Men of a Certain Age - Cancelled

15 Jul 2011

TNT have cancelled Men of a Certain Age.

TNT has been proud to be a part of Men of a Certain Age for two seasons. While the show has featured great storytelling and impeccable performances, the audience simply hasn’t built to the point where we can continue the series. This was an extremely difficult decision for us. We wish Ray Romano, Mike Royce and the terrific cast and crew of Men of a Certain Age the very best and look forward to exploring new programming possibilities in the future.

  1. Haha, right after Andre Braugher got an Emmy-nom for the second year he`s on the show.

  2. Damn it. That cancellation pisses me off and yet, it was predictible.

It already was a miracle than Men of a Certain Age got renewed for a second season in the first place, probably only because of the critics.

TNT never really believed in MoaCA though : all 10 episodes of the first season aired in December 2009, January and February 2010 while all the other shows were on break. I mean, episodes 1.03 and 1.04 aired on December 21nd and December 28th, no one does that except for cancelled shows !

It wasn't helpful for the show at all, and those who didn't think about watching it during the break couldn't really get back into it a few weeks later because unlike most of TNT dramas, MoaCA not a procedural cop show.

The first 6 episodes of season 2 weren't luckier : from December 6th to January 10th, while everyone else is on break. And the last 6 episodes had a tricky schedule too : they all aired after the end of the 2010/2011 season but before the actual kick-off of the summer season on all the other channels.

And with a show like that, having such a schedule is a very bad thing, and thus the ratings were bad :

    Episode 2.07 (June 1st) : 1.85 million viewers (0.5% of the 18-49 demo) - Summer Premiere.

    Episode 2.08 (June 8th) : 1.35 million viewers (0.4% of the 18-49 demo).

    Episode 2.09 (June 15th) : 1.44 million viewers (0.4% of the 18-49 demo).

    Episode 2.10 (June 22nd) : 1.60 million viewers (0.4% of the 18-49 demo).

    Episode 2.11 (June 29nd) : 1.50 million viewers (0.3% of the 18-49 demo).

    Episode 2.12 (July 6th) : 1.79 million viewers (0.4% of the 18-49 demo) - Season/Series Finale.

The series features 3 middle-aged guy going through the midlife crisis, they're all around 50. So technically, the target audience is more likely to be closer to 49 than 18, hence the very poor ratings on the 18-49 demo.

It's not going to change my plans to catch up on this show this summer (I watched the first 5 episodes around Christmas 2009 and I liked it a lot but I stopped watching for a few weeks, I had a lot on my plate at that time and I never got back into it). But it surely makes me sad to know that perhaps there's no actual ending, even if I want to believe the writers were smart enough to have seen the cancellation coming and have written an appropriate ending to episode 2.12 that could work as a Series Finale.

Sad but I totally called it about 3 months ago.

  5. That sucks.  But TNT/TBS is notorious for treating shows like crap that think outside the box a little.

  6. Really?  Do you have some examples of this?  I've heard no such thing.

  7. Bah. Worst news ever. What a wonderful show. I mean, it was obvious it was going to happen, but I was hoping that TNT would go for it being the most critically acclaimed/best show it has. Clearly they were waiting on emmy noms... and with only one for Andre Braugher, it was cancellation time.

  8. Hurts... My hopes it would be renewed were little, but it still makes me sad.

  9. Huh, I'm surprised it got cancelled. I always heard it was doing ok. Critics seemed to like it.

  10. Is it the show that failed or the network...   Scheduling is everything....   Hide the show in bad days & slots...  the best show is doomed to failure.
