We are almost done with part one of the episode contest. Only 2 more polls to go. Thanks to everyone who participated. Looking back at the 19th episode poll, the winner was Mommy Dearest. It received 113 votes for 28%. In second was Hammer of the Gods with 103 votes and 25%. Things look good for What is and What Should Never Be in the 20th episode poll right now too. Today we have the penultimate episodes. In all honesty, I usually don't care for the penultimates but love the finales. My ranking here is more difficult than past polls. Also remember that the last two episodes of season 3 will competing against the last two episodes of the other seasons. So instead of being the favorite 21st episode, it is technically the favorite penultimate episode.
Salvation - The best part about Salvation was the previouslies. Sad but true. Mostly because the previouslies were the first time we got the road so far to Carry On Wayward Son and that rocked. It also started a beloved tradition. This episode gave us Sam rescuing Rosie and Dean's confrontation of John, but it also gave us more of the Weepy Winchesters and of course John. The whole John story line was lame and far fetched. We really did not need to see John get captured. Just tell us he did and let us concentrate on the Winchester brothers.
All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1 - Sam died. While it may be the last part of the episode, it is the most memorable. We did get to see Andy again, but then he died. We got to see Ava again, but she turned evil. We got to meet Jake, but he's better in Leverage anyway. The setting was awesome, so we saw it again in Frontierland. Mostly though, we finally got to see part of YED's plan at the expense of retconning Mary. This was an important episode.
Time is on My Side - Doc Benton did not interest me although he was certainly the most insane person ever on the show. The idea that Sam thought Dean would ever go for the Doc Benton Immortality Plan seemed way out of character. Best part for me was Bela. I'm not sure we needed the Bela back story but her story line needed closure and RUFUS (yeah) was introduced because of her. This is the third split episode (I'm seeing a theme here) where we really didn't need half of the story.
When the Levee Breaks - There is much to love in this episode if you love angst, but for me this episode has 3 strikes. 1. Very emoangsty. 2. Evil Mary reappears and I prefer her as a saint. 3. It's at the end of season 4 where everything escalates the brother rift. I hated this plot line most of all and everything about this episode was made to highlight it. Plus, we have suspicious Cas letting Sam out of the panic room and getting Anna angelnapped. Everything in this episode put the characters in the worst possible light and left us hopeless. Despair is not how I like feeling when an episode ends.
Two Minutes to Midnight - Again the episode is split and again I only like parts. Pestilence is the worst of the Horseman. Vile in a way that makes me want to vomit. I could have done without the beginning of the episode. I totally loved Bobby and Sam working together to take on the Croatoan zombies. I loved Crowley as always and Bobby walking after the deal was sweet. Still, hands down the best part was Death. Now when I get Chicago-style pizza, I think of Dean and him having a slice.
Let It Bleed - I like Lisa and Ben so I liked this episode more than most. I enjoyed Demon Lisa and my heart broke at the sight of Ben shooting the gun. Quite frankly, I was also excited that there was action in it after a dry spell. I didn't mind the memory wipe ending as much as most, but I do think Dean should have talked to Lisa about it. I didn't care either way about the Lovecraft part and I was done with Cas by this point. I loved that Dr. V. was from Purgatory and Balthy questioned Cas, but I am thoroughly sick of torture SPN-style, no matter who it is. (For the record, this time it is Bobby and the brothers split. I certainly hope they don't keep the 21st episode split pattern in season 7. It's a bit annoying.)

This one is hard for me because I tend to not like penultimate episodes as a whole (probably the split thing). There are great pieces in all of them but there are also parts that seem rushed or unimportant. Mostly I think they overdose on the emotional in order to allow the finale to be mostly action with the exception of season 5 where it was reversed and the emotional episode was the finale. Generally I think the penultimate episodes are all pretty equal in my opinion of them. The hardest for me is ranking #1 and 2, which switch depending on my mood.
ReplyDelete1. Two Minutes to Midnight - by the smallest of margins because of Death
2. All Hell Breaks Loose, part 1 - by far the best in terms of mytharc
3. Let It Bleed
4. Salvation
5. When the Levee Breaks
6. Time is On My Side
This was difficult just because none of the eps were better or worse in my mind! Like you Dahne, I have things that I like or don't in all of them! I voted for the "Lisa & Ben" emotion!!
ReplyDeleteTwo Minutes to Midnight actually gave me chills the first time I watched it and was just as good on a second viewing. All Hell Breaks Loose was bit of a distant second for me. I'm just not a big fan of the episodes where any of the main characters, especially the brothers, die.
