Supernatural - Ultimate Episode Finals - Poll

21 Aug 2011

It's finally here - the finish line of our Supernatural Ultimate Episode Contest. What started out with 64 episodes is down to 2. We made it in record time. Some decisions were simple while others ended in pulled hair. Thank you to everyone who participated these last few weeks and those who helped determine the 64 by voting in the episode # contest. It's been a good hiatus with you. Thanks for sharing your opinions, perspectives, and of course favorites. As always, if you have ideas for what you would like to see in a future hiatus, leave a comment. Until next time, I'll see you in the Character Cup. Happy voting!

  1. What is and What Should Never Be for me.  I'm surprised it made it this far but I will never vote against it.

What is and What Should Never Be... The End was good and a favorite, but it doesn't compare.

  3. "What is and What Should Never Be" for me as well.  Awesome episode & like Dahne I would never vote against it in a poll.

It's interesting how the two final episodes deal with things that never happen.

    ReplyDelete
  4. It'd be tough for me to vote against, "What Is and What Should Never Be"....so I won't. "The End" is a great episode, and against nearly any other episode I'd vote for it, but it's not quite the best.

    ReplyDelete
  5. What Is and What Should Never Be... for a little while everyone was happy and living an 'apple pie' life.

    ReplyDelete
  6. By far this was not the finale I was expecting. I honestly thought the other 2 semifinalists would have made it. I also thought mystery spot would win bit that's a different story.
Anyhow, the end is a truly incredible episode but I voted what's and what should never be. Easily. It is an amazing episode and Fully deserves to win. They both do actualy
Btw, thanks so much for putting this whole competition together dahne, was heaps of fun

  7. the end for me there is nothing i hate or even slightly dislike about this episode, in my opinion this is a perfect episode.

    ReplyDelete
  8. I voted for The End. I won't bore everyone by repeating why I love this episode so much.
I also love What Is and What Should Never Be, so it hurts to not vote for it.

Thanks Dahne for putting these polls together. They've helped make hellatus so much more bearable. :)

  9. Noticed how in all (including semi final) episodes Dean has to decide in what kind of world he wants to live in and if he wants Sam in it?

*checks results* It's a tie! 42-40. What to do what to do..?

What is and What Should Never Be

  10. Sorry, can't vote for either... Neither had real Sam in it for more than a couple of minutes. WiaWSNB was a great concept for an Alternate Universe and The End was a great concept for a Future Universe... I might feel a stronger pull towards the Dean in WiaWSNB than the Dean in the End, but the Dean in the End was potentially "real" and the world was potentially "real"... So, can't choose between them for best and neither would make my top 20... Though both were great episodes.... That just let's y'all know how many favorites I do have. I am OK with either being top dog since mine couldn't be there.

  11. The final poll is the easiest one..
What Is and What Should Never Be is a great episode, but there is no episode I would choose over The End(although there are a couple of episodes that would make it really hard for me).
But I'm pleasantly surprised that What Is and What Should Never Be made it to the finals..I was expecting a final between The End and Swan Song!

Anyway, thanks for the polls,Dahne! There were fun, awesome and helped pass the time. Now,by the time one of the guys wins the Character Cup the premiere will be so close! ; )

    ReplyDelete
  12. What is and What Should Never BE of course.  The End is grea, but it doesn't compare with  the other.  It's pretty much neck and neck right now.  Hpe it wins.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ok, I voted for The End because I think that it is a better episode conceptually. I couldn't think of any other way to approach these two. They are two of my favourites. The End was an instant favourite and What is and What Should Never Be has steadily become an episode I reflexively put on when I need a good dose of Supernatural. But The End smacks of the maturity of the show and as the seasons have progressed I've enjoyed that level of maturity in the storytelling. So yeah, The End....but it weren't easy. Thanks for putting this together Dahne....it has been equal parts pleasure and pain!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I am actually not that happy about both episodes, but I had to vote for The End, I enjoyed that one much more.

    ReplyDelete
  15. It was a really tough choice for me since I love both episodes equally. In every aspect (directing, writing, etc..) they were both great but, for me, WIAWSNB has a slight advantage because I found JP's performance in The End a bit meh. I decided, though, to vote for The End because it would have made a great series finale (unlike Swan Song which I found laughably bad).

And as I type this comment I realise that I should have voted for WIAWSNB because I liked everything in it, including Sam; in The End (when he was and when he wasn't Lucifer)  not so much...

