Spoiler TV: The Best TV Show Competition 2011 - Day 33 - Semi Final 1 - Supernatural vs. The Vampire Diaries

18 Jul 2011

Hey Guys,

Yesterday saw Firefly take the final place in the final four, showing how strong it's staying power is despite its short run on TV as well as the years that have past since its demise... Angel is confined to a top eight place nestling in behind Buffy which I'm sure is where many people feel it should be :P

Today sees the first of our Semi-Finals and it is a repeat of the 2010 Final as Supernatural prepares to take on The Vampire Diaries for the first spot in the 2011 Final... for those interested in last years Final The Vampire Diaries disappointed with only 15% of the votes whilst Supernatural strode home and took last years title. TVD fans have something to prove but can they begin to match the Supernatural army waiting to vote? In honour of last years Final I've used the same videos and text (adapted where needed) I wrote for both shows last year for a little bit of nostalgia for the STV fans...

The rules for, for anyone new to the competition are very simple. There will be new sets of shows against each other every day in a new set of polls... simply vote for your favourite and the show with the most votes will win that days poll and head into the next round.

Don't forget to spread the word, and tweet out the competition to friends as well as facebook liking the post...
Also if you are taking part in the prediction competition, don't forget to follow your scores HERE Long time leader Sergey Sevostianov is almost home and dry, on a stunning 112 points and sixteen clear of our new second placed challenger Zedd... Can anyone stop him?

All that's left to say, is good luck to every show...
... and let the battles begin!

Definitely Supernatural...even though i enjoy watching Vampire Diaries.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Can't stand Vampire Diaries personally (no offense intended of course) and from what I know, Supernatural is a lot of old X-Files writers...votes goes Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  9. No matter how good a show is, for me it can never beat Supernatural. So my vote goes there.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Wow, I hope the percentages stay like this! I voted for Supernatural, as I always will. :)

    ReplyDelete
  11. The Winchesters practically own my soul. Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Have only seen a few episodes of The Vampire Diaries and though it wasn't awful, it was no where near the quality of Supernatural.

    Very easy choice for me.

  17.  Mature by number of season because agewise they are the same age as jensen and jared!

  18. supernatural alll the way!!!! i tried really hard to watch vampire diaries i didnt get very far, i would rather watch the spoof on vampires on supernatural

    ReplyDelete
  19. guys u need to realize that spn has 4 more seasons than tvd, so the grounds of comparing the shows r uneven, the best way to compare them is either by comparing the first two seasons of both shows, or waiting for both shows to end and compare them then. but for now spn has dominance.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Supernatural all the way!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Supernatural.  It's genre show vs. genre show so TVD is going to need a few more seasons under its belt for and decent comparison.  Maybe next year, TVD.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Actually, if I were comparing the first season of Supernatural to the first season of Vampire Diaries, I would still vote Supernatural.  I stopped watching Vampire Diaries after season 1 but given that season 2 is my favorite season of Supernatural, it's hard for me to imagine Vampire Diaries would win there either.

I tried Vampire Diaries and to be honest, I think both Supernatural and Vampire Diaries suffer from the CW's reputation.  VD was better than I thought it would be and those who say it is just a knock off of Twilight probably haven't seen it.  However after season 1, I could not stomach the high school drama anymore and I hate love triangles.  The only two characters I truly liked were Caroline and Matt.  Whereas after season 1 of Supernatural, I was immersed in the Winchester world and couldn't wait to see their fate in season 2.  I was riveted to these two brothers and quite frankly, their car.  I loved the X-Files, Buffy, and others with a passion, but never had the summer break seemed so long.  The Winchesters grabbed me by the head and heart and haven't let go in 6 years.

  23. why why it has come to this :(
i cannot ever choose btwn TVD and Spnl.
my heart belongs to Salvatores as much as Winchesters
both shows brilliantly scripted and the actors bring it to life like no other.
TVD Season 2 was beyond epic and jaw dropping in every episode. Supernatural has always been and will b close to my heart.
sorry i m skipping this vote. cannot choose between my fav brothers

  25. Supernatural for me! and Yay for Firefly!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  26. I love Vampire Diaries but it's obvious that all of us that love both these shows are still powerless against the Winchesters. Supernatural gets my vote but I do hope VD comes in 6th or above :P

    ReplyDelete
  27. Vampire Diaries season 2 was much better that season 1 so hopefully when you get a chance you watch it. Caroline finally became a main character in S2 and she is amazing. The love triangle remains of course but they barely go to school in S2 :P occasionally Elena mentions it but the only times they are there is after school for a fight or something. The Winchesters will always win against the Salvatores but VD is still an awesome show.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Give it a 2nd try, cause the second season is 10.000 times better than the first. And i'm a fan of SPN.. really

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ha!  I could tell that from you're icon.  :-)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Actually, just talking about the characters, not the actors, wiki has Stefan at age 162 and Damon between 165 and 169.  Sam has about 150 years in hell plus his 29 on earth, so that makes him about 180 (the oldest).  Dean has 40 years in hell plus about 33 on earth, so that would make Dean the baby at about 73 years old.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Supernatural of course, I never really enjoyed Vampires Diaries.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh man, I've seen previews of The Vampire Diaries and it just seems sort of...Cheesy. Like a vampire degrassi or something.