ReplyDelete6. Time Is On My Side - Didn't care for it at all. Kinda boring, really.
ReplyDelete5. Salvation - It has Meg in it and a lot of violence. Still, meh.
4. All Hell Breaks Loose, Pt 1. - First half of the episode was great, second half not so much.
3. When The Levee Breaks - Sam's hallucinations were grating but the rest of the ep. was decent.
2. Let It Bleed - Good, solid episode. Crowley, Lovecraft, & Balty = win.
1. Two Minutes to Midnight - Pestilence, Death, violence & brotherly acceptance. Good stuff.
1. Two Minutes to Midnight
ReplyDelete2. Let it Bleed
3. All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1
4. When The Levee Breaks
5. Salvation
6. Time is on My Side
Well I'll be...
ReplyDeleteWe picked the same #1 and we also disliked the same ep. making it dead last.
I've seen the first thee so far, and I order them All Hell Breaks Loose first, Time is on my side second and Salvation third.
ReplyDeleteI found the end of season one in retrospect one of the weaker end of season build ups. The finale is great though...
I am going to agree with you Dahne and say 2 Minutes to Midnight because of the introduction of Death who is a fascinating character, barely angelic Castiel saving the boys from Pestilence and securing the ring, the attack on the warehouse which was a nice action sequence with Sam/Bobby/Cas and the Bobby/Crowley deal which had both poignant and funny moments and even got me choked up when Bobby was unexpectedly able to walk at the end. This is the best kind of Supernatural episode. It hits you with every conceivable emotion. It scares you, it makes you fear for the characters, scream YES! at the TV when they succeed unexpectedly like when Cas arrives. It makes you ache for Dean when he worries for Sam and his plan, and have high anxiety as Bobby negotiates with Crowley. It makes you laugh unexpectedly with pithy insults and then makes you feel a crazy mix of gratitude and wariness when Bobby can walk. What a show! No wonder I'm addicted, I'm an adrenaline junkie and this show triggers all kinds of fight or flight responses in me. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! That may be the first time we agree regarding Supernatural. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou must hate the finales then. There is always someone dying in those.
ReplyDeleteI'd agree about AHBL also. I enjoyed the beginning mystery better. Crowley is always made of win. I loved him on the phone with Dean in LIB
ReplyDeleteI thought Devil's Trap was one of the better finales but Salvation was one of my least favorites of the season. Too bad it continued that way more or less for me.
ReplyDeleteSeason 5 is the only season where I liked the penultimate episode better than the finale. I think because they reversed tradition and made it the action heavy episode. I thought maybe they packed too much into this episode but you are right. There is something for everyone here, no matter what emotion you are looking for. I cheered too when Bobby walked again.
ReplyDeletehad to go with all hell breaks loose part one
ReplyDeleteand epic episode from the very first minute when sam get kidnapped.
i loved andy so to see him again was awesome (even though he was killed which made me very upset)
i watched this episode after seeing seasons 3 and 4 so i knew sam was going to die at one point during the finale but i never expected it to be then. i did not see it coming and was comletely shocked and it ws awesome. i just loved it and it is probably the penultimate episode that got me the most excited for the finale.
i'm trying to rank the rest of the episodes but i'm finising it near impossible. i like them all but i don't think any of them are all too special.
next would probably be a tie between when the levee breaks and two minutes to midnight
although i hated how the brothers fell apart in season 4, i still really liked this episode. i thought it was really tense and had a great build up.
i loved the four horsmen and wihs they had done more with them but death was by far the best. i loved how he was casually eating pizza in chicago as all these people around him were dying. and how he was so terrifying, it takes a lot to make dean scared of something but death did it perfectly. i just thought this episode was a bit rushed.
tied next is the rest of the episodes, salvation, let it bleed and time is on my side
i agree dahne, the best part of salvation is carry on wayward son, that song is epic and it started one of the best supernatural traditions ever. but i find the rest of the episode is pretty unmemorable
let it bleed. all in all, it was a really good episode. i was just completely sick of lisa and ben by that time. which i really hated because i was all for it at the start of season 6. i don't know what happened but i just gave up caring about that relationship by the end
time is on my side. wasn't too bad but wasn't amazing either. doc benton was terrifying, when he was trying to scoop out sams eye (if i'm remembering that scene correctly) had me gripping the bottom of my chair. i loved that they couldn't kill him so they buried him alive. i was one of the few people, form what i've gathered, who liked bela so i was kinda sad to see her go but i thought it was done well and create a nice segway into the season finale by showing dean's fear of dying and the hellhounds.
excited for the season finale although i'm not sure yet how i'm gonna pick who to vote for. it will probably end up with me flipping a coin between all hell breaks loose 2 and swan song but lets wait and see
All Hell Breaks Loose
ReplyDeleteCrowley was great in LIB. I would have more strongly considered it for #1 if it weren't for Ben and Lisa's appearance. Their story arc had already gone off the rails by then and their part of the plot in LIB had a real "let's get this over with" feel to it. Which, not coincidentally, was the same way I felt.