    ReplyDelete
  16. What Is and What Should Never Be

    ReplyDelete
  17. Thank you for taking the time to put this together for us. Made the wait a little easier. :)

    ReplyDelete
  18. wow I'm really shocked The End is leading by 100 votes. If I had to put my money on one of the episodes, I'd choose WIAWSNB. Interesting.

anyway, What Is and What Should Never Be for me. I don't think it's my favourite episode of the entire SPN (it's still undecided and probably will remain so), but I still prefer it to The End (which I think is great anyway).
my perfect finale would have to include at least one of these:
Mystery Spot, Jus in Bello, In My Time of Dying, All Hell Breaks Loose part 2, On the Head of a Pin

but this final isn't bad either ;) I'm really glad we ended up with two amazing episodes, instead of just decent ones, like Swan Song. I really was afraid Swan Song would win the whole thing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I see your point. I really wish we'd have some more "real" episodes, with both boys equally represented in the final, that's why I voted for their opponents in the previous round. But on the other hand, we could've had a lot weaker final, so all in all I'm happy with the results.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lucifer in The End is the main reason why I love the episode! I think Jared did a hell of a great job there. I don't remember ever seing such an interesting impersonation of the devil.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The End for me, though I do WIAWSNB. Apart from the unbelievably long title that is.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What is and What Should Never Be. As much as I love The End, like Dahne and BarnabusStinson, can't vote against WIaWSNB - it's even my favorite title;)

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's crazy that it looks like The End is winning this whole contest. I guess a lot of people love it alot more than I do. Of course I think it's a great episode, but to be honest, it's not even in my top 10 list.. I'm not trying to make it look like I hate the episode or anything, I just don't love it enough to think it would win. There are plenty of episodes I like better. I would have liked it better if All Hell Breaks Loose Part 2 would be fighting against What is and What Should Never Be in this round instead.. but I guess that's just my opinion :P
My vote easily goes to What is and What Should Never Be :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. The End for me! :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I voted for WIAWSNB because it was just good, but The End is also a favorite.  Jensen did such a fantastic job in both episodes it's hard to choose.   He's such a good actor that he really brings so much more to the episodes and raises the quality of the writing.

Either one winning is fine, but the fact that both made it to the finale speaks volumes. I'm pleased to see these two go neck in neck, both are good.

    ReplyDelete
  26. No no no no Noooo. Come on "What is and what should never be".

    ReplyDelete
  27. The End is my pick though Im suprized that these are the final two!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Your welcome.  Thanks for participating.  I find these two episodes an interesting finale also.  They are both so different and yet like you said they take place in a world that never comes to pass.  These are not the two that I expected to make it into the finale.

    ReplyDelete
  29. These are both great episodes but you always regret the ones that have gone , like Mystery Spot, my personal favourite.

However I voted for What is and What Should Never Be although I see it is falling behind in the poll.
    .
Well, I am happy with The End too and my personal favourites" will live to fight another day."

Thanks to Dahne from me too, for this interesting poll and to everyone who took the time to comment giving us all an insight into each others  preferences

    ReplyDelete
  30. I feel the same way.  I will be happy if either of these two won.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love how each character has their own bubble of happiness that permeates through the beginning of the episode.  They both smile and laugh and enjoy themselves for once.  But, I also like how DreamSam refuses to let DreamDean go after the djinn by himself.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Glad you liked it.  I had fun too.  I thought for sure Mystery Spot would be in the final four and quite frankly I expected it to win also.  Several races ended up differently than I would have suspected when we started the contest.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would agree that The End is like Mary Poppins - Practically perfect in every way.  There is so much to love about the episode from Cas' hilarious phone line to the reconciliation of Dean and Sam at the end.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You're welcome.  I enjoyed getting to know people's taste in episodes better.  I knew you were voting for The End. :-)   It is such a great episode.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Interesting observation.  I think in What is and What Should Never Be though, it is never a question of whether he wants Sam in his life.  Even in the dream world, he makes a point to try to reconnect with Sam and he vows that they will get the brother relationship on track again.  That's one of the things I like best about the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  36. So... The End was my favorite episode of Season Five, saving what little faith I had left in it after the first three episodes (that just didn't feel quite right yet). It was a good mix of mythology, good acting, action and humour. It always entertains.

Although What Is and What Should Never Be is not as action packed and interesting, it wins for me due to its story and execution. It pushed Dean's character into being less stereotypical (making him much more suited for the rest of the show and making him an equal of Sam's for once). It also demonstrated the amazing worth of Kripke's, using juxtaposition to create a very cool vibe. The world is bright and happy with comical music, while the real world is dark and creepy. I loved it to death and it will definately be an ultimate episode in my mind.

