POLL : What is your favourite season of Doctor Who ?

6 Jul 2011

Hi ! After a small detour on the comedy side with the Parks and Recreation poll, we come back to dramas with a show that I think will get a lot of people voting and debating (not me sadly, I'm not up to date with this show).

Indeed, today's poll is focused on the big british sci-fi show/geek culture phenomenon Doctor Who. We're talking about the 2005 relauch of the show with Christopher Eccleston as the 9th Doctor (season 1), David Tennant as the 10th Doctor (seasons 2, 3, 4 and 2009 specials) and Matt Smith (seasons 5 and 6) as the 11th Doctor.

Let's vote in the poll below ! By the way, here's a feedback on the first four polls :

1 - So far, 2 out of 3 voters (66%) think the third season of Breaking Bad is the best of the show. Let's hope season 4, premiering in 11 days on AMC, will prove us wrong.
2 - The True Blood poll has been more undecided : 42% of the voters think season 2 is the best of the show while seasons 1 and 3 have an equal amont of voters (one vote separe the two of them), with 29% each.
3 - Another configuration emerged from the Burn Notice poll : seasons 2 and 3 gained the biggest amount of votes (35% and 30% respectively) while season 1 (20%) and season 4 (15%) were left behind.
4 - The Parks and Recreation poll received only 83 votes (keep voting !) but so far, season 3 is far ahead of the previous 2 seasons : 64% of the voters chose the latest season while 31% chose season 2 and only 5% (4 voters) think the first season is the best of the show.

Which season of Doctor Who will be the most acclaimed on SpoilerTV ? Vote in the poll below and tell us everything !

Of course, you can still participate to the first four polls :

- What is your favourite season of Breaking Bad ?
- What is your favourite season of True Blood ?
- What is your favourite season of Burn Notice ?
- What is your favourite season of Parks and Recreation ?

  1. For me, Season One was the best.
Eccleston added the gravitas needed to ground the campy and at times just silly Doctor Who stories.

  2. That's difficult.

On the face, I prefer Moffat's Who to Davies. His is far more mythologically driven, faster paced, visually interesting with longer term stories. But his filler has never been great.

Dave Tennant was my favorite Doctor, though, and because the filler was stronger than Season 5 or 6 so far, I'm going to go with Season 4.

  3. Let's see...Season 1 had Eccleston who I felt should have been the Doctor for at least two seasons and great episodes like "Bad Wolf" and "The Parting of the Ways". The camp factor in this season was off the charts and I know not everyone loved that.

Season 2 introduced us to the amazing DT as the Doctor. The highlight episodes of that season being "The Girl in the Fireplace" and "Doomsday". However, it also had Love and Monsters/Fear Her which are two of my least favorite episodes.

Season 3..Oh, S3. You have one of my favorite episodes ever(Blink). Sadly, you made me suffer through Martha Jones. Unforgivable.

Season 4 brought back Catherine Tate as Donna. She is my favorite companion to date and had one of the best(?) endings of any of the characters. This season also had some very strong episodes and introduced a lot of plot points that would come back later. I think this season may have had the most episodes that I would rewatch anytime.

Season 5 gave us a new Doctor, a 'new' TARDIS, a new Sonic Screwdriver, and much more. Indeed, S5 was the season of change. Maybe too much. Higher production values and writing style greatly reduced the level of camp which many viewers enjoyed. It is also one of the only seasons to leave big questions unanswered at the end. That's not to say this season didn't have its high points("Cold Blood" and "Vincent and the Doctor") and stories that tied together very nicely in the end despite leaving some things unresolved.

Season 6 has been stellar...so far. With episodes like "Day of the Moon", "The Doctor's Wife", "The Almost People", and  "A Good Man Goes to War" it may be the best season yet. Having said that I don't think I can vote for it. Moffat is going to have to be very clever to tie this season up while answering questions left unanswered from S5.

In the end my vote goes to S4. It was a nearly flawless season and had my favorite Doctor traveling with my favorite companion.

  4. Aw hell.  This is an extremely difficult question with no easy answer for me.  Season five was easily the most consistent season and it's the only season without any really horrible episodes.  That being said, most of my favorite episodes are from other seasons.

Can't we have a poll for worst?  That one's much easier.  It's season 3.

Even though I voted season Five, the vampires episode? You cant say it didn't have horrible episodes... lol. Season five, while it kept the mythology in almost every episode, it had its weak episodes.

  6. The Vampires of Venice was more tolerable than most bad Doctor Who episodes because of Rory and his reaction to the whole ordeal.  Watching all his jealousy, indignation, and freak-outs made it passable.