ReplyDeleteDahne, this is a tough poll! it's a toss up for me between all hell breaks loose pt 1 and when the levee breaks...both made me sob
ReplyDelete6. Time is On My Side. The idea that Sam would ever even consider using Doc Benton's immortality formula was just plain wrong.
ReplyDeleteOn the plus side we met Rufus Turner. And:Rufus: 'You do her ear?'
Dean: 'Hey man, I'll try anything once, but I don't know, that sounds uncomfortable.'5. Salvation. It was just a non event for me. And it had John in it. On the plus side ...ummmm....... Carry on Wayward Son - can't even remember a decent one liner.4. When The Levee Breaks. I still haven't forgiven Cas for letting Sam out of the panic room. On the plus side:Dean: 'How long's this going to go on?'Bobby: 'Hang on, let me look it up in my demon detox manual.'
and:
Bobby: 'Hello. ...Suck dirt and die, Rufus. You call me again, I'll kill you.'
3. Let It Bleed. Decent action. I was heart broken for Dean - I cry when they cry. LOL
Plus:
Bobby: 'Hi, glad to meet you. Bobby Singer. Paranoid bastard.'
2. All Hell Breaks Loose part 1. Awesome episode. Everything Dahne said.
Plus:
Dean: 'Don't forget the extra onions this time!'Sam: 'I'm the one who has to ride in the car with your extra onions.'Dean: 'Hey, see if they've got any pie. Bring me some pie. I love me some pie.'
1. Two Minutes to Midnight. Pestilence was fudgin' REVOLTING. Death was fudgin' AWESOME.
Sam & Bobby together were AWESOME.
Plus;
Dean: 'What about Chicago?'Death: 'I suppose it can stay. I like the pizza.'
I really have to find an alternative word for awesome.
All Hell Breaks Loose Pt. 1 wins out for me on this because I loved the bringing together of all of Azazel's little experiments and I tend to like episodes focused on Sam more because the show started with him as the focus more.
ReplyDeleteSo my list:
1. All Hell Breaks Lose Pt. 1
2. Two Minutes to Midnight - Cas' return, 2 Horsemen in one episode, and awesome conversation with Death
3. Let It Bleed - I actually liked Lisa/Ben and while it sucked they had to go, it was nice they both lived
4. Time is On My Side - One of the few who liked Bela and appreciated closure
5. When the Levee Breaks - Interesting I guess
6. Salvation - Don't even really remember much about it
I always like when there is an episode I either truly love or truly dislike because at least then I can rank something right away. Unfortunately on this round, the closest I have is Time is on My Side, which was pretty much going to go in last for me without much thinking about it.
ReplyDeletePenultimate episodes tend to have more sobbing than other numbers in general in my opinion. well I guess finales sometimes too. They are all so emotional.
ReplyDeleteThere really is no snark in Salvation. It's a humor waste land - another reason I was disappointed in it. The bright spot for me was Dean calling John out with the "Call you?" speech. Also the Impala talk where Sam is saying thanks and Dean doesn't want an "if we die speech" reminded me a bit of "No chick flick moments" just wordier.
ReplyDeleteIt was great to finally get answers about the Special Children and there were a lot of twists revealed that made it one of the strongest mytharc episodes the show has ever had.
ReplyDelete1. Two Minutes to Midnight -- LOVED THIS EPISODE. And probably for the exact reasoning Dahne dislikes the nasty stuff, but I say it adds some actual oomph to the plot because I hate it when something like a damn horseman of the apocalypse hardly lives up to his name...
ReplyDelete2. All Hell Breaks Loose Pt. 1 -- The second part of this episode I think was my favorite episode for years. This brought all the special kids together and it was awesome.
3. When the Levee Breaks -- I love this one for the Sam detox scenes.
4. Salvation -- A really good story for the family, Meg, etc.
5. Let it Bleed -- I enjoyed it, but it still felt bleh here and there.
6. Time is On My Side -- Nothing against it, it's just a standalone with a really sad ending tacked on. (Poor Bela!)
All Hell Breaks To Loose part I is the best for me... for sure !
ReplyDeleteThe rest was just ok.