    Anyways, still voting for SPN, I think it's taken control over my life OTL;;;

    ReplyDelete
  33. The show that would make me vote against the Winchesters, doesn`t exist! Supernatural all the way ;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I watched VD for the 1st season. By mid way through season 2 I'd had it with the romantic triangle - that's what the show is fundamentally based on and it irritates me no end.

My vote will always go to Supernatural - it's the only tv show in many years to capture and hold my interest. After 6 seasons I'm more involved than ever and can't wait for S7 to begin in September.
'Only' 67 days and 19 hours to go!  (No. I'm not obsessed - just very 'focused'. Well maybe just a little obsessed)   :D

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've been a loyal SPN geek since day one, but even I have to admit, TVD has been more consistent in terms or writing and continuity. Hopefully, I'll be able to say the same thing when TVD is in it's 6th season.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Let's try to get some great comments this round (makes it more interesting) and play the 1 Reason I Like game.  Both sides welcome.

1 reason I like Supernatural is the humor.  Whether it comes from a well-placed one-liner, a pop culture reference, or just a facial expression, Supernatural makes me laugh out loud.  It can be a tension breaker in a heavily dramatic scene ("If this is my last day on earth, I do not want it to be socially awkward.") or a whole episode based on meta ("Misha?  Jensen?  What's up with the names around here?").

Many times Supernatural is the best comedy I watch all week.  "I'm Batman!", "I lost my shoe.", "Low sodium freaks", "I like him.  He says okie dokie," "Don't objectify me."  and many others make me laugh every time.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Vampire Diaries is one of the few shows I follow regularly, but right now I have a hard time remembering even what it is...  ; )
Supernatural has my vote and that's not gonna change for a very long time!

    ReplyDelete
  38. This is gonna end up Supernatural vs. Fringe, guys. You know that, right?

    ReplyDelete
  39. I know it doesn't stand much chance against the Supernatural fandom, but I went with TVD.

TVD manages to fit more into each episode than most shows do all season, and they always manage to spring surprises on me that I never would have expected. The characters have grown so much in just two seasons and Nina Dobrev is doing amazingly well at playing her two characters who couldn't be more different, as well as the past versions of one of them.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Which TVD episodes have you seen? Because it took a while to get going at the start and the first few episodes were cheesy as hell. It wasn't until about 6/7 eps in that it started getting really good.

    ReplyDelete
  41. TVD started off cheesy, because like a lot of shows, it took a while to get going. I'd really recommend giving it a shot because after the slow start, it becomes really great.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'll play the game.
1 reason I like Supernatural (apart from the humor - which Dahne already talked about) is the great secondary characters:
The Impala - who is a rock solid presence in a world where anything can (and will) go wrong.
Bobby Singer - 'the guy who's pretending to be their father' - and who is more of a father than John ever was.
Crowley - because even though he's a demon, he's snarky, evil and lovable al at the same time.
And who knew angels are dicks? - Castiel, Zachariah, Anna and the rest have all added something to the story (had to mention the angels although I hope they're on the way out)
I could keep going - and I probably will - once I start it's very difficult to stop LOL

  43. i voted fo tvd as it is my all time favourite show but i have to say i am in love with supernatural these days i started watching it cause it had such a big fanbase here and i wanted to see what all the fuss was about and im so glad i did it truly is an amazing show! im just about to watch season 4 now but even though i love it i love tvd just that bit more as it has delena :) but not finished watching all the seasons of supernatural yet so who knows...

    ReplyDelete
  44. I'm really glad that you decided to watch Supernatural!
    And without spoiling anything,season 4 is my favorite!It all depends on personal taste,of course,but I don't think you'll be disappointed.. : )

And even though it's physically impossible for me to vote against SPN,I really enjoy VD!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Although I love Supernatural (because it reminds me on Buffy), I Love Vampire Diaries more.
    So I voted for TVD.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Reasons we like Supernatural..I'll try to keep it short!
Totally agree with what you guys already said about the humor and the guest stars!
My choice would be..the twists! The fact that everything can change in a heartbeat..
There are so many, but I particularly like the ones that can change the entire season in one episode..
We spent an entire season worrying about soulless Sam and Eve and in the end everything came back to Cas..
And my personal favorite:Angels LET the seals break and Lilith is the final seal!
    "She dies,the end begins!"

And just because I can't say only one thing,I love how the characters are so far from perfect and yet they remain by each others side..It may take some seasons at time, but it always happens! And it's gonna happen again..I'm confident!Actually,I'm not,but I'm praying every night for it..   :p
    Season 7 will be EPIC!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Go Supernatural! (I watch both, and am I fan of both, but I've been a major fan of SPN since the beginning. TVD just doesn't have what SPN has, IMO. It's good, but it's not up to the power of SPN.)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Gee, this is a tough one. TVD means a lot to me, especially since it opened the door to this whole gengre of TV shows (in general) again ... one I closed a couple of years ago - when I was already in love with Supernatural.
Both are good shows, with amazing storylines, characters & cast , dialogues, twists, suspense, mythology, emotion, comedy (yes, even that) ...
Well, they are my top 2 shows for a reason.
Yet, Supernatural is the better show. I'm not saying it'll always be this way. But it's gonna be in its 7th season this september, while TVD will be in its 3rd. Supernatural had more time to grow and my fave seasons are 3, 4, 5 ... granted, season 6 was a little bit weird at times whil TVD had a really kick-ass season this time that left me nothing but speechless very many times, but ... but. Nevertheless, I voted for Supernatural. Not an easy choice, 'cause voting against either show is difficult.

