Is none an option? :-P I really hate reality TV. The worst are SPOT (stupid people on TV) shows that emphasize being a celebrity star by being a complete moron. But I hate the competitions also in which the whole idea seems to be humiliating people in front of millions and dashing their dreams or rewarding the biggest jerks.
ReplyDeleteI actually like some Reality shows... they're not must-see-tv for me but they're entertaining. Like Face/Off or Platinum Hit. I like the shows where there's creativity and people passionate about their ambitions, as opposed to the Big Brothers of Reality.
ReplyDeleteFace-Off was interesting! I agree it wasn't "must see" TV, but to have a look inside the special effects make-up world was incredible to me.
ReplyDeleteWhile I don't watch much reality TV (SYTYCD, Face-Off, and non competition shows like Deadliest Catch, American Pickers etc) I have absolutely NO PROBLEM with them whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteMany series lose money for their network or at best break even. Reality shows are not my cup of tea as a rule, but they do provide the networks with a cheap series that actually makes them money. Reality shows providing money for a network is an important factor to other more risky shows being made or kept on the air.
Let them spend a little on Idol and make millions they can spend on FRINGE. I'm okay with that.
I have to bow out of this one. I'm willfully (and blissfully) ignorant of almost everything in this category. If I did vote, I'd cast my vote for Iron Chef.
ReplyDeleteI'm getting over the reality tv craze (without a 12 step program) but still love the beauty of the world that you see on The Amazing Race. And the eye candy of Phil, the host.
ReplyDeleteThat show was just really interesting... seeing how quickly they could make those prosthetics and how they got around mistakes in such a short space of time.
ReplyDeleteI got a whole new appreciation for shows like Buffy that had to go through all that day in and day out.
Love reality tv!!!!!!! SYTYCD, Amazing Race, DWTS, Big Brother!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Emmy Awards honours television entertainment... all of it. That includes talk shows, documentaries, reality shows, sports, even rarely seen cable programs.
ReplyDeleteThat said. I voted for Dancing With The Stars and Celebrity Apprentice this season.
Way back when, there was this show called "Queen for a Day." Several women (maybe 4 or 5) were interviewed and showcased, and then the winner, who was the woman who suffered the most tragedy and was "most deserving," was announced, given a crown and roses, and some money. I'm thinking it was early '60s.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm saying is, Reality TV has always been with us, folks, and in some ways it's better than it used to be. The best parts are when creative competition produces fine works of art. The worst parts are the bickering among contestants, the humiliation, the exposing of people just out of bed in their skivvies.
A show that I really like, and is not listed above, is HGTV's Design Star. It's all about interior design, and the contestants come up with some beautiful results.
The shows I selected from above are all contests: Dancing with the Stars, Project Runway, Iron Chef (Top Chef is good too), and The Voice, which was good in the beginning at least. These shows, at their best, inspire.
I love Design Star... forgot about it despite it sponsoring one of the contests on the site for an AMEX gift card... ooops.
ReplyDeleteSeason six starts tomorrow.