Two Minutes to Midnight - This ep was a great 'heros prep to head into a loosing battle' ep. All Hell Breaks Lose Pt. 1 - I struggled with wether or not to make this number one. But, in the end, it's part 2 of this story that make this ep my absolute favorite ep of the series. And that's mostly to Dean and Jensen Ackles' performance. I was heartbroken and riveted.Let It Bleed - Good bits. Good performances. But getting rid of Ben and Lisa was, to me like angst emoticon eps are to Dahne. :-) IMHO, given they were determined to get rid of these two characters the memory wipe was a cop out, again IMHO.Time is On My Side - This show has never scared me or even really creeped me out. This guy was *freaky*. Just….When the Levee Breaks - The "visitations" weren't my favorite thingSalvation - no issues with this ep. I just landed in this spot
ReplyDeleteAll Hell Breaks Loose Part 1 - I actually thought this was better than part 2.Salvation - A truly chilling opening grab, and it really doesn't let up.Two Minutes to Midnight - I felt they dealt with pestilence a little too easily. When the Levee Breaks - Sam has Mommy issues.Let it Bleed - I feel like i'm one of the few who liked Lisa and Ben, this was not my favourite ending.Time is On My Side - An average episode to begin with, let alone a penultimate one.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Pestilence was dispatched far too easily.
ReplyDeleteAHBL part 2 is by far my favorite of the two. Not for Dean's heartbreaking break down though. Instead, it's the first episode that truly showed Supernatural's guts. Killing off YED and the main story arc at the end of season 2 was truly inspired.
ReplyDeleteHa! I know you love the gore. I can't wait to see Death back again in season 7. Bonus - he's Death so even though I like him, I feel relatively safe that they won't kill him off like all my other favorites. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt really is just a toss-up between Two Minutes to Midnight and All Hell Breaks Loose, Part One. I had to go with All Hell Breaks Loose, Part One though, just everything about the way the episode was done gave me the chills. AND seeing Sam die nearly killed me. I totally lost it, it was really the only one that got a huge emotional response out of me. When the Levee Breaks and Let it Bleed were great episodes but it just didn't hit home the same way. It just didn't sit right for some reason I can't quite put my finger on. AND I really couldn't get into Time Is On My Side at all. I just overall didn't like the episode. I guess I expected a lot more out of it for that season arc. It was just a letdown all the way around.
ReplyDelete1. All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1
ReplyDelete2. Two Minutes To Midnight
3. Salvation
4. Let It Bleed
5.Time Is On My Side
6. When The Levee Breaks
Mine would have to be, Two Minutes to Midnight. My favourite second last episode
ReplyDeleteFor me, AHBL. The opening scene when Sam disappears in a diner in the middle of nowhere was one of the scariest moments of Supernatural ever. And from there the action just kept coming. We saw them waking up in Fronteirland, the return of Andy and Eva, an appearance and some answers from YED, and then of course Sam's death. I liked AHBL1 better than AHBL2 because I have a number of issues with the graveyard part, but I'll talk more about that in the next poll.
ReplyDeleteSecond would be Two Minutes to Midnight, mostly because of Death in a pizza joint.
Third would be When the Levee Breaks. I loved the Sam's hallucinations in the panic room. We found out more about what was going on in his head in that one episode than I think we've learned in the rest of the series. What I didn't like was the fight between Sam and Dean later in the episode.
Fourth is Let It Bleed. I didn't like the Lisa and Ben part, but liked, no scratch that, was interested in the interactions between Cas and Dean and the Purgatory/Elle part.
Fifth would be Salvation because of the Meg/John scenes, and last would be Time on My Side.
All Hell Breaks Loose - part 1
ReplyDeleteVoted Time Is On My Side
ReplyDelete1. Two Minutes to Midnight
ReplyDelete2. Let it Bleed
3. All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1
4. When The Levee Breaks
5. Salvation
6. Time is on My Side
1. Two Minutes to Midnight - I didn't care for Pestilence, but I love that we got Crowley & Death. I like Sam, Bobby, & Cas fighting together.
ReplyDeleteDeath: (concerning Lucifer) I'm more powerful than you can process and I'm enslaved to a bratty child having a tantrum.
2. AHBL 1 - I liked learning about YED's plan for his 'special kids' and I liked Andy.
Sam: Andy, you still with me, or what?Andy: Give me a minute, I'm still working through "Demons are real."
3. Let it Bleed - Again, we get Crowley. Dr. Visyak is from Purgatory was a interesting twist. I am still not sure how I feel about the Lisa & Ben memory wipe. I understood the why, but it doesn't sit right with me.
