Good luck guys... tough voting day ahead I feel...
ReplyDeleteChuck the biggest surprise versus SPN the perennial favorite. Wow!
ReplyDeleteI've seen them both and it is Supernatural that gets my vote. No question.
ReplyDeleteI like Chuck, but I love Supernatural. Simple.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, someone asked me about the pilot season competition yesterday. Didn't you initiate that one too? If yes, what's the current status of it?
ReplyDeleteOh crap this going to be a crazy day. lol
ReplyDeletereally tough choice being that I love them both :( but I went with Supernatural because it is my first love LOL
ReplyDeleteSupernatural is ONE vote behind..I don't think that's ever happened before... :p
ReplyDeleteIt's gonna be a long day!Supernatural all the way!
This is gonna be a tough round! Supernatural gets my vote. It's my first love. Has been for 6 years.
ReplyDeletesupernatural is the one that is team player love 'em :)
ReplyDeleteSupernatural!!!
ReplyDeleteLove both shows, but Chuck is going to need votes so I gotta vote for it.
ReplyDeleteWow chuck is winning. I've never seen Supernatural behind on a poll before
ReplyDeleteIt is a very odd thing to witness!
ReplyDeleteSupernatural is losing??? Noooooooo!!!! XD
ReplyDeleteThis is one of those rounds when you try in figure out how do you beat yourself. lol
ReplyDeleteSupernatural in Chuck is both equally hardcore.
I voted for Supernatural, but who ever get a pull at the end will win.
Im supporting Chuck this time. Supernatural is a good show and i watch both. But i have to base it on the stronger show this season and i believe chuck had a better overall season.
ReplyDeleteNerd Herd Unite!!!
It will be very close so I hope people choose the show they like best because there will be no room for pity votes today.
ReplyDeletewow they are tied neck to neck... with chuck winning by 1 vote! love chuck!
ReplyDeletetough choice,, i like Chuck but i love SPN!! so my vote goes to SPN
ReplyDeleteI didn't expect the votes to be so even, I thought SPN would have a huge lead given it's massive fanbase on here.
ReplyDeleteWooo~! Go Supernatural!
ReplyDeleteBoth fandoms have a big fanbase, and they always play each other close in every poll they meet. So im diffently not surprise with the results.
ReplyDeleteThis is really gonna be a tough round they're so close! But for me, Supernatural all the way
ReplyDeleteI'm voting for Chuck in honor of the final (upcoming)season. Besides, Supernatural had a really weak season. It's hard to ruin a fan-favorite character but they pulled it off.
ReplyDelete@AdamdHarris:disqus Is there a way to keep track of the lead changes today? I bet this could be one of the closer and most lead changed filled contests!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately not. Someone would have to note down the scores manually every
ReplyDelete30 mins on so.
Me too, both shows are great in my opinion and it was hard to pick.
ReplyDeleteIs it a threat?
ReplyDeleteHmm .... well I am interested , but not THAT interested! XD
ReplyDeleteLOL
ReplyDeletewow really really close! do we have figures of the closest polls in the competition?
ReplyDeleteSupernatural for me! (by now, it's losing for 2 votes, I didn't expect to see that )
ReplyDeleteI just noticed that both tribute videos are SPN's , where's Chuck's? :P
ReplyDeleteMaybe some obsessive (I mean that in a good way) fan of SPN or Chuck will be refreshing the poll and keep notes?
ReplyDeleteAny volunteers?
Ok... back to A Dance with Dragons...
ok im going to go ahead in be a geek since I cant sleep after watching Silence Of The Lambs. lol
ReplyDeleteSince the past few hours i counted 12 ties.
Whoa. Didn't think Chuck and Supernatural would be so close in the voting right now.
ReplyDeleteI voted Supernatural, for the pure reason it's been consistently better.
All I can say is.. Oh my god, let's make Chuck win this thing.
ReplyDeleteno contest for me, supernatural all the way :D
ReplyDeleteI voted for Supernatural (as I always will) but I will be totally fine with Chuck winning. Both are amazing shows and what fun is a competition where one show wins every time?
