THE SHOW | The CW’s Ringer (Tuesdays at 9/8c, premiering September 13)
THE COMPETITION | NCIS: LA (CBS), Dancing with the Stars results show (ABC), The Biggest Loser (NBC) and the Fox comedies Raising Hope/New Girl.
THE CAST | Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four), Kristoffer Polaha (Life Unexpected), Nestor Carbonell (Lost) and Tara Summers (Boston Legal)
THE SET-UP | Gellar stars as Bridget, a six months sober ex-stripper who is in the FBI’s protective custody until she can testify against Bodaway Macawi, a Native American crime boss with one of TV’s best names ever. Instead, fidgety Bridget escapes to NYC to visit her estranged twin, Siobhan. When sis goes missing, Bridget seizes the chance to co-opt her kin’s life as a means to evade her adversaries — unaware that Siobhan has her own foes. Carbonell plays Bridget’s FBI handler, while Gruffudd, Polaha and Summers are Siobhan’s husband, lover and BFF, respectively.
THE GOOD | Full disclosure: I’m a sucker for doppelganger tales — dating back to Star Trek (“The Enemy Within,” “Mirror, Mirror”) and continuing right on up through Fringe — so Ringer was playing to a receptive audience. But beyond that, the show has legitimate merit, starting with the fact that it is quite probably the most adult piece of programming in The CW’s history. I mean, save for Siobhan’s rebellious stepbrat, there’s not a ‘tween, teen or twentysomething to be seen. The set-up is sound, with some loose ends addressed (Siobhan kept her twin a secret, so no one in her life has reason to suspect a switcheroo is afoot) and nice details sprinkled in (Bridget’s sis apparently had a few pounds on her). Tackling multiple roles, Gellar does a fine job as in-too-deep Bridget, icy Siobhan, and Bridget-as-Siobhan, and the supporting cast presents no weak link. And while the trailers seem to give away the biggest twist (in the form of a piece of dialogue that’s conspicuously missing from the actual pilot), I for one was caught off guard by one jawdropper that throws Bridget’s plan a curve ball.
THE… COULD-BE-BETTER | Nothing jumps out at me as being terribly problematic, though Carbonell’s character — if worthy of his G-man badge — would be wise to someday soon put two and two together, with regards to his AWOL witness and the identical twin sister he just met. Also, Bridget’s emotional touchstone/possible beau/lone confidante — AA sponsor Malcolm (The Good Wife‘s Mike Colter) — is all the way back home. Hopefully he’ll get pulled closer to the action, even if Siobhan’s dance card is already very full.
THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE | One could look at Ringer‘s biggest competition — NCIS: LA and DWTS — and utter, “Yikes.” But the fact is that even when you add in (the waning) Biggest Loser and Fox’s comedies, this is aimed squarely at a very different audience. Let’s hope that those who appreciate tightly wound, borderline-psychological drama find it and stick with it.

As an NCIS fan who doesn't enjoy NCIS: LA, I'll definitely be watching Ringer instead.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for this show to start! Plus, it means SMG on my screen again. I like that plan.
ReplyDeleteYay, another NCIS fan who doesn't like NCIS:LA. I didn't even make it through the pilot!
ReplyDeleteThe guys on the show are hot, but what I watch NCIS for is the camaraderie the crew has, and that didn't translate to LA. Besides, SMG is AWESOME! (Now, if only James Marsters would guest on The Ringer, I'd be a VERY happy girl.)
ReplyDeleteI for one cannot wait for this show. I especially love that it appears the CW is leaning away from teen dramas and into more adult fare. That can only help the CW's failing ratings as a whole.
ReplyDeleteCan James guest star on Bones first then come over to The Ringer? Because I'd be happy with that.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of Bones, per se, but I am totally okay with this. :)
ReplyDeleteYes! I'm glad about that.
ReplyDeleteI will definitely be watching this show now that Smallville is over. Buffy fans have grown up too so I guess they want that group to watch. I just started Buffy but hopefully can watch over the next few months before i start on Ringer.
ReplyDeleteTVLine is like reading a mind of a 14year old girl. Im gonna see what more serious sites like AVClub and Hitfix has to say. At least they can spot a quality show more than TVLine ever has.
ReplyDeleteI'll certainly be there waiting in anticipation.
ReplyDeleteExactly, 90% of their content the past few days has been "OMG! Glee!" so I'll wait on a serious opinion.
ReplyDeleteYou too? I just started Buffy a few weeks ago and I'm almost through S5. It goes fast.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if I like the premise, but I love the stars, so I'll definitely check it out.
ReplyDeleteAt least someone is in their right mind :)
ReplyDeleteYeah, TVLine is only good for their scoops. Their articles are crap because they try way too hard to pander to fans of shows with big online followings.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think of it now that you are in the 5th season?
ReplyDeleteI'm waiting for someone to comment on Tara Summers. I'm about to finish Boston Legal's final season and I have a huge celebrity crush on her.
ReplyDeleteThat aside, agreed with the comments about waiting for AVClub and Hitfix. I think Televisionary already did some basic reviewing though and I generally trust him. He seemed to have enjoyed it.
A psychological drama with a great cast AND they're adults. Sold.
ReplyDeleteStill great! I like Dawn. Very imaginative.
ReplyDeleteWhile I do agree that this last days it has been all about Glee, this fall tv impressions are from Matt Mitovich who works now with Tv Line but used to work in Tv Guide, he is a trustworthy, reliable, professional journalist.
ReplyDeleteThat being said most of the reviews have been positive so it is not only his opinion.
On a different note why do you have to rely on the judgement of others? Why don't do you just wait for it and watch it and form your on opinion? I just don't like when people need the opinions of others to base their actions.... no offense intended
I've read more than one of Matt's "Fall Impression" articles and the
ReplyDeletemajority of them are fluff. There's nothing in this review that couldn't be
gleamed from watching the original trailer. There's not a single
critical point. Are you telling me they managed to nail a
pitch-perfect Pilot episode? Not a single thing that could be better?
Really?
I don't have an opinion on the show at all at the moment to be honest. I simply meant I'm going to wait on a more serious opinion and if I like what I hear I'll check it out. Hell, I'll probably check it out anyway for SMG.
