Spoiler TV: The Best TV Show Competition 2011 - R2 - Day 20 - The Wire vs. LOST & White Collar vs. The Vampire Diaries

2 Jul 2011

Hey Guys,

Yesterday saw decent enough performances from NCIS and 24 that gave them wins over both House and Pushing Daisies, however the number of votes for both wasn't particularly impressive enough to think they stand a chance further on down the line. It will be interesting to see whether they can rein in some more support for round three onwards.

Today we have a copy of one of last years semi-finals with The Wire challenging LOST early on in the competition. Also today we have White Collar taking on The Vampire Diaries in what will be a tough day for the former as TVD has shown last year as well as in round one that it is a force to be reckoned with.

The rules for, for anyone new to the competition are very simple. There will be new sets of shows against each other every day in a new set of polls... simply vote for your favourite and the show with the most votes will win that days poll and head into the next round.

Don't forget to spread the word, and tweet out the competition to friends as well as facebook liking the post...
Also if you are taking part in the prediction competition, don't forget to follow your scores HERE Sergey Sevostianov is still holding onto the lead on 40 points, and now with only Dahne for company one point behind on 39...

All that's left to say, is good luck to every show...
... and let the battles begin!

  1. Only voted in the first poll and went for LOST.

  2. LOST (even though it pained me since I know this show is by no means perfect and The Wire probably is better in terms of quality but LOST holds a special place in my heart)
TVD (never was able to get into White Collar)

    ReplyDelete
  3. Lost and The Vampire Diaries!

    LOST and White Collar...

    ReplyDelete
  5. The Wire and White Collar for me!!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  6. Ah, my poor little White Collar.  You are so going to get crushed today and it is a shame.  Hold on to that 3 vote lead for as long as you can (probably lost by the time I post this).

    I also voted the Wire.

    ReplyDelete
  7. I feel bad for White Collar too... :'(

    ReplyDelete
  8. I would have prefered if Lost and The Wire had not been up against each other.

I voted for The Vampire Diaries in the 2nd poll and I am glad I did so because it is a good show, but if it had been Lost or The Wire instead if White Collar you bet I would have voted for one of those two.

The first poll is one of those polls where I wish we could pick both options. But we can't, so I voted for The Vampire Diaries and The Wire (best show ever, even if I absolutely love Lost I had to vote for The Wire... Lost is gonna win anyway).

  9. I know it has NO chance of winning but, GO The Wire!

    ReplyDelete
  10. Wow That first poll just looks BRUTAL!
Two of the best shows in the last 10 years... and arguably EVER. In 'The End' I went with LOST.

The second poll was tough , but nowhere near as hard .TVD is just a better series than White Collar even though I enjoy White Collar a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Alright, I suppose it won't get any harder than deciding which show to choose on the first poll.

The Wire is one of the best shows ever, there is no question about it. It was superb in a every single aspect, great acting, great writing and very realistic. Plus, it's quite simply THE "anti-procedural cop show". Great show.

Lost on the other hand was able to simply mesmerize me. I never was that invested in a show like I was invested in Lost. I read theories and articles about it and even joined a German Lost forum to discuss episodes, ideas and theories. I doubt that I will be that enthralled about a TV show ever again.

Usually my vote would go to lost, but since The Wire doesn't stand a chance anyway, it gets my vote today.

Didn't vote in the second poll, but we all know who's going to win that one.

    ReplyDelete
  12. That first poll is just nasty! Arguably the 2 best series in this poll and against each other in the second round. Wow!

    ReplyDelete
  13. The Wire had 5 perfect seasons, LOST on the other hand...

    ReplyDelete
  14. The first poll cracks me up a bit. Arguably two of the best shows ever pitted against one another and it is more than likely that neither one will make it to the final round.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I hadn't thought of that, but it's true! Ugh... sigh...

    ReplyDelete
  16. Not happy with the second pairing, LOVE both! =P

    ReplyDelete
  17. I only voted in the second poll, because I haven`t seen both shows from the first. So this round my vote goes to Vampire Diaries!

    ReplyDelete
  18. LOST!!!! One of the best shows ever made!

Went with TVD in the second pole. Not a huge fan, but it´s ok. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  19. LOST and White Collar! Booo to 'tween melodrama.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don,t listen to any of those 4 shows but voted for White Collar cause it's against the Twi-like vampires

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would have to say that I think that LOST is possibly the best show of all time. It needs to win!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Lost and Vampire Diaries... I like White Collar too, it was a tough call.. My vote made it 83 votes each.. It's gonna be interesting to see who wins..