ReplyDeleteThough choise for me. Especially because I was a bit underwhelmed by season 6 of Supernatural and I really liked the last few episodes of the season of Chuck.
ReplyDeleteBut overall..... I think Supernatural is the better show.
Supernatural without question.
ReplyDeleteOf course not. Just stating that I expect this race to be very close and break the record for number of votes so far.
ReplyDeletenow it's fixed... don't know if it was real or a problem with my computer XD
ReplyDeleteThis is close! I voted for Supernatural. But seeing Chuck getting so many votes, I might wanna go and watch it during my summer holidays. Sounds like a good show.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural!
ReplyDeletevote for chuck =D!!!!!
ReplyDeleteVoted Supernatural. Didn't believe it would have been this close.
ReplyDeleteSUPERNATURAL!
ReplyDeleteSUPERNATURAL!
ReplyDeleteOkay Supernatural fans, this is the doozy. Chuck fans wants this bad. They are close. Supernatural fans can't let them have this. This is going to be a touch one. Let's not let the Chuck have this. We only get one vote and this world wide. Get the word out today. Post this everywhere on all of your pages.
ReplyDeleteAnd it is. You better watch it:)
ReplyDeleteGuys this is a neck and neck race between Supernatural and Chuck. Seriously. We don't want Chuck to beat out the boys. There are people on here who say that yeah Supernatural is USUALLY better but they had a weak season and Chuck was just better this year. The boys gave us good stuff this year. Robo Sam was awesome. Fight the Faeries was great. I'll be eternally grateful for Dean in in cowboy clothes. The stories weren't bad. We got Balthy and we got of Crowly And we have season 7 coming. Let's get out there and back them. Vote.
ReplyDeleteOh man, that SPN video is heart-wrenching! The song is gorgeous and fits so well with the show!
ReplyDeleteI like Chuck, have been a fan of the show for a long time but Supernatural is perhaps the best show I have ever watched. It has depth, great characters, great story lines, humor- it has it all.
Your admitting Chuck's been been better this year but still demanding people vote Supernatural?
ReplyDeleteSo true! this vid is so beautiful! <3
ReplyDelete"Sammy its ok, i'm here, i'm here i'm not gonna leave you" oh mannn :'( :'(
Supernatural should be winning by WAY more - caught a bit of Chuck once and it seemed really boring. Whereas Supernatural had me hooked from the first glance. GO SUPERNATURAL!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI like both shows a lot, but this past season of Chuck has been meh while Supernatural ramped it up after their mediocre S5. In general, I have always felt that (besides S5) Supernatural was a more solid show than Chuck.
ReplyDeleteNot any more! :D
ReplyDeleteWell said Jensenfan - no way anyone can beat the SPN fandom and the best show on TV!!! :)
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, SPN Season 6 was not a weak season - I loved it! VOTE SPN!
ReplyDeleteDang...Already getting up to 1000 votes?
ReplyDeleteThis is gonna be a really long day. O.o
Good luck to both Supernatural and Chuck fans.
I voted for Supernatural (I know, shocking right?) and I think I'm going to go hide now because this could get messy.
I remember NCIS had a few hundred votes over SPN last year for a few hours. And then I think LOST had a big lead before they closed the gap.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Just have to add, that trailer alone shows how superior Supernatural is!! WOW!
ReplyDeleteSupernatural all the way for me.
ReplyDeleteChuck has a very strong fanbase here. It's always up in the air around finals because shows you think are the top pick just fall against the "underdog"...
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Chuck quite a bit. I seem to have a hard time getting REALLY invested but most episodes I've seen have all been nothing but fun.
ReplyDeleteThat Was hard voted for Supernatural but i love Chuck too :)
ReplyDeleteFrom what I understand, he's saying a lot of people think that Supernatural was weak this season, but he doesn't think so. He thinks this season was great.
ReplyDeleteI remember a lot of Chuck fans claiming that they completely jumped ship from the show this season as it was really weak, but I've also heard a few Chuck fans say it was one of the better seasons.
See how subjective this stuff is?