  49. PUDDING !
I hope your apple pie is freakin worth it
    ;)

    ReplyDelete
  50. Omg, thank you so much for that fun piece of information XDD Reading your comment really made me laugh a lot.
    ... Dean the baby ... *g*

(But I've got a question: How can Sam have about 150 years in hell and Dean only 40? Dean was in hell longer than Sam. Speaking in "our time", Dean was there for 4 months while Sam said he got pulled out - minus the soul - quite soon after he jumped in. Or are we talking "+ Sams-Soul"? Just curiou.)

    ReplyDelete
  51. The Vampire Diaries, but honestly, i dont care couse i dont watch TVD or supernatural and my bracket sucks :(

    ReplyDelete
  52. Haha I totally loved this! A really enjoyable and funny piece to read. Thanks for posting. ♥ lol

    ReplyDelete
  53. Dean's body died on earth and stayed on earth and rotted in a grave on earth. His soul went to Hell for 40 years. Sam went to Hell body AND soul. Not long after, Castiel pulled his body, but Sam's soul still remained down there. His soul is the REAL Sam, not his meatsuit/body/whatever, so yes. Sam was down there for much longer than Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I guess what you're mentioning here is actually a think that's really keeping a lot of fans to SPN ... you and many others say one thing they don't like about TVD (and other shows, for that matter), are love triangles or just too much love-drama in general.

SPN's a show about 2 brothers. Though there are women now and again, the basis of the show is always the idea of family in general. Not family as in "two persons who are meant to be together find each other and are madly and crazily in love and would do everything no matter how crazy and dangerous it might be to save each other's lives", but just the family-version of it. Dean & Sam. Then Bobby. Then Cas. Ellen & Jo. (Let's ignore the slight Jo & Dean love-thingy) it's all about family. No relationship drama that is being shown so many times on TV.

That's one thing that seems very very unique for Supernatural and I'm sure it is also something that keeps a lot of viewers to the show. 'Cause even though there is drama, it's completely different.

And also: As others said before. Give TVD Season 2 a try if you ever find the time to. It really is better than season 1. Yes, there's still the love triangle, yes, there might even be a 2nd love triangle, but everything they tell in season 2, from the history / background about season 2's "big bad", till the character developement is dealt with really interestingly and less dramatic but more ... real, imo. It's just a natural developement, rather than some rushed, sudden feelings. You see it happening and understand why it's happening which makes it a lot less annoying, at least that's the way I think about it.

    ReplyDelete
  55. The twists were going to be my second reason because just like you it makes me love the show that much more.  Just watching the Family Matters episode alone, there are more twists than most shows pack in a season.  I spend half the time laughing and the other half yelling "What!"  Not a season goes by without me being Kripked at least a few dozen times.

    ReplyDelete
  56. This is an easy one. Granted any poll with Supernatural is easy pick for me. But I need to chime in again how I really did give TVD an honest try. I watched all episodes before the last Christmas hiatus and that's more chance than I'd given any other show. It's just that the story and writing didn't hold for me. One thing I love about Supernatural is the consistency of the characters. Dean is so well established you could put him in any situation and you'd know how he would react. Same goes for Castiel, Bobby and Sam (unless without his soul, which you still would know even though it would be different from actual Sam.) With The Vampire Diary characters, even after watching so many episodes, nothing was established. Here is my proof:
    [Spoiler Warning]
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
Stefan started off going after Elena because she resembled this other woman from his past. That told me he must have had really strong feelings for that woman. But as I watched I realized the woman was a vampire and Stefan actually hated her guts!!! Why would he be so obsessed with the doppelganger if he couldn't stand the original?

Damon on the other hand was supposedly evil but then for the most part he ended up helping the other two, who hate his guts. He too seems to hate Katherine. But then we find out both he and Stefan became vampires because they *loved* Katherine, and even got exposed and cast out by their family because they went to save her!

On top of that, Katherine is evil but it's never explained why it is so and why the brothers went from intensely loving her to intensely hating her. Sure she killed a number of people, but haven't the brothers? Unless the show is trying to tell me these vampires lived off of animal blood their whole lives I don't see Katherine doing anything outside her nature.

It's this kind of disjointed plot development that irritates me about the show. It's like no one sat down and wrote this. More like they get together for a quick meeting before the shoot, throw some ideas on the table, and string them up with moon stones and magic potions and special jewelry to plug the holes. It's not consistent, and therefore not memorable.

There's no doubt some great talent in the cast. Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder are great actors. Especially Nina who has the tough task of playing dual roles and does a great job of it. I also like Candice Accola as the very interesting Caroline, especially in season two.

If they had stuck with a solid story - had that story even been the love triangle done well, with all of its ups and downs and not this hacked off, is-he-or-isn't-he, mess - I would have became a fan. As it is the idea had potential but the writers took it and turned it into a Christmas turkey. They should really consider taking some creative writing classes.

  57. Ok, I'll admit that I sometime watch Supernatural for the eye candy.  That '67 Impala is a thing of beauty unequal to anything else on TV.  I can watch her just drive down the road.  My heart pumps when I hear Back in Black because I imagine her fixed and shiny in season 2.  Her unveiling in Two and a Half Men made me gleeful, and when she surpassed Sam's piece of plastic, wheels squealing I felt a vicarious thrill.  Now that's my kind of eye candy.