    ReplyDelete
  23. I don't know why I put The Wire as a winner in my bracket... vs. LOST? My mind was so optimistic that day XD

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lost and White Collar

I think if more people saw The Wire it would be a closer race with Lost.  Great show.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I did the same thing with Arrested Development vs 24.

One of those brain freeze moments where all logic is lost and your fav is just "obviously" the best show.....Been there, done that.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Isn't that the problem with many critically acclaimed shows? Oz, Breaking Bad or Rome immediately come to my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  27. yep... XD well, I have to say I haven't seen The Wire yet, but I want to! and I saw 4 first episodes of Lost, and I didn't dislike them, but, don't know why, I didn't keep watching it... :/

    ReplyDelete
  28. The press called it th UK Mad Men too, but the showrunners and actors have been stressing it is more historical drama set in the Suez Canal Crisis than a stylized "era" drama.

That said, I thought British Mad Men too... XD

    ReplyDelete
  29. Shows that are critical darlings are often ratings-challenged, which is a shame.  The ugly  secret in TV is that we see so many formulaic shows on the air because they're not challenging and the masses like them.

On  a similar note, I miss Rubicon.  :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Lost and Vampire Diaries for me. :) I haven't even watched the other ones...

    ReplyDelete
  31. White Collar vs TVD - no matter how hot Paul Wesley is, really? Team Burke vs kidos playing with blood?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Chose Lost over The Wire but not without much agonizing. The Wire is just so, so good. Realistic and eye-opening as to inner-city problems, with perfect acting and writing.

Lost challenged me to think hard and to get back into reading the classics, to consider how mythology connects to reality: in other words, required audience participation like no other show ever has done. An incredible achievement. I was drawn into it and deeply moved. Loved all the seasons, BTW.

I'm going to have to check out this White Collar everyone's talking about.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I voted for The Wire and White Collar (even though I seem to watch TVD more than White Collar... Who'd have thought that?)
(I figured LOST would get enough love, and not enough people love The Wire!)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Right, but I think an even bigger problem is that series shows, although they are often far superior, are a challenge to busy people who simply are not able to catch up. I'm quickly catching up on Justified so I will, finally, be able to watch it as it airs in S3, but I haven't been able to watch Breaking Bad because I've missed so much. On the other hand, for something like SVU, for example, no catching up required.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm glad you voted White Collar because it is one of my favorite shows, but in VD's defense, it is hardly like Twilight.  I actually think Twilight is now hurting the show more than it helps because people automatically put the two together and Twilight is for me unquestionably a pit of suckage.

    ReplyDelete
  36. ^^; I guess the CW promos doesn't help, cause every single promo I saw they're only showing clips of love-triangle and write things on their promo like ',it's sexy, it's a vampire/human sexy meeting, it's love tension..etc'', the CW always promoted it to attract Twilights fans......all I know of the shows is the comparaison coming from the CW itself

    ReplyDelete
  37. That's always been a problem with serialized shows... people say they don't have time to commit.

The good news is with  DVRs, streaming sites, and downloads, it's becoming easier and easier to keep up with any series.... even the shows outside a viewer's country or on channels they don't get.

I have hopes for more serialized masterpieces now with so many cable networks doing original programming.

    ReplyDelete
  38. My case for White Collar:

Realistically I think Vampire Diaries is going to win, but I can't watch that happen silently.  I've seen the first season of VD and am currently watching the 3rd season of White Collar and for me White Collar wins hands down for several reasons.  For one, White Collar is simply fun.  It's a summer show that allows you to get caught up in the white collar crime world.  Much of the show has a throw-back feel to classic detective series that were on when I was a kid.  It is often compared to Columbo.  It has a breezy humor that can come out of no where to deadpan you into guffaws, but it is quick with the one-line zinger too.

It is not designed to challenge worldviews and tackle tough social problems, but it isn't brainless either.  One of my favorite things is when they have to execute a complicated sting or problem in order to ensure justice.  It has the appeal of Clue and the intricacies of an early Ocean's 11 or similar con movie. It is also by FAR the hardest show for me to recap because of all of its references.  In a typical episode, I end up researching different schools of philosophy, fashion gurus, the scientific process of creating fake gems, and NYC architecture.  Heck, they even through in the Kardashians in a particularly funny quip this season.  I've learned a lot through recapping White Collar, not the least being an impressive amount of quotes from everyone to ancient Chinese wise men to Jimmy Buffett.  Only Community comes close to out-referencing White Collar.

