-Ratings Breakdown:
Week two of the 2011-12 season kicked-off with the home of Dancing With the Stars, ABC, finishing first in the overnights with an advantage over second-place CBS of 26 percent. Third overall was Fox, which did not impress with the launch of Terra Nova, followed by distant NBC and The CW.
Two and a Half Men on CBS, as expected, lost considerable steam from last Monday’s bloated season-opener. But the long-running sitcom, which has incorporated Ashton Kutcher into the storyline flawlessly, remained the top-rated show of the evening with a 13.3 rating/19 share in the overnights. Comparably, that increased by 45 percent from the year-ago telecast (9.2/13 on 9/27/10), but was down by 29 percent from the inflated week-ago opener (18.7/26 on 9/19/11).
Two and a Half Men led into the season two premiere of sitcom Mike & Molly (#2: 8.8/13 at 9:30 p.m.), followed by Hawaii Five-O at a second-place 7.3/12 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Although Mike & Molly, featuring Emmy winner Melissa McCarthy, built by its year-ago telecast (7.4/11 on 9/27/10) by 19 percent, the retention out of Two and a Half Men was soft at 66 percent.
In time period-premiere news, episode two of CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls moved into the 8:30 p.m. half-hour with a very solid (and second-place) 7.9/11. Comparably, that built by 18 percent from lead-in How I Met Your Mother (#2: 6.7/10 at 8 p.m.), which finished 16 percent above one year earlier, and it bested year-ago occupant Rules of Engagement (5.1/ 7 on 9/27/10) by 55 percent. Get used to these 2 Broke Girls…they are here to stay.
In series-premiere news, a two-hour edition of Fox’s Terra Nova got sampled with a 6.4/ 9 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. and consistency in each of the four half-hours as follows:
Terra Nova (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 6.4/10 (#3)
8:30 p.m.: 6.4/ 9 (#3)
9:00 p.m.: 6.4/ 9 (#3)
9:30 p.m.: 6.3/ 9 (#3)
Comparably, the first half of Terra Nova trailed year-ago 8 p.m. Fox occupant House (7.0/10 on 9/27/10) by nine percent. But it built from former short-lived 9 p.m. occupant Lone Star (2.5/ 4 on 9/27/10) by 156 percent. Given the hype and high expectations, however, consider this a disappointing launch for Terra Nova, which sounds more like a short-term arrival than a long-running series.
The other series-premiere last night was quirky CW drama Hart of Dixie, which finished a distant No. 5 at 9 p.m. with a 1.7/ 2 in the overnights. While this is nothing to boast about, Hart of Dixie did build from the season-premiere of lead-in Gossip Girl (#5: 1.3/ 2 at 8 p.m.) by 31 percent. And it outdelivered the year-ago occupant, also Gossip Girl (1.5/ 2 on 9/27/10), by 13 percent
If Hart of Dixie and Terra Nova lose the usual steam in weeks two and three, both face an uphill battle.
Over at ABC, Dancing With the Stars remains the dominant force overall from 8-10 p.m., with an 11.9/18 in the overnights. But compared to one year earlier (14.9/22 on 9/27/10), that was a loss of a noticeable 20 percent. Here is the half-hour breakdown:
Dancing With the Stars (ABC)
8:00 p.m.: 11.7/18 (#1)
8:30 p.m.: 12.1/18 (#1)
9:00 p.m.: 11.8/17 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 12.2/18 (#1)
Based on performance, Chaz Bono should be the one exiting tonight. My pick to depart, however, is Elisabetta Canalis.
Dancing With the Stars led into Castle, which won the 10 p.m. hour in the overnights with an 8.2/14. Comparably, retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Dancing With the Stars was 67 percent.
With all the original competition in place, there was very little audience left for NBC. The Sing-Off, which was better off as a December attraction, dipped to a mere 2.9/ 4 in the overnights from 8-10 p.m. Comparably, that trailed year-ago occupants Chuck (3.6/ 5 on 9/27/10) and The Event (6.3/ 9 on 9/27/10), on average, by a hefty 27 percent. Here is the dismal half-hour breakdown:
The Sing-Off (NBC)
8:00 p.m.: 3.2/ 5 (#4)
8:30 p.m.: 3.1/ 4 (#4)
9:00 p.m.: 2.6/ 4 (#4)
9:30 p.m.: 2.7/ 4 (#4)
Leading out of The Sing-Off was week two of The Playboy Club at a last-place 3.3/ 5 at 10 p.m. Comparably, that was a loss of 15 percent from its already lackluster debut (3.9/ 6 on 9/19/11). And it dipped from failed year-ago occupant Chase (4.1/ 6 on 9/27/10) by 20 percent. Tick, tick…the cancellation clock is ticking.

