Only 2 mintues in and already a flaw that could have been avoided easily.
Everyone wears re-breathers even in the hallway and only takes them off when inside the apartment. The police ask the family to go outside so that they can search the apartment and the family does not take their re-breathers with. What parent wouldn't make their kids wear them? Lame.
For a man that was coughing consistantly, Jim sure got quiet and lost his cough quickly when they needed a dramatic moment as he unwrapped the contraband his wife gave him.
Another terrible music score trying to correct for an underwhelming scene. Ugh!
What self respecting security force's idea of "checking a pack for weapons" is to grab a knife and poke in when there is zipper that can open it? Wow that was a very forced "Oh my god - My baby!" moment if I ever saw one. Another ridiculous element added to heighten the intensity, but it just ruined it for me.And then why do the security forces wear football padding over their Camo? Are they part of some sports team? Kinda ridiculous to just make something look different without a reason.
If one travels millions of years into the past, they would be standing around and arguing about the future... not the past....
I guess it would be wrong to change our history forever, but it is completely ok to change a different timeline since it won't mess up the our personal future. The future where we as a species made the world almost uninhabitible.
If you're not smart enough to figure out what "OTG" means you should not being going OTG in the first place.
The dinosuar VFX are okay at best, but since this is the pilot and they are such a large part of the seires they needed to be great to sell it. When they interact with other elements they are TERRIBLE. To see the dino grab the "6" out of his gunnery position was just cringe-worthy. When it attacked the armored rover it was even worse!
The audio mix was terrible too. At times things that should be in the foreground would drop into the background and it would sound muffled. Other times ithe dialog went in and out of foreground. Maybe that was the boradcast in my area only? If not heir audio people should be fired... or were

Like McDonald's I'm lovin' it! I love the whole us versus them with the sixers. The dinosaurs are incredible, the characters have great potential, and I like the mysteries of the hieroglyphs and the missing son, all in all a great pilot, now let's see if the show itself hold up to the pilot.
Ha! Well I did like a few of the characters even if they were stereotyped. I love the overall premise and the final scene with the strobe grenades ans the infra-red glasses was pretty damn cool. If the series can capture everything that came together in the last scene it can improve immediately.
It was only okay for me. Didnt like the first hour at all, kinda enjoyed the second since we got some action. Def gonna watch it all at once during summer but nay, not westing my time with this, to many show this one aint awesome enough
I've got about 15 minutes left, but so far I've enjoyed it much more than I expected. Obviously there's faults, and it's not really that original, but I enjoyed the scenes with the 'slashers.' The far-away views of terra nova were very pretty. It's way over-dramatic, but kinda fun, and the sets are great.
I really REALLY don't want to see anymore oversized bugs. I don't think I can take any of that. O.o
it was pretty good, the first half was very confusing thou.. I wish they did the set up to get into Terra Nova a little better but after a while I understood what was going on. I will tune in next week.
Great pilot. It delivered for me in the spectacle I was looking for. It definitely wasn't perfect as I felt the family dynamics were overplayed on the heavy side, especially with the "angry teen son rebellion" part (yawn), but realize that they felt they needed to add some tension. I really like Stephen Lang's performance, and the introduction to some mythology that all may not be as it seems with the sixers, and the glyphs. Nice special efx without going overboard and hopefully keeping the budget in check. Count me in.
I for one loved it. It wasn't perfect but no show is and the only thing I didn't really like about it was the annoying son but if he keeps up his antics pretty soon a dino will have him for lunch anyway XD...
Wow too many nay sayers. I went in not expecting much which is exactly what I got. I will watch it though because I do love the whole idea and concept of the show. Hopefully it will get better and better.
Hopefully the family is played down as it progresses and the conspiracy is played up.
I think that's the trick - walking that line. Is it a family series like Land of the Lost on steroids, or is it a conspiracy adventure series set 85 million years in the past? It is a fine line and walking too much over either side loses some viewers.