For me though, White Collar is one of my favorites because of the secondary characters.  Don't get me wrong, Peter and Neal are the heart of the show.  Their relationship, which in season 2 was comparable to an exasperated older brother trying to keep his mischievous younger brother out of trouble, draws you in and makes you care about each of them.  However, this series wouldn't fly for me without Mozzie.  Played to perfection by Willie Garson, of Sex and the City fame, Mozzie would drive you insane if you lived with him but he steals the scene every time.  He's a paranoid, conspiracy-theory loving con man who often  plays the mentor to Neal.  His photographic memory and love of all things gadgety (hello banana knife) make me laugh every time.  It could have been a one-note character just brought in for comic relief (and yes he does still serve that purpose a lot), but by showing his vulnerabilities and especially through his true friend relationship with Neal, Mozzie is rapidly climbing up my favorite characters ever list.  He is joined by Peter's wife Elizabeth, who combined make the most amazing couple on TV.  I wish all characters were portrayed like the Burkes.  They are both smart, personable, genuine, and caring and they always, always have each other's back.

Even if White Collar loses this round, I hope you give it a try.  It's the perfect summer show and it keeps getting better and better.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ha!  The CW does truly suck.  Here's hoping the new head has his head together and can turn the CW into something beyond a teen-girl focus.  They definitely have promoted everything solely to that population whether the show deserved it or not.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I didn't vote in the first once since LOST lost my interest and I've never seen the Wire, so I can't say anything about this show.

In the second poll I definitly voted for White Collar because after my favorite show it's the second best show I've seen in a long time. It has action, it is hilarious funny and has great characters (primary and secondary as well) and great actors to play them. It's a shame that it's probably going down against TVD.

    ReplyDelete
  41. LOST of course, but it's a tough one since The Wire is some high art.

I'm surprised at how well White Collar is doing against TVD :O!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm surprised too!
I like both so I'm happy... well, that and my bracket broke days ago. XD

    ReplyDelete
  43. "A pit of suckage" ROFL!!!
    Yes. Yes it is.
I watched S1 and part of S2 of VD, but I got really tired of the romantic triangle stuff.
NOTHING turns me off a show faster than that.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks, Dahne. That was a wonderful review and I think you sold me. Big question: would I be able to just jump in and start watching, or do I need to watch previous episodes?

    ReplyDelete
  45. Lost and Vampire Diaries = No contest

    ReplyDelete
  46. I never really watched Lost or The Wire so I can't really comment.

I like White Collar because it has such engaging characters. I especially like Elizabeth - she is so untypical of the standard secondary character: whiny, disaffected wife who sabotages everything. Or becomes part of a romantic triangle driving the male characters apart.

I like it for lots of other reasons too, but I think Dahne has already put my case better than I could.

    ReplyDelete
  47. ^^; Sadly for all the fans who like the show and not Twilight, it will be hard to convince most of the people that it's not like Twilight since it was clearly created to surf on that '''Sexy'''' vampires/Twilight/love triangle wave

    ReplyDelete
  48. Awesome!  I think you could jump right in without too much problem, but it might be a little easier transition if you watch the first and second episode from this season.  They are on Hulu:  http://www.hulu.com/search?query=White+Collar&st=0&fs=

The season 3 premiere is On Guard and the second episode is Where There's a Will.  The second one is a great example of intricate scheming via Ocean's 11.  The third episode has less to do with the overall story and more a character study of Mozzie, so you wouldn't need to see it to know the plot.  Still it is my favorite episode so far.

Basically if you know the following (SOME SPOILERS FOLLOW), you'll get the gist.  Neal is a con artist that Peter spent years tracking.  He was finally caught and about to finish his sentence for forgery when he breaks out of prison to find his girlfriend Kate.  Peter re-catches him, mostly because he doesn't move when he realizes Kate is gone.  They make an agreement a la Catch Me if You Can, and suddenly Neal is consulting for the FBI White Collar Crimes division instead of in jail.

In the first season, Neal attempts to track down Kate.  In the second, he is after the treasure the music box reveals.  Now in the third season, there is a rift between Neal and Peter because of that treasure.

I hope you get a chance to watch it and tell me what you thought.  It's  fun way to pass the summer.

