CBS Wins; Respectable Sampling for Ringer Debut on The CW
Tuesday 9/13/11
Household
Rating/Share
CBS 6.0/10
ABC 5.7/ 9
NBC 5.4/ 9
CW 2.0/ 3
Fox 1.9/ 3
-Percent Change from the Year-Ago Evening (Tuesday 9/14/10):
ABC: +58, CW: +43, CBS: +28, NBC: -17, Fox: -41
----------
-Winners:
NCIS R (CBS), America’s Got Talent (NBC), ABC News: Jacqueline Kennedy: In Her Own Words (ABC), Ringer (CW)
-Losers (excluding repeats):
It’s Worth What? (NBC), 90210 (CW), Parenthood (NBC)
----------
-Ratings Breakdown:
A night of repeats led CBS to overnight Tuesday victory, but it will not be good enough to win the evening among adults 18-49, which should fall in NBC’s corner. Second overall in the metered markets was ABC, which trailed CBS by just five percent, followed by NBC, The CW and an all encore night on Fox.
In series-premiere news, Sarah Michelle Gellar drama Ringer on The CW was clearly sampled with a 2.5 rating/4 share at 9 p.m. Comparably, that built by 60 percent from the season-premiere of 90210 (#5: 2.5/ 4 at 8 p.m.). It finished fourth in the time period (67 percent above two repeat episodes of Raising Hope on Fox – avg. 1.5/ 2 at 9 p.m.). And it more than doubled the overnight performance of year-ago occupant Life Unexpected (1.2/ 2 on 9/14/10). Another positive worth noting was overnight growth in the second half-hour of four percent (2.4/ 4 to 2.5/ 4). Keeping in mind that Ringer faced America’s Got Talent on NBC (#1 for the evening: 8.8/14), consider this a “winning” start for Ringer.
90210, unfortunately, dipped by 12 percent from the season-premiere of year-ago time period occupant One Tree Hill (1.7/ 3 on 9/14/10), which will be back for its final 13 episodes in midseason.
In season-premiere news, family drama Parenthood on NBC finished third at 10 p.m., with a disappointing 4.6/ 8 in the overnights at 10 p.m. Comparably, that dipped by 18 percent from the year-ago second-season opener (5.6/10 on 9/14/10). Although Parenthood is unlikely to rank last in the hour among adults 18-49, overnight retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of America’s Got Talent (8.8/14) was just 52 percent. Considering Parenthood faced a repeat of NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS (#3: 5.6/ 9), the competitive stakes will be higher next week when all the programming is original.
Earlier in the evening on NBC was the season (or series) finale of game show It’s Worth What? at a third place 3.2/ 5 at 8 p.m.
In the specials department, ABC News: Jacqueline Kennedy: In Her Own Words was on the map with a solid 6.6/11 in the overnights from 9-11 p.m., and the half-hour breakdown as follows:
ABC News: Jacqueline Kennedy: In Her Own Words
9:00 p.m.: 6.2/10 (#2)
9:30 p.m.: 6.5/10 (#2)
10:00 p.m.: 6.9/11 (#1)
10:30 p.m.: 6.7/12 (#1)
Growth out of Wipeout at 8 p.m. (#2: 3.9/ 7) was a significant 69 percent.
Elsewhere, aforementioned CBS filled the evening with repeats of NCIS (#1: 6.8/12) and two episodes of spin-off NCIS: Los Angeles (9 p.m.: #3: 5.6/ 9; 10 p.m.: #2: 5.6/10). And Fox opened with a repeat of Glee (#4: 2.3/ 4), which never plays well in non-originals.
Next Tuesday will feature the series premieres of drama Unforgettable on CBS and sitcom New Girl on Fox; and the season-opening episodes of Body of Proof (ABC), NCIS (CBS), NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS), The Biggest Loser (NBC), Glee (Fox) and Raising Hope (ABC). The start of the new TV season is now just five days away!

Glad to hear Ringer did okay. I definitely enjoyed the show!
ReplyDeleteBe interesting to see next weeks numbers when there is more competition as well as to see how many people return to see the 2nd episode.
ReplyDeleteI sincerely hope it does well. Sarah managed to give both characters depth.
