Hey Guys,
The final day of Round 2 has been and the winners are Firefly and How I Met Your Mother which take their place in the final 16 of the competition.
For the start of Round 3 we have two cracking ties for you to dive into, with Chuck challenging The X-Files as well as Charmed taking on Supernatural with all four shows hoping to take their place in the Quarter Finals of the competition.
The rules for, for anyone new to the competition are very simple. There will be new sets of shows against each other every day in a new set of polls... simply vote for your favourite and the show with the most votes will win that days poll and head into the next round.
Don't forget to spread the word, and tweet out the competition to friends as well as facebook liking the post...

ReplyDeleteI love Charmed, it's a great show. I used to watch it with my sister all the time, but Supernatural is the better show to me and the video was beautiful and inspiring. So while I have that lingering connection to Charmed, I'm much more attached and love Supernatural. X-Files too. Before my best friend friend passed away we used to watch it and obsess over David Duchovny all the time. lol She absolutely loved him. X-Files holds a special place in my heart, so X-Files and Supernatural get my vote.

ReplyDeleteI love both Charmed and Supernatural. Even though I think SN is the better show, I voted for Charmed due to sentimentality and the fact that I know SN will win anyway.
ReplyDeleteI was the same. I voted against chuck which i truly love but x files has been an epic show and world wide fan base. Chuck has not reached that scale and unfortunately never will.

X-files easily for the first one, although I did like Chuck (I haven´t watched it in a while). But the second one was hard. I loved Charmed and I love Supernatural. In the end I voted for Charmed because I know SN will have enough votes on its own.

ReplyDeleteHow is the X-Files losing to Chuck? The X-Files was a show unlike any other series. It deserves to go to another round. I know the series ended almost 10 years ago but it has close to 500 votes for a reason. It's an amazing series. If you are reading this message & love the X-Files, make sure to tell your friends to vote for the series. It needs to win! (Though all 4 shows are fantastic. Wonderful round!)

I don't care for either Charmed or Supernatural, so no votes from me there.
Chuck a better show than X-Files? VERY UNLIKELY. The only
ReplyDeletereason Chuck is even giving X-Files competition right now is because Chuck is a
current show with a current active fanbase while X-Files is a 90s show that has
been off the air for a decade and naturally the fanbase isn't as active. (Let's
see how Chuck does compared to new shows 10 years from now. LOL)
But going back to these two shows, I can't see how anyone
could think that in general terms, Chuck is better than X-Files.
Chuck has only been on for 4 seasons. X-Files was on for
twice that and had 2 feature films under its belt. That alone is something that
almost NO OTHER show has done.
Rating wise, I don't follow Chuck very much, but I remember
hearing it struggled in NBC with 4-6 million per episode. X-Files in its
highest season had over 17 million and in it's lowest season had 7 million. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_X-Files)
As far as quality goes, Chuck is listed on this page as
having 2 Emmy wins while the X-Files had 16 Emmy wins (nomination wise, Chuck
has only 2 nominations for Emmy's while the X-files had a whopping 45!!!) Not
to mention it had dozens of *other* awards like SAG's and Golden Globes.
Anyway, you dice it, X-File is a much better series. It
lasted longer, it had higher ratings, it had more awards and not only was a
huge cultural phenomena at the time but it has passed the test of time as
demonstrated in polls like this one where a decade year old show like the
X-Files can still give a relative new show like Chuck a run for its money.
Let's face it?
ReplyDeleteAt the most, it could be YOUR way of seeing it, but for sure it isn't an universal truth that we're trying to avoid.
This site is for spoilers so most of the people who visit here are fans of the new shows like Supernatural, Bones, Fringe, Chuck, ect. I'd say it's very unlikely that the traffic this site brings in would be composed of fans of older shows who clearly wouldn't have a reason to seek out spoilers. So, I think that generally speaking, the newer shows have an unfair advantage in terms of what type of "fan" this site naturally brings in. Then of course the other advantages these new shows have is that they are new! LOL So they have, I'm sure, very active fanbases who are constantly voting on these types of polls. I've done the same with other newer shows I watch like Smallville and Bones...Every year I get in the mindset of voting and typically vote 20-30 times throughout the year on dozens upon dozens of polls! I rarely get to vote for X-Files though since it's such an old show, but I'm glad I did here, it's one of my all time favorite shows! :)

However, you can try to get to some kind of an objective answer by looking at comparable and concrete data such as ratings, awards, longevity of the series, ect, which is exactly what I did, and in those concrete terms, X-Files is clearly superior to Chuck.

New shows do have an advantage. There's no denying that. However, many of these shows have paid homage to the X-Files in some way or another. Plus, many people on SpoilerTV are particularly fond of genre shows and remember when the X-Files was airing. Even last year when this competition began, The X-Files had a great run. If a decades old show is going to be shown love in a competition, this is it's best shot. The X-Files created a legacy that is hard to ignore. I'm quite frankly surprised Chuck is beating it.

ReplyDeleteI haven't seen all of either, but I have seen a handful of both X-Files and Chuck... Very different shows, but X-Files gets my vote mainly for its legacy. A lot of shows I love now might not have been given a chance if X-Files had never existed.
ReplyDeleteDidn't even bother voting or checking the results of Charmed vs. Supernatural. Not even real witches could defeat the behemoth of Supernatural online fandom. I'm honestly more interested in who will win second place overall.

ReplyDeleteI'm not a Supernatural hater (I actually really love the show), but at some point these competitions become "Best Fanbase" and not "Best Show," and I'm okay with that. I respect the Supernatural fans for being so present and ardent, though I do criticize a fraction of them for being petty at times (fans who propagate the "Samgirls" vs. "Deangirls" catfights, I'm looking at you).
But yeah, these competitions fascinate me. Seeing a show like Breaking Bad lose to The Vampire Diaries is a really interesting social commentary of fansites.

If you honestly can't fathom why someone would pick Chuck over the X-Files, I'll try to help you. It's subjective, according to taste. Just because you (and I, actually) think X-Files is a far superior show, it doesn't make it so.
All the Emmys, seasons, ratings in the world couldn't make me think Smallville or Charmed or Two And A Half Men are superior shows to things like Fringe, Firefly, Pushing Daisies, etc.
Nobody needs to look at any data.