  49. The only show I actually watch out of these is TVD, and still I ended up NOT voting for it xD I just don't think TVD is THAT great, so I voted White Collar, because I've heard alot of positive things about it.
As for Lost vs. The Wire, I don't watch any of them, but I voted Lost because I used to watch it for a little while a long time ago, and I did really like it. Sadly, I missed too many episodes, so I kinda lost track of what was going on...

    ReplyDelete
  50. lostrocks4ever3 July 2011 at 01:45

very easy for me today. 2 of my all time favourite shows are LOST and vampire diaries and i've never watched an episode of either of the other 2
hopefully they both win but then that'll leave me in the difficult position of having to choose one of the in the next round!

    ReplyDelete
  51. lostrocks4ever3 July 2011 at 01:49

you have deffinately convinced me to give it a shot
they used to play it on tv here in australia, i don't know if they still do, but i remember watching the first half of the pilot and thinking it looked good
it shall be added to the long list of shows everyone here keeps suggesting

    ReplyDelete
  52. the Wire was great but Lost was.. it changed how we watch a show.  Lost gets my vote

and White Collar.. nothing special about it.. its just not jumping on the vampire wagon.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Never watched the wire. I had a love/hate relationship with lost, and I'm still bitter, but I can't bring myself to vote against it. Voted white collar in the second poll. I've only watched a few episodes, but I'm impressed. Not so much with VD.

    ReplyDelete
  54. fabulous!  I guess this is a White Collar win no matter what the results say.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Wow, that's an awesome writeup for White Collar. I might use this to convince some friends to watch if you don't mind?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Thanks.  The more people we can get watching White Collar the better.  Maybe we can get a solid group of people here to discuss the episodes too.  It is so much more fun when more people are commenting.

    ReplyDelete
  57. LOST is my favorite show, and I've tried and failed twice now to get through the pilot of The Wire (realistic fiction has to do quite a bit to not bore me, and the first half of The Wire just does its best to bore me to tears), so I had to vote for the former. I keep telling myself that one of these days I'm going to actually make myself sit through The Wire to see what all the fuss is about (especially since I've been told that it doesn't get really good until episode 5 or so), but I just haven't managed to bring myself to do it yet beyond that first episode.

    ReplyDelete
  58. LOST and The Vampire Diaries

    ReplyDelete
  59. Voted Vampire Diaries, which is really close right now! i was vote 299 for VD v.s 291 for White Collar. Though it doesnt need my vote, i voted Lost because of my love for this site which wouldnt be here without Lost.

    ReplyDelete
  60. It's funny cause when "The End" came, I was... you could call it "unpleasant" lol

    ReplyDelete
  61. Great way to put your thoughts out there. I guess I'll post mine on the matter?
I enjoy the show White Collar, and the acting is respectable with some great comedic moments and the twists here and there keep it a great show, while it also sports the mandatory USA-brand of sunshine and pretty faces as well, so it's a feel-good show, I get it, and respect it, and occasionally enjoy it. However, I've tried for years now to keep up with it week to week and I just can't care about it on a level to watch every week, and I found it eventually clogging my DVR and watched as much as I could but I hate to say this Dahne, but it just isn't... appointment television for me... Now, where White Collar is classy and stylish, TVD is soapy and teenage-lusty and annoying...but the overall storylines that go on in WC just don't soak me in nearly enough. There've been episodes of WC that are really awesome and I'm like "Whoa!" but then it feels like procedural filler for 3-4 more episodes... Meanwhile, on TVD it feels like (more in season 2 than season 1) every episode is a season finale... I truly cannot figure out how this show keeps its pace up so fast, with so much stuff that would on another show take 5 episodes end in 2 episodes and be already forgotten. That may sound A.D.D. of me, but they handle things rather well...especially the twists... I can't blame you for your opinion because obviously WC is a really good show, it just doesn't have me by the throat like quick-paced serialized shows like TVD, or Damages, etc. have me. I won't say TVD is perfect...there's so much wrong with the constant teenage bullsh*t, but I ignore it for the good stuff... I would have to recommend you carry over into season 2... they found a way to make Caroline the best main cast member, and they turned the annoying as hell brother into bearable, as well as that idiot Tyler...it seems the characters become better, the story BLOWS UP and it's just a thrill ride... Just try to ignore the angst Stefan vampire whiny crap... and the most awfully obvious product placement in the entire industry of television. (It's worse than Stride Gum on Smallville. O.O )

    ReplyDelete
  62. I love how White Collar & The Vampire Diaries are neck and neck.
    Makes me wonder if
    a) We have a rather quiet but abundant source of WC fans on our hands...
    b) THAT many people are seriously pissed that Vampire Diaries is still in the competition.

