-Ratings Breakdown:
CBS kicked-off this first Thursday of the 2011-12 season on a winning overnight note, beating second-place Fox by six-tenths of a rating point. But either ABC, which featured the series-premiere of Charlie’s Angels and two-hours of Grey’s Anatomy, and Fox, which housed another two-hours of The X Factor, are poised for victory among adults 18-49. Third overall in the overnights was ABC, followed by NBC and The CW.

There were four series premieres last night: aforementioned Charlie’s Angels on ABC, crime solver Person of Interest on CBS, and NBC’s combination of sitcom Whitney and crime related Prime Suspect from 9:30-11 p.m.

At 8 p.m., two episodes of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory, featuring Emmy winner Jim Parsons, won the hour with an average 9.6 rating/16 share. One year earlier, The Big Bang Theory opened with a similar 9.2/15 on 9/23/10. Next was the first half of a two-hour edition of The X Factor on Fox at an 8.1/14, which was 19 percent above year-ago occupant Bones (6.5/11 on 9/23/10). The X Factor’s advantage among adults 18-49 (and other young demos) will, no doubt, be greater, but this is not the breakout hit many were expecting.

Over at ABC was the revival of Charlie’s Angels, which debuted with a 6.1/10 in the overnights -- 56 percent above failed year-ago drama My Generation (3.9/ 6 on 9/23/10). Consider this is a good start for Charlie’s Angels, but will it hold up next week? Given the mundane pilot, anticipate double-digit losses.

Rounding off the 8 p.m. hour were the season premieres of low-rated NBC comedies Community (#4: 2.8/ 5) and Parks and Recreation (#4: 3.0/ 5), and The Vampire Diaries on The CW (#5: 2.2/ 3). Compared to its year-ago opener (3.6/ 6 on 9/23/10), Community dipped by 22 percent. Needless to say, NBC made a mistake keeping Community as the Thursday anchor. This is no way to start an evening.

At 9 p.m., top-rated overnight honors went to the series-premiere of drama Person of Interest on CBS, which scored an 8.6/13 (and held 90 percent of lead-in The Big Bang Theory). Compared to CSI on the year-ago evening (9.6/15 on 9/23/10), that was a loss of 10 percent. Next was the second half of The X Factor on Fox, which averaged an 8.5/13 and performed as follows in the four half-hours:

The X Factor (Fox)
8:00 p.m.: 7.4/12 (#2)
8:30 p.m.: 8.8/14 (#2)
9:00 p.m.: 8.2/12 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 8.8/13 (#1)

Overall, the 8.3/13 for The X Factor from 8-10 p.m. outdelivered year-ago occupants Bones and Fringe by 57 percent. Again, as good as this is, The X Factor could have been stronger given the hype and expectations.

Over at ABC, the first hour of the two-hour Grey’s Anatomy season-premiere was on the map with a 7.7/12. But compared to the year-ago season-opener (10.0/15 on 9/23/10), that was a loss of 23 percent.
NBC’s Steve Carell-less The Office picked up steam, rising a hefty 80 percent from Parks and Recreation with a fourth-place 5.4/ 8 at 9 p.m. Comparably, that was right on par with the 5.6/ 9 from one year earlier. Given the expected solid demographic results, consider The Office a “winner.”

At 9:30 p.m. on NBC was the series-premiere of the dreadful sitcom Whitney at a very respectable 5.0/ 8. Comparably, that held 93 percent of The Office lead-in and is also expected to resonate among adults 18-49.

Capping off the 9 p.m. hour was week two of drama The Secret Circle on The CW at a 1.9/ 3 in the overnights. Compared to its week-ago debut (2.3/ 4 on 9/14/11), that was a loss of 17 percent. One year earlier, former occupant Nikita averaged a 2.1/ 3 on 9/23/10.