ReplyDeletei loved it but we still need to wait for the demos old skewing on the CW is not good and i have a feeling Ringer might skew older
ReplyDeleteWhile this is positive, 18-49 is what really matters.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear that Ringer did fine. Didn't get to watch it yet. But, DVRed it so will be watching it soon. Next week will be the true count. Hope Sarah is still in the running.
ReplyDelete:D Go ringer go HAHA! and :( sad a bout parenthood
ReplyDeleteI think Ringer got 1.2 A18-49
ReplyDeleteExactly. Ringer got a 1.2. This is not good.
ReplyDeleteA 1.2 is not good for a series premier even for the CW, history suggests there will be a drop off in the second episode I would say about 0.2. If it holds on to a 1.0 average for the first half of the season at least it'll have a good chance of being renewed.
ReplyDeleteThis does not bode well for the CW'd other shows
Parethood did well, had it been up against origonals from CBS and ABC I would wager it would have been close but Parenthood may have edged the hour.
ReplyDeleteNo suprises with 90210 pretty much doing what we all expected I think? It'll drop off to 0.6's again as the season goes on and to belo 1.5 million viewers but it is in no danger of not making it to the end of the season. I dont think it'll be back for another.
ReplyDeleteHey, Marlene, TVmonkey, don't be sad for Ringer's ratings on the 18-49 demo. There is plenty to be glad about.
ReplyDelete- 2.72 million viewers watched the first half hour and 2.76 million watched the second half : Ringer didn't lose any viewers, it even gained vievers in front of the final half hour of the season finale of America's Got Talent.
- 90210 started extremely poorly with 1.63 million viewers, with 0.8% of the 18-49 demo in a much more teen-oriented series. In my opinion, the show will be cancelled at the end of the season, it already was a miracle it got renewed last Spring.
- And I have the feeling that Hart of Dixie (in 90210's previous time slot) won't last, so Ringer could have a pass even though it's not a massive hit on the key demo : the CW bosses said they want to expand their shows to a broader audience, so if they have a more mature show with a TV/WB icon (SMG) which gets great reviews, they won't cancel it, pretty much the same thing happened with Nikita last season (which was not a success on the 18-49 demo either).
Not really related to any of these ratings, but I just read Daniel Feinberg's review of H8r (http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/the-fien-print/posts/tv-review-the-cws-h8r), premiering tomorrow at 8pm on the CW. I didn't actually take interest in knowing what this reality show would be about until today. Now I know. Oh. My. God. What a pile of crap. CW, you're reached the end of the tunnel and you keep digging lower. I hope that this was greenlighted by Dawn Ostroff, who's now gone of the CW, and that the new boss (who greenlighted a pilot not picked up for series by CBS (Ringer), the smartest move of the year) had no involvment in any of this and could not prevent its airing.
the ratings for Ringer look great :)
ReplyDeleteGlad for the good Ringer start. Hopefully it can keep something like this up...
ReplyDelete"I read some place else that 2.72 million viewers watched the first half
ReplyDeletehour and 2.76 million watched the second half : Ringer didn't lose any
viewers, it even gained vievers in front of the final half hour of the
season finale of America's Got Talent ! That is quite impressive,
especially for a CW pilot."
If the numbers don't rise in the demo thisi is useless. Total numbers don't count.
"Ringer could have a pass even though it's not a massive hit on the key demo"
True. It depends on how the other shows will perform. It would be unfair to say Ringer will be cancelled. We just have to wait and see it it can hold the audiece it has. If it manages to stay constantly over 1.0 it is a sure pass. A 1.2 is just not the best starting point.
The 90210 ratings are awful so I'm thankful they didn't kill Ringer with its 1.2, but it needs to maintain that rating to be in the positive for the rest of the season. I believe a lot of CW shows started higher than a 1.2 and ended on really low ratings. Hopefully Ringer will knock that trend and possibly maintain its ratings.
ReplyDeleteSo happy about Ringer! Now if everyone returns for the second episode then CW has a hit!
ReplyDeleteIt is unbelievable to me that NCIS & NCIS LA can still get between 8-10 mil. viewers for a repeat.
