Spoiler TV: The Best TV Show Competition 2011 - R3 - Day 28 - Bones vs Angel & Firefly vs. How I Met Your Mother

11 Jul 2011

Hey Guys,

Yesterday was a huge day for the competition in terms of votes... Buffy showed herself to be one of the hot picks for a competition win, with a huge 2,000+ votes that saw the end to Game of Thrones' amazing run as it bowed out with 1,600 votes. Fringe has managed to squeeze through a slower and quieter poll against Veronica Mars, but needs to perform much better in the Quarter Finals if it wants to beat the Vampire Slayer...

Today sees David Boreanaz's old and new shows going head to head for a Quarter Final place as Bones challenges Angel and we also have another Joss Whedon show in Firefly challenging How I Met Your Mother.

The rules for, for anyone new to the competition are very simple. There will be new sets of shows against each other every day in a new set of polls... simply vote for your favourite and the show with the most votes will win that days poll and head into the next round.

Don't forget to spread the word, and tweet out the competition to friends as well as facebook liking the post...
Also if you are taking part in the prediction competition, don't forget to follow your scores HERE Long time leader Sergey Sevostianov has been caught up, his lead down from nine points to five. Second placed Yvonne Damon now has 71 points to Sergey's 76... Can he be caught?

All that's left to say, is good luck to every show...
... and let the battles begin!

  1. I voted Bones & How I Met Your Mother...

Not really a Whedon fan, and think it'd be great for a sitcom to reach the final eight :)

    ReplyDelete
  2. Angel and HIMYM today - I will be in the minority but what else is new.  I am a fan of Bones but over the years the will they won't they aspect got too much to take until I was hoping they'd both get with different people.  I choose Angel because of this.

I like HIMYM but I never expected to be voting for it this far into the contest.  Way to go Neal Patrick Harris, or whatever reason other people choose it.  However, if it were up against anyone else still in this contest, I would not vote for it - well, maybe TVD.  I just don't understand Firefly love.

  3. Angel and HIMYM for me.

I've thought Bones was overrated since it first aired and I watched it regularly. I don;t understand how some foreign tribe Bones was studying didn't kill her when she corrected their grammar or made some ridiculous Bone-ish remark.

Love Firefly but it will never be more than an incomplete series to me. Plus Serenity (the movie) is not part of Firefly (the TV series) in my mind. I can only judge the episodes aired on TV.

  4. Bones and Firefly for me.

  5. I like the rankings Adam.  Particularly since 3 of my favorites did better than I thought they would.  Woo hoo, White Collar especially.

  6. Angel and Firefly.

  7. Angel and Firefly for me.

  8. Bones and Firefly- the former because nothing and I mean nothing can make amends for bad storylines and worse firing your lead actress because she got pregnant. Write Charisma's character out for the rest of the season, but you don't fire her, lure her back under false pretenses and then kill off her character once she is obligated to shoot the episode. I voted for Firefly for my best friend, a major fan and because I'm not so crazy about How I Met Your Mother.

    voted bones and HIMYM
bones i've seen a couple of episodes and it wasn't too bad
HIMYM i used to love and even though i have found the more recent seasons to not be as great as the earlier ones, i still love watching the gang, especialy barney and marshal and its a show that always makes me laugh

rankings are awesome, very happy to see criminals minds at the top of round one, i wish it had gone further

  10. I love how it's a Whedon day today!

    Went for Angel and Firefly.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Angel. Because Bones just turned me right off when they just went on and on with the Booth/Bones, will they/won't they crap. I fudgin' hate that.
I don't really watch HIMYM very often but I like what I've seen. I like Firefly but I don't love it. So I voted HIMYM because I like NPH

    ReplyDelete
  12. Angel & Firefly.

Angel because it is still one of my all-time favourites and I'm no fan of procedural-type shows like Bones.

And Firefly because it absolutely captivated me, whereas HIMYM barely held my attention span for five minutes.