Ouch for Tera Nova. 18-49 demo better kick ass. I can't imagine anything under a 4.0 being acceptable for Fox with the incredible price tag of Terra Nova!.
ReplyDeleteI don't see Terra Nova numbers going up after that pilot either. Ouch!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure 6 million or so viewers is enough to justify one of the most expensive series to produce....
Wow those are bad numbers for Playboy Club! Worse than Chase? Ouch!
ReplyDeletePoor Terra Nova...
ReplyDeleteI thought there were a lot of interesting possible plot lines...that whole idea that we can't trust anyone from 'the future', when supposably everyone is from there...or are they...and is the time travel really a one way ticket--and is it only a one 'time period' time travel?!
I am going to hold out for a bit, even if it's just for O'Mara's sake!
I like Jason O'mara quite a bit, but O'Mara is turning into a jinx I swear.
ReplyDeleteHe joins The Agency and it's cancelled, In Justice got cancelled before a back 9, Life on Mars was cancelled before a full order, and now Terra Nova.
Wow, I was honestly hoping that Terra Nova did MUCH better than that because if not it could cripple FOX's tendency to try new things that take money and effort as opposed to another procedural...
ReplyDelete:(
Thanks for the rating
ReplyDeleteI really liked Terra Nova. Hope it gets the ratings it deserves
ReplyDeleteGossip Girl performed ok for The CW. I know the numbers are not great but I understand that it does much better in it's Target Demo 18-34 where it ranked 2nd last season. Noted it is currently NO 1 on Itune's download chart!
ReplyDeleteI dont get the people in The US...Watching some, so called, stars dancing or sitcoms that are gonna be broadcasted for the next decade...Terra Nova was really good. It's probably gonna be another science-fiction series cancelled after one season. People love series about doctors having love problems, some housewives, that were interesting but are not anymore, some series about police or investigation...Why is it so hard for science-fiction series to gain bigger audience?
ReplyDeleteOuch for Terra Nova
ReplyDeleteI liked Terra Nova, and hope it does pick up steam, but hey if it fails then Fox always has Fringe to look to again. Maybe that is a message to them, stop cancelling (or threatening cancellation of...) good shows for what you think is potentially better, just because Steven Spielberg's name is attached to it. But again I liked Terra Nova not saying it was bad just not good enough to warrant the thought of cancelling Fringe over it due to budgetary concerns. I guess what I'm trying to say here is I'll be pissed if Terra Nova gets picked up for another season and Fringe gets cancelled, based on the pilot only. We'll have to see how the season pans out to really know if this is cheese or cheese whiz.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree.
ReplyDeleteI think Terra Nova has potential, but the cost is very high per episode and the pay off may not be as much as the pay off per episode of Fringe.
Plus I already know what I'm getting with Fringe having 3 seasons under its belt. I'm getting Cheese - a fine aged Gouda at that!
If it comes down to one or the other..... I lean towards Fringe too.
Wow, my dislike of 2.5 Men aside, I'm really pleased for HIMYM and 2 Broke Girls. 18-49 demo ratings over 4.0? Maybe I'm just used to the numbers from the end of last season, but that's really strong stuff.
ReplyDeleteWHY ARE YOUR AMERICAN TV VIEWING FIGURES FOR GG SO LOW? I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW IT CAN BE NO1 ON ITUNES NOW, COME OUT RANKING 2ND OVERALL LAST YEAR IN THE TARGET DEMO? BUT STILL ONLY GET 1.55 MILLION???
ReplyDeleteIT JUST DOESN'T MAKE SENSE??? DO THE YOUNGER PEOPLE WATCH ONLINE?
The US really loves CBS doesn't it? I don't get it. I feel bad for Terra Nova but not surprised, its hard for genre shows to make it these days
ReplyDeleteThere is a large population of online viewers for GG. It is also one of the most pirated shows on TV. Then you have all the DVR viewing that occurs. Online + pirated viewing do not add anything to ratings. DVR viewing is accounted for if viewed within 7 days of recording.