Oh and Bobby and Crowley rock my world too.  Hey, they should get mark Sheppard to guest star on VD.  I'd definitely watch that episode.

    ReplyDelete
  58. My biggest problem is yes the love triangle.  My second biggest problem though is that I HATED Stefan.  It's hard to enjoy a show when you're wishing the main character would die..again..um, really die and never grace the screen again.  Then came the teen drama.  I just don't see how season 2 can overcome my utter loathing of Stefan and annoyance with Elena.  I honestly think I'd like a spin-off series better.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I was going to put in Pudding, but the objectify line makes me laugh harder so I went with that one.  So many good lines in this show.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Scary how many one liners found their way from Supernatural into my real world. Even scarier is, how many people stopped looking funny at me when I use them.
Lines I really used (mostly at work):
    - Demons I get, people are crazy
    - Assbut (and man, had I some explaining to do!)
    - Don't go away angry, just go away! (and it worked. Surprised to this day)

One of the non-ending reasonson I like Supernatural is the music:
I usually switch to another station when Asia-Heat of the moment is on the radio and laugh out lout at "Eye of the tiger". I have "Back in black" in my car (though the experience is not so exciting when you drive a little Hyundai Getz) and every morning I am on early shift and off to work, I paly "Highway to hell".

  61. Good to see the votes, comments, tweets & facebook-likes flying this round! :D

  62. I LOVE assbutt!  Ok that didn't sound right LOL. I love the term assbutt - there that sounds better. :D

    And I like 'spectaculacular'.

And all those songs mean so much since Supernatural used them. Smoke on the Water is another one that chokes me up now.

  63. Eat it Twilight!

  64. My heart belongs to Supernatural!! :) so clearly my vote goes to Supernatural!!

  65. What Kyelinn said. :)

  66. They all look really good for their age.  Don't they?  ;)

    ReplyDelete
  67. That would be the third reason I was going to mention.  The music brought me back to music I hadn't heard in years and mainstreamed some favorites.  Except for Cold Case, I rarely find a TV series that did such a great job of matching music and plot together as seasons 1 and 2 of Supernatural.  Now that we have a head of the CW who likes Supernatural perhaps we can get a bigger music budget AND grab a piece of the CW advertising budget Supernatural has been denied for years.  Good times ahead.

    ReplyDelete
  68. LOL they do! I'd love to look that hot when I'm 180 years old. ;D

    ReplyDelete
  69. It does make the round more interesting and a whole lot more fun!

    ReplyDelete
  70. So I had to go with Supernatural because it has basically taken over my life since I started watching it last summer! And I did watch Vampire Diaries during its first season and I actually really enjoyed it but I didnt get a chance to keep up with it this year because it plays during some of my other favorite shows and I just havent had time to catch it online yet.

And I love the supernatural video you have this time. It makes me want to go rewatch the whole series right now =]

    ReplyDelete
  71. Considering this is a poll for your "favourite" TV Show, you don't need to just compare two seasons side by side or wait until they're both complete. You just need to choose the show that is your favourite. It's as simple as that.

I could watch ten seasons of Smallville and just two episodes of Buffy and the latter would still be my favourite of the two, purely based on writing, acting, direction, storytelling, plotting, cohesiveness, structure, humour, etc etc.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Caroline is the main reason I watch TVD. Her character growth is seriously some of the best I've seen on any show.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Elena doesn't get much better in Season 2. However, the actress does get to play the badass doppelganger, who is much more interesting.

Stephan does get a little better than in Season 1 but, ultimately, Damon and Caroline steal this show. I'd recommend watching just for those two.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Supernatural always gets my vote.  I'm addicted to the Winchesters and Bobby.

    ReplyDelete
  75. 'Dean - always with the scissors' :D

    ReplyDelete
  76. I would say Stefan gets a lot more bad ass in season 2. Elena remains annoying but Nina Dobrev is amazing as Katherine who is a great character though she's a bitch. Caroline becomes a whole lot more interesting and Damon as Hungry Emo wrote is the reason I watch this show. His eyebrows are also fantastic actors who should be added to the cast list :P

    ReplyDelete
  77. I enjoy both show immensely! But my vote goes toward Supernatural!

    ReplyDelete
  78. It's a tough choice...I've watched both from the jump, and love both so intensely, but I'm gonna give it to VD, because it simply amazes me that someone could make up for crap like Twilight :)

    ReplyDelete
  79. Aggie, just curious, but what got you into Supernatural last summer?

    ReplyDelete
  80. "Just watching the Family Matters episode alone, there are more twists than most shows pack in a season"
I would definitely agree with this. Love that episode. However, (and keep in mind, SPN all the way people!) That's the same reason I enjoy TVD. You've yet to see season 2 as I understand it: every episode plays out that way. Every single episode is nothing but twists and turns...Outside of the awful love triangle, (it's become a secondary source of entertainment for me: comedy-wise) there really is a good story here (and at some point even Lauren Cohan is a part of probably the best episode of the series so far) and it does (much like the shows SPN and Fringe along with others) figure out what kind of pacing, plot-line, etc. it will go through and it FINALLY gives us a few characters that are not only NOT annoying, but kind've awesome. (But of course they give us a few more characters that are nothing but morons...Once again, adds some comedy in there)...