Both great shows but had to vote SPN
ReplyDeleteSupernatural is ONE vote behind..I don't think that's ever happened before... :p
ReplyDeleteIt's gonna be a long day!Supernatural all the way! Taken from: SpoilerTV http://www.spoilertv.com/2011/07/spoiler-tv-best-tv-show-competition_12.html#ixzz1RtjDUiv6
Chuck TV Show Expert, I have to vote for Chuck...(plus, I'm not really a Supernatural fan).
ReplyDeleteWhere are you looking? SPN is currently winning with 63%!
ReplyDeleteI voted for Supernatural, since it's still the best show on TV to me (dialogues, atmosphere, stories and storytelling).
ReplyDeleteAll of a sudden Supernatural took a serious lead.
ReplyDeleteDamn I love you Chuck but Supernatural owns my soul!
ReplyDeleteWhy??Why are you so eager to burst my perfectly shaped bubble?!?! ; )
ReplyDeleteTruth is,I didn't know about the site last year..You're probably right!
Glad to see Supernatural gained the lead ;)
ReplyDeleteSupernatural---Numero Uno!!!
ReplyDeleteSupernatural hands down. Best show on TV right now.
ReplyDeleteIt did kind of jump, didn't it...haha
ReplyDeleteThere isn't a show past, present or future that I love more than Supernatural! It will always get my vote.
ReplyDeletenext year we should really not mix finished shows with current shows because current will always get more of the vote since they are current. U should seperate the 2 into a competition to make it fair.
ReplyDeleteIt was! But the fandom fixed it! lol :D
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only one. I also think season 5 was the weakest season and that season 6 was a much needed reboot. This year we got away from overwhelming angst and got the brothers working together again. Plus I thought RoboSam was really funny. Season 6 has made me that much more excited about season 7 because there is so many possibilities for next year.
ReplyDeleteWooww.. I thought SPN left behind :D
ReplyDeletewow i love and chuck and voted for it but i think it has no chance to beat SPN
ReplyDeleteSupernatural. There is no better show than SPN. I find Chuck too annoying to watch.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural all the way! It's up by over 1000 votes right now but you never know what can happen. Our boys can defeat anything!
ReplyDeleteChuck is on now... just about to switch over, what is with all that crazy music in the background!? lol Supernatural is surging ahead here now!! SO happy, keep spreading the word Winsisters! :)
ReplyDeletenot for me, Supernatural... I havent watched Chuck, but I have heard it's good though
ReplyDeleteWhat was going on while I was sleeping? I just found out about this poll and came here to vote for Supernatural. Cast my vote and expected the two to be neck and neck, but...Supernatural is 1300 votes ahead! Not that I'm complaining, but I think I missed out on the good parts of the race. Hopefully SPN keeps its lead.
ReplyDeleteChuck.But I know it doesn't stand a chance.
ReplyDeleteWoash... thought this would be more competitive! Guess a lot of Chuck's votes last round were also Supernatural fans more :P
ReplyDeleteNo matter what the Joss Whedon shows, Fringe or Vampire Diaries can do, I think Supernatural is gonna be tough to stop!
Yeah... I'm gonna announce the winners between the end of this competition and the start of the character competition :D
ReplyDeleteThe biggest surprise for me was when Dean Winchester lost in the character cup last year so early on... I'm sure such an incident is unlikely to happen again :P
ReplyDeleteIt's looking less close than we both expected :P
ReplyDeleteDidn't quite work out that way in the end it seems... unless Chuck find some fans and fast :P
ReplyDeleteDean lost in the character cup?!?!?Careful with how you say these things,I think I just had a tiny heart attack... :p
ReplyDeleteDo you remember who beat him?Or who won in the end?
And you're right..I don't see something like that happening again!
In all fairness, someone hacked that contest and ended up voting 1,000's of time. It wasn't caught until after Dean was out of the contest. I maintain that he lost because of it. :-P
ReplyDeleteJack Shepard from LOST won I believe.
I wouldn't count Chuck out yet. They are very good at the last minute win and I expect their votes to rise when Americans are off work. Supernatural fans, do not get complacent. Keep spreading the word.
