CW Orders Additional Episodes of Supernatural, Gossip Girl, NIkita and 90210

3 Aug 2011

The CW is looking to beat the midseason rerun blues by supersizing the orders of four returning drama series. The network has picked up two additional episodes each of soaps Gossip Girl and 90210, bringing their orders to 24 episodes, and one additional episode each of veteran Supernatural and sophomore Nikita, which will go up to 23 episodes each. Notably missing is CW's flagship drama, The Vampire Diaries.

  1. This is great news I just wish we could have a few more episodes of One Tree Hill an I hope Vampire Diaries gets an episode or 2 more as well !!

    ReplyDelete
  2. I certainly wouldn't call The Vampire Diaries the CW's "flagship drama."

    ReplyDelete
  3. It is in terms of ratings :)

    ReplyDelete
  4. This is good news, but me thinks One Tree Hill should have more episodes.. Right now it's only 13 episode season order..

I wish it was the other way around - 2 more for Supernatural and Nikita - but I'll take what I can get! :D

    ReplyDelete
  6. Really?  And what show would you call The CW's flagship drama?

    ReplyDelete
  7. And press coverage.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Both Gossip Girl and Vampire Diaries are frequently referred to as  their flagship

    ReplyDelete
  9. Less repeats are always a good thing, especially on The CW where the mid-season breaks are excruciatingly long.

    ReplyDelete
  10. That's very generous of The CW given Gossip Girl's steady ratings decline over the past two seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  11. i think last season it was still their #2 rated show on average in w 18-34 at least they mentioned that in the upfronts

    ReplyDelete
  12. That's great news, at least 90210 and Supernatural for me. Shame SPN didn't get an extra two episodes as well though.

    ReplyDelete
  13. So... someone wanna explain to me why Supernatural didn't get 24 episodes?
I couldn't imagine sitting through 22 Gossip Girls... let alone 24....

    ReplyDelete
  14. This is certainly the best part of Supernatural's extra episode :P
I'm definitely loving the new direction of CW.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well, in all fairness, that is the network's core demo.  I still can't believe that The CW is happy with the overall viewer decline.  Maybe the new head honcho has a different game plan in mind?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Great for those shows, and I guess that people who watch more than one CW show might be less likely to go into midseason induced comas if it isn't all the shows that evaporate for the entire period.

At first I thought TVD might have been left out due to the extra work that I assume is involved in creating the otherworldly elements. But that doesn't make sense what with SPN getting an extra episode.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Maybe the writers for Supernatural don't want to find a way to extend the season beyond what they wanted? Just a guess.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yay for SPN! Although I'm pretty sure we knew that already.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm encouraged by what's transpired since the leadership change.  I'll wait until I see the finished product in the fall before giving a stronger opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Supernatural doesn't use nearly as many special effects as TVD :P
    *pokes dragons*

  21. run blues by supersizing the orders of four returning drama series. The network has picked up two additional episodes each of soaps Gossip Girl and 90210, bringing their orders to 24 episodes, and one additional episode each

    ReplyDelete
  22. ^^; I had a moment of ''*__* again??? YYEAAHHH.......aahh....it's stil 23 -_-''

    Still happy for the show, but I'm sad for having false hope of episode 24^^;

    ReplyDelete
  23. Blame the budget they get.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Could be for the actors too. Just a guess too, since it's rare to find a serie where they only have 2 leads who work impossible hours, every day. 22 is already hard, 23 should be enough for J&J

    ReplyDelete
  25. i watch tvd but adore snpl! so glad to hear!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh, I wasn't saying it was bad. Just pointing out that while they both use  cgi, TVD uses more, so you can't say one should be increased if the other is.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yay for Nikita getting an additional episode, although I wish it were two.  Happy for Supernatural as well!

    ReplyDelete
  28. it's hard for SPN to use many more special effect cause the CW just kept on cutting the budget, especially since it's not a show who's mainly for the audience they want.

While on the other hand, you have show like VD who attract the teens of Twilight, so they can have more budget for attracting the core audience. We'll see if that change with the new CW leader

    ReplyDelete
  29. I wasn't saying I think TVD should be extended because SPN was. I was just shooting down my own argument. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. OMG a 23-episode season of SPN. :)

    ReplyDelete
  31. Does that mean we have 22ep and 1 of 2 hours that count for two or we really have one additional? (spn ofcourse)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I dont think the actors wanted a new season either (not sure) but i heard that somewhere so maybe this was a deal to end the show right

    ReplyDelete
  33. I would Like this comment more then once if I could :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. 149 episodes for SPN... I think that's a good argument to have 1 more :D 24 please lol

    ReplyDelete
  35. maybe supernatural only got 1 extra episode to have a 2 hour finale. So if they do decide to get rid of it this year they can do what they did with smallville

    ReplyDelete
  36. LOL Totally agree with this one! Haha! I do remember Sera saying that they wanted to do a two-parter (like AHBL) for the S7 finale, so they had plans for 23 eps, it just be okay'd by the network.