    ReplyDelete
  81. Supernatural. Just cause ;) I mean, too many reasons to name.

btw, I really love the video this time. It shows perfectly how family is the real core of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  82. If you had watched a little longer, you'd probably have answers for your questions. Seeing how they designate like 1 out of 4 episodes to give more and more details about the past... That's like getting fed up watching SPN season 1 at Christmas because they hadn't found their dad yet.

    ReplyDelete
  83. Tough one as I am a big fan of both shows. but I have to go with SPN... good luck to both

    ReplyDelete
  84. Wow! What a great story.  Thanks for sharing how you got into Supernatural with us.  I have to say that Ghostfacers is one of my least favorite episodes of all.  If I had started on that one, I would never have watched the show again.  I'm glad your sister was persistent and encouraged you to give it another shot.  I did love Monster Movie though.  It's in my list of best episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  85. The first 4-5 episodes of TVD are worse than anything I've ever seen on television. seriously.
    Just ridiculously bad.

    ReplyDelete
  86. I loved the season 4 twists and reveals. I mean, first we found out about the angels. Then about Lilith breaking the seals and the threat of Lucifer and the Apocalypse. Then about Dean torturing souls. Then about the torturing souls being the first seal. Somewhere in between about Sam drinking demon blood and being able to kill demons. Then about the angels letting the seals be broken. And in the end about Lilith being the last seal. And I absolutely adore the Lucifer Rising Dean/Cas conversations, they're just written perfectly and include some of my all time SPN favourite lines.
I know many people dislike season 4, mostly because Sam and Dean grew so much apart then, but you just gotta love it for its twists and mysteries and how they're being revealed step by step all season through.
and then they actually still continue in season 5, with the boys being the vessels.

I just hope they can build such a solid story arch again. I'd say the second part of season 6 was a pretty good start for it ;) cannot wait for season 7, I have no idea where the hell it all is going!

    ReplyDelete
  87. I agree with emmy, as even though they do incorporate some of the tropes of cheesy teen-ish situations: the love triangles et al, the one thing that I really appreciate is the sheer number of storylines and the robust pacing the showrunners take to achieve resolution and then introducing a new one. I never feel bored with this show.

    ReplyDelete
  88. The tension breakers are priceless! One of my very favourites is:
    "I shot the sheriff..."
"But you didn't shoot the deputy" xD
And it's in the middle of one of the most tense episode ever on the show!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Misha Collins is a starring in season 6 too... But anyways, my vote will always be to Supernatural *o*

    ReplyDelete
  90. That one was classic.  It still makes that scene for me even though I've seen Jus in Bello maybe 100 times.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Supernatural of course.  I am a fan of Vampire Diaries Damon is great.  But I have followed the hunters much longer than I have followed the vampires.   I wish them both luck, but it Winchesters all the way.

    ReplyDelete
  92. OK Wilson, you know me.  You know how much I hate emoangsting and teen scene drama.  You probably get why I hate Stephan so much and why Elena annoys me.  I think Damon is overacted in season 1 too so he comes off as a caricature instead of a character to me.  But you also know that I love action, a fast pace, twists, and humor.  Am I likely to like VD if I invest another 930 minutes of my life to it?  Season 1 felt like a waste overall to me although it got much better at the end.  I don't want to waste my precious summer TV time if I'm going to want to throw my remote at the TV at the end of the season.

    ReplyDelete
  93. I'd say that season 4 and season 6 had the most twists.  In both seasons it felt like a roller coaster of sorting through the lies to get to the heart.  I'm not as big of a fan of season 4 or Dean/Cas conversations as you are, but season 4 was definitely a wild ride and it fundamentally changed Supernatural and the story it told.

    The Vampire Diaries.

    No, just kidding.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Well I was bored and looking through the guide on the tv for something to watch and I had heard of it cause I watch a few shows on the CW and I noticed it was playing on TNT so I looked up what episodes were playing next and it happened to be Dead in the Water and Phantom Traveler. So when I looked it up online to see where in the series those episodes were I realized they were 3rd and 4th. So I looked up the pilot and Wendigo online so I would be able to start from the beginning and after a few episodes I fell in love with it and went and bough all 5 seasons so I could be caught up in time for when the new season started in September.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Less than 12 hours gone and already 3,300+ votes... Supernatural leading by 59%... This one could go all the way to the wire.
The Vampire Diaries is doing much better so far!

    ReplyDelete
  97. I disagree. I was actually fed up with Supernatural in season one mostly for the same reasons. I kept wondering what the show was about: Brothers looking for their dad? Sam looking for revenge for Jess? Brothers following in the footsteps of dad trying to continue the Family Business? Then came the season one finale and all three Winchesters got together and suddenly patterns started to emerge. By the end of the finale I finally knew it: That this was a show about two brothers fighting evil and life circumstances to keep each other alive and keep the family together. Suddenly there was an underlying thread of love and trust and hope and sacrifice. That's what hooked me. And that's what kept coming back and getting stronger throughout the seasons, ending with the statement, "Family doesn't end with blood," is season six.

Had I gotten even a little bit of that with TVD I would have kept watching. But I didn't. In fact I dare you to make the same analogy for that show.

