In case you missed it, this past Friday marked a pivotal day. The Supernatural summer hellatus was half-way over. Yay! Or … we’ve only gotten through half of hellatus so far. *sob*
I thought now might be a good time to take a look back at season 6, now that some time has passed to get some perspective. The above word cloud was created from comments on this site throughout this past season, using Wordle.net. I pulled all comments from one article or episode poll from each month (September through May). I tried to select a variety of post topics and types of articles. If the comments ran to more than one page, I only used the first page of comments. The word cloud displays the most frequently used words in the text, with the word size being proportional to the frequency. (I swear I didn’t do anything to make “Sam” and “Dean” the same size.) Since I’ve had some extra time on my hands recently, I had asked Dark for posting privileges on Spoiler TV *evil laugh*, so I’ll be writing occasional articles, at least while things stay slow.
So back to season 6 –
Overall Story:
I'd give it 4/5 stars. I liked variety, the twists and surprises, and I loved what Ben Edlund did with Cas’s story in The Man Who Would Be King. I’d count among its strengths the continuity in how Heaven, Hell, Sam and Dean’s stories took off from where the failed Apocalypse left off. After season 5, the writers were left with a finished story, but instead of relaunching the series with an unrelated monster, the writers instead created chaos from the aftermath of the near-miss of the potentially catastrophic event. While some have criticized the fact that the angels’ civil war took place mostly off-screen, I thought that decision was wise in that it kept the focus on Sam and Dean. We only watched the parts that directly involved them, and I don’t think the audience as a whole would have wanted to watch an epic battle of angels in a fight that wasn’t the Winchesters’. There was also continuity in the way that Cas’s downfall was built on the personal issues he had been struggling with since season 4 – his absent father (God), the difficulty of angels adapting to choice, and Cas’s conflicted and strained relationship with Dean.
Personally, I like that the Supernatural story has expanded to include Heaven, Hell, and concepts such as death and fate. Having such a wide-ranging focus inspires debate on issues such as destiny, free will, spirituality, and the human soul. There's a danger that the mythology can grow so big that it becomes unmanageable, and the continuity suffers. And the show has shown signs of this. But the step back from the Apocalypse, and shifting the Heavenly focus toward human souls this season, succeeded in continuing the Heaven storyline while also pulling it back to put the focus back on humans, rather than the angels.
Areas where I think the story fell short included the dropped threads (Samuel Campbell, Heaven’s nukes, Sam's powers), answers that seemed too easy (killing Eve with Phoenix ash after stumbling upon the solution in the Campbell family library), and a lack of focus on meaningful character development for the two leads. While there was a bit of this with the Dean/Lisa/father storyline, that storyline suffered because it seemed to end about five episodes in, and then be revived later in the season in a forced manner. And while Sam’s storyline looked promising at the start of the season, the soulless arc never told us much about who Sam is and what he went through after falling into the cage. When Sam did get his soul back, it came without his memories. The horror of Sam's experience was built up so much that we were told that he couldn't function if remembered the truth. If he can't remember, he can't learn and grow. And this was his state through most of the season.
Pacing:
I thought this is where the season mostly fell apart, and I’d give this 1/5 stars, with the one star for having good enough sense to end the soulless Sam arc before the winter hellatus. The first half dragged after episodes 5 and 6, when we learned that Sam didn’t have a soul and that Dean and Sam seemed to be making little progress in getting it back. And then when we came back from break, instead of the Sam story moving forward, it stalled again until the finale, due to the wall that blocked his memories. The Eve/alphas storyline moved too slowly in the first half and then was rushed and given too little time in the second half. Finally, the Cas/Purgatory storyline seemed to drag through most of the season, only to be forced to share time with the Sam/wall story in the finale.
