Since the contracts of many of its original cast members are set to expire in May, Grey’s Anatomy could well play out its most suspenseful story off screen this season — potentially its last.
Whether the actors stay or leave, and whether the ABC hit does call it a day, Justin Chambers is keenly aware that there is no turning back. “It makes me sad to know that we’re closer to the end [than the beginning],” the actor tells TVLine. “[But] it’s been a great ride. It really has. There was no better job that I could’ve fallen into.”
Like Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo, Chambers is undecided about whether he’ll re-sign, even if there does turn out to be a series with which to re-sign. “I don’t know if I’ll go farther,” he insists. “I don’t know if the show will go farther. When we get to that point, we’ll go from there…
“We know it’s going to end sooner or later,” he continues. “It’s just about ending well and the audience getting what they want out of it, and maybe there are some amends made with the characters, because they’re very flawed.”
If he and his fellow MDs don’t re-up, Chambers is skeptical about the chances of Grey’s‘ survival. “It’s possible [it could go on], but I doubt it,” he says. “Meredith is the voice. We need that voice — I do think that. That’s a big part of it.”

Okay, if Derek, Meredith, and Alex are all gone and there's a season nine, I'm out. Alex is my favorite character!
ReplyDeleteFinally someone from the cast says that if Mer goes, the show's off, FINALLY!
ReplyDeleteAs long as there a Grey left in the story line, things could carry on... But without Meredith (Pompeo) I don't think the show would be as strong.
ReplyDeleteThis is a load of BS. I'm getting tired of the 'will they won't they'. PD is waiting for his movie career, both EP and PD are waiting for the money talks. JC is waiting for PD and EP to make a decision. Cause if they go then he can justify a huge pay rise.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Klutzy_girl. If Alex goes (or Cristina), I might have to as well.
I think it's gone on long enough now
ReplyDeleteI don´t want season 9!!! Season 7 was terrible...
ReplyDeleteHe is ABSOLUTELY Right! Mer IS the voice of Grey's Anatomy, without Mer/Der/Alex it isn't Grey's anymore!
ReplyDeletei have a feeling season 8 will be the last, maybe some of the characters can move to LA =)
ReplyDeleteThis is a change for Chambers. I remember him stating in older interviews that he'd like to stay on past his contract. He seemed very definite about it.
ReplyDeleteWhat you said. One of them leaving I could live with, but if several go....
ReplyDeleteits not over till till its over...we wont know for sure probably until mid-season. until then i wont stress over the speculation.
ReplyDeleteI seriously think the guy should go, regardless of the others' decisions, simply because ever since they got rid of Izzie/KH, they didn't come up with a proper storyline for him. He's barely there anymore. I think it's better for both the character and the actor to let them go.
ReplyDeleteThe show should just avoid to go on with the show forever. Even though I still think the show could go on even without PD and EP, the more people leave, the more I think they should simply call it a day. If they wanna continue, create another spin-off. But don't make the show "Grey's Anatomy" continue if it's not really "Grey's Anatomy" anymore. That'd be weird.