Crowley: Your chocolate's been in my peanut butter for far too long.
4. Salvation - I don't like John Winchester sooo.... I did like Meg though, is that wrong?
Meg: Well, I’ve lied... a lot. I’ve stolen. I’ve lusted. And the other day I met this man – a nice guy, you know? And we had a really good chat...sort of like this. Then I slit his throat and ripped his heart out through his chest. (her eyes turn black) Does that make me a bad person?
5. When the Levee Breaks - I did not like the character portrayals here. Dean acting like his dad. Mary being creepy. Cas being sneaky and letting Sam out of the panic room. Sam the demon blood junkie. Bobby was the only one that seemed 'right'.
Bobby: Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but you willingly signed up to be the angels' b****? I'm sorry. You prefer "sucker"?
6. Time in on My Side - Doc Benton just freaked me out. Sam wanting to make Dean like Doc Benton also freaked me out. The eyeball scene grossed me out. But I did like Rufus.
Dean: Oh, hiya, doc. Wakey, wakey, eggs and bac-y.
I easily could have gone with All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1, but then I remembered that I sobbed like a baby at the end and still sob after every viewing of that episode. That said, I went with Two Minutes to Midnight mainly for the Dean/Crowley/Death stuff
ReplyDelete1-All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1-one of my most favourite episodes ever, it never fails to make me cry
ReplyDelete2-When The Levee Breaks-brilliant, the angst, the acting, everything-I for one didn't mind the brothers rift in season 4. One of my top 20 best episodes ever.3-Salvation-loved this episode, the three Winchesters working together, family angsting it was perfect4-Time Is On My Side-this one creeped me the hell out and made me sad all at the same time, I could feel Sam's desperation as Dean's deal loomed ever closer and Bella, poor Bella she was a bitch but at least we knew she had reason to be, she was kinda tragic in the end5-Two Minutes To Midnight-a major let down, this episode was hyped up quite a bit but for me failed to deliver, it wasn't bad it just wasn't brilliant where as the previous 4 years the penultimate episode had really delivered, amped up the tension and the angst. All this episode did as highlight how much Sam is a plot device and his thoughts and feelings dont really matter-he was about to throw himself in to the cage (the next episode) and all we got was how Dean felt about that. It was like Dean and Bobby suddenly realised that Sam was a hunter and a good man who had been saving people alongside them since he was a kid. 6-Let It Bleed-absolutely boring, I ended up turning out for most of it and I cant for the life of me remember anything of any importance or interest happening in the episode. Not one I'll be watching again
Amongst these, the one I liked least was,
ReplyDelete5 ) When the Levee Breaks
I hated the state that Sam was in in the panic room and I am really tired of him always getting punished for everything he does. He never gets anything easy.
It was also here that I started to dislike Castiel.
I couldn't believe that it was he who had opened the door to the panic room betraying Sam, and Dean too.
For me it's one of the most depressing episodes of the series.
4) Two Minutes to MIdnight.
This episode had two sides to it for me.
I liked the virus idea, the little bit of Sam heroism, the meeting of Dean with Death and the presence of Crowley who is fantastic.
I hated the rest.
I hated that the idea of Sam sacrificing himself was agreed to rather quickly by all. I really didn't see any one trying to talk him out of it ( excluding Dean )
It felt that they considered the sending of Sam to Hell for eternity not such a great problem, seeing that he had always been a trouble-maker anyway!!!
I did not like Bobby's little speech to Dean about whether "he was more afraid of losing the war or his brother" Rather a silly question in my book.
Then what was it with the gallons of Demon blood, wasn't he the perfect vessel for Lucifer?
Poor Sam it shamed him even more having to drink that near the others.
Did Adam have to drink Angel blood to contain Michael, I wonder?
3 ) Time Is On My Side
Apart from the boys arguing, I quite liked this episode.
There was a lot going on; Sam had his story-line rescuing the girl and falling into the hands of the nefarious doctor, while Dean got to meet and interact with Bela and the great Rufus.
I know it seems strange that Sam would go with the immortality solution, but by now he was freaking out and was ready to consider anything to save Dean.
2) Salvation
The first time I watched it I really enjoyed it.
I'm not a fan of John but I liked his confrontation with Meg.
Sometimes I feel that our appreciation of the season 1and 2 episodes are a little clouded by just having seen the more recent ones, and we tend to forget what we felt the very first time we saw them.
1 ) All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1
What can I say, it is a perfect episode.
Everything is in the right place at the right time.
It's adventurous, moving, creepy and Sammy's death in Dean's arms is unbeatable. Gets my vote!