ReplyDeleteAirbat, Chuck is a fun show. It's light and for me, good summer fun. It won't take the place of Supernatural for you though.
ReplyDeleteI agree! At least judging by my twitter timeline, Supernatural fans seem to be much more active drumming up votes this round. It's been fun to watch how the race has gone... I wouldn't be surprised at all if Chuck makes a comeback.
ReplyDeleteIt's Supernatural all the way for me! I've only seen a few eps of Chuck & I've liked them, but I have to vote my heart :-D
ReplyDeleteWith no evidence to back it up, I seems that Supernatural has the larger international base while Chuck has a larger US base. Currently, Americans are working but many people in other countries have finished for the day. I'd expect in a few hours, Chuck votes will start snowballing. Whether Supernatural wins will be determined by how many votes we are ahead before that happens.
ReplyDeleteEasy pick today. Supernatural. Ghuck is also a great show, but SN is just simply amazing, with it's relationship with religion and how they make fun of themselves.
ReplyDeleteI always seem to root for the underdog ... Chuck
ReplyDeleteWith no evidence to back that up except my own European vote, I tend to agree with you as in this precise moment its nearly ten past nine p.m.
ReplyDeleteI would hope however, that the US Supernatural fans will start voting after work and not just the Chuck ones.
regards
Easy vote for me..... CHUCK
ReplyDeleteMe too. So the best thing about this contest is we get to explain why we love our show and maybe convince someone new to try it. We got Adam to try last year. :-) So Supernatural fans, why should someone new try it? I'll go first.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural is a show that defies labels. It has something for everyone in each show. It is not uncommon for the show to start as horror (or gross) but move quickly to humor or drama. It can make you laugh out loud one minute, cheer the action the next, and leave you sniffling at the end. Raising Hope is my favorite new comedy but there are many times when I've laughed harder in an episode of Supernatural than I did in it. The drama of it sells the show, especially the bond between the brothers. This is the story of two heroes that routinely sacrifice to save an ungrateful world. They literally face heaven and hell to defeat evil on both sides. But Supernatural is also not above making fun of itself and poking at fans. They can take the weirdest story ideas that you just know are going to be a mess and make something genius out of it. For me that is the best part of Supernatural. Just when you think you know where things are going, the cast and crew throw you for a loop again. I'm the type of person to run hot and cold on a show. I like it passionately for a couple of years and then get bored and move on. Supernatural is the only show that has not only kept my attention, but I am just as excited about the show now as I was in 2005. That is quite the feat!
My suggestions - If you like horror movies and standalone episodes, start watching season 1. If you like more serialized and mytharc shows, start watching at season 2. If you are willing to give Supernatural a one-episode try only, watch A Very Supernatural Christmas. It is not the best episode (although it's high on my list), but it does the best job of highlighting all the things that make Supernatural great.
But...how long does it take to cast a vote and then go back to work? This isn't one of those poll that you can vote over and over. It shouldn't make a difference.
ReplyDeleteWhy has the Supernatural vid suddenly turned into a Chuck vid? That's so weird.
ReplyDeleteOk scratch that - refreshed the page and it's back to normal.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural all the way.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but I'm thinking some people will not know the contest exists until they check in with their favorite websites after work.
ReplyDelete:-) I'm sure Supernatural fans will continue to vote as they hear about it. I just think that Chuck will be closer at the end of the match than it is now.
ReplyDeleteI love both shows but I have to go with Supernatural. This show is amazing-its one of the best shows on tv!!
ReplyDeleteThat is about as good an answer as any9one can give on why someone should watch the show. It's everything, every reason why we watch. The acting, alone is tremendous. If anyone in Hollywood ever took the time to really see the incredible talent these young men have, they'd be trying to take them away from the show. I'm grateful will still have it.
ReplyDeleteAt this point it is.
ReplyDeleteDemons I get... technology is crazy!
ReplyDeleteI disagree with that. I'm sorry. There is never a bad Supernatural. Might not be a favorite, but never a bad.
