Supernatural - Episode 7.05 - Shut Up, Dr. Phil - Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters to guest star!

Aug 17, 2011

The CW’s Supernatural aims to slay you by reuniting Buffyverse alumni Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters — aka Cordelia and Spike — in one of its Season 7 episodes, TVLine has learned exclusively.

What’s more, the two actors, who previously worked together both on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and its David Boreanaz-fronted spin-off Angel, will be playing husband and wife on the spooktacular drama, which launches its new cycle on Friday, Sept. 23, at 9/8c. Watch for this glorious genre-gasm to come in the new season’s fifth episode, titled “Shut Up, Dr. Phil.”

“This episode is ‘Bewitched gone wrong,’” reveals showrunner Sera Gamble. “[It was] all upside for this successful man (Marsters) while he was married to the witch (Carpenter), but now that he’s pissed her off, the whole town is paying the price.”

  10. This pairing of guest stars seems to be very popular and that's a good thing for the show.

I ,myself, am happy that there doesn't seem to be any news about new angels or demons, and I hope that the Heaven/Hell arc has been put to the side, at least for now, so as to give us all these fresh plots and adventures.

I can imagine Dean won't be too happy as I seem to remember that he hates witches!

  15. Let me say first that this is some great stunt casting.  Nice job, Supernatural.  I would like to add though that, given the plot of the episode, Juliet Landau would have been an even better choice than Carpenter.

  16. I just paíd $22.85 for an íPad 2-64GB and my girlfriend loves her her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.78 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $625 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from,

  19. I take it you're not a Buffy fan?  Supernatural is a lot like Buffy was.  People have compared it to the X-Files, but I think Supernatural is Buffy and Fringe is the X-Files.  Supernatural/Buffy is about a group of young adults going after the monster of the week with lots of snark and dark humor.   X-Files/Fringe is about a male/female couple who work for a government agency going after wide-ranging government/corporate conspiracies involving life outside of this world/dimension.  I think those of us jumping up and down right now just really miss Buffy.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah, between the bodily fluids and the gutting of the"poor Wabbits", I agree completely with you and Dean!

    ReplyDelete
  21. OOOOOMMMMMMGGGGG. Now all that is missing is SMG and DB. And SMG is on a CW show now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Spectacular casting! SpN always has a way of getting the best guest stars at the right time. Love this news!

    ReplyDelete
  23. wow I didn't realize that the actress's name was Charisma... seriously who calls a baby Charisma? she'd be a great addition to a meta episode ("Misha? Jensen? /Charisma?/ what's up with the names around here?" :P)
other than that, it's a great casting!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Best casting news ever for this show! James Masters is amazing, if only we could have had him on the show years ago and kept him around as a regular. Charisma is beautiful and I look forward to seeing her on TV again. Very excited for this episode.

  25. what's the betting Dean its on this particular witch, Charisma is smokin' hot there is no way Dean doesn't hit on her witch or not?!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Loving the Buffyverse casting choices.  These two are needed back on tv :)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Actually I never got round to watching Buffy.
I'm not a great vampire/high school teen lover.

I loved X-files and I religiously watched Charmed.
I also liked Lost and Alias, and I enjoy those series that have some sort of mystery or unusual plot-line going through them.

I thought I would have loved Fringe, but I was put off when I watched the first episode simply because none of the lead actors appealed to me in any way.

I agree with you that Supernatural can't really be compared to X-files.
X-files bent more towards the Alien/government plot sort of idea.

I don't think it can really be compared to Buffy either.
They were teens while Sam and Dean are adults.
They do kill vampires , I suppose, but to me the show is so much more than the monster of the week.

It's the journey of the two brothers that I love,  and how they relate to the horrible and dangerous world they live in.

Supernatural to me is somewhat unique, I don't think you can really compare it to any other show.
It takes bits and pieces from different genres and moulds them into something new and I think that that is part of it's success; it has something for everyone.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, Landau and Marsters have SOOOOO much chemistry!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'd just be happy if James had his own new show in which he was a lead!

    ReplyDelete
  30. I completely agree! The first time I watched Angel I rewound the credits to make sure I'd read them correctly, couldn't believe parents would be cruel enough to call their child Charisma!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I think the only reason why Supernatural is being compared to the X-Files is that Kim Manners produced both shows. When it comes to the story, plot, characters etc., Supernatural cant be compared to the Xfiles at all. But it's nothing like buffy either.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I was in my 20s when Buffy came on, and I snubbed my nose at it because I thought I was too old, and then I got hooked.  I was in my 30s when Supernatural came on, and I snubbed my nose at it because I thought I was too old for it, and then I got hooked.  The cast are teens when Buffy starts, but it's not a teen drama.  It deals with life, relationships, family, social issues, depression, death, addiction, and evil - a lot like Supernatural.  The main group in Buffy are not related but they become family - as much as Bobby is family to Sam and Dean.  Try it or don't try it, but it's a lot deeper than what most people would guess from the title.

  33.  I'm sure that Buffy is a good show and if I had started to watch it when it first aired I would probably have enjoyed as much as anyone.

I don't know if going back and watching it now would be the same thing, but there are always re-runs on our tv so I might just take a look one of these days.

  37. Oh crap, so far we have gotten Mercedes McNab, Amy Acker and Amber Benson as far as i can recall, now we'll have Cordy and Spike???? Supernatural, I love you SO MUCH right now, I don't even care about the god!castiel crap now!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Cordelia and Spike together.  Now that's something I've got to see.  This seems almost too good to be true.  Love the combining of two of my favorite shows.  I don't suppose SMG could take a short break from Ringer and pop in as an affected townsperson.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Especially if he doesn't realize she's a witch in the beginning.

    ReplyDelete
  40. this is great! im a huge buffy fun and i adore Supernatural! hey anyone else think that they should make a Supernatural and Vampire Diaries crossover? it just popped to my head :DD

    ReplyDelete
  41. Don't forget Julie Benz! She was Layla in "Faith" during season 1!

    ReplyDelete
  42. They're different shows obviously, but I see similarities between Buffy and SPN in the tone, humor, irony, and style of dialogue.  Buffy is a character who grew up without a father, who loses her mother mid-series, and who develops a surrogate parent relationship with Giles.  Sam and Dean grow up without a mother, lose their father mid-series, and develop a surrogate parent relationship with Bobby.  Buffy, Sam and Dean try to balance a desire to lead normal lives with the burden of being responsible for saving people, and the world, over and over again.  They've both had Apocalypses. Buffy battled the source of all evil whereas the Sam and Dean battled the Mother of all monsters.  They have vampires, werewolves, monsters, witches, gods, etc.  They've all been brought back from the dead and went through a very dark depressive period afterward.  They both were diagnosed by psychiatrists who thought they were nuts.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Actually, I think it's a stage name... Sort of like Stephen Moyer's real name being Stephen Emery...

    ReplyDelete
  44. Can we just have James be yet another lover for one of her characters on Ringer? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  45. Now that Smidge is in the CW, I beg TPTB to pull all strings available to bring her to SPN for an ep. She could be a well seasoned hunter to impart some knowledage to the boys, maybe someone a lot like mary had she lived longer.

    ReplyDelete
  46. YESSSSS!! Result!! Jossverse meet Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Exactly how I feel! Buffy has made both laugh and cry just as many times as SPN! (Even though I have a bigger love for SPN).. :P The characters are great, and even though it took me some time to get into it, it is so worth watching!

    ReplyDelete
  48. There should have been a Spike spin-off series! xD
Angel got one, so why not Spike?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Too bad James and Joss have have a bit of a falling out... :(

  51. I wanna have a promo or something NOW!!! I usually stay away from spoilers like promo's and stuff like that, but this time, I will not be able to stay away!!! My heart is beating so fast!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Joss said something and James was insulted by it. I heard this second-hand from a Spuffy fansite, so I don't know exactly what was said.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Well, I'm not surprised. This is the same Joss who threw a fit when Charisma got pregnant and killed her off a season later when she was promised she wouldn't be.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Yeah... Joss still has some issues to work out. LOL - Doesn't make him any less of a visionary genius, though.

I know what you're doing, Sera. Trying to distract me with pretty faces... It might be working.

    ReplyDelete
  56. HE MUST HIT ON HER. She's like the dark queen of fantasy shows. Even on Veronica Mars she played a devious chick.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Just watch the first episode of season 2 of Fringe.
If that doesn't do it... well, that just sucks. :/

Also, while I agree SPN has built up its own mythos, BTVS went WAY beyond vampires... Honestly, it was groundbreaking the things they did with monsters in that show, like an episode devoted to demonic entities that stole the collective voices of an entire town one night so that no one can scream when they harvest the organs of the youth...

And while I'm a SPN fan first because it is my favorite show, but you're doing a great job of underselling a show that you haven't even seen before. Buffy was definitely more than monster of the week. Some of their plots are extremely similar.

For one where have you heard this before? A trusted friend that has been a resource of knowledge as well as awkward comedic relief suddenly becomes an enemy and threatens the world as we know it?

Castiel? Nope, the little Witch Willow did that...

Ok, here's another one... in the season 5 finale, the titular character literally falls into a vortex and dies to save the world. Only to return mysteriously the next season...

Sammy and the pit to hell? Noooo.... That's Buffy...dyin' for your sins, son.

Just a few things I thought I would point out.

  58. very exciting!! i think that there will be one more whedonite guest starring too! love the cross over with the guests!

  59. SPIKE SPIKE SPIKE!!!!  After the Winchester bros, he's my favorite TV character ever!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I wasn't that big a fan of Buffy (I liked it just enough to get all the way through Season 7 after "giving up" on the show two separate times), but I loved Spike (at least his Seasons 2, 3, and 7 versions). And Marsters was definitely able to show off some acting flexibility with his regular portrayal of Spike, his Season 7 crazy portrayal, his back story portrayals, and his Tabula Rasa portrayal, so I'm excited to see him.

I was never a big fan of Cordelia, but I liked Charisma enough on Veronica Mars to not be disappointed that she's making as appearance, though her being the episode's main monster is just a tad disappointing to me.

  64. This season is going to rock for sure !

    ReplyDelete
  65. "Bewitched" gone wrong? Neat idea. Can't wait to see the episode.

I wasn't a big Buffy-Verse fan and never watched all episodes, but Carpenter and Masters on SPN is a must see.

As for similarities between Buffy and Supernatural....hardly a surprise. Both shows are WB shows and back in those days a plot and layered well thought characters were essential.

    ReplyDelete
  66. This is really cool! Im not a big buffy buff (pauses over irony...) but I do kno my Angel, and Ive got to say this is conna b epic! I bet we get some humor out of all this... yay meta!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  67. the episode sounds awesome. I never watched Buffy (b/c I was in elementary school for most of its run and was afraid to watch it), but its cool that ppl from the show are going to be guest starring. I'm not a huge sci-fi/horror fan, but I absolutely love that Supernatural gets many of their guest stars from that genre

    ReplyDelete
  68. I agree with klutzy_girl, I've checked around and as far as I can tell, Charisma is her real name. Apparently (according to her IMDb page), she was named after a brand of Avon perfume!

    ReplyDelete
  69. OMG, this is going to be so much fun!

    ReplyDelete
  70. THIS IS SO EPIC!!!  First Jewel Straite from Firefly now James and Charisma from Buffy and Angel its like SPN is convergence of all best sci-fi supernatural shows!  THANKS SERA!!  CAN'T WAIT TO SEE THIS!  Also love the episode title lmao

    ReplyDelete
  71. this is just sooo friggin great!!! ı dont even know what the say!!! So AWESOME!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Dear Supernatural,

Are you trying to kill me by slowly having every actor from the Whedonverse guest star on your show?  You already made me like you more than my three favourite shows before this point, BtVS, AtS and Firefly.  I love you so.  Please don't make me cry.
    Ktksbye

    ReplyDelete
  73. Agreed. Drusilla and Spike is better than Cordelia and Spike as far as chemistry. And Juliet Landau has creepy mastered...

    ReplyDelete
  74. I had the same issue with Buffy. I loved some of the characters, but the plots sometimes drove me nuts. And Spike definitely was best in the seasons/ways you pointed out. I have to agree with your comment about Cordelia/Charisma, also. I'm determined not to pass judgement until the actual episode, though. She may be surprising...

    ReplyDelete
  75. OMFG!!!! awwwwwww can't wait for this episode :D