  37. You're welcome and thanks for sharing your opinions each time.  I've really enjoyed this contest because it helps me know the Supernatural community on SpoilerTV better.

It might have been The End vs Swan Song in the finale except that they were both in the same bracket so they faced each other earlier.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Sorry about the pain but I'm glad you had some fun.  Any time is a great time to watch WiaWSNB.  I'll be watching it this evening.  :-)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Welcome to SpoilerTV.  Thanks for sharing your opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  40. While Swan Song is not my favorite, I think I would have been upset if The End really were the end.  I would hate to not know if Sam chose Lucifer for real or not.  I like tidy endings so not knowing if they had conquered the Apocalypse would also have driven me nuts.

    ReplyDelete
  41. You're welcome.  I'm glad it helped.  It was nice to be distracted from the unbelievably long hiatus this year.

    ReplyDelete
  42. At first I was concerned that Swan Song would win the whole thing too.  I think if we ran this contest last year, it would have.  I'm not surprised at all that The End is winning.  Frankly I am delightfully surprised that WiaWSNB is in the finals.

If I had to hand pick which episodes were in the final, this might be what i would have picked.  However, with the exception of In My Time of Dying and On the Head of a Pin, any of your choices would have been favorite contenders for me as well.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Ew I don't think I'm even going to vote. I don't like either episode. Like at all. The only redeeming factor is hippy Cas in The End. Looks like The End is going to win regardless so I guess I'll just throw my vote that way.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yes, but The Dean that we know wants Sam in his life, not the Dean from the dream. Though we don't really know what dream!Dean was thinking about his relationship with Sam. Maybe he didn't like it either.

But he still had to decide which world he wants to stay in! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Okay, so then how would you like his performance to have been since it was a bit "meh" for you considering this was a whole new take on the devil and not something that's mustache-twirling and tapping fingertips together with an evil laugh to accompany the actions.

Jared's performance both as Lucifer and as Sam in The End is what made this episode so fantastic. Because we saw the desperation for wanting to be back with Dean, we saw the future and what would become of Sam, and we saw the brothers reunited back together at the end of the episode. How is that "meh" exactly?

    ReplyDelete
  46. I haven't seen The End yet so I can't vote but I'm a little surprised WIAWSNB made it to the finals. It's good but for the type of episode its more top 15 than top 2...

Good stuff running the competition Dahne, very impressive and fun for the SPN fans who hang around these parts! :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. My vote goes to The End, even so I love What is and What Should Never Be too

    ReplyDelete
  48. Huh?  I don't understand.  The only Dean in the dream world is the Dean we know.  He clearly states that he wants to build a relationship with Sam.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, including thinking something is "meh".  I liked Sam as Lucifer but others think differently.  In fact, I would describe Mark Pellegrino as Lucifer as "meh".  This was largely because of how it was written but I didn't find Lucifer at all scary and I wasn't impressed at all either.  Many people disagree with me and that's fine.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I don't get these long titles either.  I know it is based on a song but there had to be other song titles that would have worked just as well while still being shorter.  :-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I expected it to be AHBL2 vs The End to be honest and I would have been fine with that one too.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I love these two also, although I was mentally prepared to say goodbye to WiaWSNB.  I figured The End would make it to the Great 8, but I really thought Lazarus Rising would beat it.  I would have been good having it in the finals too.  Basically, I agree with most of the choices in the last few rounds and that never happens.

    ReplyDelete
  53. If we decide to do this again next year, it will be interesting to see if Mystery Spot will make it farther in the contest.  It is the biggest shock to me, although I guess I was surprised that The French Mistake made it as far as it did too.  In some ways it came down to the luck of the draw.

    ReplyDelete
  54. It's well known that I am not a fan of season 5.  For me, The End and Changing Channels are my top episodes from it and it's gratifying to see them do so well in this contest.

I agree that the bright and sunny atmosphere of WiaWSNB is a highlight.  It was also a sheer relief from the first year when the WB must have forgotten to pay the electric bill.  The scene mowing the lawn and then Sam and Jessica pulling up may be the first time I could clearly see everyone in the scene at the same time.  No shadows to be found anywhere.  I liked that.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thanks!  Can't wait to start the Character Cup.  I think you will really like The End.  It's almost like an alternate world.  :-)  By the way, thanks for the link to Fringe season 3.  I just finished 6955 kHz.  I think I might be opposite of most people because I am liking the here world better than the alter-world.  I like Broyles from alter-world better for sure and I'm glad Astrid has a purpose and Charlie is alive, but I like Walter and Peter best and they are sadly missed when it's an alter-world episode.  Looking forward to seeing what's next.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Nope.  Can't do it.  I'm voting for not voting.  :)

