fan of Dean. I totally see how the show is about Sam and Dean (and I love Sam), but Cas does so much for them. He showed them a real friendship and I feel that he doesn't get the credit he deserves. But Dean just ticks me off sometimes.

ReplyDeleteWell, Cas has made a lot of mistakes, AS MUCH AS Sam & Dean... so what? Human beings are not perfect; and despite the fact Cas is an angle, I think SPN just brings a very interesting and realistic view that no creature on this earth is PERFECT at all.
Actually, Ben Edlund and Eric Kripke have both claimed that Castiel is a "main character", Edlund even calling him "another brother" in the season 6 DVD bonus features. So, you know, considering they're the ones actually behind the show, I think I'm gonna go with what they have to say. :)

Castiel became apart of the family just like Bobby but in the end it is still about Sam and Dean and their journey, not Castiels.

Feel free to point out where I stated that they said the show isn't about the brothers in my response. I said they consider him another main character, which you can easily find the quotes and/or videos on Google if needed, not that he prevented the sole focal point from being on the brothers. Believe it or not, it's possible to be considered another 'main character' without needing to be the center of attention.

As we have seen with many other characters that have come into their lives that they usually end up dead or gone in some way because it is about those 2. The struggles they have faced and overcome. Yes Cas did the same thing and I enjoyed his character and loved Mishas performances but he was essentially just one part of Sam and Deans lives. Once again this is all my opinion and I am not saying people should agree with me. Everyone has their own.

ReplyDeleteWell that can be said from both sides...Everyone though is trying to get other people to vote their way and see it their way. Some may be going about it the wrong way but there are some very passionate people in this fandom and some tend to say things the wrong way.
ReplyDeleteMany people have many reasons for not watching SPN anymore now that Cas isn't there, it doesn't make them any less real fans. I really dislike this idea that just because someone stops watching a show because they feel upset about one character that they aren't a real fan, who died and made anyone God to decide what a real fan even means anyways. And many people aren't upset at Cas's exit as they are upset at HOW he was exited. I don't stop watching a show simply because a character leaves, I watch for the storylines and how a character's exit is written. If I saw the story as illogical and I dislike it and I feel let down because of Cas's rushed exit then I'm not any less of a fan for not wanting to watch the show anymore because I hate the storyline. Just because I came into the show later or that I'm not blindly following the show til the end doesn't make me not a real fan. I watch shows for good storylines, not out of blind loyalty.

ReplyDeleteOnce again, I fail to see why just because this show is Sam and Dean's story that somehow Cas cannot win Best Character. This isn't a competition of who is the more important character or who is the main character, this is simply a character competition with each character judged on their own values. What does it matter that he is supporting? If people love Castiel and want to vote for him, they have every right. There is no rule that said you must vote for the main character of a show. By your own logic, then Sam should have won too because he is also equal main character against Dean but he didn't. So really, Cas deserves to win just as much as Dean.

This is just all kinds of wrong, lol, making us choose between Dean and Cas!! Even though I'm mourning the loss of Cas like almost everyone else, Supernatural is still primarily about Dean and Sam Winchester. Dean is essential to the show in every way therefore he gets my vote.

ReplyDeleteCastiel all the way for me. I loved what he brought to the show and I find that the episodes he's not in are fairly uninteresting to me. I love how clueless he is with human interaction and is one-liners always crack me up. He's done so much for the boys that I can't just overlook. I understand that the show's about Sam and Dean and I respect that, but Castiel is my favorite.