Yep, this one is hard. I totally agree with you, Dahne, these episodes are more or less equal (besides Time Is on My Side, which I sincerely dislike), most of them are decent, but I wouldn't call any of them amazing or mindblowing. It was really hard to decide my ranking, but here it goes:
ReplyDelete1. Let It Bleed - I chose it over AHBL mostly because of the awesomeness of characters of Crowley and Balthazar. Love both to pieces. I also really enjoyed watching Bobby and his investigation and I find it really cool that Ellie turned out to be a creature from purgatory. Turns out "monsters" can also be pretty sweet. I liked it that in a way, Cas was still Cas in this episode. He still cared for Dean deeply. I am also among those who really loved Lisa and Ben and really cried when saw how their storyline ended. That "who are you?" from Ben was one of the saddest moments ever on this show for me. So yeah, it was a pretty cool episode.
2. All Hell Breaks Loose 1 - I am not a fan of the psychic children storyline, but the episode was still really good. We found out about the demon blood in Sam's veins. The little girl demon was a continuation of the early SPN's great horror feel. And then Sam died. I am a terrible sucker for all Dean's "watch out for Sammy" lines, so the last scenes of this episode is definitely one of the most emotional ones ever.
3. Two Minutes to Midnight - I loved many things about this episode, mostly the humour parts with Cas the almost human and of course the Bobby-Crowley deal. I loved Death. But then again, this is the end of season 5. The heaviness of those last episodes is just unbearable for me. Way too depressing.
4. Salvation - just another episode, I'd say. Nothing special about it, besides Meg. I really liked that blonde actress (can't remember the name), she knew how to make a girl demon kick-ass and creepy. But then there was John and he was still a jerk ("when something like this happens, you call"?! and then Dean showed him his crap and his reaction was like: "oh, fair enough" WTH?).
5. When the Levee Breaks - for me, Sam's hallucinations were totally pointless. And plus, Cas was freshly brainwashed and a jerk-like heaven soldier again. And I do not like Genevieve's Ruby. However, I do like the boys' confrontation scene. I know, a Dean girl inside me speaking :P I know SPN is all about the boys being together etc., but at that point, I actually liked the drama.
6. Time Is on My Side - by far the worst episode out of these. The idea itself was horrible and yes, most of the episode was totally pointless. I don't even remember ever rewatching it, thus I don't recall many details. But it was bad. Actually, season 3 really went downhill after Jus in Bello. Like, REALLY.
lol maybe they're making the penultimates weaker on purpose, so we can enjoy the awesomness of the finales even more? ;P
ReplyDeleteI voted for Salvation. I appreciate a lot of good stuff in the other penultimate episodes but each of them has also something that I dislike.
ReplyDeleteI have rewatched Salvation and just noticed that Azazel was quite stupid setting fire in the nurseries of his chosen children. The most probable outcome would be that the babies would die by the flames.
you didn't rank Let It Bleed, have you not seen it yet?
ReplyDeleteabout the demon blood in TMTM - he didn't drink it to be a better vessel for Lucifer, he drank it because demon blood was making him stronger and he needed it to be able to take on Lucifer (i.e. take control inside the vessel) and make him jump into the pit. Remember Lucifer was an angel, not a demon.
having said that, I didn't like that part either.
Sam didn't drink that demon blood until Swan Song. We didn't even see the gallons of demon blood until Swan Song...
ReplyDeleteThat part was in Swan Song, not TMTM.
ReplyDeletereally? my bad. I was sure we first saw the blood in TMTM and he drank it in SS. It only prooves how little from the last episodes of season 5 I remember. Like I said, depression overload. I really didn't like the end of season 5.
ReplyDeleteYep. Go back and watch the beginning of Swan Song. That's when Dean tells Sam he'll back his plan. Then after that scene we see them carrying jugs of demon blood out to the car and putting it in the trunk.
ReplyDeletewell, the end of Swan Song was emotional, that's for sure. I don't mind emotional. By the depression and heaviness of season 5 I mean the general atmosphere of the entire season, mostly the end, when nothing just went right and there was no hope and nothing seemed to exist but the Apocalypse and Lucifer. Step by step, all season through, they were losng their hopes and chances and losing their battles and by the end it just became too heavy to be enjoyable to watch. I just wanted them to get it over with already, even if it meant Sam going to hell. As bad as it sounds.
ReplyDeleteAHBL I
ReplyDeleteSam dying in Dean's arms is my all time favorite Supernatural scene (along with Dean's monologue in AHBL II)
Thank you for posting this later than scheduled,Dahne.. ; ) I get to vote in the last two episodes!Yay!
