We have our first episodes advancing to round 2: The End, Tall Tales, Swan Song, Croatoan, My Heart Will Go On, No Rest for the Wicked, The Monster at the End of this Book, and Lazarus Rising. Just like with the Favorite Episodes poll, only half of what I voted made it. It looks like round 1-2 will meet with similar results. Oh well. :-P Today we start with the other side of the bracket and it will go until midnight tomorrow, St. Louis time. The next few days should be interesting. I expect at least one poll will give people pause on which way to vote. Remember comments are that clear, cool summer night after weeks of record-breaking heat. Again my hardest choices were in matches where neither episode would ever make my top 64 list. Again there were matches I knew right away. Again only 1/2 my picks will win.
ReplyDeleteMy picks: The French Mistake, not voting, Good God Y'All, Bad Day at Black Rock, Weekend at Bobby's, AHBL1, Monster Movie, and of course, What is and What Should Never Be. Easiest picks - WiaWSNB and Bad Day. One I hated to vote against most - Caged Heat which had the misfortune of going against my favorite episode by far. I also enjoyed Mommy Dearest. I didn't vote in Dark Side of the Moon vs Heart because these are both very depressing and I don't like the idea of voting for either one. 'Tis better to let those who do like the episodes battle it out instead. Oh, and yes, I did vote for a meta episode. I'll vote for it next round too, but then no meta episodes for me.

ReplyDeleteMonster Movie is my favorite specialty show. I have a thing for old movies and black and white anyway. However, my favorite is how they blended camp, pathos, and more funny than your average sitcom. The word coupon always makes me laugh now. The scene with the pizza delivery guy may be my choice for the best scene by guest actors and that's a tough one to win. All the guests nail it and Jamie's "You ever think that maybe you're lonely because you kill people." is one of my favorite quotes. Plus, rehymenated. Bwah!

ReplyDelete- The French Mistake - Never really liked "Free To Be You and Me": the brothers behaving as if they only went through hell when they were together just didn't clinch it for me.
- Dark Side of the Moon - The scene where Dean disposes of the amulet at the end really got to me: it is one of the most heart-wrenching moments of the series. Such a short scene, but with a heavy load of raw emotions and feelings: a long-standing symbol, one of the only constants in the boys' lives, gone.
- Point of No Return - Zachariah dead! Yay!
- Bad Day at Black Rock - All the funny Sam scenes were amazing.
- Weekend at Bobby's - Nice insight into Bobby's daily life and it was Jensen's directorial debut.
- All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1 - The penultimate episode of the Yellow-Eyed Demon storyline. I liked "After School Special", in part because of young Sam, but it just didn't do it for me.
- Mommy Dearest - Eve, the Mother of All, is killed after all the build up since "Like A Virgin". It was a twist to see Eve die so suddenly when we were led to believe that she was the Big Bad of the season and possibly more.
- What Is And What Should Never Be - A day in the life of a perfectly happy and normal Winchester family.
Bobby and Rufus is what made Weekend at Bobby's for me too. Well that and cobbler, wood chipper, The Gambler, the phone bank, Sheriff Mills coming through with Rufus....OK maybe it was more like the whole episode.
ReplyDeleteI had the hardest time choosing between Point of No Return and Good God Y'All simply because Zachariah died and that was such a visceral thrill. I agree that of all the depressing things that happen in Dark Side of the Moon, Dean tossing the amulet was the best/worst. So much conveyed in one simple gesture. It was at this time I expected another season 4 brother rift and it hurt my heart.

It was a very sad episode but we did get to see Lucifer introduce himself to Sam and the peek we get at the two boys going it alone is depressing, but interesting.
Love Sam's interaction with Lindsey, he needs to be around normal girls more, instead of supernatural females!
Dark Side of the Moon
While I was watching it for the first time it kept my interest right through.
The ending with the Amulet was right up there amongst the saddest moments, of course.
Now I would certainly classify it as depressing, but I want to give it my vote remembering my first viewing.
Point of no Return was an episode that never had a dull moment.
There was almost too much happening for one episode.
Dean's wink and consequent defeat of the so evil Zachariah was priceless!
Bad Day at Black Rock is in my top ten episodes,
I could watch it over and over and never get bored with it. Jensen and Jared act it out so well too.
Have to give it to -Are You There God? It's Me,Dean Winchester.
It's not a favourite, but it was nice to see some old friends such as Hendricksen and Meg.
Very difficult here, but I have to go with After School Special for the adorable little Sam and ever protective " little big brother"
I would usually vote for AHBLp1 but I suspect it will win anyway.
I vote for Monster Movie which actually grew on me the second time around.
Black spot- Dean in Hansel costume; just no!
What is and What Shoud Never Be would have had my vote against just about any other episode.
Terrific story.
It would have been nice to have had a sequel ( impossible I know! ) just to have seen how Dean and alt. Sam would have repaired their relationship.

ReplyDeleteMost of these were pretty easy. I had a one difficult choice, but due to a major lack of sleep and coffee I've already forgotten which pairing it was. Um. Oh yeah, it was between What Is and What Should Never Be and Caged Heat. Went with the former because it was, for me, an ep that showed Dean is a hero (at least to my definition.) He's got an ideal world but makes a choice to walk away from all of that to save and protect people.