ReplyDeleteWell, with 4201 votes so far, it has definitely taken the number one spot for Voted in Polls.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a couple of Chuck episodes and I liked what I saw, but... Supernatural is just in another league. For me it beats anything for its:
ReplyDelete- family value and brother relationship, the best ever created on TV
- horror roots and storyline twists
- awesome choice of guest stars
- ability to mix comedy with tragedy
- ability to mess up with religions and urban legends and our heads
- ability to break the 4th wall and make fun of itself and other shows
- little details and unforgettable objects, like the Impala, the Dean-isms, the amulet etc.
and for so much more...
what can I say, I love the show to pieces, it rocks my world and I love my boys so Supernatural FTW!!!
by the way, Game of Thrones finishing 9th, ahead of LOST and X-Files and other classics is freaking impressive, considering the number of episodes it had so far...
ReplyDeleteI never said supernatural was bad. I just don't think this season was it strongest compared to last. It deserved best how last year. However I think this season chuck was stronger
ReplyDeletefirst of all, why you are saying it here, under a competition of 2 CURRENT shows?
ReplyDeletesecond, last time I checked, Buffy, Angel and Firefly were finished shows and they all made it to QF
so, what is your point again?
Way to pull out ahead SPN fandom! Last night it was nailbiting to watch these two go back and forth by a couple votes every few minutes. I actually feared that would be how it would be all day long until the very end. But can't rest on our laurels now, keep voting so they don't get a last min surge.
ReplyDeleteYes it had... Supernatural has been huge today, it's gonna be tough for Chuck to even get 40% of the votes in my opinion...
ReplyDeleteOoh. It's a TV Guide cover competition rematch. (and it's not going well for Chuck)
ReplyDeleteSurely I can't be the only person who has watched every episode of the the first five seasons of Supernatural and have never been impressed by any of it, the only show that I have never understood the hype for. Twin Peaks, The Wire, X Files, Buffy...I've loved them all. Its quite sad to see Chuck losing, the chemistry of the cast on Chuck is the best I've ever seen on television and how they manage to balance comedy and drama so perfectly. Well I suppose its Fringe and Buffy all the way then
ReplyDeleteYou don't understand the hype for it cause you dont like it everybody got there own taste.
ReplyDeleteI have seen all the shows you stated, and im behind Buffy in X files.
In believe it or not people think Buffy was over hyped. too.
It's hard to add anything to that. Very well said, dahne.
ReplyDeleteAside from all that I also like that the protagonists are credible. They are heroes but they bleed, they suffer, they cry, the get to their breaking point, they have faults - in short: they are realistic, aside from all the crazyness they are dealing with.
When they suffer, I suffer, which, of course is due to to the great acting, as jensenfan1978 so correctly said.
Also, I like the surprise element of the show. Even after six years of watching, when I thought I saw everything, I am still getting surprised. On no other show in my life (and I've seen a lot) have I used the sentence "I didn't see that coming (now lovinging turned into: I've been Kripked)" as frequently as on Supernatural.
And they (the producers and writers) are not afraid to try out something new to keep us entertained instead of going back on the well known formula. One may like it or not, but it sure kept the discussion going this year!
I cannot wait for next year, and, if we're lucky, some years afterwards.
The first part of season 6 had plenty of angsty overkill... Almost worse than season 5...
ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing. Possibly the GoT book fandom has recently discovered this site? Or perhaps enough of us here fell in love with the series? The show IS also a long time best-selling series, so it's in its peak for general hype surrounding the end of the tv show's first season and the new book coming out this week (TODAY?)...So It could be due in part to that.
ReplyDeleteIt's all personal taste. Although I would say I find it odd that you cite Chuck's mix of comedy and drama while it is also a very popular aspect of Supernatural as well. I'm also surprised you dislike it because of the other shows you've listed. Supernatural has a pedigree that's rather impressive, as while Kripke might be new to the tv world with SPN, Kim Manners, and a few others I believe all came from The X-Files, and it is obvious that BTVS and the X-Files are prominent sources of influence on Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I loved season 6, RIP RoboSam. And funny, but I also loved fight the faries (I know many didn't), and no doubt about the western epi. Dean beeing like a child on christmas about the good old west. Posse magnet!
