The Playboy Club - The PTC wants NBC not to air the show

27 Jul 2011

The almighty Parents Television Council and its 1.3 million members sent letters to every NBC affiliate to tell them they cannot program The Playboy Club.

Tim Winter, the PTC uptight president, told the stations the show was putting a "veneer of sophistication" on the pornography industry. "I am writing to urge you to preempt the program in your community". He also said individual members asking stations about the show had received what he called "canned responses" in support of "a sophisticated series about the transitional times of the early 1960s and the complex lives of a group of working-class women". Tim Winter also warned stations that if they did air the show, the Parents Television Council would be watching and would urge members to file complaints with the FCC if anything was indecent.

One NBC affiliate, KSL Salt Lake City, has announced that it would preempt the show, a point Winter made in his pitch to other stations to follow suit. KSL, which is owned by Deseret Media Companies (which, in turn, is owned by the Mormon Church), said last month that the Playboy brand did not fit with the station's brand.

  1. Or these self-righteous people could do their job and put their kids to bed at 10pm.

I'm glad this council can't touch cable channels like FX or AMC (I don't think so anyway), otherwise it would have been a long time since creativity would have gone down the toilets. For once, a big network dares to have an unusual setting for one of its new dramas and the PTC tells them what to do even though they haven't seen any episode yet. These people would be more reassured to have their kids watching psychopaths murdering innocent people, I guess.

  2. Pathetic... there's a reason why there's more people not in this council, there are less douchebags that can't separate TV and real-life than there are that can.

Some people just need to get a life...

  3. TVBTN tweeted an interesting article on this matter yesterday: http://www.todaystmj4.com/blogs/stevewexler/125804218.html

  4. Oh, STFU PTC. Don't let your kids watch the show. How freaking hard is that?

  5. Even though I am not planning on watching this show, I think they should air it.
I mean, come on, how bad can it get? Yes, the show is called Playboy Club. But I doubt there'll be more alarming shows in there than in e.g. True Blood. Why not complain about those scenes? Seriously, I've read all of the books and I do know that they get quite graphic in there as well, but I think they could have cut on some of the scenes. The show sometimes seems rather like soft-porn than an actual TV show. They cut have at least shortened some of the scenes. Yet, it still gets shown and people say it's an awesome show and it gets so many nominations. And from what I've heard, Game of Thrones is not shy of scenes like this as well.

And about the pornography issue ... isn't it that most girls who get into this business at first think it's such an amazing thing? Maybe this show will do just the opposite of what they think: show some other perspectives as well.

And I agree with Bunky Bunk . If you have young children that shouldn't watch this, send them to bed when they actually should be in bed. Also, if your children are old enough to have their own opinion about this, let them watch this show if they want to. These things do exist. No one can protect their children till they're 50, even though some parents would love to. And I'm sure this show won't have written "go join the pornography business!" between the lines ... so. Yah.

  6. It's on at ten so if young children are watching then the parents aren't doing their jobs right

People will complain about anything though

  8. The PTC is a joke.  They have NO credibility.

This self-proclaimed television council has, in the past, railed against:

    Youtube
    video games
    GQ magazine
    Howard Stern guest-judging American Idol
the program title "S#*! My Dad Says" (they complained about the symbols)
    Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction"
    WWE professional wrestling
all in-flight movies rated higher than PG  and, last but not least...
    Spongebob Squarepants

They're idiots.  I'm all for parents policing what their kids watch but no one with any sense should ever pay attention to this ridiculously stupid organization.

  9. Wait.  They said PG movies on flights were OK?  Wow, they've loosened up over the years.  :-D

  10. Wouldn't surprise me if they took credit for $#*! My Dad Says being cancelled.  It couldn't possibly have had anything to do with the show being crap, right PTC?  It was all you.  [/sarcasm]

  11. That just makes folks wanna tune in more.....

  12. "if they did air the show, the Parents Television Council would be watching" Well there is an easy 1.3 million viewers there, why wouldn't NBC air the show? xD Here's hoping every one of them has a ratings box (or the American equivalent, I'm in Australia so I'm not sure what that is.)
