Game of Thrones - SSVFX Breakdowns
Heading Screen Scene VFX I supervised over 350 shots for Game of Thrones, season 1. Here are a few breakdowns selects. Game of Thrones VFX has been nominated for an Emmy. Read here.
Hats off to all the SSVFX artists who contributed and also Sarah Mooney - SSVFX Producer and Nicholas Murphy - SSVFX Production Assistant who were both instrumental in it’s production.
Also a big thank you to Adam McInnes, VFX Supervisor and his team, Peter Hartless, Keith Mason, Niall McEvoy and Colin McCusker.
Please also see Game of Thrones - VFX Breakdowns for further info on individual shots.

More great VFX ...... it will be a special treat indeed if next season can match the VFX quality of Season One. Especially considering more dragons and Direwolves have been promised.
ReplyDeleteDo the direwolves require a lot of visual effects? I thought they are just using ordinary wolves. Or do they need the effects for the scenes they will be involved in?
ReplyDeleteFrom the interviews I have read/seen they plan to use CGI for the Direwolves at least some of the time next year. I'm not sure if it's a plan to make them appear larger than the dogs or if it's a matter of CGI can be "trained" more easily then real life dogs.....
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. I love watching these featurettes.
ReplyDeleteMe too! I could watch every scene broken down like this I think... I am hoping for some serious extra features on the DVD set when it comes out next year.
ReplyDeleteThere were so many BTS videos & featurettes that I think they could fill several discs with countless extra features if they want to.
ReplyDeleteSo far i tried to stay away from spoilers, so I haven't read a lot of GoT related stuff since the finale. It looks like I won't have the time to catch up with the books in time, so I'll try to stay spoilerfree as much as I can.
ReplyDeleteDon't make me think of that! XD
ReplyDeleteI know the won't but they certainly could.... I will be happy with one full DVD of features.... or at least a few BTS features on every DVD.
Good luck! Honestly 98% of the GoT posts have been nearly spoiler free as far as I can recall. A few names here and there, the name of an event or two but not a description of the event, things like that.
ReplyDeleteI posted a long Q&A video with GRRM that has no spoilers I recall. http://www.spoilertv.com/2011/08/game-of-thrones-george-rr-martin-q.html
Also some very cool maps of the realms are posted in the Xaro Xhoan Daxos casting news thread. Each map is cartoony and fun, but they have the sigils of each house in the region... informative stuff! http://www.spoilertv.com/2011/08/game-of-thrones-season-2-nonso-anozie.html
I also posted a few artists rendering of 14 GoT castles or landmarks in the GRRM video interview thread. http://www.spoilertv.com/2011/08/game-of-thrones-grrm-talks-about.html
Those 3 should all be spoiler free and might be fun to look at, but I wouldn't blame you if you avoided them all anyway. :)
Thanks, definitely appreciated!
ReplyDeleteOriginally I wanted to catch up with the books between seasons, but now I decided to continue the other big ass fantasy book series I'm reading, in English since the 10th and last book has been published this February and only 7 books have been translated to German so far and I don't want to wait 3 to 5 years until the last book is published in German. But the transition to English is a bit hard, it's not the typical vocabulary I'm used to.
But anyway, even if I finish this series in time I don't think I want to jump right into the next big fantasy series.
You're welcome!
ReplyDeleteYeah it can be nice to break up fantasy series with something else in the middle.... I'm trying to do that now.
Good luck with the English translation... I can only imagine how difficult it could be...
Thanks for posting, it's so cool seeing how they create the special effects on the show.
ReplyDeleteAlways nice to see how the show is put together.
ReplyDeleteVery cool stuff. I'm surprised they even used CGI in some of those places. I certainly didn't notice.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Catelyn badge. Yuck.
WOW! I could watch this for hours.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry it gets better real fast. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks really like seeing the special effects before and after. Should I high standard on first season. Excited to see how going to handle the dragons and direwolves in the next season
ReplyDeleteWhat 10 book series are you reading?
ReplyDeleteI much prefer this video to the last one. After watching the last video, I'm starting to notice the green screens almost all the time, while this one, not so much.
ReplyDeleteCool little featurette is that! :)
ReplyDelete'Malazan Book Of The Fallen' by Steven Erikson. Absolutely amazing books with incredibly good characters and a lot of different, broad and complicated story lines. Takes a lot of time, but worth every minute of it, maybe the best thing I ever read.
ReplyDeleteOh! I read Book 1! I stopped after that because, at the time, only 7 or 8 books were out and I had heard that he wrote pretty quickly. It was fantastic. My only complaint was that the world was REALLY hard to get a grasp on.
ReplyDeleteWhile Martin's ASoIaF universe has a complex political system, a few cultures, and a slew of characters to follow... Malazan has all of that times 5, PLUS, an entire magical system. Sure, a lot of fantasy is like that, but he never really lets you get comfortable. I remember jumping from chapter to chapter and always being just a step away from understanding xD.
That certainly is true, it's such an incredibly complex world and I can promise you that it even gets way more complicated after the first book.
ReplyDeleteIt's just hard to keep track of all the characters, the political systems, the conspiracies & allies gods and mortals are forging and of course the magical system. But I find it very rewarding too even though sometimes I have to dig in some of the older books to find some info that suddenly is important 3 books later.
I was surprised too. I mean if I took the time to think about it and looked for it in every scene I may notice it..... but that's the point of it all. The VFX were so good I did not notice them as VFX and I was able to watch the show without realizing I was watching VFX.
ReplyDeleteGreat job!
Any Game of Thrones fans in here read Polish?
ReplyDeleteGRRM released an interview on his site he did while in Poland. It's all in Polish and frankly I have yet to fins a good online translator to do large pieces like that well.
Anyway, here is the interview. http://e.czaskultury.pl/czytanka/rozmowy/718-nikt-nie-chce-sie-znalezc-w-prologu