ReplyDeleteGranted Season 6 started out to be confusing, because it was new territory and the boys where acting differently. It left me feeling confused at the beginning. But I got used to it and enjoyed it and I trusted the writers that at the end we will get answers. And we did.
If you were not impressed, why did you continue to watch? Something kept you coming back for more.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural is really gross. Chuck all the way!
ReplyDeleteNothing ever will, sorry all you other good shows, but I only got one great love.
ReplyDeleteThat doesn't mean, I don't watch and enjoy other shows as well. As a born TV junkie, I would wither with only one show to watch, so whenever I get a tip, I at least try it out and sometimes a new flame sparks like White Collar. I will try Chuck!
Total Votes: 4,647 !! this is getting insane! lol
ReplyDeleteSupernatural!
ReplyDelete:) What can you say? The fandom is like a racehorse; the more you put pressure on it, the more you came close and ask for a fight, the more strenght it will find to come ahead at the finish line
ReplyDeleteHa! For me, nothing is worse than listening to Satan crying and whining about his Daddy issues.
ReplyDeleteThe new goal is for Supernatural to have more votes on its own than the formerly highest rated poll had together.
ReplyDeleteGlad you mentioned the guest stars. Without such superb actors as Mark Sheppard and Jim Beaver the show would not be the same. They do an awesome job of bringing the most fun people to our screen.
ReplyDeleteSupernatural can be very gross and many times I bury my head under a pillow. However, if you go beyond the gore, there is a great story about perseverance, sacrifice, determination, and free will. It's got a lot to say about the positives and negatives of family and what it means to be a hero. There's a lot of depth to Supernatural that can be easy to overlook because of the horror or gore factor. I hope you give Supernatural another chance. Just close your eyes when the gore comes. :-)
ReplyDeleteI don't really like the vid that they chose to represent Supernatural- I mean ya the show has all that heartwarming stuff in it but we need to show a wider range of what the show is- it also has action and humour and so much more that video just didn't do it justice :/
ReplyDeleteI love this one.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0xzN3pZaLU&feature=channel_video_title
Supernatural is here to WIN IT ALL :P
ReplyDeleteSupernatural by itself is about to outdo the total amount of votes in the current "Most voted poll" btwn Game of Thrones & Buffy...
ReplyDeleteOnce I start watching a show I have to finish it. Its a watchable program but it never becomes more than just watchable for me, the mythology has always bored me so whenever I see the overhype about it I have never understood why it is. When it wins a competition called The Best Tv Show and none of the proper classic shows never even gets a look in then the whole competition seems a bit pointless. I like Dean's character but Sam has alway been so whiny and dull
ReplyDeleteIt's been a mighty performance!
ReplyDeleteApparently, we're in a voting mood tonight XD
ReplyDeletePoor Chuck.
ReplyDeleteI was a tad wary this morning when I came on-line, remembering what Dahne said yesterday of the possible resurgence of US Chuck voters after working hours, but I see that is not so!
ReplyDeleteHowever, It does seems strange to me that so many fans rally to this poll and yet as far as the Supernatural tv ratings go there doesn't seem to be the same result.
With all the fans that the show has I would think i should have better ratings which are so important for the continuing life of the show, ( at least for the CW ) regards
It's like Sophie's Choice all over again. Gah! Sorry Chuck.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I am exceedingly glad to be wrong in this case. Nice work Supernatural fans! As far as ratings go, the biggest problem Supernatural has is that international viewers don't count. Supernatural has a large overseas fandom, which makes polls like these awesome but do nothing for ratings. We won the TV Guide cover on the basis of the international fans. Although I don't have statistics, my guess is this also had a large number of non-American voters. The other problem is that only a small percentage of Americans are part of the Nielsen system so they don't count either. I would be shocked if even 15 of the voters here counted in the ratings. Until there is another way to convince advertisers to pay for shows, Supernatural will suffer from lower ratings than the online presence shows.