    ReplyDelete
  98. That's cool because I started with the pilot but hooked on the show with Dead in the Water.  I was wondering if it was TNT that did it for you.  It seems that almost every new fan I've talked to  has gotten into Supernatural because of TNT.  We certainly owe that network some thanks.  Perhaps SPN fans should send them a gift basket.  :-)

    ReplyDelete
  99. I love both shows, but it wasn't even a choice. My heart belongs to the Winchesters and their Angel

    ReplyDelete
  100. Thank you for mentioning the angel. He doesn't get enough love after that heart wrenching season finale.

    ReplyDelete
  101. This isn't hard at all. I watch both shows, but honestly, I think TVD is a little overrated.. yeah, it has a really good and original storyline, and the actors are just fine and stuff.. but I just haven't gotten that same attachment to it, that I have to most of my other shows. I haven't cried a single time while watching it, and I wonder what I am missing, since everybody else seems to love it so much.. this is just how I feel, so please don't hate me for saying it.. x]
Anyway, no show has ever made a bigger impact on me than Supernatural. The character stories are AMAZING, and the whole storyline alone blow my mind. The actors are FANTASTIC, and they have made laugh like crazy and cry like a baby more times than I can count!
So my vote obviously goes to Supernatural. :)
    It changed my life.

    ReplyDelete
  102. ...It's your call. You know I hate that stuff as well. I was just giving you my thoughts on season 2.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Michele Klinger18 July 2011 at 03:51

I watch both, but SPN is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better. Yes, both shows deal with more than the normal drama that other CW shows deal with (relationships mostly), but Supernatural is still so much different from every show on that channel

    ReplyDelete
  104. Wow. So... You say that you didn't get the underlying thread of the show until the finale... "Then came the season one finale..." sounds like what I said still holds. You gave SPN 11 more episodes than TVD... I'm not going to claim anything like what you're trying to make me say. (and I wouldn't claim that you'd need to give 11 more hours to this show necessarily either...) Calm down, I'm just saying it becomes more exciting and less insipid as it goes on. The finale of Season 1 of TVD had a similar moment that the SPN finale did that just left my jaw open, and while I wouldn't say it's near the caliber of SPN, I don't think that it's as awful as some people make it out to be. (It certainly started out awful, but it's much much better...) There is some RIDICULOUS stuff here and there but mostly I see some good plot devices, great flashback episodes (mostly in season 2 that show the TRUE nature of what all was what back then...) and actually the opposite of what the brothers of SPN had for their father: He tried to kill them when he found out they were fraternizing with Katherine, but instead he tragically ended up being the instrumental person in turning them into vampires and then ending up as Stefan's first midnight snack when his plan backfired. The whole brotherly love thing that comes here and there in the show is extremely derivative of SPN, as are a lot of things in the show, but that's sort've why I enjoy it... A ball in the middle of a gorgeous meadow turns into a fiasco when someone's spinal cord is ripped into two... It becomes kinda gruesome and more enjoyable for me at least. The characters Caroline and Katherine are just so well-done...they finally give us a legit reason to care (because I couldn't care less for the Damon-Elena-Stefan triangle... BLEHHH) and from there, things get interesting...

    ReplyDelete
  105. My two favorite T.V shows! D:<
My vote is still for Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Sounds like a plan.  I'll NetFlix the first DVD when it comes out and if I roll my eyes so hard my head hurts or throw a pillow at the TV more than twice, I'll stop.  If not, I'll keep going.  :-P

    ReplyDelete
  107. You misunderstood my comment. I gave TVD the same chance as SPN (particularly because of my experience with SPN.) I watched the entire first season and half of the second season. I watched it up to the point when Rose was bitten by a werewolf and all that talk about Klaus started. Then it went into the Christmas hiatus and I stopped caring.

The parts you are describing, the ball that turned bloody and the Katherine/Damon/Stefan interactions were the parts I actually liked. I thought the show was getting good and patted myself on the back for sticking with it that long. Then I strapped myself in for an awesome ride. But oh holy lord was I disappointed. The writers of this show don't seem to be able to stay with a theme or storyline to the end. They just toss an idea in and before it can grow and become interesting cut it short (usually by having Damon or Katherine kill a character,) and move on to something else. Nothing, and I mean nothing of the previous plot threads had been resolved when they cracked open the big international vampire crisis (or whatever that deal between Elena and the super old vampire Klaus was.) I didn't want to move on to that storyline when they had unceremoniously dropped everything, from Elena's birth mother, to her uncle, Tyler's father, Tyler's uncle, Katherine, Jeremy's first two girlfriends, and the LOT of vampires and other supernatural creatures that kept weaving in and out of the story.

You've pointed out a lot of good snap shots of the show. I particularly agree with you on Caroline and Katherine's characters being interesting(although they could have given Katherine a less convoluted and cliche background.) But you still haven't answered my question: What is the underlying theme of this show that would make me care.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I actually got into it through word of mouth. A friend of mine recomended it and I rented the DVDs.

i can't stand twilight either, i thought all the books and movies were crap. and i totally agree that the first few episodes of VD are very much like twilight, they're not very good. but once it passes that point, the show really is epic! its just unfortunate that there is a point that needs to be passed

i also loved ian as boone in lost :D

  111. Sam wasn't in Hell, he was in Lucifer's cage. We don't know if the time in cage and in Hell goes identically. So we can't say how long Sam's soul was in the cage.