ReplyDeleteThe only difficult choice for me was between Monster Movie and Mommy Dearest. Both episodes have so much awesomeness.
In the end I did a coin toss cuz that's a real scientific, logical way to do it :P
Otherwise I'd have to rewatch both episodes and I won't have time to do that today. See this is what sucks - I have to expedite earthshatteringly important decisions in such an arbitrary manner because real life gets in the way of my obsession.
The French Mistake - the best comedy episode since Bad Day at Black Rock. It's just amazing how they went all meta, broke the fourth wall and succeeded. The entire episode is hilarious, but I think my favourite is:

but I gotta admit I love the Cas in the whore house scene from FTBYAM, it's adorable ;)
Heart - that's a vote against Dark Side of the Moon, I really dislike the way they showed heaven (actually, I dislike that they showed heaven at all) and the episode is just too depressing, especially the ending. And we lost the amulet in this episode (time to bring it back already!)
Point of No Return - a great 100th episode that brought us the death of Zachariah and the Cas-Dean confrontation. I really liked Good God, Y'All as well, especially War and his way of making people kill each other, but my strong dislike towards Jo wouldn't let me vote for it.
Bad Day at Black Rock - I still laugh through this episode, even though I've seen it so many times already. Love the idea of the rabbit's foot, Sam's bad luck, Dean's good luck, Dean's reaction to Sam's good and bad luck, I even love Bela in this episode and the classic "I'm Batman", "I lost my shoe" and "Son of a bitch". Although, I also really like the clown episode ("planes crash!" "and apparently, clowns kill" ;))
Are You There, God? It's Me, Dean Winchester - I really loved the witnesses and the tension they brought, as they were people who the boys and Bobby failed to save. We also found out about the seals, Apocalypse and Lucifer and got a kick ass Castiel scene in the end. I really don't think it should be loosing to the almost action-free Weekend at Bobby's.
All Hell Breaks Loose 1 - even though I love the second part more, this is still a great episode and contains one of the most emotional scenes ever. After School Special, on the other hand, is pretty average (and is here probably only because all the 13th episodes were rather weak).
Mommy Dearest - Jefferson Starships and the four working together make this episode a winner, plus there is the big reveal that Crowley is alive and Cas is working with him. Monster Movie is entertaining, but nothing more than that.
What Is and What Should Never Be - I've praised this episode many times already, so I'm just gonna say it's one of the best ever.
btw, seems there's gonna be a big fight between Mommy Dearest and Monster Movie, all the other polls have strong leaders, but this one is pretty much 50-50

This was very tough with the exception of Monster Movie and What is and What Should Never Be. These are, hands down, two of my favorites and will always be easy votes, unless they end up in competition against each other or against A Very Supernatural Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI always find something special in every episode so there really aren't any that I don't like. For me WIAWSNB is my all time favorite because it shows us how much Dean is willing to do to save people who have no idea that monsters even exist and probably wouldn't even bother to say thank you if they knew what he had sacraficed.
Monster Movie was a great mix of fun and parody. I love the old black and white monster flicks so this was perfect for me. It had great one liners, a villan that you couldn't help but feel a little sorry for, a sassy leading lady and Dean in liederhosen...what more could you ask for...haha
I'm looking forward to the next round as I think it is only going to get more and more interesting!
I decided to vote for Heart. Even though both episodes were depressing, Heart was only really depressing at the end, whereas Dark Side of the Moon was pretty much depressing through-out the whole episode.

The toughest match-up was After School Special vs. All Hell Breaks Loose Pt. 1. They're both equal insofar as that they are very uneven episodes. The edge went to After School Special for Sam kicking some "Dirk the Jerk" ass. Having Candice Accola in the episode helped as well.
I'm not doing bad with my picks. Some of these choices were hard and others were easy. Heart was a difficult choice but I didn't go with it. But this has been fun BTW gorgeous weather here in Toronto nice & cool after lousy heat

ReplyDeleteDean in leiderhosen was definitely a shock. As for What is and What Should Never Be. I don't even have to look at the other episode. My vote and my heart remain with WiaWSNB. Too bad it is unlikely to make it past round 3.
ReplyDeleteI've never been a big fan of Everybody Loves a Clown either. The rakshasa is an interesting monster but the story didn't do much for me. In all honesty, neither did the Roadhouse at that time.

ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of the heaven setting either. I didn't buy or like the boys have died multiple times and never remembered it plot contrivance. I'm not interested in Kripke's view of heaven, hell, and religion as a whole. I thought it was a mess when they brought God into it. Basically, it's a whole theme I could have done without.

ReplyDeleteI hate that Caged Heat was against WiaWSNB in the first round too. I was hoping it would go up against a couple of episodes I didn't like in the first 2 rounds. It was a difficult vote but not for the usual reasons. I also agree that there are some exceptional episodes today, which means it is going to get very difficult when they go against each other.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I tend to like on Supernatural is that even the monsters get sympathy. Who wouldn't feel bad for a kid whose dad tried to kill him? That's terrible. I like equally though that the sympathy ends and the monsters are killed. A sob story background is no excuse for murder - even if you do make me laugh.
ReplyDeleteI completely did not make the connection of the girl in After School Special and Caroline on Vampire Diaries. Shame on me because I found Caroline and Matt to be the only tolerable people on that show when I watched season 1.

Good God, Ya'll is one of the best titled eps and I loved the entire set up and the amazing song cue for Spirit in the Sky (... and hits just keep on coming.), but Point of No Return was the 100th ep and they pulled out all the stops. But I'd rather have the boys together and not getting along than apart for most of the ep, so I voted for Good God, Ya'll. Other than that, pretty easy:
