Hip, Hip, hurrah! So happy to hear this. It's nice to have some appreciation from the CW at last. I hope it goes on at least as long as Smallville.
I have noticed that outside of Supernatural's fans there is not really a lot of love for Supernatural.
The " more important " experts on tv matters tend to turn up their noses at it in favour of the various other tv series considered, for some reason, superior. At least that's the impression I get reading around the sites. .
This guy is so awesome! I love the new president already. Giving us an extra episode of Supernatural AND wanting us to go beyond Season 7. Mr. Pedowitz, you are awesome! *thumbs up* I am so glad that Dawn left (or was fired from what I heard <.< *cough cough*)
To those of you who are whining and complaining about wanting the show to end? Here's an idea, stop watching it and stop trying to ruin it for the fans who still enjoy the show just because YOU can't stand it anymore.
it took almost a decade of work for the first big story, the 5 years plan. Starting as an idea of the journalist in a road trip, slowly changing into familly/hunting, many years before the pilot, than many pilot scripts, al very different, and add 5 years of work between S1 to 5 to finish...that's almost a decade for that story
And now you wanted the Season 6, made in a couple of months, to be just as good?? It was impossible. But, now that they have work more, more time to prepare the new story after season 5, the season 7 can only be better than the season 6 that was a bit rush
Ok, so think that this finally confirms our hopes. This is fantastic news. :) That means, the writers can plan season 8 without worrying about if it will happen! So, barring a collapse in ratings, that's a pretty huge sign that season 8 is going to happen.
I think much like some of season 1, they were finding their footing again, and I think that if they have the chance to think about season 8 now rather than at the last minute (like half way through season 5 when the CW renewed it suddenly for a sixth season) it will end up being a more rewarding story next season.
After all these years, Supernatural finally has a champion within theCW with Mark Pedowitz?? Wow. Finally.
I've been saying this for a long time and I gladly repeat it: Supernatural does have the means to last for 10 seasons if Jensen and Jared are willing to stay that long with the show.
All the show needs is a showrunner who is comitted to both brothers Winchester and a team of writers who is able to keep the balance between embracing the old, "traditional" stuff and infusing some new storylines that keep the show fresh and interesting.
Not an easy task, I hope Sera and the new writers are up to it.
I don't understand how fans of a show can be happy if that show is cancelled!
Once that happens there are no new episodes to love or to criticise just a pitiful rehashing of glory days and seasons gone by! It would be more honest to say that one is becoming bored with that show and doesn't care if it's cancelled.
As long as a show is on the air it can always improve and update itself , but once cancelled it's gone! I love Supernatural and want it to go on as long as the actors and writers and fans do. When one of these want to end it, fair enough.
Look at CSI, Law and Order etc, etc. They have been on for ages even although they serve up the same stories week after week. I don't see why Supernatural can't continue for another 2 or 3 seasons too.
Bad example, man. Smallville became more convoluted as the seasons went on. The longer the series doesn't mean the more awesome the show in my book. I rather the show uses S7 to wrap things up for the show instead of it being pushed on for more seasons than it should have. Braver to know when to than to drag on out of habit.
Smallville became convoluted because it was a prequel.
There was nothing more they could do to avoid getting to the Superman stage so they had to chase their tails round and round.
Supernatural is not a prequel and can look serenely to the future. The actors are the right ages for the parts they play and don't have to look younger than they are, as the 35(?) year old Welling had to.
I think Supernatural has enough stories to tell to make it to a tenth season. Ideally we would have a new 5 year plan at this time and it could be wrapped up in the tenth year just like it was in the 5th.
He's the head of The CW. Of course he wants the show to see a continued success. He probably feels that way about most, if not all of the networks programs. I know that he's also a fan of the show but the entire point of his job is to get the network to crank out hit TV shows. If he's doing his job, he's going to advocate for all his shows the same way.
I agree it should go out on top. Nothing is worse than a series that used to be great until it was milked dry. (X-Files and to a lesser extent Buffy - I'm looking at you.) However, I think Supernatural has a long way to go before it gets to that point.
So? Dawn Ostroff was also head of the CW once and she never did this for Supernatural, not once even though it was a hit show. She treated this show like a redheaded stepchild.
If they are following the original pattern than season 7 has the potential to be everyone's favorite season much like season 2 was excellent. I'd love to see them get the season 2 mix that was nicely balanced between standalones and engaging mytharc.
I think the CW is going to start rebranding their image away from a network for teenage girls, which is its current reputation. While Secret Circle seems aimed directly at the teen crowd, Ringer and Hart of Dixie definitely seem to skew older. I'm hoping that in trying to get a more rounded lineup the CW realizes what it has in Supernatural. It not only skews older but also male.
I'm certainly feeling more confident about Supernatural's future than I ever have before. I hope the ratings remain steady or hey, even improve. Too bad I don't have a Neilsen box. We'd be having Supernatural viewing parties even Friday.
The fact that Pedowitz wants another season and that Jared, Jensen, and Sera have all said they are committed to another season if asked makes me giddy for the future. Add to that the fact that the CW seems to like announcing and building up promotion for final seasons, which has not been said of Supernatural, I think we are looking good for at least a season 8. Ratings will tell obviously but in 7 years I've never been so hopeful before.
That may be your opinion, but it's not the opinion of everyone else. A huge chunk of fandom are excited and happy about this news. Your opinion doesn't make up the whole fandom.
Dear Dahne I feel I have to call you out a little on the adjective " avid" that you used although I know you were referring in a general way.
I don't consider myself an "avid fan" but I am definitely happy to hear that the show could continue for more seasons.
The stories are interesting, the family dynamics too so I don't see why it should have to end, ( ratings and the actors wanting to leave etc.etc. excluded. ) There aren't many shows on tv that I like so to have one of them cancelled wouldn't make me too happy.
By the way we got the first two eps. of White Collar on our local Tv last week and I really enjoyed it, so I've got my recorder on for the next two tonight,
I like this I like this very very very very very much ...I can't imagine my life without Supernatural lol ! I'm am liking this guy very much !!
Obviously we don't want Supernatural to fizzle out, we want it to go out on top & with such a talented team of writers as well as cast and crew, going past a season 7 would be AWESOME ! As long as the J's are up for it i hope Spn goes for a while longer !
I like this purely since up until now the CW hasn't really been so supportive publicly but I don't want a S8 if S7 is terrible...I don't want Supernatural to go down that road of having tons of so-so seasons
This is great news - finally someone who 'gets' our show is in charge. I think I may have a little crush on Mark Pedowitz and I've never even laid eyes on the man. Based on the 2nd half of season 6, Sera & the team have their groove on now, so I'm expecting great things of S7 and beyond.
An awesome piece of news in otherwise craptastic week!
Taking longer to make something doesn't automatically make it better. If that were true, most first novels would be the author's best. In fact, waiting too long can often spoil something. Some of Hollywood's worst disasters were years in the making. Supernatural is a show like The X-Files, with a format that can extend indefinitely. What ruined the later years of The X-Files, more than dragging out the nonsensical alien plot, was David Duchovny's departure in season seven. Supernatural doesn't have to face that issue so far.
You're under no obligation to continue watching the show just because it's still on. I'm not saying that you have to shut up and take it if you have criticisms, just that its continued existence on the TV schedule doesn't mean you can't cancel it from your personal watching schedule if it no longer satisfies you. I've lost interest in many perfectly good shows before they ended, just because I did. It didn't make them bad. It just meant I'd moved on. Sometimes, I went back and watched the rest later, but I usually didn't. Long-running shows lose old and gain new audience all the time.
As for this news, I do think Pedowitz likes SPN, but his predecessor made similar noises, even though she hated SPN, because its success was helping save her network's bacon. I'd like to see some more advertising and other concrete signs of this new network head's love.
No, it wasn't impossible. The writers just had to make Season 6's mythology mesh with the past seasons' mythologies as if Season 6's mythology had been in place since the beginning of the show (just as was the case for Seasons 2-5 to various extents being in place back in Season 1).
However, instead of Season 6 creating a new mythology that fit with the past seasons' mythologies, they created a new mythology that didn't mesh that well with the old while also treating Season 6 as a sequel to the first five-season arc rather than writing it as if Season 6 was the always intended natural progression of the show. They viewed the five-season arc as Part 1 of the story when they should have just written it so that it appeared to be a six+ season arc from the beginning (which would have lessened the disparity and seeming departures from the show that we got in Season 6), and they could have done that if they had wanted to.
I don't know... Season 2 (along with 6) seemed to be the least balanced to me. Season 2 had entirely too many standalones. Only the first and last (two) episodes were mythologically significant where Azazel was concerned. Then we got two episodes dealing with the psychic children which dealt with Azazel's plan. And finally we got one episode that set up a slightly mythologically important piece for Season 5. Every other episode was standalone, roadhouse-related (which was pretty much Season 2 specific), or cop/FBI-related which weren't directly related to the mythology.
So Season 2 only had 6/22 episodes that were mythology related. That's less than any other season (apart from maybe Season 3, but percentage-wise it's still less than Season 3). (And Season 6 had the opposite problem with all but like three episodes being mythology-related.)
Does it really matter how a show goes out, when it's finished it's finished.
If to one person an ending seems weak, to another it will seem like the best ending ever.
There is no way that we will all be in agreement on that.
I loved Lost, I loved the mystery of it all, and really there was no other way it could have ended. When I think of X-files, the ending is the last thing that I dwell on, I think, instead, of all the good, interesting episodes that I watched during the series.
I'm sure a lot of people loved Swan Song in Supernatural but I hated it, and I'm very glad that it wasn't the series finale. Whatever else they think up to finish the series could not be any worse ( I hope!!!)
There's no reason why there can't be good stories as far as the Supernatural universe is concerned, it comprends magic, religion, monsters etc., plenty for creative minds to chew on!
If the writers manage to keep turning out good ideas, the ratings hold steady and the cast are happy to continue, I don't see why not, regards
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Yes, I already love this new guy! So glad Dawn left.
ReplyDeleteKeep Castiel on the show then :)
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely liking this guy. I bet this guy wouldn't bump supernatural back a week at short notice just to add a few viewers to other shows.
ReplyDeleteLove it. I just hope he will realise if the show seems to be needing an ending so they won't drag it out for 12 seasons
ReplyDeleteI love this guy. I think the show can do 10 seasons just like smallville.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a plan to me!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't know. I love Supernatural but Season 6 was very hit and miss.
ReplyDeleteWe want it too! :D

Yes please. =D
ReplyDeleteFinally some1 at CW wants more than the stereotypical teen drama. I hope the show goes on after this season.
ReplyDeleteThen stop watching it and find something else.

He is a definite improvement from Ostroff. First off, he knows how to please avid fans. Here's hoping the ratings allow the show to continue.
ReplyDeleteHa! Yeah that was a bad move on their part. Especially since Vampire Diaries did well enough on its own.

ReplyDeleteI sooo love the new boss and I sooo do not miss Dawn!!!
ReplyDeleteSupernatural can run for 10 years... is like Hellblazer. There is always gonna be monsters tu hunt.
ReplyDeleteI think we should send him a fruit basket instead. :-P
ReplyDeleteIf we get equal Supernatural time in the official CW fall teaser this year, I'm going to have a crush on him too. At least we know he has good taste.
ReplyDeleteBut then he'd think he was Death...
ReplyDeletegood news for Supernatural
ReplyDeleteHA! How about a cookie bouquet instead then?
ReplyDeleteMe too, Mark! :)
ReplyDeleteWho doesn't?

ReplyDeletei want that too but it sounds like he wont be on the show beyond episode 2 by the sounds of it
ReplyDeleteI knew I like the new boss. That's encouraging.
ReplyDeleteI hope the show lasts as long as Smallville did at least.
ReplyDeleteWhich is why we're all happy that Mr. Pedowitz is seemingly adequate at his new job, and therefore amazing in the eyes of the SPN fans. lol
ReplyDeletei like this guy!
ReplyDeleteAll I hope for is that it goes out as strongly as it came in, I don't need another Lost or X-Files.

ReplyDeleteI know right finally someone that appreciates Supernatural
ReplyDeleteI know it is about time someone is appreciating supernatural who has some pull with C.W.
ReplyDeleteI like this guy!
ReplyDelete