  112. OMG I cant choose between supernatural and the vampire diaries !!! They are too good tv shows ( :

    ReplyDelete
  113. I see this is going to be a good match.
Best poll so far, but hopefully Supernatural wins.

    ReplyDelete
  114. Sorry. I completely messed up that post!

In reference to the fact that Sam and Dean were the more "mature brothers", I just meant that the four actors were the same ages and I should have written Ian and Paul instead of Jensen and Jared.

Your post is correct, however,  everything should be based on the characters' facts and experiences and nothing else,  regards

    ReplyDelete
  115. This is much too close for my liking...How many hours left?

    ReplyDelete
  116. Wow, this is closer than I expected...come on Supernatural fans, vote like you're being paid for it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  117. LOL!
Where have I heard that before??Was it Pirates of the Caribbean??
But yes, that is too close..I hope it ends soon..

  121. both shows are hot,the actors on it grrrrrr ready too eat but spn boys fisical take my breath away.

    ReplyDelete
  122. voted for Supernatural, the best.

    ReplyDelete
  123. I didn't mean to sound like I was correcting you.  Just making what I thought was a humorous observation about the characters' ages.  :)

    ReplyDelete
  124. I've seen first 2 eps of TVD and I have no idea why my guyfriend who watches shows like Luther, The Wire, Dexter can like and watch TVD. Seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Dante (which Supernatural seems to be borrowing from) has Lucifer in the ninth circle of Hell, the worst part of Hell.  The characters in the story have also suggested that Sam went to Hell several times.  Castiel says he went to "Harrow Hell" to retrieve Sam.  It's true we don't know if time flows differently in Lucifer's cage, but in Sam's brief flashback in Unforgiven, he was only out for a couple of minutes, but when he woke he said if felt like a week.

    ReplyDelete
  126. This is much, much too close!

    ReplyDelete
  127. Oh ok so you did make it that far lol The underlying theme is BING. Wait? Bing? The search engine? Can't be right... The underlying theme is AT&T MYFI...personal wifi connection. Wait...no? That's not it...

lol I think that says it all don't you? I enjoy the show but if you've seen that much and agree about the good and the bad and it wasn't enough to keep watching, then I don't know anymore than you do. :P

    ReplyDelete
  128. Supernatural. Never watched TVD. I'm sure its an awesome show but the 'lovey dovey' stuff in any series kinda pushed me off. Something like I'm an 'Angel' fan but never a 'Buffy' fan.

    ReplyDelete
  129. I think this is the hardest challenge for Supernatural in this competition since the semi-final last year against LOST.

    ReplyDelete
  130. The Vampire Diaries

    ReplyDelete
  131. Supernatural forever and always

    ReplyDelete
  132. Ok how you have 4,000 votes in still not safe. lol

    ReplyDelete
  133. I don't watch either. I know these shows both have big fandoms and eather way it's going to end with a lot of people unhappy. I voted for Supernatural though, because I can.

    ReplyDelete
  134. I've known TVD for over a year now and love it, but recently I started watching SPN and... Winchesters own my heart so much it hurts. My vote goes for them... The epic brothers.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Yeah, Firefly only has half a season, and I would still like to see it win this year.

    ReplyDelete
  136. The closesness is makin' me itch. O.o

    ReplyDelete
  137. Because it changes later in the show. Especially around season 2. It shares writers with Breaking Bad, and even Buffy if I remember correctly. It's surprising actually the talent behind the scenes on this show...Still it's not without it's extremely outright flaws.

    ReplyDelete
  138. I`ve never watched a show with so amazing one- liners like Supernatural!  ;)

    ReplyDelete
  139. u just tried 1st two epis of tvd and ditched it.
it gets better with epi 4.
TVD is today's 2nd well crafted smart written shows and acting is brilliant. every epi of season 2 were like cliffhanger and had big big jawdropping moments which made our heart strings tear out.
u should definately not compare it with twilight coz its million times better and weel acted than that. plus TVD has some decent storyline which twilight lacks.
and i have to say this. the similarities between Dean Damon and Sam Stefan r little bit similar if u compare the parallels between the. both older brothers r smart  cocky shoot first ask questions later type while younger bros r rational emotional cool headed. but they love each other to death.
Damon and Stefan may have their differences but wen time comes they will always b there for each other and save each other.
both the shows relies heavily on family values and wat matters most.

  140. I finally had to go to bed because the whole thing was making me too nervous.  Not that I'm not nervous now but at least I'm well-rested for it.  No more nail biters because I'm already to the point of nail bleed.  Let's rally the troops Supernatural fans.  We've got work to do and less than 2 hours to do it in.

    ReplyDelete
  141. How much longer do we have left for this poll?

    ReplyDelete
  142. watch this and decide. TVD is one of the best shows of today just like SPNL
evry moment tears u and kills u.
do not term this as teen show and ditch it. its dark very very well acted plus its more than just a high school drama. worth watching.
evry single epis have so many twists and turns the jaw is always in floor

  143. Slightly over an hour I think.  We need to make a major push for 500 votes in 1 hour.  Surely there are some websites out there that don't know about this poll.  Contact all your SPN friends, especially overseas.