    ReplyDelete
  37. :) If the ratings are OK or better, we have chances to get renew since the director's opinion count for a lot and the new leader of the CW is a SPN fan

    ReplyDelete
  38. If it was going the way of Smallville, I think we'd know as they gave us a lot of warning that Smallville was ending this year.

  39. Michele Klinger3 August 2011 at 23:31

im happy :) CW programming is better when its their normal shows and not random filler shows

    ReplyDelete
  40. If Supernatural does what it did last year in terms of ratings, it's coming back. Season 8 Premier will be episode 150. Networks love when series make it to certain milestones. Plus it would be the third show to hit 150 on the CW (Smallville and OTH). Padalecki has said he is with the show til the end.

Plus starting the season with the 150th episode milestone is a pretty good promotional tool. But I also think if CW decides this is the last season, than they have to do the right thing an order an additional episode to make the 150th episode the final one.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh so I'm not stupid she did say that! awesome lOL!!!! was AHBL ep 21-22 or ep 22 ?

    ReplyDelete
  42. They were doing 23 to have a two hour finale.  The 24th episode is a gift from the CW.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Sera said they had a 23 episode season already planned.  They talked about it at Comic Con.   23 episodes with a 2 hour season finale.   They now have 24 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  44. That ought to be wrong.  Sera had announced 23 weeks ago.

    ReplyDelete
  45. That's not making sense.  They were given a 2 hour finale and talking 23 episodes in July, so what is this?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Wow, that is awesome, but what happened to Vampire Diaries?  That's surprising.  And, how could be talking having a two hour finale with 23 episodes back in  July and are now being told Supernatural is getting an extra episode?  Is the Finale a two hour single episode?  Just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  47. All people agreed to do one more season. Personally I think it's best to have a normal 22 episode order, that gives time for the story to unfold and end..

    ReplyDelete
  48. It's really not a big deal.  It won't change anything about the finale or the story arc of the season.  SPN will most likely be tacking on a relatively self-contained filler episode somewhere in the middle of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm loving it so much I am going to go try Nikita right now. When I moved my viewing night to Friday, I never had the opportunity to watch it and my sour grapes over losing my favorite viewing day led to me not even trying it on the website... But, if I am happy with the CW in general, I will give it a go.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Sh.tty quality, Shi.tty shows, CW stinks

    ReplyDelete
  51. Good news for Supernatural and Nikita, watched the whole first season last few weeks and looking forward to season 2. I think if they gave TVD more episodes they would have to give more for Secret Circle too so they can show new episodes for both shows they are airing in one evening. Who knows, if Secret Circle does well maybe both TVD and SC will get additional eps.

    ReplyDelete
  52. It is by far their most popular show and the one they spend the most time promoting.  They seem to building it as the show to launch new shows off.

    ReplyDelete
  53. OK, so I was incredibly pleased to hear that Supernatural was getting 23 episodes.  Now I want it to be 24 like GG and 90210.  Certainly they have more than enough plot to fill a 24 episode order.  I guess I am never pleased.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Gossip Girl was a favorite of Dawn Ostroff.  However, with a new person in charge, it will be up to ratings and whether the CW wants to rebrand itself to go beyond the young women demo.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I don't think One Tree Hill will be getting additional episodes since it is advertised as the final season and because it starts midseason.  If the additional episodes are to reduce the midseason hiatus time, then OTH wouldn't fit the criteria.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Things definitely look up for Supernatural fans due to the change.  Let's see what happens when the promo for fall shows comes out.  It should be pretty soon.  If Supernatural gets more than 2 shots then I would say we've struck gold with the new leadership.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'd say the best guess is that it is more expensive to shoot an episode of Supernatural or Nikita than it is of GG or 90210.  I doubt the writers or the stars had much to do with it.

    ReplyDelete
  58. That's awesome! Like said, I wish it was 24 episodes to give us the 150th episode finale. that woulda been great.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Maybe because the CW pays more per episode for VD than it does for Supernatural?  It would make sense that the WB charges them more for it since it gets higher ratings.

    ReplyDelete
  60. They only have 23 episodes, not 24.  The CW is merely confirming what we already knew at Com-Con.  There will be 21 episodes plus a 2 hour finale, bringing the total to 23 episodes.  This is old news for SPN SpoilerTV fans.

    ReplyDelete
  61. AHBL was episodes 21 and 22.  This year the finale will be episodes 22 & 23.