    ReplyDelete
  13. So... are you only voting for HIMYM because you don't understand Firefly love (you said you'd vote for anything else over it normally) or because HIMYM is the better show in your opinion?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I picked Bones over Angel. Mostly because I like Booth better than Angel. I liked Angel a lot when he was on Buffy but once the character got spun off into his own series, he became this ridiculously exaggerated caricature. So. much. emo. brooding. The character of Booth on the other hand is much more interesting. And David Boreanaz has more than one facial expression! Who knew? Unitl I watched Bones, I didn't. Also I adore Brennan. She's like my personal hero.

I can't vote for Firefly or HIMYM because I've never watched either one.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I voted for Bones. I liked both shows, but then again I don't just like Bones but absolutely love it. It's definitely the better show to me, with better characters, better dialogues (!), and just the whole atmosphere. Still, I am sorry that I had to vote against Angel (guess I don't have to be too sad, though, because right now Angel's winning. Let's see how this turns out).
And I didn't vote for the second show. I haven't seen either of these shows, ever. I don't even know what Firefly is about. So that poll's not mine to vote in.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I like HIMYM.  It makes me laugh (usually) and I love Neal Patrick Harris in it.  The Suits video was an example of HIMYM at its finest.  However, HIMYM isn't in my top 10 TV shows.  Bones, Angel, Buffy, NCIS, and Fringe would all be higher.  HIMYM is however higher on that list than Firefly.  I honestly think Firefly for me suffers from too high expectations.  I went into the series expecting to be blown away because of all the glowing reviews it got last year.  Instead I was amused sometimes, bored sometimes, and interested sometimes, but mostly I was disappointed.  Summer Glau's character was completely annoying and the first few episodes I wanted to smack Mal.  It got better towards the end (albeit rushed) but the only people I really enjoyed were Kaylee and Wash.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Yeah, I think the hype really does cause a lot of people to go WTF? At the time, without the hype, it was awesome.

I think the hype just came because of the trauma of losing it so early when it was building up so well. Imagine Supernatural had been cancelled partway through Season One. The fans would hype it up as the best show not continued... but others, watching it as an incomplete series, wouldn't understand.

    That's my theory anywho.

    ReplyDelete
  18. havent watched Firefly... But I am a big fan of HIMYM... Sad its losing....

    ReplyDelete
  19. I voted Bones and Firefly. Although I love How I Met Your Mother, Firefly was a great show and I'm still wishing for it to come back.

  20. Bones and Firefly! You can't stop the serenity!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Angel over Bones always and of course Joss Whedon's Firefly

    ReplyDelete
  22. JosephMcLaddle11 July 2011 at 09:56

HIMYM vs Firefly was a terrible choice.   But ultimately... You can't stop the signal!

Didn't vote in the other poll.  I've never seen Angel but I would really like someone's informed opinion on the show in respect to Buffy, as it's now all available on Netflix Instant.

You want to smack River and Mal?

Dahne, you are my favorite SpoilerTV commenters, but you've spoke some fightin' words.

  24. Angel Seasons 1, 2 & 5 remain my favourites of most TV shows (before and since the show aired). Seasons 3 & 4 went to a place I didn't really like. I usually love darker storytelling but it became a lot like a glorified soap opera, and it undid a lot of greatness some of the characters had achieved (on the flipside, it made one of them - Wesley - into a total badass).

Season 5 repaired a lot of the damage that had been done and redeemed a lot of the characters and poor choices in the previous two seasons. There's a lot of good in all seasons of the show but there's also a lot of flaws. I love the show not in spite of the flaws but because of them too. Much like Buffy, it was hit and miss sometimes.

Whereas Buffy would have season-long plots that would generally wrap up by the end, Angel was a lot like a book - each season a chapter - contributing to a larger story. It's not heavily serialised (like LOST or BSG) but it pays to follow the journey, as the pay-off gives a greater reward.

Ultimately, "Angel" ended a completely different show than how it started, though the series message of "you fight and you keep fighting" remained the same.

    Hope that helps!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Aw, thanks.  Bring it on.  Surely even the most fanatical Firefly fans have to admit for over half the series the only thing River did was annoyingly shriek and rock and generally either be a nuisance or wallpaper.  She didn't become an action star until the very end (and the movie which I don't count for a TV contest).  By that time, the series was so weirdly paced and she had bugged me so much that I couldn't stand her.