    ReplyDelete
  144. Haha, yep. Gibbs says it. In the 2nd one I believe when the crew has to push something round. Maybe it was the 1st. I'm not sure. But anyway, come on supernatural. <3

    ReplyDelete
  145. Wow how is this even a question? SPN all the way.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I find it ironic that two CW shows that are usually laughed at for they low ratings have clocked the largest number of votes in this whole competition *individually.* House and NCIS and Glee and Lost and Bones may dominate in the Nielsen Box charts, but these CW shows own the Internet legions. I wished the rating system that decided a show's chance of survival wasn't so medieval. This poll alone proves the handful of families that own that box are by no means a representation of how popular a show is.

    ReplyDelete
  147. LOL the Bing reference. I was like, "No they didn't. Did they really turn it into a verb?" But yeah, VD is popular enough for those sponsors, which means it has to plant that crap in its script but at least it gets the money, and money means budget which is good for a sci fi show. But then again, the writers could have been more subtle.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Less than 1 hour.  Supernatural goal - at least 257 more votes.  We can do it.  Keep the votes coming Supernatural friends from Brazil.  We love you!

    ReplyDelete
  149. Supernatural always and forever! :D

    ReplyDelete
  150. I'm just surprised that he kept watching it after those terrible first episodes. And he did say so himself, that first episodes were terribe.

    ReplyDelete
  151. Just switched on the computer and I was worried that the VD might have overtaken Supernatural!
Glad to see that it is still holding on.

    ReplyDelete
  152. :) Don't worry, that's why we had a Live free or Twi-hard episode, it was to show that Twilight can't beat us

    ReplyDelete
  153. Would be nice to see it hitting 5000.
If the vampires and the Winchesters met up I know what the outcome would be!
    Vampire heads would roll.

  155. The myfi thing in the last 2 episodes was freaking ridiculous. I laughed my ass off when Jeremy started video chatting with Bonnie. I was like... I don't think so...not in a haunted house in the middle of nowhere...I know better than that ATT! You definitely don't have service out there...

    ReplyDelete
  156. yeahhhhhh we won!! whoohoo!!!! :D:D:D

    ReplyDelete
  157. The only reason I watched it is because I was too excited for SPN (which came right after TVD) to wait around so I just tuned into CW about 30-45 minutes early and eventually it caught my attention.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Wow, am I seeing things or did this poll really register 9,249 votes? That's impressive.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Never so glad to see the polls closed tag in my life.  :-P  Great job to both sides.  Just a reminder that today is the Fringe vs Firefly vote and the winner should face Supernatural tomorrow for the title.  Let's keep the energy high and the fandom engaged.

    ReplyDelete
  160. XD I should try that next time

    ReplyDelete
  161. Although I was dreading the Fringe face off (the online fandom is strong and they fight to keep the show on air,) seeing these results makes me not that worried. Gosh, are we legion. :)

    ReplyDelete
  162. hahaha :)))) we won yupieeeeeee

    ReplyDelete
  163. What a fight! When I got online first time today, and it was maybe 11 AM, Supernatural was leading with 287 votes. (Yes, I was making notes, I have no life). It was slowly dropping until it reached only 178 votes. When I had to leave Supernatural had 196 votes more than TVD. When I got back online TVD was behind by 442 votes. Voting ended with Supernatural winning by 599 votes! It's 7:30 PM.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Ha!  If it were just one fandom versus Supernatural I'd say we could breathe a tiny bit easier.  However, it is likely to be ALL fandoms after SPN because many people do not want Supernatural to win another poll.  It will be our biggest fight, but just like the Winchesters we rally when we're on the run and fight until the end.  Get those contacts ready because I don't think it's going to be a cakewalk like last year.

  165. Maybe you can take notes for the final too.  It would be interesting.  Hard to believe it was ever that close but Supernatural fans do best in hot water anyway.

  166. Congratulations to all, that was a crazy poll! There's a bit of irony to having the most voted on poll so far be between two CW shows!

And yes, I voted for Supernatural (as if you couldn't guess ;-) See y'all in the finals!

  167. I was watching it all night (10:50am here) I couldn't believe how it just fell all night! I think the turn around happened around 4hrs before the poll closed.... that was one long night! I think it's great you're keeping notes, I like seeing how it changes... from past polls, I was expecting a morning upswing (as the US woke up) but it happened later than I thought it would!

  168. I don't think it will be either! I think I'll be tweeting every hour trying to roust out support!

  170. I thought the same thing (and managed to double post about it... no, I'm not sleep deprived at all LOL) I do think that networks might be starting to look at ways of judging popularity other than purely Nielson ratings...(I hope)

  171. Just curious but does Spoiler tv notify the eventual winners in any way?

Do you send them and e-mail or a certificate or an award or anything?

I'm sure they would be happy to know they have won in a poll even although it is an unofficial one.

  172. It shouldn't be any problem, as I don't have much to do at work lately XD

  173. You're right, Supernatural got another 200 votes around 4 hours before the poll closed. That's what my notes say XD I went out for groceries and when I got back one hour later, Supernatural had over 400 votes more than VD.

  175. we won, supernatural always the best

  176. That makes sense; 4 hours before poll closure is roughly when America woke up. I'm in the West Coast so by the time I got online the lead had been gained. I think it was simultaneous with North (and South) American fans getting online and starting their tweets.

  177. Have to admit I was seriously worried when I went to bed last night. VD put up a great fight. Now we need all the help we can get to hold off the Fringe fans.
    Supernatural fandomly you ROCK!!!!
Thanks Adam & Andy for putting us through this hell (although as SPN fans we should be well used to it)