    ReplyDelete
  57.  I never said that nobody is entitled to their own opinion. This person said nothing about Sam being Lucifer. This person dissed Jared's performance, and that is why I am bothered. But I'll bet if me or anybody else spoke up about any of Jensen's performances being "meh" the whole damn board would blow up. Sorry for trying to defend Jared as well as his performance... =/

    ReplyDelete
  58. What is and What Should Never Be is my all time favorite episode so it will always get my vote. The End was an excellent episode and is high on my list of favorites as well. WIANWSNB is a bittersweet episode for me.Seing the boys in sunshine and doing ordinary everyday things was a big change. Dean mowing the lawn, Sam and Jess coming for a visit, the whole family going out for Mary's birthday dinner, this was all new and fun.
For Dean to have almost everything he had ever wished for in the palm of his hands and then for him to have to make the personal decision to let it all go was heartbreaking. It showed me that he truly carries the weight of the world on his shoulders and that he is willing to sacrafice everything for the innocent.
I am happy to see my favorite episode in the final vote but I am not surpeised at all. This has been great fun and I am looking forward to the next poll!

    ReplyDelete
  59. This is almost impossible!!! My 2 most fav episodes...not exactly sure why but I went with The End as much as I love WIAWSB Dean happy for just a while (poor boy has had few and far between happy times) but something with Future Dean and Dean facing off against each other gets me every time. Love the scene when Dean meets Future Dean and is handcuffed. Always love how Dean convinced Future Dean that he was him or him was he or my head hurts!!! can we say "panties" :D

    ReplyDelete
  60. I figured as much.  This must be your worst possible final.  Two "what if" episodes going against each other.  That would be like The Monster at the End of This Book vs The Real Ghostbusters for me.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Agreed.

Depending on how long the Character Cup goes, we may have a few short polls between it and the premiere.  However, I think the character cup will last about a month and then we will have made it through hiatus!  Yeah!

    ReplyDelete
  62. I love Dean vs Dean too but the line that always gets me is actually Chuck's.  Surprising because I can't stand him in any other episode.  Still, when he tells Dean to hoard toilet paper like its gold because it is, I chortle every single time.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I'm with you. There should be a third option for Neither!

    ReplyDelete
  64. bigtrickedoutnametag22 August 2011 at 02:44

For some reason I knew The End would win.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Well, The End was the number 1 ranked episode coming into this contest based on people's votes in the #episode contest.  I guess it shouldn't be too big a shock that it is so popular in this one.  :-)

    ReplyDelete
  66. bigtrickedoutnametag22 August 2011 at 04:55

    I guess people love it.

I can totally understand why... Sarah Palin being president, zombies, Dean's love for women's underwear, drug-addled Castiel, orgies, toilet paper, Jared as Lucifer... Good times.

    ReplyDelete
  67. the ending is just so beautiful!!! and cas was so adorable :P

    ReplyDelete
  68. I thought hippy Cas was really, really sad. He had basically given up. There was no more heaven and he was left behind or chose to stay behind. I kind of found that part rather tragic... In The End I liked Castiel saying he would wait on the side of the road, Chuck with the Toilet paper... and the Dean / Lucifer scene at the end. "So, I win." (quote of course from The End -- It sounds rude when I read it).

    ReplyDelete
  69. Ooooh, I'd vote for Monster at the End of This Book in a flash compared to the above. That at least makes my top 10 over all... There is a wonderful YouTube video based on a take off of the Bruce Almighty kind of movies starring Chuck... It is Hilarious!

  70. Well I'm one happy Supernatural fan.
We've had weeks of having the opportunity to say what we love and don't love about every single episode.
And boy, don't we love to talk about our show?

And The End won!! YES!!!  I'm pleased because, yes, it is my favorite episode so far (I won't say favorite episode ever, because who knows what S7 has in store for us.) Having said that, these polls have made me realise just how many other episodes are on my AWESOME list.

Yes, there are some episodes I'd rather not watch too often, but every episode has at least one thing to like, whether it's a oneliner, or a guest actor, or a plot twist.

Whether or not we agree that The End is the 'Ultimate Episode', we have a show that gets it right far more than it gets it wrong. We are a fandom with many and varied opinions, and that's a great thing. Wouldn't we have the most boring fandom in the history of tv if we all agreed on everything?

    ReplyDelete
  71. I think The End is a good choice. It's an episode that shows that the brohers have to stick together cause if you separate them bad and trully evil things will happen! Mwahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  72. You are so right, and the scene at the end where Sam comes to meet his brother is so touching.

