CW - New President wants Procedurals, Comedies, Remakes and Superhero series
5 Aug 2011
Misc ShowsThe CW's 2011 - 2012 season was mostly of Ex-President Dawn Ostroff's design but starting next season the new President will oversee development and at the TCA he expressed an interest in Procedurals, Comedies, Remakes and Superhero series
"We are opening ourselves up to look at comedies this year," said Pedowitz. "We feel there are comedies out there that would have worked well on CW."
Citing the existence of DC Comics in the Warner Bros. family, Pedowitz said he's actively looking to add a superhero-themed series to add to the schedule.
Pedowitz also spoke of his desire to see at least one drama join the schedule that avoids the serialized style that marks most CW series given they repeat better and invite more viewers to sample beyond the premiere.
"We're not going to walk away from serialized programming but at the same time there's a deep focus on that close-ended show that has a CW show feel to it," said Pedowitz. "We need those shows. That's where we're headed."
Another programming style Pedowitz signaled an interest in is remakes, citing the success of "90210" on CW and Syfy's "Battlestar Galactica." However, he declined to identify specific properties he's eyeing but made his desire to do something in this territory clear: "I believe in new twists on a great idea," he said.

I like this new guy!
ReplyDeleteIs this guy for real? Because he seems to good to be true. (Not just this, all the supernatural love as well)
ReplyDeletemmm i think what makes the CW special is the lack of comedies and procedurals
ReplyDeleteMore CW-shows like Niktia and Ringer.
ReplyDeleteThe serialized nature of CW shows is the main reasons I watch. More comedies, remakes and superheroes is what's on every other network...
ReplyDeleteSo I'm not a fan of the direction if this statement even means anything... Right now remakes, procedurals and comedies are hot, so it's little wonder he wants those genres. If in a year documentaries, and news programs were sweeping the nation I bet his opinion would change.
Bottom line is TV executives what to make their network as profitable as possible and traditionally follow pop culture more than create it.
I dislike procedurals. The only good thing about them is that I don't care when they are cancelled, because there's no story to interrupt. The move to more 'reality' TV and procedurals is what's effectively killing TV, as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather go watch web-based shows (like The Guild), if that's all that TV has to offer.
ReplyDeleteAdmittedly I'm not a fan of procedurals, but I like most of this guy's ideas. The CW has long needed more diverse offerings than they have had. With Smallville and Supernatural maintaining reasonably high ratings for the CW, it was always sensible to try to capture that market. I really am impressed with the new exec's ideas. Plus he likes Supernatural, so that is a win for me.
ReplyDeleteSounds to me like he plans to slowly phase out crap like Gossip GIrl, 90210, and the ilk. Expanding the network parameters to appeal to everybody is a good idea. Serial dramas, contained dramas, procedurals, comedies, superheroes.... it all sounds good to me.
ReplyDeletecomedies - great
ReplyDeletesuperheroes - great if done well (i.e. NOT smallville)
procedurals - hell no!
i hope they dont get rid of gossip gitl though are those genre type but i like this idea of comedies and remakes
ReplyDeleteCW is a serious network now!
ReplyDeletesuperheroe series please cw child program for weekend but monday to friday adult only the new president ideas about that counsel advice a lot of fan feedback write cw web page he realy nead to read our sujestion and opinion.
ReplyDeleteThe CW tried remakes and we got 90210 and Melrose Place. I was hoping to go another route. I think adding a procedural could be a good start for the CW. They need something to kickstart their network and whether you like them or not, procuderals do well overall. I also think at least some comedies are necessary.
ReplyDeleteWhat I really like though is the idea of getting away from the core dynamic. Not only is that good for Supernatural, but I also think it is the only way the network can survive. Here's hoping new leadership means positive change in both the network and how it is perceived by others.
Thanks for this! the new president sounds very good for the CW! Programming might get better just maybe
ReplyDeletethis sounds pretty good. not living in america, i don't know much about the diferent stations and what they play but i do know that my two fave shows at the moment both come from the CW
ReplyDeleteas long as supernatural stays on air, i'm very happy but these new ideas sound good. a cw procedural could be good. i find i like procedurals when they start off but get bored with them over time but a new one on the Cw would be good to watch. comedy i reckon could be hit or miss
i love superheroes so if it looks good i'll like a new good superhero show
but the most important part by far is just keeping supernatural on air. the extra episode this season looks like a strong start :D
I agree...
ReplyDeleteThe CW needs a show that is not only buzz-worthy, fan-drawing, but also something that will bring more mainsteam viewers which equals more ratings... back in the day, Fox had married with children which got a lot of press and viewers and put the network on the board in terms of what it could offer...
So far I just don't see anything on the CW that could do that. Not to say that the WB and UPN had much more viewers with their programming but those networks combined did better overall than the CW has and the CW is supposed to be the combination network between WB and UPN...
I am not a fan of procedurals, but I guess no one can argue that for the most part they seem to be the shows that pull in the big ratings for the other networks, so I can see why the CW might want to try them.
ReplyDeleteAt least he seems a guy with some ideas in mind.
ReplyDeleteEven if it's all been done before on other networks, if they manage to find innovative ways of looking at procedurals, superheroes etc., there's no reason that they can't do well.
Only one humble bit of advice:- find lead actors and actresses who are appealing and with whom the viewers will feel an instant caring and connection.
No procedures, just no, I hate them! I hope this doesn't mean bad news for shows like Nikita and TVD. I'm not sure I like this guy anymore.
ReplyDeleteJulia Eason said procedurals seem to be the ones that pull in the ratings, and higher ratings for the CW would probably give a boost to all their current shows too.
ReplyDeleteThey're probably trying to expand the number of shows they have so it shouldn't hurt Nikita or TVD.
With a bigger budget, plus having him fly and don the suit, Smallville would have been great. A lot of the show had more action than Superman Returns.
ReplyDeleteNooooo. Not another remake!
ReplyDeleteI like this guy !
ReplyDeletethe CW needs more shows like Ringer and Nikita ! serious shows, adult show ! No more craps like 90210, Gossip etc.