I didn't see the show so I cannot praise or criticise it. I can say however that it would be my kind of show-------------time travel and Dinosaurs----------what more could you ask for!
I have seen Primeval, though, made be by a UK network and I love that.
The only little bit of criticism I am going to allow myself is the following, basing it on the comments of other posters.
American shows in general always tend to bring in a family-type situation with the younger teen problem and other sentimental aspects. There's nothing wrong with that, I suppose, but sometimes that aspect becomes too sappy and takes over the whole show, while the adventurous/danger/thriller part of the story gets neglected.
I've seen it happen various times where a show starts off great and then just peters out due to too much
"family time."
I don't know if anyone has seen Primeval but there's no "family aspect" to it and that keeps it taut and tense.
Another show I liked better than I expected. The whole 'build a better world' scenario is generally kind of dopey. A lot about the pilot felt like the series Outcasts. Except here I liked the characters, I thought most of the family drama (with the exception of the cliche teenaged boy with the chip on his shoulder) was interesting, and the mysteries are initially intriguing. I liked that the fact that they didn't simply go back through time. It actually left me interested enough to watch more episodes.
My gods, you must be a very sad boy...Everything you wrote was a bullshit, or dinoraurshit! re-breathers: really? R U serious? They youngest kid was about to be exposed, they were afraid of it and you would expect them to think about some re-breathers...? Maybe the scientists of 22nd century DO know that they are in our timeline but there is hidden agenda! They are there to change the future but the people in 22nd century dont know about it cause they lives may be in danger! That is why the 6th pilgrimage is against the others. OTG? Really? Aah, cut the whining, Lost wasn't better either...It was dull for about half the first season, and even later on it needed time to find out what it was good at. This pilot was enjoyable, had creatures that were believable enough (and come on Darque, you weren't really thinking that they would really go to see the dinos? It is fiction after all...). Intriguing mysteries, touching moments, what more do you need? A top notch feature film each week? Come on, man
No pills needed thank you very much! There is a difference between being capable of critical thought and being depressed. One is removing personal feeling from the thought process while analyzing and the other is all about personal feelings. I digress..... On to your comments.
1.: re-breathers. If I were raised in a world where it was first nature to wear one when I stepped outside, I would grab it every time I went outside. Yes, even if the police were searching my house. It would be no different than me putting on shoes to leave the house now.. But no. It did not ruin the show seeing as I can dislike things that are subpar and still like pother aspects.
2: OTG... Inhale..... Smell the sarcasm... aaaaah.
3. The music was not terrible because it was un-listenable to me, it was terrible since it was overdone... It was like watching a Michael Bay film! Overdone score music is a pet peeve of mine. Kinda like people making accurate but negative comments about a show you like seems to be one of yours..
4. Well they mentioned it in the show that the reason they can go back is because it's a timeline separate from their own. So no worries about steeping on a butterfly..... It was their point that it was A-OK to do for that reason.

I don't compare Terra Nova to LOST. I don't see much of a connection honestly. I would compare it more to Earth 2, Outcasts, or Swiss Family Robinson or Land of the Lost before I ever thought of LOST.
I had a similar reaction (possibly from you even) once on here to another post I made being critical of the worst pilot of last season, The Cape. Just because it was bad did not stop people from liking it - nor should it have. We like what we like. However, The Cape went consistently downward in ratings every week and did not even air all it's limited episodes on the network (not to mention being panned by most critics). SO I was not alone in feeling it was a very poorly done pilot.
Lastly, simply solution for you if you don't like long comments (by me or anyone), Don't read them. Some people may not say what you want to hear since we all see things differently and have different likes and dislikes.