ReplyDeleteOkay, today is fairly easy for me..
Salvation and Time Is on My Side are immediately ruled out..Wasn't impressed with either and I haven't seen them in ages.
2 Minutes to Midnight is next.It wasn't bad,but I was expecting more! The introduction of Death was epic, but not enough to get my vote.
Let It Bleed was a pretty good episode for me.Unlike most I didn't have a problem with Lisa and I thought that Cas wiping their memories was a good ending. It was heartbreaking to see Cas and Dean's relationship falling apart and the scene at the hospital is helping me have some hope that things can get back to the way they were(somehow..)
But we can't vote for two episodes and my vote in this poll goes to All Hell Brakes Loose Pt.1.I was great to see Andy again and to finally learn something about the YED.And of course the last scene is one of the most memorable and heartbreaking scenes in the show!
Bring the finales,I'm ready..Well,actually,I'm not,but it'll be fun!
That is my theory and it seems to be working well for me as a viewer. :-)
ReplyDeleteTime is on My Side was another example of wasting an episode with only 4 left after the writer's strike. I had hoped they spent the time dreaming up strong scenarios and a great build up. Instead we got Ghostfacers, Long-distance Call, and this one. For me they would have done better leaving it at Jus in Bello which was a real high point.
ReplyDeleteI thorough;y enjoyed Death's description of Lucifer. I yelled out, "SO right" when he said that. Yes, I do talk to my TV.
ReplyDeleteI think because it was the first time a main character truly died, it was more touching. Now it's more like old hat.
ReplyDeleteDemon Lisa was my favorite too. There's something about possessed females in Supernatural that out snark other female roles. They kick butt like none other. Too bad they always end up dead.
ReplyDeleteI don't think anyone on Superantural ever gets anything easy. The writers like to screw with them and us that way. I'm hoping this overwhelming despair and the feeling like no one can ever win will diminish in season 7. The mood is weighing the series down.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that. You're quite right!
ReplyDeleteI was in fact thinking about Swan Song too and I just babbled on.
It's been a while since I watched those episodes.
I'm still not too sure about the vessel thing.
Does it go like this? Feel absolutely free to correct me if I am about to write a lot of rubbish!!
( Nick didn't have any demon blood in his veins so he had to drink the demon blood to keep his physical body strong but, Sam had to drink it to strengthen his mental capacities in order to be strong enough to control Lucifer for a few minutes. Have I got it right?)
However I thought that Sam managed to overcome Lucifer due to the fact of seeing the little soldiers etc. in the Impala.
When not watching marathons, I tend to avoid the end of season 4 through season 5 myself, with the exception of a few favorite episodes. Changing Channels would be one.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't say it better myself. That's exactly how I felt. It's the number one reason why I was ecstatic to get a season 6. I couldn't believe Supernatural would go out on such a season and a half bummer.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about the creepy girl demon in AHBL. She was nasty and just as bad as the human girl in Family Remains. Very, very creepy. I also agree about John's reaction when Dean finally confronts him in Salvation. I was literally yelling, "That's it!" Ugh, John bugs me. Could you at least apologize for not calling Sam back when dean was dying? Terrible human being.
ReplyDeleteAs a plan, it does have major flaws. YED comes off as equally brilliant and stupid, depending on the episode. In a way, so does John. We're told he's the best hunter that ever lived and yet most of the time, he never shows it. One problem I have with Salvation is why he didn't just drive away. The truck had flat tires, yes, but you can still drive on rims for awhile. Was his truck worth more than his life? Bah!
ReplyDeleteHi, No I haven't seen season 6 yet.
ReplyDeleteI am counting the days until the end of August when we will get a dvd with the first half of the season!
Then I will have to wait until November until the second half comes out on Amazon .Uk.
I don't think the US dvd will play on our region 2 dvd players otherwise I would buy that.
As for the demon blood, I had completely forgotten that Lucifer is indeed an angel and not a demon and that that would complicate the whole situation.
Thanks for your explanation
Death in the pizza parlor was the highlight of 2 Minutes to Midnight for me too. They hit the casting bull's eye on this one.
ReplyDeleteHa! I'm happy my computer completely dying had an upside. I don't have a problem with the mind wipe either because it allows me to hope that Lisa and Ben will come back when the show ends in 4 years or so.
ReplyDeleteFrom the two or three bits and pieces I have read; it seems that the writers are going to keep giving the boys a hard time.
ReplyDeleteThat just seems to be the direction they keep going in.
I would love some joy amd happiness for them even if just for a few episodes and not let everything finish in tragedy each time. You're right, it is just too depressing at the moment.
