Gillian and Jimmy continue to have the creepiest most co-dependest relationship ever. WTF at what you did when you changed your baby's diaper. Gillian, creepy much? God, if I was Angela, I'd GTFO.
Boy the action, drama, intensity and yes, the creepy factor picked right up where it left off!
A strange show indeed when the half-faced hitman may be the most well-balanced person on the series..... XD
Hmmmmm.... is he getting a bit obsessed over Jimmy's "perfect" life or just wanting a family of his own? I may have to reconsider who's m,ost well-baalanced in an episode or two. XD
Speaking of Richard Harrow, is it odd that I can accept his face without pause, but I'm fixated on his mask's mustache being longer and more unkempt than his own? It just looks so odd! Asymmetry confounds me... but I digress.....
Considering how creepy and messed up Gillian is, it's a wonder Jimmy is not even more screwed up than he is!
Van Alden's wife was a nice new character that really helps establish the agent himself. I loved the bed spring testing scene! XD
It's nice that Chalky seems like he will be having a larger role this season!... even if the his plot is disturbing and not so nice.
Awesome start to the new season as we delve deeper into Nucky's world. He did not get to where he is by being, meek or stupid. I can only imagine with everyone turning against him there will be some serious retribution this season!
I was not nearly as enthused about this first episode back as you were. There were some good parts but this episode was very slow for me.
The opening - Between the "previously on" opening and the ensuing music-accompanied montage the beginning of the episode moved at a glacial pace.
Van Alden & his wife - Everything is very well acted in all respects by both actors but I'm just not interested in either of them. If Van Alden is the focus of a scene and he's not going after someone, I just want the scene to be over.
Richard Harrow - I like Richard Harrow but he's a very quiet, soft spoken man and his scenes are usually very deliberate and nuanced. So, in an episode that was already slow, they should have pushed back the beginning of his storyline by an episode to pick up the pace of the premiere.
Now that my complaints are out of the way, on to the general comments...
First off, holy sh*t! How creepy is Gillian!? "I used to kiss his little winky." ...the hell!? I knew there was something incestuous about Her and her son but after seeing that, I'm wondering if there will be a sex scene before the end of this season. Ick.
Now Chalky. Damn, I feel bad for that guy. I'd really like to see someone stand firmly in that guy's corner without being two-faced about it.
Back to Harrow. He may have a thing for Jimmy's family, and with how crappy Jimmy's relationship with his wife is, I'm not so sure that Harrow won't make some headway with Angela. If Richard was a woman, I'm SURE he'd make some headway. :)
Finally, Nucky. He's usually smarter than this. If he wasn't crossed-up by his paternal feelings for Jimmy he would have sniffed out this plot by now.
So, it was an okay start to the season for the show with the most mommy and daddy issues on television. I just hope the pacing is better next time.
I think you're probably right on every point you make....
The thing is that when the acting and writing is that good I actually enjoy the slowness. The subtle emotions showing on faces... transitioning from one to th next emotion. - the spark of recognition on a face, all entertain me despite virtually no action or dialog going on.
Especially in Van Alden's case I guess. I find Agent Van Alden absolutely fascinating! Such a complex and original character... so layered and nuanced. I can feel his mind moving in every movement or stillness of his body. His inactivity speaks louder to me than some people's action scenes.
However, with Harrow I can see exactly what you mean. Deliberate, methodical and soft-spoken to an extreme and while I find him fascinating (and one of the most original characters ever on TV) the time can drag if he is the center of the scene.
I honestly think Nucky knew something was up, but he couldn't place his finger on exactly what was going through Jimmy's mind . Between his paternal feelings obscuring the truth, maybe he just did not want to see exactly what Jimmy was thinking. Denial, party of one! I guess up until now Nucky's little birds were always keeping him informed of everything going on in his kingdom. Now, with so many of his closest confidantes conspiring against him he is a bit out of the loop. this arrest should make him take stock I think... I hope!
I think Chalky is going to have a very rough season! XD It should make for good dramatic TV, but yeah.... like you I feel for the man.
I can see this as a set up episode fo the season and a bit of an update on what's gone on since we last sw the Boardwalk too. As far as set up episodes go, or recap episodes go, this was a phenomenal episode to me. Compared to some of the more heavy plot moving episodes, it was just a good episode I guess maybe.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I loved it! I missed this show.

And aww at Richard. Poor Chalky.
Whoa at Nucky getting arrested!