  7. The Doctor and Donna has been the most interesting for me.

  8. I only just started watching this season so I guess my vote has to go to season 6. I have seen some of the other seasons' episodes and one of my favorite of those was "The Time of Angels" from i think season 5. But I am trying to watch them all in order, so please bear with me.

    Exactly how
I feel! A few of my buddies and I were having this exact conversation last
night. David Tennant has been my favourite doctor thus far (although I do love
Eccelston and Smith); however, Russel T. Davies has never been the showrunner,
writer, or storyteller that Stephen Moffat is.

To date, S6 has probably been the best constructed (with “A Good Man Goes to
War” being one of my favourite episodes yet). S2 had my favourite season finale,
but some pretty awful episodes. S3 was horrible (I HATE MARTHA JONES), but had the
single best episode of the series (Blink, written by Stephen Moffat of course).
S4 had my favourite companion, but the worst season finale. The Tennant era was
marked by his brilliant acting, but wildly uneven storytelling. Russel T.
Davies and his trademark grandstanding, philosophizing, and moralizing have
moved on to a place more suited for that kind of a discussion (the more adult
    Torchwood).

    In
conclusion… I DON’T KNOW! I guess I’ll go with S2 for the excellent finale, but
I reserve the right to change my mind at the end of S6 lol.

I can't really decide but I absolutely adore Matt Smith and my vote goes to S5

  11. I do not understand why people like the Matt Smith/Moffatt seasons so much. The "believe you are human and you will be" (twice) idea is incrediably cheap writing even for Doctor Who. Davies only came close to doing this once with everyone thinking of the Doctor simultanously to cure him, but it at least had a bit more explanation involved. Then there was Moffatt's horrible cop out where somehow all Amy had to do was remember the Doctor to bring him back. Why? Because Moffatt says so and isn't clever enough to come up with something believable even in the very forgiving world of Doctor Who, apparenly. Sure, he tried to go for a stronger connecting storyline thoughout the episodes, but he did it badly. I got so damn tired of them zooming in on a crack somewhere in every episode of season 5, the Doctor would say something pointless like "that's bad," then move on. They rarely added any important details about the crack in those episodes, it was more like it was written for children who need to be constantly reminded of everything. Plus, we're still waiting for why the TARDIS blew up and what the hell happened between the first and second episodes of season 6.

  12. Really? The WWII one with fighter pilots in space, Dalek Skittles (to sell more merch), and the pathetic "believe you are human and you will not blow up" cheap ending. That was horrible.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1.  The resolution was terrible.  Agreed.
    2.  Space fighter pilots.  So What?  The main character flies through space and time in a blue box.  What's more ridiculous?
    3.  I've heard enough about colored Daleks.  The entire concept of Daleks is silly to begin with.  They're rolling garbage cans with plunger attachments.  Color coating them doesn't change that one way or another.

  14. 2. They weren't space ships. Even SciFi as ridiculous as Doctor Who has some limits to its believability and for me that limit is when they make things that entirely exist in our world do things that are impossible. Time Lords and TARDIS' don't exist, they can do whatever they want with them.
    3. It was obviously a cheap ploy to sell more toys. Collect all 5! They looked like children's toys because that's what they were designed to be. That in itself would not have made a crappy episode, but it was still lame.

believability and for me that limit is when they make things that
entirely exist in our world do things that are impossible."

You can blame RTD for that.  He set the precedent.  It was open season once the Doctor started sonic-ing cell phones so they could call through space and time.

    ReplyDelete
  16. True, but at least the cell phone thing didn't look visually ridiculous. It's just transfer of data through the air. Easier to swallow that the Doctor could tweek that than suddenly allowing WWII planes to fly where there is no air.

  17. for me season 6 so far or season 5 its a toss up :)

  18. my favorite was s2 because it had my favorite duo (david tennant as the doctor and rose as his companion)
my least favorite season was definitely s5 because its like they threw out everything, said they'd have one similar character (the doctor) and totally change everything else. It became amy's show. It also became so separated from the other seasons. personally, I love seeing old friends of the doctor come back for a few episodes (like captain jack, martha jones, rose tyler), but with the 5th and6th season, not one of those people has ever been mentioned. It was exactly what rose was afraid of in s2- never even being told about.
Also, I personally hate matt smith. the doctor is supposed to be a person who will do anything to avoid other's death, but matt smith seems fine with letting people die.
Oh, yes, and the. theme. song. is. TERRIBLE. The time vortex has clouds... wtf???? and the song itself is just annoying with the pipes. This doesn't exactly influence my decision but it's just evidence that in s5, the decided to throw out everything.