    ReplyDelete
  26. JosephMcLaddle11 July 2011 at 10:20

Would you recommend it? I'm mainly afraid it because of it's "spin-off"nature....

And just out of curiosity, I know Charisma Carpenter's character went to Angel--how did she fare as a character?  I was always kind of on the fence about her.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'd definitely recommend it. It's well worth your time... though, like I said, it does suffer a dip in quality somewhere in the middle (though, I'm sure others loved those particular storylines).

Cordelia ended up as one of my all-time favourite characters. I wasn't that bothered about her in Buffy but it only took a few episodes in Angel for me to actually look forward to seeing her develop. Without giving too much away, her character suffers from the writing in the middle but (I feel) they completely redeem her in Season 5. The epsiode she reappears in is pure gold.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Bones and HIMYM (the last one was a tough one)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Watch the fifth episode -  Rm w/a Vu.  I liked Cordelia's character best here.  I think she is stronger but less  "mean girl" on Angel.  Up until they assassinate her character for the excruciating Connor plot.  If you liked, Buffy I would give Angel a try.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Cordy definitely kept her snark but she grew a heart. And actually wore it on her sleeve most of the time too.

And that particular plot (Connor) is the one I really don't like and feel the whole show suffered because of it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Agreed on all counts.  I was ready to jump ship with the Connor thing but the reboot was good for all.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I actually really liked her character. I loved them all because of how different they were to the next - a hard thing to do for an ensemble sci-fi show. It was exciting to see how her mystery would unfold and just what exactly she was.

    ReplyDelete
  33. It's sad the show ended at Season 5, as I really feel that's when they found the perfect balance (similar to Buffy in the doom/humour/action/drama balance of the best seasons).

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wait... no love for Zoe or Jayne? Loved the former's terse attitude and Jayne's "manboy" persona.

    ReplyDelete
  35. JosephMcLaddle11 July 2011 at 10:32

For the first time, I have to say, you are dead wrong and I think you need to rewatch the series if you think that.  I spent about twenty hours editing a River Tam compilation for my Avid class last semester.  That would literally be impossible if she did not kick as much ass as she did.

    ReplyDelete
  36. JosephMcLaddle11 July 2011 at 10:39

I think you hit the nail on the head with the word "different."  Firefly had about the best cast ever.

    ReplyDelete
  37. If I may say something about this: Don't let the "spin-off" keep you from watching it. Yes, the mythology and the background as to why Angel left and everything is all about BtVS, but I think the show managed it very well to even explain some of it again for new viewers and also, it managed to get its very own style with stories and supernatural friends and enemies that are different from Buffy's. There are a couple of episodes that scream "spin-off", since they are Buffy-Angel crossovers, but other than that it is really a show on its own with a unique atmosphere and characters, even if some of them were once in Buffy.

And especially Charisma Carpenter's character was - in my opinion - very lucky to sort of transfer to that show, because I'm sure she wouldn't have gotten the attention she deserved in Buffy. I'm not saying I thought she deserved the attention before Angel started, but once it did and Cordelia had a more important part, it really made you understand her better and they could show sides to her that were completely unexpected because they could just never get into her character that much. They just really did a good job with her character in Angel.

David Boreanaz vs. David Boreanaz  that's gonna be hard!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Firefly, of course.

Bones vs. Angel is the most difficult vote so far for me. I think I'm going to have to go with Angel though.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Bones and Firefly... although I was nearly voting for HIMYM... I'm in position 4 in the bracket's ranking! lol never expected that! but I don't think I can stay there, seeing how is these polls going ...so I'm enjoying my moment of glory! XDDDDD

    ReplyDelete
  41. I was never interested in Bones (seen the first season though) and since Angel is one of my favorites, I voted Angel.

I like both Firefly and HIMYM but this was an easy choice and went to Firefly.

