Here's a fun reference guide for the dinosaurs on FOX's new Terra Nova. I don't know about you but seeing the names with photos always helps me recall them far more easily!

Dinosaur Reference Guide
BRACHIOSAUR
First introduced: Episode 1.01-1.02 - 'Genesis'
Confirmed Human Kills: 0
Genus: *Unlikely Brachiosaurus
Species: Unknown
Size: Species vary. Apprx 50-92ft in length
Description: Brachs is a very large herbivores, long neck and tail.
Notes: The Brachiosaurus lived during the Jurassic period so this may be a different member of the Brachiosauidae family that lived during the Crustacean.
CARNOTAURUS
First introduced: Episode 1.01-1.02 - 'Genesis'
Confirmed Human Kills: 3
Genus: Carnotaurus
Species: Carnotaurus sastrei
Size: Apprx 26ft in length and 9ft in height
Description: Carno has 2 thick "horns" above the eyes and tiny forelimbs.
Notes: Nicknamed a Carno by the pilgrims.
ACCERAPTOR (*Fictional)
First introduced: Episode 1.01-1.02 - 'Genesis'
Confirmed Human Kills: 2
Genus: Acceraptor
Species: Unknown (*Fictional)
Size: Apprx 20ft in length
Description: The Slasher is feathered with a whip-like bladed tail.
Notes: Not actually a Raptor (may be a relative of the Guanlong (see photo)). The Pilgrims nicknamed it "Slasher" which means "slashing thief" in Latin.
PTERANODON
First introduced: Episode 1.01-1.02 - 'Genesis'
Confirmed Human Kills: 0
Genus: Pteranodon
Species: Unkown (Possibly Pteranodon longiceps)
Size: Up to Apprx 20ft wingspan
Description: It is a flying reptile with a large skull crest.
Notes: Pteranodon is one of the largest Pterosaurs and is often confused with the Pterodactyl.
PTEROSAUR
First introduced: Episode 1.03 - 'Instinct'
Confirmed Human Kills: 3 (Dozens injured)
Genus: Pterosauri
Species: Malcolmus pterosaur(Fictional)
Size: Apprx 16-20inches in length, Apprx 2ft wingspan
Description: Malcomus Pterosauri is a small flying reptilesand lives in swarms.
Notes: Has non-annual breeding migrations.
PROCERATOPS
First introduced: Episode 1.03 - “Instinct”
Confirmed Human Kills: 0
Genus: Protoceratops
Species: Unknown
Size: Apprx 6ft in length and 2ft high
Description: It's a small herbivore with a large helmet-like neck frill.
Notes: It's a herd dinosaur and probably nocturnal in nature.
OVOSAUR (*Fictional)
First introduced: Episode 1.04 - “What Remains”

Genus: Ovosaurus
Species: Unknown
Size: Apprx 6-8ft in length
Description: Ovosaurs are feathered with a bulbed tail end.
Notes: They're attracted to nickle and similar in appearance to the Nqwebasaurus (see photo).
NYKORAPTOR (*Fictional)
First introduced: Episode 1.05 - “The Runaway”

Genus: Nykoraptor (*Fictional)
Species: Unknown
Size: Apprx 10-12ft in length
Description: A Nyko is a feathered and sickle-like clawed Raptor with 3 rows of teeth.
Notes: Bears a resemblance to real world Neuquenraptor (see photo).
ANKLYOSAURUS
First introduced: Episode 1.06 - 'Bylaw'

Genus: Ankylosaurus
Species: Ankylosaurus magniventris
Size: 20-30ft in length
Description: Has a massive clubbed tail and thick armored back.
Notes: Largest member of the Ankliosauridae family.
EMPIROSAUR(*Fictional)
First Introduced: Episode 1.07- 'Nightfall'
Confirmed Human Kills: 0
Genus: Spinosaurus
Species: Unknown
Size: Apprx 40-60ft in length
Description: Long crocodile like snout with a large spike sail fin on its back.
Notes: Spinosaurus means "spike lizard". Used by Sixers to Attack Terra Nova. The largest of the carnivorous dinosaur families.
Ancestral Komodo Dragon
First Introduced: Episode 1.08- 'Proof'
Confirmed Human Kills: 0
Genus: Varanus (*modern Komodo genus)
Species: Unknown
Size: Apprx 15ft in length
Description: Very similar to modern Komodo, but with a large retractable neck frill.
Notes: Possibly not a dinosaur, but an ancient Varanid lizard. Very poisonous bite. It prefers carrion and decayed flesh.