ReplyDeleteFantastic job Supernatural fans! Great job passing the word. Next round is Saturday against either NCIS or VD.
ReplyDeleteI get the problem with the Neilsen system as we have the same system only it's called Auditel here and I have never met anyone yet who has one of these mysterious boxes!
ReplyDeleteIs the CW a free tv or is it part of a pay for view? Are there any free channels in the US at all?
I wonder does the CW take into account the overseas viewers as they obviously are aware of them , due to polls like these where you can only cast one vote and cons and such, and does that get taken into account for the show's continuation?
I'm English and I voted SPN, I love it, best show ever!!! I know of people from all over the globe who adore it too - and I don't actually watch it on TV coz I love it so much that I can't take the ad breaks, so I watch it online for no interuptions. They need to start taking all of this into account when looking at viewing figures!!
ReplyDeleteIt's not gross, there are horror movies out there 1000x worse! I can only think you're very young!??
ReplyDeleteGod you're strange, when you start watching a show you have to watch every single episode in every single season?? Never heard anyone say that before! I'm sure you're not literally the ONLY one, but you are in a vast minority!!! As far as balancing humour, drama and action, I've never seen a show do it like Supernatural does! Please take some advice and don't watch Season 7 only to moan afterwards because you know you will!!
ReplyDeleteThe CW is network TV so it is free. It gets its revenue strictly from US advertising so international fans do not earn it one cent. That's why they don't count to the CW or the ratings. However, the CW is made up of 2 companies - CBS and Warner Brothers. Because Warner Brothers owns Supernatural, it is in their best interest that Supernatural stay on the air. They care a lot about overseas viewers because they have the rights to the DVDs and all the merchandising. Every time you buy something officially Supernatural, Warner Brothers makes money. It's this dichotomy that puts Supernatural in a tenuous situation. I have no doubt that if someone else owned Supernatural, it would have been cancelled already, especially since Dawn Ostroff came from the other side of the network - not WB.
ReplyDeletePardon me if I rephrase the question but I know nothing about the ins and outs of the subject matter. Does that mean that the CW gets no share of the introits from the sale of dvds etc but only from the ads even although it shoots the show? The introits only go to Warners who are the owners of the show but they do not participate in the ad income. Have I got ir right?
ReplyDeleteSo we have to thank WB if the show is still on the air?
I'm pushing 40 and I find Supernatural to be very gross sometimes. While I'm sure there are other movies and TV shows out there that are more gross, it doesn't mean that Supernatural doesn't gross me out. The Third Man had some gross outs big time and the couple eating each other was vomit-inducing. I watch Bones which I thought was as gross as it gets, but Supernatural has surpassed it on occasion.
ReplyDeleteThe CW doesn't shoot Supernatural. Warner Brothers (WB) does. They own the rights and sell it to the CW. (Probably at a discounted rate, especially in the earlier years) From what I know, the CW gets the ad revenue but it pays the WB to show Supernatural. The WB gets DVD and marketing profits and more importantly sells the oversea markets and syndication rights. So the 2 reruns that are shown of Supernatural on TNT every weekday actually profit the WB but not the CW. Once Supernatural ends (in 10 years), the CW will cease to make money off of it but Warner Brothers will still get DVD sales, marketing, conventions, overseas sales, and of course the syndication rights. That's why TV shows try to make it to 88 episodes even if they are struggling. At 88 - 100, the studios that own and produce the shows can ask for higher syndication prices. They can go for upwards of a million dollars.
ReplyDeleteI don't wanna sound shallow, but sometimes the gross and the gore is what makes an episode for me. I mean, I'm all for brotherhood and free will and stuff, I'm also all for ghosts and demons, but a little bit of gore from time to time is quite enjoyable for me in its twisted way :P
ReplyDeletefinally more than 5000 votes!! it's great, don't think I'm saying the opposite!! but it's insane xDDDD
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking the time to explain to a neophyte like myself!
ReplyDeleteIt's all quite complicated really but I'm starting to get my head round it now as you have explained it really well
.