I think this show does a lot of things very well, but I think if its going to have so many large story lines going on at once, it needs to drop the habit of past seasons of stretching every storyline until the end of the season. In my opinion, Sam’s Hell experience should have been fully addressed mid-season so that he was given the time he needed to work through the angst and emotion properly, unless there was a practical reason for the delay, such as an important memory that had to be held until the finale. That way, Sam’s story could have taken a back seat when the Eve and the Purgatory stories heated up. I also think Sam’s story was cheated in Like a Virgin. I should have been bawling when the real Sam finally returned from Hell. Instead the focus was split between Sam’s scenes and Dean’s argument with a rock. Apparently, Sam’s Hell memories will be addressed next season, but I fear this is dragging on too long and a lot of fans will want to move onto something new in the fall.
As for Eve, she should have been introduced earlier. Even if this story was intended as a red herring, the mythology around the origin of monsters is interesting, and the dragons and their backstory really needed their own episode. The mythology around Eve also should have been better developed and given more time. Cas got a fair chunk of screen time in the last few episodes, but if the Sam storyline had been dealt with earlier, and if Lisa and Ben hadn’t made their Let It Bleed reappearance, there could have been more time spent building up the suspense around the angel war and around Cas’s deal with Crowley coming to a head.
Sam and Dean Moments:
I would give this 3/5 stars. Dean’s angst over Sam’s state in the first half of the season was comforting to watch. At least someone cared about Sam. And they had some nice brotherly moments in the second half, especially when it was demonstrated that unlike soulless Sam, souled Sam had Dean’s back time and again. But this category lost points with me for the especially painful soulless Sam moments - at one point I was convinced Sam was going to try to kill Dean in his sleep - and for the fact that their closeness seemed almost a little forced near the end of the season, compared with previous seasons when they weren’t afraid to argue or act like typical brothers.
Angst/Humor Balance:
I'd give it 2/5 stars. I like both angst and humor when they’re done well, but the sense of alienation and emptiness that pervaded the whole season detracted from both when they were present. There were funny moments in episodes like The French Mistake and Frontierland, and even Clap Your Hands if You Believe (I don’t have an issue with the fairies). But for me, the discomfort of watching Sam so broken sucked out all of the enjoyment of the first half, and it was hard to appreciate the humor. The funny episodes in the second half aired at times when I was getting anxious to see more Eve or Heaven's war action, so I was distracted, and again, the timing wasn’t right.
I think angst plays an important role in a drama. It's why we relate to and care about the characters. There was a lot of Dean angst when Sam was soulless, but without the brotherly bonding moments, a lot of this felt empty. The Dean angst over Lisa and Ben came too late in the season. I expected more earlier, when Dean first moved out, but instead got it long after I had stopped caring about that storyline. And there was little Sam angst this season because of the soullessness, and then the wall. The only angst I really connected to this season revolved around the break up of Dean and Cas's friendship.
High/Low Points:
For me, the high points were the Cas/Crowley interactions in the last few episodes. It may be wrong, but I loved watching the usually docile Cas turning badass and doing what he felt needed to be done, regardless of the cost. With this said though, I’m nervous about where the Cas/God storyline is going. The low point came in All Dogs Go To Heaven, when we heard Sam once again try to explain to Dean that he really didn’t care about him. At that point, I was done with that storyline and didn’t need to hear it again.
So that’s where I stand. Any thoughts? How would you rate season 6?

I absolutely loved season six and IDGAF what anyone else says. I loved Robo!Sam and all the storylines that came out of it. I can't wait to see what they do with Cas, and I'm excited for season seven!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone. This is my Spoiler TV publishing debut. Tell us what you think about season 6 and where it's strengths and weaknesses lie.
ReplyDeleteWow, that was quick! This post wasn't up for more than a few seconds! Glad you loved season 6, and for the most part I did too, even though I pointed out some criticism here. I give them a lot of credit for taking chances and trying something new, even if everything didn't go quite smoothly.
ReplyDeleteI loved season 6 as well. I agree on some portions floundering (the Eve storyline could have been much more interesting, if allowed to flourish), and some portions of the latter half did seem a bit forced. Overall tho, I still found it to be quite enjoyable (so far, Season 5 is still my favorite), but I very curious on how the writers are going to bring the Castiel story to a satisfactory conclusion. I really like Cas, and hope they give this character the justice it deserves. (not to be facetious!). Great job on the article Chris, and I hope you get the chance to write some more on our favorite hunters!