Enjoy the series while it lasts and enjoy your time on SpoilerTV.
the thing about separte timeline may be just official statement from the people in charge over TNova. The ordinary pilgrims may even not know that there is way back or that their deeds can have impact on the people in 22nd century. There must be some reason why the sixes are against the other pilgrims and why that guy drew the glyphs. And I bet the glyphs are the answer. The problem with your comment is that you mentioned just not important things like OTG, cough, re-breathers, too loud music...But the episode was over 80 minutes long. What about the main plot? What about the story in general? What about the characters? Does it all bode well for the future? I think it does. I think it was the best SERIES premiere of the year. Much better than some Falling Skies or other series that started this year. The story may not be too original, in Outcasts we had invisible aliens, in Earth2 visible aliens, here we have dinos, but still it's really good story with potential.
It was the older Shannon daughter (her name escapes me) who said that the reason they can go back in time is because it's a separate timeline, not the showrunners or something from interviews etc. I wrote that down as she said it, later they floated the theory of it being some conspiracy to control the future or that it may be the same time line in actuality.
I answered some of that in other areas.I liked quite a few of the characters even though almost everyone was a cliche. The rebellious son being too over the top for me to enjoy, but other wise they made most of the characters reasonably likable.I love the idea of a conspiracy from the future, gone back in time to adjust the future and profit from it. The family aspect I'm not a big fan of... I thin k it will actually detract from the rest of the series and plots at this point. I think most of the story was one cliche after another. Of course the son was going to get into trouble on day 1 by doing everything that is forbidden and Jim would earn Taylor's respect by saving him etc. Even more cliche was how each scene was shot. I mean they almost had the heavenly glow and chorus of angels singing as the Shannons walked into their new home. It was overdone for me personally. Along with the baby in a bag scene I mentioned before and many others. There just was no subtlety to any of the scenes from a writing or directing stand point. The best scene by far to me was the rescue near the end. The action was great and The VFX were not obvious and lacking as in most of the episodes. Even that had issues tho as the audio was not done well. That said, it was still fairly entertaining.. just very poorly executed.Execution value: 4Entertainment value: 7
The problem with this series is the lack of charismatic characters like in LOST and foremost the risk that anybody could die in any minute like 24 for example. This two elements are an insurance that many people will be watching the show for support only, TNova have a good intriguing premise, but they lost a lot with the family scheme, not love arc develop here. Only for the Shannon's kids much like "No Ordinary Family" and a bunch of uncharismatic characters surrounding Taylor. But lets see how they developed the story which is they strongest asset and introduction of new characters.
Damn, Darq. Were you in a bad mood when you watched this? I don't think I've ever read a review of yours that was so nitpicky. Critically speaking, I'm pretty sure you've been easier on worse shows than this. o_0
I agree about the creature CGI. The element interaction was shoddy at times but what bugged me most was the herky-jerky movement that was apparent when a dino moved at any speed faster than slow.
I can't attest to any audio problems, as I watched it as an HD rip on headphones and didn't have any audio challenges.
As for the cliche comment, I'm on the fence. I don't really consider this stuff cliche as much as I do a formula. This is generally family fare and family fare is built on formula. I'd expect a show like this to have those familiar trappings because it's escapist, comfort TV aimed at as broad an audience as possible. If it's going to survive, this show has to attract as many viewers as possible to escape the niche genre-show audience limitations. Escaping that niche to maintain a sustainable viewership usually comes with an easily digestible formula.
Was this a bad pilot? Nah. I wouldn't say that. Was it great? Certainly not. I'm interested to see if people like it enough to keep watching. I'm not sure they will. Hell, I'm not sure I will for that matter.
I always jot down notes as I watch a pilot the first time I watch so I can recall my initial impressions. Usually they are negative, but sometimes something strikes me as so subtle and brilliant I jot it down too. Just not the case with TN.That's why the first 7 or 8 notes are more bullet points than analysis and the last few paragraphs are more analysis.
I can accept formulaic for cliche, although I do think they are not mutually exclusive. Some formulas can be less cliche than others. I actually voted "OK" for the pilot, so I did not hate it either. I was just was really let down by something that had been delayed multiple times for post-production purposes and still ended up being less that great VFX wise. IF you are going to base a series around VFX the VFX need to be near perfect for it to work for me. Or they need to be edited so that the flaws are not so apparent. Either way Terra Nova accomplished neither.