CBS remained in the overnight winner’s circle at 10 p.m. thanks to the season-premiere of The Mentalist, which scored an 8.6/15. But one year-earlier, The Mentalist was stronger at a 10.2/17 (on 9/23/10). Second was the concluding half of the two-hour edition of Grey’s Anatomy on ABC (7.8/13), followed by the series-premiere of Prime Suspect on NBC (4.6/ 8). While Prime Suspect is expected to skew older, comparably this was 44 percent above year-ago occupant The Apprentice in the overnights (3.2/ 5 on 9/23/10).

In a nutshell, the positive news last night was all four series debuts getting sampled. But since most debuts drop in the vicinity of 10-20 percent in week two, don’t be fooled. We’ll see what happens next week…and beyond.

  1. i hate living in a world where Charlie's Angels and Whiney are successes

  2. They won't be next week. I bet there will be a massive drop off next week.

  3. No!!! I now fear a bit for Community! Don't want this awesome show to get cancelled!

  4. And POI was CBS's weakest show of the night but it could end up being more young skewing and make up in demos

    ReplyDelete
  5. Isn't 8.6/13 bigger than 8.6/15?
I'd think the Mentalist (In these ratings, we'll have to see the actual 18-49s later) was actually lower...

  6. It's a secret. :P The ratings are hidden from us!

  7. I really hope you are right. It is so not fair for Community and P&R... Whitney is trash and so is Charlie's Angels.

Things are looking bad for NBC. Perhaps people just forgot they exist? They should buy ad spots during Two and a Half Men to remind viewers that NBC still exists, haha.

I really like TBBT, but double the ratings that The Office had?

On the other hand, I am glad that Person of Interest did well.

And is it just me or the X-Factor's ratings are good yet very disappointing considering the hype around it?

  8. . For example, Nielsen may report a show as receiving a 9.2/15 during
its broadcast, meaning that on average 9.2 percent of all
television-equipped households were tuned in to that program at any
given moment, while 15 percent of households watching TV were tuned
into that program during this time slot. The difference between rating
and share is that a rating reflects the percentage of the total
population of televisions tuned to a particular program while share
reflects the percentage of televisions actually in use

  9. Thank you for the explanation.

  10. I am not a Nielsen user. I think Charlie's Angels was a definite hit if Facebook responses are any indication.

    ReplyDelete
  11. That clears it up I suppose. I've never been good with the HH ratings. That why I tend to avoid them and just wait for the 18-49s lol...But I HAD to see how POI did versus the other shows.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Why? Did facebook users like it? (I'm not on facebook, that's why I had to ask).

    ReplyDelete
  13. ABC promotes their shows on Facebook and Twitter like any network. It's been going on for a while. I don't know how much promos is there. But the feedback from last night has been generally positive. Most of the viewers like the fresh take.

  14. Whitney needs to be cancelled so Parks and Rec can be back on after The Office and Community can be pushed into the 8:30 slot so it cans top competing with TBBT!

    ReplyDelete
  15. this reflect my interest in both shows. Unforgettable was far superior to POI

  16. If you think online buzz is more important than ratings, then that means CA doesn't stand a chance: http://smallscreenscoop.com/whoa-chuck-supernatural-and-fringe-prove-to-have-more-fall-tv-buzz-than-glee-the-playboy-club-charlies-angels/317265/

  17. demos are in Prime Suspect and Charlie's Angels actually didnt do so good after all

Person of Interest did just "ok "
SS is down to 0.9 i slightly like SS but i love Ringer

    ReplyDelete
  18. POI did great!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! watch Community people!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. why is there so much hate towards Whitney! haha
    Charlies Angels was bad though!

    ReplyDelete
  20. and POI dropped to 2.9 in second half hour while charlie's angels increased! to 2.2

    ReplyDelete
  21. Community and Parks ratings are so unfair... TBBT sucks

    ReplyDelete
  22. Unforgettable will drop more than Person of Interest next week I'm thinking. Be interesting to see....