ReplyDeleteIt was truly a season that you cannot rate until you have seen it all. The first episode left me with a very loud (woke up the kids!) WTF WAS THAT?!?! I really didn't 'come around' to it until they established that Sam had no soul and they had to get it back. Then I could chuckle again rather than just the frustration and crying I was getting used to (my crying & frustration). I TOTALLY LOVE SUPERNATURAL!! (Should have said that earlier!) My first sigh of relief was, of course, Dean got back in his baby & Smoke On The Water is a new favorite song! Jumped for joy and woke the kids up again! I am a Dean girl all the way and Jensen is always awesome but Jared pulled off all the Sams he has had to be just brilliantly! He was just so good at being Soulless Sam that I actually miss him! I am twisted over the turn in Castiel but what an awesome jaw-dropping cliffhanger the incredibly talented writers have given us! We know that Dean & Sam will find a way to save/redeem Cas (RIGHT?!) but will we see him again after they do?
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the whole season again straight through, DVR's are wonderful, it all made perfect sense. Of course I wanted "our boys" to be just as they were but that just wouldn't have made sense, the story line they wrote for us did make sense, whether we liked it at the time or not. I read, and made, a lot of questioning comments at the beginning of the season but I take them all back....yes, Sara you were right! Sorry for those nasty vibes I sent, didn't mean it, really I didn't!
Awesome season! My favorite Sam and Dean moment of all time comes from season 6- when Sam is finally Sam again and we FINALLY get our real brotherly hug <3
Thanks for sharing Chris.
ReplyDeleteI agree about most of the flaws you pointed out, especially the pacing. But I forgive most of the mistakes because they tried to surprise us with a lot of new stuff and most of the time, it worked.
The low point of the season for me is definitely the first 5 episodes (except WAB, obviously). It just didn't feel like the same show at all, and they dragged out the evil-Sam storyline for too long. I'm not talking about soulless Sam, which I liked. At the beginning of the season they tried to shock us with this truly evil Sam, who seemed to like making people suffer, except he didn't behave the same way after we learned he had no soul.
I wish they had revealed the soulless thing earlier, as we would have had more room for Eve. I loved this character. She was a truly unique monster, and they killed her way too easily.
After episode 6 though, I really enjoyed the rest of the season, except for a couple of missteps. The brotherly love was back, and that's the most important thing to me.
They last 3 episodes were fantastic, and I haven't been this excited for next season for a long time.
My overall note for season 6 would be 3,5/5. Which is a big improvement over the 2/5 I'd give to season 5.
Thanks for the comments! My next article is going to be on Cas - a deeper look at his story. I already have a draft written.
ReplyDeleteThe first episode was what drove me online, looking for SPN websites to find out what was going on. I agree that the first half makes a lot more sense once you've seen the whole thing. I certainly appreciate those early episodes a lot more now.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments. I was intrigued by the mystery of what was wrong with Sam at the beginning, and I even liked TwiHard because it felt like things were moving forward - but for me the soulless Sam arc became unbearable around episodes 5-10. I'd say I started enjoying the show more around Caged Heat because that was when I started to feel like I could believe what soulless Sam was saying.
ReplyDeleteChris- excellent analysis and I agree on every point although I would give less stars to the overall story because I just couldn't understand what it was supposed to be...
ReplyDeleteI love RoboSam too. I thought he brought much needed humor to the show after the bleakness of season 5.
ReplyDeleteFantastic article. Can't wait to read more of your articles in the upcoming season
ReplyDeletelol. thanks for the comment.
ReplyDeleteA lot of great points here. I struggled for a while with the difference between monster souls and human souls and where Crowley really went if his bones had been burned. Maybe some of this will be addressed next season.
ReplyDeletethanks!
ReplyDeleteWow. Best post ever? This was like me talking to me about how I felt about season 6.
ReplyDeleteWonderful job putting this together!