    ReplyDelete
  42. yes, I forgot to say something about it! woo hoo White Collar and Castle (although I thought Castle would be in next round >.<) XDD and sad for ER... one of the best shows ever and it's on 38 position... :'(

    ReplyDelete
  43. Bones, for the first one!I enjoy it very much, even though it's not a show that I watch on weekly basis..To be honest though,I've never watched Angel.I'll definitely give it a try at some point!

Haven't seen HIMYM or Firefly,so I'm leaving that one to the experts..

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't know how Bones fans were able to put up with the will they/won't they storyline for so long.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Wesley followed over to Angel too, and his storyline over the course of Angel is one of my favourite character storylines on any Whedon show. He grows so much from how we first met him in Buffy season 3 and has some really great character arcs.

    Angel and Firefly for me..

    ReplyDelete
  47. Wow! Angel vs. Bones. Comparing David Boreana\ then and now, I had to go with Angel. He came into his own in that series in a big way.

    ReplyDelete
  48. bones and firefly because firefly is the Television of Gods.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Is that actually DarkUFO who just commented on Whedonesque? if so, how did you find yourself over there?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Yep, that was me.

I was just looking at our stats and saw a large number of hits coming from
    Whedonesque :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. HIMYM, of course. But LOL, how am I supposed to choose between Bones and Angel?

    ReplyDelete
  52.  The second one is.. undecidable, if that's a real word

    ReplyDelete
  53. Angel against Bones. lol. I voted Angel, however. And Firefly- it was epic.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Angel was great. I enjoyed it about as much as Buffy. I think it was slightly more violent as well.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Angel and Firefly. Everyone stop bitching about how Firefly was so short lived. What it managed to do in less than a season was impeccable, and that's why it will probably win this competition. Haters gonna hate.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Whoo, ranked #10 today, I didn't expect that at all.

I thought my bracket was completely screwed because of some choices I've made : I predicted Lost in semi-finals, I even predicted Dr Who vs Friends
today (instead of Bones/Angel), with Friends going to round 4/Quarter Finals (whereas both
Dr Who and Friends were eliminated in the 1st round).

I'm glad I was wrong to predict Gossip Girl going to round 3, the show got kicked out in the 1st round. I overestimated Gossip Girl and underestimated Game of Thrones, I guess, I didn't think a show who wasn't even on the air 3 months ago would go this far, and since CW shows are quite popular around here, I thought GG would be okay.

Anyway, I'm glad to be in the top 10 right now (but I know I won't be after today... I mean, I had Dr Who vs. Friends instead of Bones vs. Angel, you can't be more wrong than that).

I voted for Angel and HIMYM today : Angel was a great show, especially the latter seasons ; and while Firefly is truly great, even if HIMYM sucks nowadays, the show had 2-3 great seasons so I cannot not vote for it.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Angel and How I Met Your Mother

    ReplyDelete
  58. Angel and Firefly for me. I don't really think Angel should make it this far when compared to other shows that have lost in earlier rounds (such as LOST, Game of Thrones, etc), but I actually watched Angel before Buffy, so it'll always have a special place in the pantheon of television for me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Angel and How I Met Your Mother!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Bones for me. Absolutely love that show! im starting season 6 now. I've only just started Angel yesterday lol though I have been voting for it throughout because I love David Boreanaz. It's good to see that Angel and Buffy still have such strong followings years after the shows ended.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Whedon all the way. I love HIMYM but i love firefly more. Im sure aly hanngian wont mind me picking her old boss lol

I would love to see Firefly win the tournament. Then we shud send the results to fox and tell them to get there finger out and get another film lol

    ReplyDelete
  62. I voted Bones and HIMYM. Bones because I really enjoy it almost every episode and even so I loved Angel in Buffy, the whole Wolfram and Heart part in Angel just wasn`t my thing. Normaly I  watch sitcoms not regulary and  normaly I don`t care if I miss an episode or so , but HIMYM got me really hooked ;) and so I just had to vote for it, but I do I like Firefly too !

    ReplyDelete
  63. Bones all the way!!!!! It wouldn't surprise me though if it lost, it seems that the quality and critically acclaimed shows are losing to unworthy shows....Friends is gone, LOST is gone, it's just not right!!

