Thanks to Mailin for the heads up.
But wait, there’s more! With the Game of Thrones season two cast, you also get Theon Greyjoy’s bold sister Asha (except we’re not going to call her that).
Producers have tapped Gemma Whelan (Gulliver’s Travels, The Wolfman) to play Asha Yara Greyjoy, the older sister of the Stark family’s impulsive young ward Theon. Yara defies the Ironborn traditions of her family by commanding her own ship and leading men into battle, as well as having a penchant for axes.
Producers changed the character’s name from Asha to Yara presumably because the former sounds too much like another character in the show, Osha (they did the same with young Lord Robert in the Eyrie in season one, changing his name to Robin as not to confuse him with King Robert Baratheon). For those who missed the rest of the S2 cast, here’s who will play Stannis and Melisandre; and Davos, here’s who’s cast for Brienne and here’s Margaery Tyrell.

Wow, she actually looks a bit like the way I pictured Asha :)
ReplyDeleteShe looks a bit too soft to play Asha but we'll see.
ReplyDeleteArgh! Still am only about 25 Chapters into A Clash of Kings, so she still didn't appear in person. No spoilers! Eventually I'm finishing the series.
ReplyDeletePosted it a month ago or so, http://www.spoilertv.com/2011/07/game-of-thrones-season-2-casting-rumors.html , but it was not "official" despite being leaked from HBO sources.
ReplyDeleteNow they have confirmed. her and the name change... sigh.
I preferred Ashlin ( the -in feminine to the -on masculine of the Iron Islands) or Tasha. Oh well, I will always hear Yara and think... 'Oh yeah that's Asha' so they can call her Esgred for all I care.
That was my thought as well. She seems too cute. I imagine that she'll do a fine job though with all of the excellent casting we had in the first season.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I always pictured her more angular, thin and hawk-like.... like Tania Raymonde who played Alex Rosseau on LOST.
ReplyDeleteYou're doing better than me, I'm still a couple of chapters from the end of GoT! I'm trying to make my way through the whole series too.
ReplyDeleteYeah I may ponder or even mock with good nature, but after last season's casting achievement.... I will not doubt Nina Gold.
ReplyDeleteShe could cast Carrottop as Ygritte and I would accept it.
Sweet! And Yara is a cool name too
ReplyDeleteYou'll get there. :)
ReplyDeleteNormally I'm a fast reader with books, but since I've got the audiobook and I'm busy at the moment, it's hard to find long stretches of time to listen to it. And since we still have to wait over half a year til Season 2 airs...
Yeah, I'm usually a lot faster but I've recently worked my way through the whole of Fringe as well so it's taking me a little longer!
ReplyDeleteDid you read the first book after watching the show? Because I'm finding myself comparing them in my head and picking out all the differences. I think it may be stopping me from enjoying it as much so I'm looking forward to the second book, not knowing a lot of what's to come in it.
Ahhh Fringe. I need to rewatch it again as preparation for S4.
ReplyDeleteFor Game of Thrones, I watched the episode and then listened to the chapters which got covered in that particular episode. I also look for the differences but since this TV adaptation is very close to the books, and some parts of the book drag on and on and on, I prefer the TV series.
It definitely is different with the 2nd book since I don't have a trajectory of what will happen. As long as you won't get too upset about the differences, I think both the books and the TV series are telling the story in an exciting and entertaining format.
I'm wondering why I never watched it before. S1 and 2 were a bit up and down, not keen on the "bad thing of the week" format. But S3 was incredible, Anna and John are amazing and it's now on my favourite seasons of shows list!
ReplyDeleteI'm gonna watch the show again at some point because the book has made me more interested in certain characters, knowing more of their background etc. I think that of the differences, there's parts of each that I prefer so it is nice to have both. And it is great seeing the stories come to life.
Physically she look just like I pictured Asha, however she does look very soft...Though the casting has been spot on for the first season
ReplyDeleteName change doesn't bother me too much, the casting has been flawless so far so I expect it to continue. Welcome to GOT Gemma :)
ReplyDeleteYay, more casting news...keep it coming!
ReplyDeleteI didn´t really picture Asha...or Yara looking like this, but I trust them to find the right person.
Nice cast. Can't wait for season 2.
ReplyDeleteDang. She's a newbie. Only 4 credits. No wonder I didn't recognize the name or the face.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree completely. But I suppose it may be tough to find a beautiful yet imposing woman with the budget they have and the cast they already have in place.