Comprehensive, well-written, and damn professional. Outstanding job, Chris! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah I didn't like the way they handled all the different storylines. This could've been dealt with much more effectively and if it had been, and the pacing, etc. was right, this might've been the best season of SPN yet...but it just ended up dragging storylines around, and while I am ok with storylines like the soulless Sam, and Lisa/Ben, and stuff like that, I think that (while sometimes SPN fans overreact) a lot of it just made fans uncomfortable with the direction, and made things that wouldn't seem important be the main focus, and had most of the main characters doing things that would usually be construed as out of character. I understand the reasoning behind most of these decisions but because it was so clumsily done, it just didn't rub me the right way. Then there's the awesome ideas turn into bleh on the screen: I would've been fine with them fighting dragons, but I'm effing tired of seeing that all monsters seem to have a human form! Just keep the dragon out of the view of the camera the whole time! lol
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I think your comment is wonderful because you hit the nail on the head for all that was wrong with this season. I'll bet if they had more time to start a new storyline for the next few seasons, it might've been better, but it felt like everything was just thrown up on the wall and they went with the stuff that stuck there.
:D Don't worry I've notice the 50%, my countdown is in minutes and % and now we're closing on 53%!!
ReplyDelete"This was like me talking to me"
ReplyDeletelol. Glad you liked it!
I loved RoboSam! He was an extension of the Sam we'd seem glimpses of in the past (Mystery Spot in particular) - he was funny, scary and perfectly played by Jared.
ReplyDeleteI also think the return of Sam's soul came at exactly the right time. I had just reached a place where I was thinking: 'Ok enough already,' and the soul was back.
For my part, the loss of Sam's soul was an inspired way to point up the importance of the brother bond. Supernatural is now all the better for giving us the opportunity to see what life would be like without the brother bond intact - which was downright scary.
Cool article... good stuff :D
ReplyDeleteI always like to wait till the end of a season before passing judgement on how good, bad or indifferent it is. So, overall, I loved season 6. There were places where it was very rocky, but even then I was always left with a certain excitement: 'Oooo I wonder where they're going with this?'
ReplyDeleteEve was my biggest let-down of the season. While I thought the way they killed her was inspired, I never felt fearful of her.
That said, I loved RoboSam, I loved how Sam's soul was returned at the exact same moment I thought to myself: 'I've had enough of this.'
Having the brother bond back on track to end the season was a big plus. I'm also pleased that we'll get to see Cas in his new 'transformation' in S7, although truthfully I would have been just as happy if he'd been killed off. I'm not that interested in angels, but watching the boys deal with a delusional, wouldbe god Cas should provide some great entertainment.
Eve was a good character but if she would be the big bad that would be very predictable. The cliffhanger at the end of Mommy Dearest was a really WTF.I didn't liked that they killed Rufus and Samuel. And I would like to have seen more of the alphas. The problem of the new seasons is that is doesn't have and arc like seasons 1-5, i'm thinking that every season from here on now is gonna be a one deal. That doesn't botter me, i'm thinking that supernatural is going to be something like Hellblazer going on for many years. The Winchester are always gonna have enemies to fight. And sorry for my bad english, i'm argentinian.
ReplyDeleteSeeing a real dragon in SPN would be a jump the shark..
ReplyDeleteOverall i would give the season 4/5. It had it's perks but there where also some moments that i didn't like very much (Balthazar and Rufus dying). I can't wait for Season 7 though because of the S6 ending! This hellatus needs to end!
ReplyDelete-Great article by the way! :)
half over.... I think I died... THIS IS SOOOOO LONG!!!! First hellatus, sucks!
ReplyDeleteAw, you make me wanna watch the season over :P But I want to wait for the dvds... or not :D I liked it screw the haters
Really?
ReplyDeleteBecause the first scene had a real dragon the exact same way I described having the dragon in the first place.
You really think so? The show has had non-human monsters in the show before... The daeva... the hellhounds... poltergeists (not including the Season 5 monster that was actually a ghost). Of course all of those monsters' true forms were never seen on-screen.
ReplyDeleteSo seeing a real dragon off-screen in SPN would be right in line with what the show has done from the very beginning.
Exactly. Arguably to me the only way they'd be jumping the shark is having dragons at all... so they'd have jumped it even with the humanized dragons. The fact that they had an alright reason for the dragons kept it from being a jump the shark moment, so I think having it as an off-screen monster the whole time wouldn't have been an issue at all.
ReplyDeleteAt first I thought you were saying my article was too long, then I realized you were talking about the Hellatus. I refuse to look at the days, but I started a week count somewhere two or three weeks in. This Friday we'll hit 8 weeks left, which I think was the total length of the winter hiatus after the CW added an extra week on, deciding that we really needed to watch VD reruns instead. :P
ReplyDeleteI liked both Balthazar and Rufus - not enough to bring them back from the dead - but I wish they hadn't killed them off.
ReplyDeleteThere's the potential to do a lot more with the monsters this season, based on how things were left last season. The monsters were organized, and Eve was off the boys' radar for several weeks, creating lord knows what. So hopefully we'll see some scary stuff next season.
ReplyDeleteI wish they had done more with Eve, or at least found a way to put hold until this next season. She had great potential, but maybe in her time here she created something equally as scary.
ReplyDeleteOups, you most have thought I was a little harsh lol sorry hahaha!
ReplyDeleteYou know, you are not really helping by reminding me of this VD stunt *evil eye* Hopefully with the new boss this wont happen again :D
Hi, Chris, I thought your article was well written and your critique was excellent. You made some good points. I actually loved Season 6. There were times, I thought it could have been better, but I have said every season to date. I loved Robo Sam. There were times I wanted to strangle him. I hated how he hurt Dean, but his humor made me laugh. When Sam woke up after he got his soul back and he first faced Dean, that hug is burned in my memory. I'll forget it. Season 6 had fabulous moments. There are scenes I'll never forget. The emotions that we saw. The comedy. The loss. It was good drama. It was good brothers. I'm satisfied. I look forward to season 7
ReplyDeleteI thought that was a really good overview of season 6. I loveeed Season 6, most of the aspects in it were awesome! I was upset how Dean was treated by robo!Sam, but it was understandable. I'm happy to get back to "normal" in season 7, and I can't believe I have to wait until mid October to start watching it. =/
ReplyDeletei loved season 6 i didnt like the whole robosam part so it was off to a slow start but the 2nd half with eve and purgutory and castiel/crowley i really enjoyed overall though it hasnt been as good as season 4 and 5 heres my rankings
ReplyDelete1. Season 5
2. Season 4
3. Season 6
4. Season 1
5. Season 2
6. Season 3
Season 6 started out rather slow but it certainly got better as it went along. Crowley was definitely a highlight of the season for me. Only thing I am still wondering about was why they resurrected Samuel Campbell. I don't think the character was ever really given much of a purpose, nor was there any explanation as to why he was brought back fromt he dead. I kept waiting for an episode that dealt with that... but then he was killed off and forgotten about...
ReplyDeleteI also would have liked to have seen more of Samuel's story. They sort of answered the questions with the Crowley/Cas conversation about needing his hunter knowledge, but I expected there to be more to this story.
ReplyDeletegreat recap, love the word cloud, it rules!!!
ReplyDeletei reckon i agree with most of what you are saying here. i thought the season started off way too slowly. it felt like they were really trying to hammer in that something was wrong with sam but i found it was pretty clear by episode one, maybe episode 2.
the eve as a red herring was great and unexpected but i wish they had done more with it because i thought it was interesting and i would have loved to see that storyline continue.
i think overall there were too many filler episodes and not enough action and getting things done so it all felt kinda rushed towards the end
and i was also completely sick of lisa and ben by the end. i loved them at the start of this season but i quickly got over that probably by episode 5 when dean vamped out and went to say bye to lisa
still oumped for seaosn 7 b/c i know that wherever they take us it ill be awesome
I really agree with that. Sam trying to fake caring about anything or wanting to be fixed just had me as freaked out as Dean. I think it's weird because that was the writers' point and it was effective, but at the time I just construed it as awful acting. After he came out saying he really doesn't care at all it made me feel better though because "emotion" he was trying to do really just made whole episodes feel wrong to me lol
ReplyDeleteI really hope this is something that took place, because her experimenting in one town wouldn't make sense.

before anyone starts bitching, this is my opinion and my opinion only
can we still bitch about how you write everything in caps?
ReplyDeleteSeason 7 starts September 23. Are you going to be somewhere that you can't see it until October?
ReplyDeleteHa! Tell us how you really feel. We know it's your opinion, but I'm not sure why you have to scream it at us. All caps simply makes what you have to say hard to read.
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed this season, which is amazing because I was really scared of what would come out after Season Five ended. The Lisa/Ben storyline worked for me in the beginning of the season, but it could have ended earlier (The Mannequin 3 was my least favorite Supernatural episode ever.. I swear I will never watch it again)... The Third Man, the dragons in Like a Virgin and the Raphael story arch fell flat for me, but the epicness of Cas saved that last one! The Alpha story was insanely brilliant on the writers part and made the season for me. Eve was cool too, although her death was rushed. It would be cool if they brought her back in the future (don't dead monster go to Purgatory! doesn't that mean she'll keep coming back!). I also loved the soulless Sam arch, because it made his sacrifice in Season Five worthwhile. I loved him soulless and I loved that he came back halfway through the season. I'm curious about how the breaking of the wall will impact him in the future.
ReplyDeletemy caps lock button was stuck, then I fixed it and couldn't be bothered to go back and change everything
ReplyDeletelike i could ever stop any of you from bitching
ReplyDeleteI wonder about Eve's "death" too. Eve is something that supposedly has never been killed before, and the book just said that the Phoenix ask burns her, it didn't say anything about killing her. So how would they know? It's possible it just killed her vessel.
ReplyDeleteIt would be so awesome to have her return in another vessel to seek revenge against Crowley and the boys for sending her back to Purgatory... then they could have Crowley working with the boys again to stop her :P Not to mention how hard it would be to trick her twice... I doubt she would be as easy to kill a second time
ReplyDeleteI forgot to say, I found this great article about season 6 on SuperWiki which might clarify a few things for some people. http://www.blog.supernaturalwiki.com/?p=77
ReplyDeleteI was so impressed by it I would recommend it to anyone who calls themselves a Supernatural fan.
Got it. Technology is wonderful....when it works.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I'm the only who didnt really like the soulless sam part. Dont get me wrong. Jared did a great job, I enjoyed the acting and I liked the mystery of what was going on with sam. It was just too much after the "What happend to dean in the pit storyline" (which i looved).
ReplyDeleteI'm going to miss Lisa and ben though. Ben is a cool kid.And Balthasar... aaaaw.
looked good
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. That was a great analysis. For me, the issue with noir this year wasn't that I don't like noir. I guess I have a bit of a depressive personality, because I'm sometimes drawn to very dark pieces of fiction. I've watched enough noir films to have a general understanding of what the genre is about and to recognize some of those elements in Supernatural. The fact that I'm drawn to noir is probably in part of why I gave the overall story a 4/5.
ReplyDeleteThe question for me, when I read they were going with a noir feel for the whole season, was whether this much alienation and bleakness is right for Supernatural. There's a lot of love in the Winchester family, and I think that's what people mostly respond to. It's why people are so attached to their favorite characters, and it's why people get so upset when the brothers fight. To create that sense of complete disconnectedness and alienation to give it a noir feel, the creators had to strip away that love and warmth that is the heart of the show, which we got with RoboSam. And even when Sam came back, he wasn't all there. Some people really loved the Sam/Dean bonding moments of the second half of the season, but I didn't feel like they were as strong as they've been in other seasons. I wonder if the show's creators were holding back a little to keep some of the noir feeling going.
When I watch a noir movie, I'm more captivated by the bigger story and mystery than personally attached to the characters, so I don't mind the depressive feel so much. Fans have been watching Sam and Dean for six years and are very personally invested in them. I think it might have been too much for the writers to expect that the fans could just put that attachment aside for a while, and just appreciate the art of the bigger story.