Sam seems slightly afraid of his brother and when Dean pulls out the knife Sam feels that he might use it against him.
     Poor Sammy.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I just saw these comments and since they are based on my comment I think I should answer.

First, you don't have to apologise for defending an actor or his performance (although I think your last sentence reads as a bit sarcastic, so I'm not sure if I should take it seriously, but my sentiment still stands; nobody should have to apologise for their opinion). I don't think anybody is offended by different opinions about a TV show.

So, according to the above, I think it's OK for me to not like JP's performance and not to have to apologise for it. I didn't like it because I was supposed to see him as the evil incarnate and for me it fell really flat. I wasn't chilled, I wasn't feeling any "evil vibes" if you prefer. To me, he seemed like an "ordinary" villain monologuing his "evil plan". So yes, as Lucifer I saw him as meh.

As for JP's performance making the episode fantastic, again, this is your opinion and many would agree or disagree. Personally, I found JA's performance fantastic. That's also OK, so I can't understand why you sound so defensive (I should note that this is how your first comment reads to me; if not, I apologise).

Finally, I can't really comment on how I would like his performance to have been. I can only comment and criticise on what I see.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I agree completely with your description of Jared's performance as Lucifer.

When he turned and we saw that the Devil was in his body it was so creepy, and at the same time sad, and that was due to Jared giving the right mix of evil and pathos.

I thought it was a wonderful performance and the meeting of the brothers at the end was so bitter-sweet.
Sammy was fearful of meeting his brother and Jared conveyed that perfectly.
When Dean brought out the knife you could see the uncertainty on Sam's face, he wasn't sure if Dean was going to use it on him or give it to him.
Jared's face also perfectly conveyed the torment that he had been going through while on his own.

The very fact that he has a different acting technique from Jensen, who appears more vocal in his recitation, sometimes leads us to overlook Jared's brilliant acting but if one pays more attention his talent is obvious.

Even in the scenes where Sam has no lines, Jared's face is always mobile and he communicates his emotions through that alone.

Jared and Jensen are both great actors with their own individual style which is enhanced even more when they play off against each other.

    ReplyDelete
  75. You're going to have to forgive me. With all the Sam/Jared hate that has been flying around lately, this was a knee-jerk reaction.  It was not my intention to be sarcastic but yes I was defensive. The reason being why Jared's performance for Lucifer came off that way was because that is how they wrote Lucifer. That's not Jared's fault.

Lucifer was supposed to seem like a calm, and as relatively normal for a villain as you can get. Even that's how Mark Pellegrino played him. He was supposed to make you want to have sympathy for the guy (whether you did or not that's up to you). He was not written to seem evil. His "sympathy" tactics and discreet trickery and facial ticks were supposed to be subtle, but enough for you to pick up on that this guy is not somebody to be trusted or feel sympathy for.

Referring to humans as "the little hairless apes" and killing future!Dean with just one foot on the neck, it was all supposed to be subtle because that is how he was written. Jared acts what is written on the script adding his own flair to it. The evil incarnate was never supposed to appear as evil incarnate. If Jared had only just begun acting on the show, I could see you saying his performance was "meh" but Jared has been on the show since the beginning.

That's why I don't feel it's fair to criticize his performance when Jared once explained that this is how the devil was written, now it was a matter of him figuring out how to play him properly. By Swan Song, Lucifer had had it with everything which is why his personality changed so much. Jared was supposed to keep everything subtle. Try watching Jared's performance with different eyes next time you watch it. Maybe you'll see it in a new light if you didn't know what I just told you. How do I know what I know above? Because Jared has said it himself on numerous occasions.

No, my comment was sarcastic. I just wanted to know how exactly Jared's performance was meh to you. Now that I know, I've explained why Lucifer's character didn't scream evil incarnate until the finale.

  76. Well, it's done.  The End is crowned ultimate episode for this hiatus.  Thanks to everyone who voted, commented, and kept the fun going.  Here's to next Monday when we can turn our attention to the Character Cup.  May Supernatural place better than last year.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I would have voted for Monster At The End Of This Book too. It's in my top 3 episodes of all time (the other two being On the Head of A Pin and My Bloody Valentine).

    Also great video. hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  78. I honestly never thought the end would win but I'm still very happy with this result. It is an extremely deserving episode, as was the rest of the finale four and I would have been glad to see any of them win

Let's all hope dean can win the character competition!!

    ReplyDelete
  79. Tough but good choice.

    ReplyDelete
  80. "The End" one. I wonder if it was because of the double Dean's? I know it was for me.