    ReplyDelete
  62. There is no 24th episode.  The finale counts as 2 episodes because the actors have to work twice as long.  It counts as 2 episodes for their contracts.  there is nothing new here.  The two-hour finale is the gift from the CW.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Agreed.  If they were thinking Supernatural would end this year, they would hype it up as much as they did Smallville.  The fact that the CW head already asked if the leads were interested in doing season 8 pretty much means that it will come down to the ratings.  As long as SPN continues to be one of the highest rated shows on the CW, it will be renewed.

    ReplyDelete
  64. All this means is that the CW is behind in making an official announcement.  My guess is they didn't expect the news to be shared at Com-Con.  However, since a lot of their constituents don't follow Com-Con or probably even spoilers, it makes sense for them to include SPN in the announcement.  Com-Con is not official, so this is the official announcement of 23 episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I love the idea of the 150th episode being the season 8 premiere.  It will give it that extra oomph and hopefully give the CW a new marketing ploy, ensuring that people have heard of SPN.  Here's hoping the ratings stay or increase.  I just wish I was a Nielsen family.

    ReplyDelete
  66. BarnabusStinson4 August 2011 at 02:42

I just wish that the days of the outdated Nielsen system are numbered.  Not likely, but I can wish...

    ReplyDelete
  67. According to the article, Vampire Diaries is sticking with 22 episodes because the show has a more demanding production schedule.  They wouldn't have time to do any more episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yeah, I just reread the deadline article.  It doesn't say anything about 24 episodes anywhere.  It said the SPN episode total would be brought up to 23 like you said.

    ReplyDelete
  69. i dont understand how those shows get more episodes but not the vampire diaries!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. what about the vampire diaries? 2 more episodes would be great
the hiatus's are waaaaay to long

    ReplyDelete
  71. After resisting Nikita, out of loyalty to the prior TV version of La Femme Nikita, I started watching the reruns this summer. It's pretty good although not as good as the first four seasons of LFN. Maggie Q is a good Nikita but I'm still not seeing any sizzle between "Michael and Nikita" that made LFN . Unfortunately I can't find any "free way" to watch eps 1.09 to 1.15 and I don't love the show enough to buy the episodes on Amazon VOD and I can

  72. shaye and Ryan: the full, linked article explains why - SpoilerTV only posted the partial Deadline article.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I agree JMC00 and Daphne ... it would be a great promotional event to have the S8 premiere as episode #150, better to me than having a 24 episode season just so the S7 finale could be #150. Viewers and demos are always higher in the premieres than the finales. Too much other stuff interferes at finale time ("summer movies", graduations, more sports preemptions) - any milestone "boost" might be wasted,

    ReplyDelete
  74. oh geez just when I thought I understood... confused.

We get 23 episode meaninf 23 hours or 24 hours? :D

    ReplyDelete
  75. oh good ..... :D so 23 hours ahhaah thanks.

    this is great news!

    ReplyDelete
  77. excelentes noticias para Gosip Girl :D

    ReplyDelete
  78. SPN now 23 episodes BEST NEWS during Hellatus 24 would have been better oh well

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yay, one more episode of Nikita <3!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Supernatural 23 episode = I am very very Happy!!!

    ReplyDelete
  81. 1 addtional episode?  I'm really happy but it just seems like an odd number.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Glad to see this new exec appreciates Supernatural and its fans.

    ReplyDelete
  83. In my opinion, The CW would have lesser timeslots to fill if OTH would have a full episode order...

    ReplyDelete
  84. Very good news;  probably means that there will be a two-parter ep. in there somewhere, not necessarily at the end of the season, perhaps just before the Christmas break.
I think that would be a good way to keep up the interest for the new year.

    Maybe the "space-ship" episode.
I can just see Dean sprawled out in the captain's chair of a sleek black space-ship, named Impala, of course, with Sammy as first officer, Bobby as the crusty engineer,  Ellen at communications and Jo at the helm manning the rock-salt canons!!!  ( only teasing, only joking!!!!! )

    ReplyDelete
  85. so happy for this especially for Gossip Girl and Supernatural wish they would give more episodes for Vampire Diaries since it is the CWS Biggest Series

    ReplyDelete
  86. And I'm guessing that they take more time to film etc because of special effects and action scenes.

    ReplyDelete
  87. That sounds reasonable. I know GG has a large cast as well which in itself might highten costs, but presumably less CGI work than TVD etc. (At least I hope it's less.)

    ReplyDelete
  88. so happy about this for supernatural
although it will be weird not having the usual 22 episodes, its weird in a good way coz we get one more! :D
unlike season 3 where we only had 16

    ReplyDelete
  89. Don't mean to sound greedy, but why not get 24 episodes for SN as well??? We have better ratings than GG and 90210 and I think we would deserve it more...
Oh, well, I'm happy for this +1 and I'll be happier (if)when we get an  8th season!!!

    ReplyDelete
  90. Oh my.. Now I get to waste even more of my time on TV.. If only I had any selfcontrol..
