I liked it! Seemed it like it was partially based on one of the books. Jane and Maura (and Angela) with a baby was so cute! And the blonde nurse lady killer was familiar. I think it was the girl in Godzilla with Matthew Broderick, but I'm not sure.
I thought this ep was probably one of the weakest. It just fell very flat for me. Most of it seemed like procedural regurge, how many crime shows can recycle the surrogate pregnancy drama already? And the character interactions were even devoid of feeling except for the 1 bright spot which I found to be Frankie and Frost...they were hilarious together, a definite gem I'd love to see more scenes between those two. I was left feeling like Maura's "maternal instinct" was very forced and imposed by the writing of the episode, it didn't seem in character per how she has been built from S1 to now.
The scientific inaccuracies from 2.01 to now may seem like nit picking but I have a serious beef with failings such as the parasympathetic nerve/nervous system/the misidentified Zimbardo experiment and last night's blood type snafu (a mother with type A can have a child with type O blood if the mother is AO). For one, you've created a character that is supposed to be a science/medical genius, please don't have her make errors that a 7th grader in beginning biology would know...it's very distracting.
All in all I'm starting to figure out my primary issue after these first two episodes: I am very unhappy with the character change in Maura. Yes Maura provided some comic relief in S1, but it was unique and fresh, now she's been turned into this almost cartooney sidekick who is there for the slapstick. I feel like Maura/SA's dramatic potential is being wasted.
It seems like many of the fans really likes the lighthearted play between Jane and Maura so far but when I look back on S1 the best J/M moments were the serious ones, think about their interaction after Maura interviews Hoyt, Jane coming to Maura to talk about fear, the whole processing of finding Maura's biological father/brother, and pretty much the entire finale. The episodes so far pale in comparison to that depth and they're turning Maura into a caricature that in no way plays on screen as a bona fide stand alone major character like she did last season and I find it a waste and very disappointing.
I agree with Anonymous' comments above. It seemed a bit corny. Maura's character definitely changed this season, for the worse. She's brighter than you are writing. Thought the first ep was awesome, looking forward to #3......
Not at all impressed with Season 2 so far. The Jane/Maura interaction is why I watch, since calling this an actual procedural crime drama is a stretch - but that's okay. Kind of interesting that for R&I Season 1 with new characters was stronger than what we've gotten so far in Season 2.
And I agree with Anonymous above - Maura needs to revert back to her smarts and for the love of everything, please keep Jane from crying over every damn issue each week. She's a seasoned homicide detective; emotion is one thing. Tears every week is a major turn off.
I thought the episode was awful, by far the worst the series has done to date. Everything about it, except for Frankie and Frost, fell flat.
First off, lets start with the science. It may seem like a nitpick to some, but that blunder with the blood type was awful. I understand that in TV land everything isn't 100% accurate, like, oh, I don't know, performing an emergency C-section on a dead woman with an Swiss army knife in a spa. I can forgive that. In the case of the blood type, it was such an egregious error because it was so easily fixed. All the writer had to do was change the mother's blood type to AB instead of A. Out of curiosity, even though I knew the answer, I googled it, and got a very clear and easy to understand answer in under 30 seconds. The fact that nobody took the time to catch and fix this error is insulting to the viewers, not to mention the characters, who are the initial creation of a medical doctor. If the show is going to have a character touted as a scientific genius, they need to take much better care in the writing and fact checking.
I am also not a fan of baby plots in general. I hope the show got this out of its system and we never visit it again. I gather Maura was supposed to have some maternal connection to the baby given the circumstances of his birth as well as her own situation as an adopted child, but it ended up just looking and feeling forced and out of place for the character (at least in this context). If there was more development of this in the script it must've been sacrificed so Lorraine Bracco could collect her paycheck this week.
The show also missed a golden opportunity to actually have a discussion about the burdens and expectations too often placed on women when it comes to having children. I can forgive a show run by men for not going there, but it's unfortunate that a show run by women didn't take the opportunity to at least discuss the fact that not every woman wants to have children, and that those who don't are often unfairly looked down upon. Throughout the episode, I almost felt like Jane really wanted to say that she doesn't want children, but in the end, the show just chickened out and that's a shame.
The one part of the episode that charmed me was Frankie and Frost. Their interaction was great, and I wouldn't mind seeing more of that. I don't find Angela Rizzoli's mid-life predicament interesting, because it feels like it's being shoehorned in at the expense of genuine character development because the show has to pay Lorraine Bracco.
The crime plot, as usual was bad. I didn't even care who the baby ended up with by the end. Don't even get me started on the deranged mommy-wanabe as the killer. Seriously? That was the best they could come up with?
I'm reserving judgment on the changes to Maura, but I have to admit I'm not liking what I'm seeing so far. Last season, Maura was all over the map, but Sasha Alexander really managed to give her a soul and make her genuine and interesting. I'm not getting that this season so far at all, and I can't tell if it's Sasha herself or the writing, or both. It's like Maura's there, but she's not all there, and everyone's interactions are just too breezy and insubstantial. The show is opting for cheap laughs at the expense of character development, and that's a shame. It was much more balanced in that respect last season.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteim mad at myself that i haven't been dedicated to this show as much as i should have been...but after tonight episode im hooked in!!!
ReplyDeleteThe actress was Ever Carradine. She also played Jesse -the-AC's mother on Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteOoh, thanks! I just remembered I know her from Eureka.
ReplyDeleteYep. She played Sheriff Carter's sister in a recurring role last season.

Meh. Except for Barry and Frankie bickering over the doll (action figure) it wasn't all that interesting to me.