I will be interested to see if the pilot has flaws that they worked out in the next episode or two. Seeing as they postponed the series premiere twice for re-shoots and post-production I guess I mistakenly expected all to be worked out in the pilot too. The ratings game will be interesting too. I just can't believe a 3 rating and 6 million viewers would be near enough to keep something this expensive going.
"IF you are going to base a series around VFX the VFX need to be near perfect for it to work for me. Or they need to be edited so that the flaws are not so apparent."
I saw better dinosaurs on the latest season of Primeval, which is sad because that show's budget is crap. Seriously, some of the CGI dinos were pretty good. Of course, other times they were bad but it's Primeval after all.
Anyway, If I remember correctly, there were a lot of creative tweaks to the show after the pilot (and a producer was replaced) but I'm not sure it'll matter much.
After all those months of heavy promotion from FOX, the premiere only managed to wrangle a 3.0 demo and less than 10 million total viewers. I always assumed that those numbers would be the bare minimum for success for a show as costly as Terra Nova. If there's any drop-off whatsoever in the coming weeks this program will undoubtedly be done after its initial 13 episode run.
Everything in this respect was bad. They really needed to hire a science advisor. Their moon garbage sounds like it was made up by a fifth grader. The distance they traveled in time would have made very little visible difference in the size of the moon if any at all.
If you want an excuse for "oooh big moon!" then at least make something up that can't be proven wrong by anyone with a high school education or the initiative to spend five minutes on Google.
If you're going to have a show featuring prehistoric dinosaurs and you can't pull that off you need a great plot. If you can't pull that off you need well-written characters. If you can't pull that off you need good actors. If you can't pull that off you need a cast that clicks and has good chemistry. If you can't pull that off you're Terra Nova.
Awful. I'm glad to see my predictions about the Pilot rewrites were correct. What kind of person says "You know what this show needs? More teenage angst and a focus on a strong family dynamic."? Not to mention I don't care how much angst you have packed into your little teenage head you know better to wander off in a land filled with dinosaurs. If you don't you deserve to be eaten, regurgitated, and eaten again.
I'm really disappointed too because I think the premise is great. It just needed a better execution.
I like Terra Nova A LOT. Okay, the pilot wasn't perfect. All the characters are very stereotype and the CGI needs to be improved but the overall premise is very interesting and I'm really looking forward to the next bunch of episodes.
I felt the same way about rewrites. Who takes and epic action series and then adds family annoyances... erm I meant to type "angst" to it and hope it will be better?
All though in all fairness I think Stephan Lang had good chemistry with his beard. His beard is a character too right?? Wait... no? I retract my comment.
I have hopes it will be better since the second hour was better than the first, but with their desire to concentrate on the weakest aspect of the series (the family drama), I have lowered my expectations.
It was a comedy of errors, both factual and continuity wise.
I can accept some of the science misinformation if they say this is a separate timeline. Then this epoch similar to our Cretaceous era could have higher oxygen levels. Or I suppose the oxygen levels on Earth could be so low they made the Cretaceous era's seem high. However that just adds more continuity errors with re-breathers and so on.....
That attention to detail is the difference between a successful series and a failed attempt, between good science-fiction and cheap SyFy.
I actually kinda liked it... Sure. The writing is kinda bad at times, and there are large portions of forced family drama/comedy. But the premise is really cool and I want to see more.
was a bit unsure as to whether to watch this, but decided to tune in. To be honest it was really was good and i hope it continues on this high level. :)
I really liked the premiere. In fact, of all the pilots I've seen so far this is my favorite. I liked how I felt immersed in both the future and past worlds. I loved how it built to action and then kept up at a steady pace. It had more action than any other premiere and quite frankly most shows on TV now. From the previews, it doesn't seem like this will change. I understand that this show is expensive to make and that the ratings are not stellar, but I hope that we get at least 1 full season. There are a lot of possibilities to this world and I'm enjoying the ride so far.