So, in theory WB, holding the rights, could sell the show to any network, just as it does by selling the re-runs to TNT.
As for shows trying to get to the 88 episodes I don't understand why networks like Fox cancel their shows after one season or only a few episodes. That can only bring loss to them not profit. There have been lots of shows that I have stopped watching because I heard they were going to be cancelled. It's like biting off your nose to spite your face!
Even if the ratings aren't so good at the start I feel you have to give a show a little time for the viewers to get attatched to it!
Same here. It's definitely not the only good thing about SPN, but it's NEVER something that detracts from how awesome this show is. I think that the gross stuff is one of the very best aspects of the show.
ReplyDeleteI wish I was still in the Nielsen system!! I was able to watch several episodes this year on the TV that counted in the ratings, though...Wish I had it still just for Supernatural!
ReplyDeleteI don't watch it on tv I just buy the DVD's. I started watching it when season four was airing because my friend loved it and so i bought one to three and never could really understand the hype at all then I heard that Season four changed direction in the story so I kept buying it and whilst slightly better it just never wowed me. I've only ever watched two programs that i didn't like and one of the shows was Supernatural and whilst some shows I liked better than others Supernatural was always the one I liked least. I'll probably keep watching it now just because I want to see how it all ends
ReplyDeleteIt's the eternal question many fans ask. However, high profile networks like Fox earn upward a million dollars per ad spot for high rating shows like American Idol. If a show is struggling in ratings, and is costing them money to produce, they cancel it to fill its time slot with something that brings instant cash instead of thinking about later revenue from syndication. There are of course exceptions. Last season their SciFi contender Fringe did pretty bad in the ratings yet it still got renewed because they smelled a strong fan following and thought it worth going for the golden 88.
ReplyDelete"I have no doubt that if someone else owned Supernatural, it would have been cancelled already."
ReplyDeleteI highly doubt this. It's true that Supernatural's ratings are low compared to shows that are on high profile networks such as Fox or NBC, but as far as CW goes it does pretty well. It's their second highest rated show after Vampire Diaries. Also the network is aware of the fanbase and that's partly why they moved the show to Friday, which is both a curse and a blessing. If they cancel Supernatural, any other show they put in its place (other than VD which they will never move from its prime time spot,) will be killed instantly. They rather stick their secure fan favorite in that spot to give their struggling shows a chance on better nights. It means even lower ratings for our show, but it also means they have to keep it in order to have something that could survive on Friday nights.
While what you say is true for right now, it was not always true. I doubt we would have made it to season 4 if Supernatural was owned by anything but the WB. In season 2 and 3 especially, Supernatural fans had a good reason to feel anxious about the state of their show. It was underperforming and fans worked hard to campaign for it. I believe that is one reason why we are able to win polls like these. The fandom is used to banding together to fight for this show.
ReplyDeleteNowadays, you are right. I expect to see Supernatural go into the 8th and 9th seasons if ratings stay the same. The CW cannot afford to lose a foundation series when it scores higher ratings than their newer ones. Speculating that 23 episodes means cancellation makes absolutely no sense to me. Winning the TV Guide cover alone would have made it difficult for the struggling CW to abandon the show. Combine that with being the 2nd highest scripted show now that Smallville is over and the fact that it's fans will follow to Friday like you mention makes Supernatural more safe now than it ever has been. From someone who has followed the show since day 1, it is a relief to see it in such great standing with the network. I have high hopes for Supernatural under the new regime.
I'm still surprised that Fringe got renewed. I'm glad for its fans. However, if the network does not own the show, there really is no incentive to renew it to reach 88. They don't get anything from syndication. The network has to make enough ad revenue from a season to justify paying for that season because they aren't getting anything from it down the road. In that case, fans have to hope that the studio that owns the show will reduce the price so much that the network can still make money with low ad revenue. That's my guess as to why Fringe will be showing next year. It buys the studio time to win more fans and get them a sweeter syndication deal.
ReplyDeleteA little too late to post, I know, but I voted for Supernatural!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteChuck's good, but Supernatural's better.
ReplyDeleteSUPERNATURAL without a doubt!