    ReplyDelete
  23. Considering its competition Person of Interest did very well I think. how much of that audience will return next week though is the question!

Prime Suspect .... not so much....
I have not watched it  yet (I will in a few hours), but 6 million on a premiere night is pretty bad for a drama. Then again it is NBC so I guess maybe they will be calling it their new hit of the season....

    ReplyDelete
  24. How is Charlie's Angels a success? Those numbers are pretty underwhelming. Only 8mil for a premiere and 2.1 in the Demo? Even with a small dropoff, that's not particularly good. Better than last year's new shows but still quite weak.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Poor NBC, nothing seems to go well for them this season.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Is it me or is the ratings for TVD getting lower? I cringed when I saw the 1.2 that's pretty bad isn't it? I'm getting worried.

    ReplyDelete
  27. :) I'm so happy to see the bad scores of TVD and Secret circle. So tired of those Twilight chicks and the 2000 twilight-wannabe shows, the end is getting closer!

    ReplyDelete
  28. So upset about Community and Parks and Rec, esp Parks which had been doing so well last season

    ReplyDelete
  29. I doubt CW would cancel it, it still does well enough for them

    ReplyDelete
  30. Same as last season, I do feel bad for them its fair enough when bad shows fail but Parks and Community are great and deserve better ratings

    ReplyDelete
  31. 0,o why was my comment deleted?? Amy is saying that Whitney need to be cancel, another talk about how TBBT sucks and it's ok but to say that the vampires deserved low ratings is totally against the rules? 0.o

    ReplyDelete
  32. We really need to find a new way to measure ratings, or hopefully NBC will know the loyal fan base of Community and keep it around for a 4th and final year like they did for Chuck's 5th season.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm sad for Community :( it was a great episode

    ReplyDelete
  34. A 2.1 demo rating for a Thursday night premiere of a big-budget action series is not a success, and it will be much worse next week, like DarkUFO mentioned.

    I'm predicting a 1.8 & 5.2 million for Charlie's Angels next week.

    ReplyDelete
  35. No. Keep Community where it is. I think the reason it stays on the air is that NBC knows that Community has a very loyal (though small) audience and that anything show competing against TBBT, X-Factor/Idol, Football will get destroyed. But if they put it up against lesser competition, than it has no reason for it only getting a 1.7. Leave community where it is, as its tiff competition might actually lead to a renewal

    ReplyDelete
  36. Whitney needs to be cancelled so Prime Suspect can actually get a half decent lead-in, and not be preceded by the worst sitcom in the history of man.

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's pretty good.  Of course, it's also thrown up against 4th season veteran and critical darling "The Mentalist" on CBS and unbelievably awful guilty pleasure "Grey's Anatomy" on ABC, and it's lead-in is another freshman series which kind of sucks.  NBC  should cancel "The Playboy Club" and move "Prime Suspect" to a more amenable timslot.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Of course, I dvred POI.  Had to watch my Vampire Diaries.  I liked POI.  My only issue was couldn't they hire some one else like Jack from Lost, Sawyer from Lost, or Desmond from Lost.  So many different actors to choose from that would be more of an audience generated actor than just relying on Ben.  I have nothing against John Reese but he just didn't do it for me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Okay, Whitney needs to be moved, as a lead in to Prime Suspect it's just wrong, equally as a lead out of the Office, it's wrong, put Parks after the Office, that will at least solve one of those problems, then move Free Agents and Up All night to 10:30 and 10 respectively, and then find Prime Suspect a better lead in, possibly paired with Harry's Law.
There NBC, hire me next season, I'm better than who you have now.

  40. I really have no clue why H8r and Top model are on Wednesday, while Nikita & Supernatural are on Friday. I think most would agree if Nikita and SPN were put on Wednesday they would probably increase at the very least alittle bit. Enough were they might be able to pull in a 1.0-1.2. More people are watching TV on Wednesday than Friday.

Can't wait to see the Live+7 for the the CW last night.