I think it's up to the person who's watching it to interpret it as they so wish. In truth that does make a lot of sense to me. Though it does still confuse me why Cas insisted that Sam needed to drink the demon blood to contain Lucifer since Sam was his true vessel. I honestly don't know though. Probably just Supernatural still wanting to keep that "ick" factor and give Sam more strength to mentally fight Lucifer, and we know he did. Lucifer said "Sam, c'mon. I can feel you, scratching away in there." But I suppose that's just how I choose to interpret it.
ReplyDeleteNow when we get into the discussion of Sam overcoming Lucifer, I believe that Lucifer was distracted by the sun reflecting off the Impala which caused him to lower his guard long enough for Sam to see the soldier and fill Lucifer with all of the memories of Sam's life with his big brother in their home, in the Impala because Chuck made it clear in Swan Song that the Impala has always been the brothers' home.
If you ask me, it was Sam's love for his brother, his bond with his brother and their home and the more touching, intense memories of their lives that made Lucifer go weak and Sam go strong and was able to overcome Lucifer due to all of that. He found a chink in Lucifer's armor and used it to his advantage, and it was all of that I just described above. That is honestly and truthfully how i feel about that scene and how I feel Sam overcame Lucifer. Remember the last memory we see there just before Sam fully takes over? It's Dean grabbing onto Sam and just holding him and hugging him. If that doesn't scream Sam's love and bond with his big brother, then I don't know what would.
Love your optimism. Yes!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have always assumed that it was Sam's love for his brother and the memories of their life together that let him overcome Lucifer in the cemetery. I have never put it down to anything else.
ReplyDeleteThat and the fact that Lucifer was in the process of killing Dean, and Sam's love for his brother was just too strong to let that happen Your probablr right, the demon blood was probably just fot effect.
AHBL pt 1 for me. Even though I had accidentally had the episode spoiled before I watched it, that didn't stop me from crying like a baby at the end.
ReplyDeleteLike all these episodes, but the choice wasn't too hard for me :P
ReplyDelete1. All Hell Breaks Loose - Part 1 (An amazing episode that made me go from really liking the show into making me FREAKING ADORE THIS SHOW OVER ANYTHING ON EARTH)
2. When the Levee Breaks (Couldn't stop crying at the heartbreaking fight between Sam and Dean at the end. Loved the entire episode, really showed us how far Sam had gone)
3. 2 Minutes to Midnight (O' death.. loved the soundtrack when Death came ut of the car. Death was awesome..)
4. Time is on my Side (Simply because I loved Bela in this. She is one of my fave characters, and I loved that they pushed her storyline that far. I miss her so much now though.. poor Bela, spending eternity in Hell. Anyway, the rest of the episode wasn't too special, considering how close it was to the finale)
5. Salvation (A very good episode compared to many of the other season 1 eps. Really made me start to think that this show was just gonna get more and more awesome, the longer into it we got)
6. Let it Bleed (Exciting episode, loved when Lisa was posessed. I usually really disliked the eps that Ben and Lisa had been in in season 6, but I quite liked this. I was so happy when Cas deleted their memory, cause we were finally finished with them.)
Exactly what I hope too.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure they are going to keep screwing the Winchester clan over too. I just hope they get to have good times between being hunted and joy occasionally in the despair. As a viewer, I need that.
ReplyDeleteAll Hell Breaks Lose - Part 1! Easy for me, I totally agree with you on The Doc Benton-episode.
ReplyDeleteFrom what the writers are saying the mood is going to be very much "we can't win"... So.... lol
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree although some have been more moving for me than others
ReplyDeleteDarnit, missed this one, but I would have ranked them:
ReplyDelete1. When the Levee Breaks
2. Two Minutes to Midnight
3. All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1
4. Let it Bleed
5. Salvation
6. Time is on My Side
Too late to vote, but I agree with the result. AHBL1 is a brilliant ep. I also agree that 2MTM s/b second, and that TIOMS should be last. That was a pretty forgettable ep. Hated WTLB, so that would have come last for me.
ReplyDeleteI like a lot of what you say here SammyWG (are you the very same SWG from the CW Board? If so 'hi'). But I don't think the light distracted Lucifer. I think it was that he was going in for the final punch that was probably going to kill Dean that gave Sam the strength to knock him off guard. Then the memories just strengthened Sam's resolve and drove out Lucifer.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone else see parallels with when Voldemort tried to inhabit Harry's body in Order of the Phoenix? Harry had too much love inside him and V couldn't stand being in there. I was reminded of that in SS.
