We are happy to report that Syfy is rewarding you fans and the show with an extra episode!
"They've all been amazingly behind us," Paglia told us about the network. "[The cancellation] was shocking news—I think shocking to even the people involved in making the decisions. We just want to go out on a high note in the most positive way we can."
With the extra episode order, the Eureka writers "have the opportunity to give us and the viewers closure—they've been loyal, loyal fans for years," said Erica Cerra, who—unlike her restrained character Jo—broke down in tears during our interview.
Don't cry yet, Eureka fans. "We have a great season coming up—17 episodes left to air," Ferguson reminded us as we were about to cry ourselves. "Take a moment, get sad if you want to get sad, but there's some really great work coming. I'm really proud of it," he said, and he wants us to enjoy it. "We worked really hard on it. I'd love it if instead of a tone of sadness people could watch it and go out on a tone of joy."
Are you as sad as we are about Eureka's abrupt end? Hug it out in the comments!

Oh thank God!
ReplyDeleteSad that it's ending. Glad that they will at least have a chance to wrap things up. Hopefully it won't be rushed but an imaginative ending worthy of the series.
ReplyDeleteBetter than nothing. I'm glad the show will have resolution for its characters.
ReplyDeleteEspero que tenha um final digno para a serie .
ReplyDeleteAnyone else feel like we just got the Producers version of "We can still be friends"?
ReplyDeleteEureka has the rest of this season, the entire next season, plus a bonus episode. How is that abrupt??
ReplyDeleteSome shows that got actual abrupt ends: Firefly, The Cape, Eastwick, Past Life, Defying Gravity.
Sorry, but I don't see anything vaguely abrupt about the end of Eureka which is still more than a year away.
Sad? Yes. Unexpected? Sure. Abrupt? Not at all.
It would have been abrupt if they hadn't ordered this extra episode. And to take back season six like that? That's everyone's problem.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad they are giving us some closure.
ReplyDeleteEven without this extra episode, it still wasn't an abrupt end. Though, you could certainly say this is an abrupt about face from last week's season 6 announcement.
ReplyDeleteYes, it's a bummer that there are going to be a few less episodes than were expected last week. Still, I applaud Syfy for letting fans and everyone involved with the show know now when the show will come to an end. I think this is far better than the standard timing of waiting until all the episodes have been filmed (and often until they have all been aired) before announcing cancellations. Heck, some channels don't ever announce cancellations, they make you wait till the next season starts and if you don't see your favorite show in the listings, it must be cancelled (or maybe just delayed, wait longer and find out).
To me this is mostly good news, because the show will get a proper send off, not left on a cliffhanger. The cast and crew will also be able to accept other jobs instead of being left in limbo for the next year forced to turn down anything that might conflict. So, we will be seeing our favorites from Eureka showing up in other shows next year, which is definitely a good thing.
I have the feeling they only want us to shut up.
ReplyDeleteI don't like the thought of Erica Cerra crying. I will now hate Syfy even more for causing it.
ReplyDeleteConsidering they're in the process of filming the end of the 2012 season, this was VERY abrupt. They did indeed wait until all but the final episode was in the can before announcing the cancellation...which is precisely why "one more episode" is very good news.
ReplyDeleteThey were going to start filming what was going to be the final episode of season five tomorrow and it seems like they wouldn't have been able to wrap it up, so that's why it is abrupt.
ReplyDeleteBut the extra episode helps, so yay!
I really dislike the channel formerly called SciFi. They have almost completely lost touch with their core audience.
ReplyDeleteOoh. One episode? Gee, thanks. I'm sure Jaime Paglia and Eureka had to beg just to get the one episode. After the way this whole ordeal has been portrayed the last couple of days, this almost seems like a slap in the face for the show.
ReplyDeleteHey thanks guys for putting up this news post i sent you :) and good news about 1 more ep but i wish they would not have .. to fk over the fans like they did.....
ReplyDeleteMike.
I know exactly what you mean. She's such a sweetheart.
ReplyDeleteI was actually twitter when she found out about it (the cast found out on twitter; real classy, Syfy)
i hate this so much. why always the best shows gets canceled when they are doing their best??? not fair
ReplyDeleteYeah, since they've become "SyFy" they've done a lot of things wrong.
ReplyDeleteI really hope they do us proud with the ending there is nothing worse than a mediocre rushed ending. Still so gutted they are cancelling it absolutely love this show.
ReplyDeleteGlad they get the chance to actually end the show properly.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad we're going to get some closure. I hope the episode is longer than usual to allow the writers space to wrap everything up.
ReplyDeleteStill so sad to see the show go, but I am grateful for the extra episode. I can think of a lot of shows that didn't even get that. You had to guess or use your imagination for some kind of closure.. No matter what, I will always be a Eureka fan.
ReplyDeleteCan someone tell me why they are stopping the series? It's one of the best shows I have seen.
ReplyDeletebastards!!!!! how could you let it end its AMAZING D:
ReplyDeleteim a little confused - is it ending with series 4 or is there a season 5 in 2012
ReplyDeleteso is there a season 5 to come or is it ending on season 4?
ReplyDeletebut... but... erica has tweeted that Jo Lupo is NOT coming back in season 5. i'm confused... was really hoping Jo will team up with Carter, kick the baddie's ass (i.e., ship hijacker), save the day and sail off with Zane.
ReplyDeleteoh wait.. i just understood what she meant in her tweet. it was actually 'no, she can't tell fans if jo lupo is coming back to eureka', not 'no, jo is not coming back to eureka' :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited to see at least 3 episodes coming in April 2012 - I couldn't believe that even heartless tv execs would leave 80% of a tv cast flying into space on a rocket, one of them (the romantic leading lady!) without a spacesuit, and only a spot in the sky to look at!
ReplyDeleteLet's be thankful they're at least giving us closure with 'Eureka', and doing it properly. They could be throwing a 'Star Trek: Enterprise' poo ball of a finale in our faces. (If the cancellation is due to a financial issue, then I would suggest that "SyFy" ditch their moronic "WWE" bullcrap because just the pay for one "wrestler" alone could fund an entire series of 'Eureka'.
ReplyDeleteAs to all those complaining that since "SciFi" became "SyFy" they've been doing nothing but screwing things up: rightly so! You've hit the nail on the head with that. But then, they became "SyFy" when NBC bought them and as we all know, NBC had been screwing up their own channel's programming for decades now. (I believe that NBC stands for the "No Brain Cells" network.) NBC did the same thing when they bought the Weather Channel - screwed it up royally - so you get just about everything EXCEPT weather. Let's just be thankful they're still giving us SOME SF on "SyFy".
(Take note, NBC Network Exec morons; you haven't gotten things right since the early 1970s. You cancelled 'Search' and that started your downfall, and now you have to frack up everything you touch. Stop buying out other networks just to ruin them because your own network is failing. You lost your radio station for similar reasons. Take the hint.)