The family was the least interesting thing about the show to me. However, I found the father more annoying than the son. He's been gone for years. What makes him think he still calls the shots?
Wow, such contrasted opinions on this show :) That's entertaining to see/read (maybe more so than the Pilot, sadly). However, I wouldn't take down the show quite yet. It has always been very hard to create an amazing
Pilot for a SciFi show, because of the need to introduce the viewer not only to the different characters and their state of mind, but also to a completely different environment. That's a lot to back up in 1 or 2 hours.
I agree with the major scientific mistakes that should NOT be there, especially for a show dealing with SciFi, where the viewers are more or less science geeks themselves (me included :P). I loved the glyphs part, and how they reveal at the end that those are equations from the son :) I hope they will develop this plot a bit more in the next episodes.
I also did not like all the teenage angst displayed there, and the whole story about the son hating the dad and running away, beaking the rules, getting in danger, and then rescued...and obviously forgive its wonderful savior daddy at the end... I mean... how soapy is that?? Geez, before he even decided not to go the the orientation I could tell it would happen! I hope this terrible plot won't last beyond the pilot, because they're gonna loose some viewers very quickly... or get the fans of Hannah Montana on board :P... I don't know which one is worse...
Anyway. I hope that the family side won't be too prominent for the first part of the show, and that it will rather exploit the "conspiracy/mystery" part of it.
This series has potential, but they have got to get their facts right on certain scientific things. I poked around and found where they got their misinformation. Old textbooks no doubt or people who learned from them and haven't kept up with modern science at all! And as someone said, people who like science fiction tend to have at least a streak of sci geek in them. OK, some of have more than a streak. I know I do. : P
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteOK good to know it was not just my local broadcast screwing up the audio. I thought there were a handful of audio issues in the second hour mostly.
ReplyDeleteIt was the older Shannon daughter (her name escapes me) who said that the reason they can go back in time is because it's a separate timeline, not the showrunners or something from interviews etc. I wrote that down as she said it, later they floated the theory of it being some conspiracy to control the future or that it may be the same time line in actuality.
ReplyDeleteI answered some of that in other areas.I liked quite a few of the characters even though almost everyone was a cliche.
They had a MAJOR error in the science. In the Cretaceous 65 million yrs ago the oxygen levels were low and the Carbon Dioxide were high.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with this series is the lack of charismatic characters like in LOST and foremost the risk that anybody could die in any minute like 24 for example.
ReplyDeleteDamn, Darq. Were you in a bad mood when you watched this? I don't think I've ever read a review of yours that was so nitpicky. Critically speaking, I'm pretty sure you've been easier on worse shows than this. o_0
ReplyDeleteI agree about the creature CGI.
I was in a good mood honestly! XD
ReplyDeleteI always jot down notes as I watch a pilot the first time I watch so I can recall my initial impressions.

ReplyDeleteIf you want an excuse for "oooh big moon!" then at least make something up that can't be proven wrong by anyone with a high school education or the initiative to spend five minutes on Google.
ReplyDeleteAwful.
ReplyDeleteThis will make me laugh all day! XD
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way about rewrites.
ReplyDeleteI can accept some of the science misinformation if they say this is a separate timeline.
ReplyDeletewas a bit unsure as to whether to watch this, but decided to tune in. To be honest it was really was good and i hope it continues on this high level. :)
ReplyDeleteI really liked the premiere.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the giant bugs. If they go to giant spiders, I'm going to have to skip this show no matter how much I liked it.
ReplyDeleteThe family was the least interesting thing about the show to me. However, I found the father more annoying than the son. He's been gone for years. What makes him think he still calls the shots?
ReplyDeleteWow, such contrasted opinions on this show :) That's entertaining to see/read (maybe more so than the Pilot, sadly).
ReplyDeleteHowever, I wouldn't take down the show quite yet.