ReplyDeletethey said that about christian slater and nathan fillion to before and they all got thie big breaks (i wouldnt say christian getting breaking in renewed is a big break but u get the jist). Hopefully terra nova is jason o mara's i think he's a good actor and he reminds me a lot of hugh jackman. He's tv's own hugh jackman!
ReplyDeletechill dude and everyone else!! This was just the pilot!!! Im so sick of people complaingin and saying the show will be cancelled after only the pilot!!!! Geez what bs!!!! I remember when smallville aired its season 9 premiere with the rating and viewer decrease everyone for sure thought it would be the last season and get cancelled but they were wrong, it got renewed for a final season of 10! SO EVERYONE STOP COMPLAINING AND WAIT TILL AT LEAST HALF OF THE ORDERED SEASON OF EVERY SHOW TO MAKE PREDICTIONS LIKE THAT! Even wating for 3 episodes to air is better then predicting after only the pilot or season premiere! I can give more examples of shows if i have to like castle, stargate, etc.
ReplyDeleteI much enjoyed Terra Nova. Again the first hour was a drag because they have to give all the back history but it moved into the second hour really well and it was gripping.. I look for good things to come from this show... at least I hope so.
ReplyDeleteWow misread much!?
ReplyDeleteI think it's you who needs to chill I didn't say it was gonna get cancelled, but from FOX's track record of over doing it in the pilot season with big budget shows, well cancellation isn't a big stretch of the imagination. I certainly like the show and don't want to see it get canned, but if FOX gets in a position to where they have to pick a big budget show to keep or cancel, then I hope it's Terra Nova that gets canned and not Fringe. But in a perfect world both shows would achieve success.
Mike & Molly is huge *-* i love this show. Terra Nova deserves more than this numbers.
ReplyDeleteCastle is doing great! yay
ReplyDeletenice to see how i met your mother keeping steady and two and a half men is still killing without Sheen
ReplyDeleteThe crappy performance of Gossip Girl could have sealed the fate of Hart of Dixie after just one episode. What awful numbers for a lead-in.
ReplyDeleteHow is Castle losing to Hawaii Five-O every week? We Castle fans need to step it up.
ReplyDeleteOMG I thought Terra Nova would've got more viewers. Five-0 got 2mill more than Terra Nova is that right or am I wrong. And looks like Five-0 is getting much closer to Castle in the ratings. Looks like more people tuned in Monday night after what happened last week after rave reviews
ReplyDeleteYep, Terra Nova numbers must be very disappointing for Fox.
ReplyDeleteFYI: Hawaii Five-0 numbers actually dropped.
Episode 2.01 : 12.57 Million
Episode 2.02 : 11.39 Million
We'll be posting a full ratings table in about a week that will have all the ratings for all the shows in one table.
but considering FOX as a whole averages 3.39 thats not much lower and puts it an index of 0.91 i dont see how its a disappointment i say a 3.1 is pretty good as long as it doesnt drop too much
ReplyDeleteit sure sounds like replacing charlie sheen with ashton kutcher was a brilliant move for CBS ratings wise
ReplyDeleteThey spent 25 Million on the Pilot plus a load on advertising. They needed/wanted at least a 4.
ReplyDeleteTrust me Fox are very worried about the low rating for the Premiere.
wow thats terrible for Gossip Girl that blows i actuaaly really liked the premiere especially the 2nd half i am almost 100% Certain it will be cancelled by may 2012 CW has averages 0.9% A18-49 Demo and Gossip Girl premiered with 0.7% Demo that puts it at 0.78 Index which is low and not good for the show which is too bad cause i wanted it to go for 6 seasons when E Westwicks and Leighton meesters Contract Expires and i want my Chair endgame but if it ends with season 5 Dair will probaly be endgame
ReplyDeleteyeah but not even house gets a 4.0 in every episode so i dont see how FOX is surprised it didnt do that i knew it wouldnt do that high i think thats one of the mjor problems with ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX is they have too high of expectations for new shows and why alot of them get cancelled
ReplyDeleteyeah but for its 2nd year i would still say thats quite good for Hawaii Five-0 in the A18-49 demo
ReplyDeleteYep, didn't say they weren't :)
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about Two And A Half Men, It's a half-hour sit-com isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI have never seen it as i live abroad, but is it so wonderfully written and acted that it deserves such high ratings or is there something unique about it that it attracts so many viewers?
I'm sure to catch alot of flak for saying this, but the show didn't really suffer from losing Charlie. My favorites on the show has always been Alan and Bertha, and they are still just as great.