ReplyDeleteThis is awesome. Thanks for posting it. I confess that I was never a dinogeek and I didn't like Jurassic Park. I know zip about dinosaurs so it will be nice to have this handy guide. I assume that scientists believe all these dinosaurs actually existed in our world and that they aren't made up by the writers.
ReplyDeleteAll of the dinosaurs we have seen so far existed, but some we will meet are made up actually or expanded sub-species of species that did exist if that makes sense.

ReplyDeleteI added a separate Pterosaur photo since there seems to be a rather large (much larger than a human) flying Pterosaur (Pterodactyl maybe?) and then the smaller swarming Pterosaurs from last night's episode 'Instinct'
ReplyDeleteI changed the previous photo of what I assumed were the Pterosaurs to Pterodactyl (a sub-order of the Pterosaur order). I have no idea what the specific genus species is, but I will update later if they supply the information.
I'd like to say that all these dinosaur names are greek!!! all languages have many greek words!!!

ReplyDeleteWell I have a kill list going under their names, but not a chart. Maybe a demographic of who is killed by what dinosaur? Maybe Carnos have a taste for security forces and Pterosaurs prefer civilians? XD

ReplyDeleteI updated with this weeks new dino and found the specific huge pterosaur was likely a Pteranodon. I also added clickable links to wiki or some informative site for each dinosaur in the list.

I almost want to call it lazy, like instead of doing research they're just inventing new ones to fit whatever plot they contrive. I almost want to do that, but I won't quite just yet.

ReplyDeleteAt first I liked the idea. Different timeline = different species evolving just a bit differently from our own, but as more comes out and perhaps this is in fact our timeline..... The idea of all these new species is not as interesting to me.
Even if we consider that we as historians have missed many species from our past.... It just seems silly to spend time creating species when they can just take from what truly existed.
Part of me wonders if they just cannot capture their appearances well enough to be recognized and decide to "create" a new dinosaur as an after thought....
I'm not buy the different timeline = different species argument (not saying that I think you're arguing it). My understanding was that they went back in time, and their arrival is where the timeline split. They couldn't really go back in time to a different timeline could they? So therefore all the dinosaurs should be the same, but from here-on-out might evolve differently.

Changed Spinosaurus to some fictional Empirosaurus since according to some press piece that's what TN is calling the VERY Spinosaurus looking dinosaur.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting a little annoyed by the shows desire to make up new species of dinosaurs. .... ESPECIALLY when they look exactly like dinosaurs that existed. Oh well.

Although some sizes are approximations by me or other sites based on size comparisons with people on Terra Nova..... and the real world numbers for size may not apply to the specific Terra Nova sepcies either I guess. That said it's still interesting...

For those that have real world counterparts I added photos of dino casts at museums or national parks if I could... if not renderings and sketches. I also added a number of captures from the series of each dinosaur.
Indeed it is interesting! Last night Jurassic Park was on tv,so i tuned in.Its not like i haven't seen it 20 times before,but i wanted to check out the dinosaurs.I must say theirs are much better than T.Nova.I became so engrossed in it i finished watching.Before i realized AMC started Jurassic Park 3,i wasn't tired so what the heck i watched J.P.3. As i finally turned off the tube,i was wondering what you were going to write in your Reference Update.Needless to say i had a good chuckle when i realized you wouldn't be writing about them at all. Anyway i thought you would get a kick out of it. See you later! :)

ReplyDeleteYeah when I have been searching for the Terra Nova dinosaurs from the series I keep seeing the same dinosaurs from Jurassic Park and they are all so much clearer, more detailed, more 3-dimensional - just better.
Granted, those pictures come from DVD captures or maybe Blu-Ray even so they will be better than most TV captures even if 720p resolution... Still.... can;t beat what time and money do for computer VFX and TV shows cannot compete with big movies, even if those movies are 20 years old now!