    ReplyDelete
  64. With all my favorites dropping like flies, here's hoping Firefly...(yeah, I know) can make it farther. Firefly and Bones for me. Wasn't an Angel fans though I loved Buffy (though I think I loved Buffy...not Buffy).

    ReplyDelete
  65. Sorry my friend, but it is you who is dead wrong.  Last year, when River Tam was winning the character competition (because we later found out someone was cheating and voted 1,000's of times for her), I did the math.  Here's how it breaks down:

River Tam was in 14 episodes of Firefly. We could say 15 episodes
since the first episode was 2 hours long. Of those episodes, River had 79
minutes and 52 seconds of screen time and that is counting generously. (And by generously I mean even if her elbow was on the screen.) If you
divide that by the 14 episodes, she averaged 343 seconds per episode of screen
time, rounding up. That's a little less than 6 minutes of screen time per
episode.  (If using 15 episodes, she had 5 minutes and 33 seconds an episode.)  That 6 minutes includes all the time she was asleep, standing against
a wall, eating, being carried, staring at the sky, in the background with all
the other cast members, and rocking back and forth crying. By my calculations,
that is well over half the time she is on screen. So she spent less than 3
minutes an episode talking or doing anything at all.

River Tam was not a character so much as a plot
device. She was used to give other characters things to do and talk about. The
simple fact is that she did not have enough time to do or become anything. It
was not until the movie (119 minutes) came out that she became a character.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Sorry.  I enjoyed Jayne too  and he is my favorite character on Chuck.  I attribute it to the actor.

    ReplyDelete
  67. You make a good point about Bones.  I only watched the the first 3 episodes because "Angel" was in it.  I hated the Bones character so much that I stopped watching it.  Eventually I went back to it (again for Angel) and she grew on me, but I'd think one of her co-workers would have killed long before that.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Saying statistics and personal views doesn't change the impact a character had on someone.

Whether they were on screen for five seconds or five decades, blew up a galaxy or did a dance.

Whether you like it or not (or, understand it, I guess), there is a huge following for Firefly/Serenity. And a lot of that comes down to just a couple of integral characters - one of them is definitely River. Summer Glau would not be nearly as popular as she is now if it weren't for Firefly and the River Tam character... which just goes to show that to a lot of people, that character mattered.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Bones and HIMYM, both of which are currently losing.  Either way, I'm highly amused that both of Boreanaz's shows are being pitted against each other.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I'd argue Angel is more critically acclaimed than Bones.

  71. My comment was in response to Joseph saying that River Tam spent a lot of time kicking butt.  My counter is that she actually was not in Firefly very much and most of the time she was, she was definitely NOT kicking butt.  She spent a lot of time sleeping and rocking.

You and everyone else of course have your opinion about characters.  We all think what we think.  Either way is valid.

  73. No competition between Angel and Bones, for me. Bones jumped the shark years ago, when they blew off Zack's hands and turned him into a murderer in defiance of both logic and characterisation. They've pulled all kinds of nonsense since (fantasy nightclub worlds, Stewie friggin' Griffin, blah de blah de blah), but that season 3 finale was the point at which the Bones I loved effectively ended.

There were a number of plot developments in Angel I didn't like, but Joss Whedon would never have sold out in favour of ratings and and over-the-top melodrama the way Bones' showrunners did.

  74. Another show that bit it in the writer's strike.  Making Zack a part of a cannibalistic serial killer's wacky conspiracy theory plans was by far the worst thing they have ever done.  While it didn't completely kill the series for me, it did lessen my joy for Bones.  That's when it went from one of my favorites to something I watched more out of habit.  I know the actor wanted off the show, but there were far better options.  He was brilliant.  Why couldn't he have gone to work in another state?  Then he could have guest starred more often.

  76. Wow just 20 votes separating Angel and Bones. Sad to see Bones go but i guess it comes in 9th which is pretty good! Now for Angel vs Firefly I wonder what is going to happen!

  77. Wouldn't it be 12th? Below Game of Thrones, Lost and X-Files

  78. I don't believe Bones lost for 20 votes!