    ReplyDelete
  63. White Collar and Vampire Diaries are only one vote apart!  I can't believe they're that close.

    ReplyDelete
  64. oh my dear god
of course you never watched the wire, otherwise you wouldnt say things like there are engaging characters in WC...

    ReplyDelete
  65. And now they are tied.  Here's hoping that White Collar is winning or it's still very close when I wake up.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Or that it is a major US holiday and voting is down all around this weekend so things are a lot more interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  67. JosephMcLaddle3 July 2011 at 08:14

Interesting how close WC and TVD is.  I wonder how that actually reflects fanbases.  I for one only vote in polls when I've seen both shows, as opposed to blind fan-love, or worse, voting against something in some kind of perverted fan-love.

    ReplyDelete
  68. lostrocks4ever3 July 2011 at 08:29

omg, white collar is winning, i never saw this coming!!

    ReplyDelete
  69. The second poll is so close. I hope The Vampire Diaries wins :)

    ...?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Even though I've only seen a few episodes, I voted LOST because I quite liked the characters.
And for the second poll, I - of course - voted TVD.

    ReplyDelete
  72. My two favorite shows against each other... but I have to go with LOST Because of sentimental reasons.
In the other poll voted White Collar.

    ReplyDelete
  73. NeverStopBeingLost3 July 2011 at 11:15

LOST lingers in my life constantly, entering many of my thoughts and conversations. Experiencing it with family and friends enhanced those relationships greatly. I can't imagine my life without it.

The Wire is a great show, but LOST is a big part of my life and will get my vote no matter who it's against.

    ReplyDelete
  74. NeverStopBeingLost3 July 2011 at 11:22

True. Nowadays people can get entertainment exactly when they want it.

    ReplyDelete
  75. For a minute I was like "What product placement?" and then I remembered their need to zoom in on the Samsung phones every time there was a call or message. xD

    ReplyDelete
  76. now it's winning for one vote! I never thought this could happen! lol but, everything can happen, this remember me of the Castle vs. Chuck poll!!! :O

    ReplyDelete
  77. Lost and White Collar. Now, if I had to pick between the two ...

    ReplyDelete
  78. Second Poll even again.
It just keep sswitching back and forth to who's winning.

    ReplyDelete
  79. As an homage to LOST and its awesomeness, I'm eating a Macadamia nut, choco chip cookie.
It's almost as awesome as LOST was... mmmmmm.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Yay TVD is winning right now.
I'll probably wake up in the morning and it will have lost though..

    ReplyDelete
  81. And the at&t myfi?
and the computers using Windows 7 and BING lol

    ReplyDelete
  82. Yes! Macadamia nuts are from Hawaii. So you're doing a good thing :)

    ReplyDelete
  83. I think Dahne was talking about Twilight.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I would believe that if these polls weren't moving faster than the last round's...

    ReplyDelete

  88. i cant believe i missed this vote. Shame about white collar. i dont watch vampire but i would like to have seen white collar go through

    ReplyDelete
  89. My bracket it is happy but my heart is not.  Good fight White Collar.  You kept it so close.

    ReplyDelete
  90. My bracket is half happy too...I got the other poll wrong xD but as I have no chances of winning the bracket I wish White Collar would've done it... :(

    ReplyDelete
  91. Happy that Vampire Diaries edged out White Collar... sad that White Collar got edged out by Vampires Diaries... both are shows I love, equally...

    ReplyDelete
  92. So was I in the  first part of my comment.

    ReplyDelete
  93. You obviosly didnt watch the wire season 2, it was awful,

  94. LOST(1) VS THE WIRE(3), 2 of my top 5 tv series EVER with X-files, The shield and Fringe rounding off.

  95. LOST is the greatest show ever and the wire is almost as great, but not quite.

  96. Lost on the other hand had 6 perfect seasons,  as someone else said the wire is great but by no means perfect.

  98. You have a point but when a show is "critically aclaimed" people jump in the bandwagon,  i know many people who havent seen the wire yet claim its the best tv series ever, which imo is reiculous, its very "Sheep-like"
